How Assassin's Creed Odyssey On Google's Project Stream Works

Game streaming takes a titanic leap forward.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the inaugural test-bed for Google's ambitious streaming platform, Project Stream. Now that the service has launched, we're seeing more details of just how the test is working--at least this time around.

According to an email sent to participants, Google will allow testers to play Odyssey for free until January 15, 2019. After that point, you'll lose your access and won't be able to continue your saved game. Streaming takes place right through the Chrome browser, and you can swap between computers by signing in with your Google account.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Sales And Microtransactions Break Records - GS News Update

To speed you on your way, each account is being credited with $10 worth of in-game currency to purchase some of the game's microtransactions. After that, though, you won't be able to purchase more credits on your own, so you'll need to make them count. You'll need an Ubisoft account, and you can play with a USB controller or mouse and keyboard.

Google's announcement came just before a similar one from Microsoft, detailing its new xCloud streaming plans. Google beat it to the testing phase, since Microsoft doesn't plan to start rolling out its public tests until 2019. But Microsoft's service does have one advantage that we know of so far. Google's participant email specifies that you can't play on a smart device, while Microsoft's announcement made a point of mentioning you can.

I was chosen to use this service and i must admit they did it, barely noticeable lag with desent 1080p graphics that some times pixelate but i would call this a win for project stream. Id say the best in the business people will be surprised.

Welp, I was accepted to this yesterday after signing up for grins, and to see just how bad it would be. And what did I get? Not a horrible experience, honestly. There was a bandwidth test that is performed before you can use the service to make sure you aren't trying to run this on a 5mb service or something. Having a 100mb connection, I passed, obviously, so I just needed to log into my Ubisoft account and away I went.

Yes there are issues with latency, half a second if I had to take a guess. Which I was fully expecting. That just translated to me not being able to dodge or parry some attacks with the same level of "last second" timing that I usually do, but it wasn't anything game breaking. Just took a few tries to get used to it.

The quality of the graphics though was something much more noticeable and something I couldn't get past. There was a "blur/fuzz" on the screen probably 70%-80% of the time, something one would see on a Twitch stream. Its hard to explain in words, but for anyone that's watched a Twitch broadcast or seen VODs knows what I'm talking about i'm sure. That super grainy look as if the game is suddenly running at 480p or something. It doesn't happen ALL the time, but enough to bug me when I know what the game is supposed to look like since I play it on my computer normally. And it can even occur when you're standing still, so it isn't a "objects in motion" issue.

Now, are these issues big enough to make this service completely pointless? No, not in my opinion. For lack of another means to play games such as this, it's a pretty decent means to do so. Or if you really want to play on the go, if you have a Chrome capable computer, you're able to log in and play (so long as your internet isn't garbage that is). I was pleasantly surprised at how not shit it was and am now looking forward to where it goes from here.

@R34Vegeta: I'm on a gig fiber line, and I was pretty disappointed by the resolution. I'm not sure it's ever even 1080. I played it on a 2k monitor and compared running on the streaming service and my hardware and the resolution is what really stands out. I definitely prefer to play on my own hardware for now, but the experience (about an hour) was smooth. Maybe there will be an option in the near future to adjust the stream quality if you have the bandwidth.

@R34Vegeta: I agree with you. I went in with low expectations and was surprised to see it wasn't horrible. I'm still having issues with the parrying. Not really due to the lag, but due to the buttons you need to press. I'm probably going to change my configuration some.

Methinks they should've gone with Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2.
