MCU Star Asks Sony To Return Spider-Man To Marvel, Following Dispute

Spider-man rocks!

The news that Spider-Man might be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe has, unsurprisingly, caused much dismay and disappointment amongst superhero movie fans. Marvel Studios parent company Disney and Spidey rights-holders Sony are in dispute over the financing of future movies featuring the web-slinger. While most actors involved within the MCU have remained quiet on the issue, there's one MCU star who has expressed his opinion--Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner.

Renner posted the same image on both Twitter and Instagram, stating, "Hey Sony Pictures, we want Spider-Man back to Stan Lee and Marvel please, thank you." The issue isn't quite as simple as that--Sony has owned the movie rights to Spider-Man since Marvel sold them in 1999, and this dispute is over each studio's financial stake and whether MCU producer Kevin Feige will continue to be involved with Spidey films. Nevertheless, Renner's post has struck a chord with fans, with over 1.5 million likes on Instagram, and more than 40,000 retweets. Check it out below, and see if you can make sense of the bizarre hashtags that Renner has included:

Now Playing: Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige No Longer Producing Spider-Man Movies - GSU News Update

Shortly after the story of the dispute broke, Sony responded with a statement. The studio claimed that many of the reports have "mischaracterized" discussions between the studios, and expressed "disappointment" that Feige would no longer be involved, laying the decision at Disney's feet.

Of course, the big question remains about the future of the character in the MCU. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the official end of the MCU's Phase 3, setting the stage for what's to come from the universe of films. With Feige no longer being involved, it's possible that the Spider-Man franchise could instead exist outside of the MCU.

Sony has already been building a non-MCU Spider-Man universe thanks to the film adaptation of Venom, as well as the upcoming Morbius movie, in which Jared Leto stars as the titular living vampire. Sources told Deadline that there were already two more planned Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland as the web-slinger, with director Jon Watts expected to return. For now, an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on August 29.

Why don't you front the cash to make the deal fair for Sony instead of just talking nonsense?

Wrooooong, it's Disney's fault for wanting 50% of the profits of something it sold away decades ago.

Lol. Jeremy Renner is not a big enough star to be slamming any studio.

@sippio: Both are awful in my mind. Disney for their habit of locking stuff away (Disney vault) and Sony for going back on their word about things that would be beneficial for gamers (online multiplayer would always be free; PlayStation backwards compatibility). To me, it's like watching Beavis and Butt-head fight.

Sony bought the rights to Spider-Man fair and square. Why does Disney think that they can just demand a change from 5% to 50% share for nothing? If they want the rights back, then buy the rights back. It's simple as that. Renner is an idiot.

@thomaswmak: on one hand, Sony tanked the Spider-Man movies they've been doing. The Marvel Spider-Man movies likely boosted Venom's performance in theaters, and 5% is rather small for Disney doing all the work.

On the other, 5 to 50 is a huge swing, and chances of getting that were slim.

I almost wonder if Disney is trying to push Spider-Man back to Sony so they can prove that Sony can't handle the property.

As for Stan Lee's daughter... who cares?

@EvilTyger: It does not matter whether Spidey tanked before MCU or not. The point is Sony has no legal obligation to give free money to Disney.

@thomaswmak: But by the reverse, Marvel has no obligation to make Spider-Man (and related) movies nearly for free. I can't help but wonder how long it will be before Sony resurrects the 'Aunt May' movie now to scramble to keep Spider-Man profitable in the wake of the mismanagement of the property.

@thomaswmak: Unfortunately, the rights are likely extremely expensive. We're talking billions of dollars per movie, here. If it were me, I'd ask for $5 billion minimum for the rights. That's not exactly chump change.

@Barighm: So Disney sold the rights while "the stock" was cheap and now wants it back when it's high? tough luck.

I totally understand it would be an astronomical number to buy the rights. But so is a 45% increase in revenue sharing that they are demanding now. I DO wish things are canonical in the MCU but Sony will do fine with Spider-Man in it's own world.

@thomaswmak: It's quite funny that the reason the stock for spiderman is high is because of what Disney / Marvel did with the reboot.

Shot themselves in the foot a bit there.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: i disagree, but everyone has a different perspective.

It’s just that to me Sony already had a successful run with Spidey. I mean, in a way, they were the ones who started the efective superhero moviemaking era with the original trilogy (especially 1 & 2). Before that it was basically George Clooney wearing spandex-velcro for Batman and we all know how harsh the Schumacher touch was.

@Barighm: Not all of Sony’s movies movies sucked. In fact, Sony is responsible for the 2 best Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man 2 and Into the Spiderverse.

Yes, Renner, I am sure Sony will agree to share 50% of Spidy earnings with the most powerful media company in the world just because you ask.

Not to mention that Disney is already get all the income from merchendise.
