IMAX Version of Marvel’s Black Panther Gets A Whole Lot Bigger With Different Aspect Ratio

There are plenty of reasons to go see a movie in IMAX, and Black Panther may be one you want to check out. The upcoming Marvel film will look even bigger on the big screen as the aspect ratio will change for certain scenes.

During a Twitter Q&A, the cast for Black Panther, which included Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and others, discussed their roles in the upcoming film. The film’s director and writer Ryan Coogler discussed how IMAX plays a role into the film and persuaded viewers to make sure they see it in that format when it comes to theaters in the United States on February 16, as Black Panther was released in many parts of the world earlier this week.

“I love the format,” explained Coogler. “For me, it’s the best way to see a movie. To hear it, to see it, to sit right in it. For us to be able to make this film, we got almost an hour of additional footage where we open up and use the full IMAX screen. It works for the story. We use it when we go into Wakanda, when we go into these spaces that are important to our characters. “

This isn’t additional footage for the film. Certain scenes were shot in a larger aspect ration, specifically for IMAX. This could also mean that those same shots will be cropped in order to fit into standard theaters. This is part of a continuing deal Disney has with IMAX through 2019, as The Last Jedi shot some of its key scenes specifically to fit on the IMAX screen. We will also see Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War, and its untitled sequel as part of this deal.

GameSpot gave the film a glowing review as Michael Rougeau said, “Black Panther is a top tier Marvel movie with all the humor, style, action, passion, and fun that the MCU has come to embody. Black Panther is a cultural event that’s going to be hard for Marvel to top, no matter how many worlds Thanos conquers later this year in Infinity War.”
