The Next Nintendo Switch Mario Game Is Getting A Free Beta, Here's When

One of the big Switch exclusives coming this year, Mario Tennis Aces, is getting a beta in June, Nintendo has announced. The sports game's Pre-Launch Online Tournament will run from June 1-3, although the exact start and end times will vary by region. You can find the full announced schedule below.

Four characters are playable at the start of the demo: Mario, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser. If you gain enough performance-related points, you can unlock a further five characters, though it's not clear who these are. Matches are playable online against other people around the world or in single-player against AI-controlled opponents, but in this trial you'll need to be connected to the internet at all times no matter which mode you play. Nintendo also states that "all participants" will be able to unlock a free additional costume--Mario's traditional dungarees--for use in the full game, though it's not currently known whether you must achieve some feat to unlock this or if it's awarded to you just by taking part.

Mario Tennis Aces was first revealed during the surprise Nintendo Direct Mini presentation that aired back in January. The game is developed by Camelot, the studio behind the Golden Sun series and numerous other Mario Sports titles.

Pretty pumped about this game. Really looking forward to a new Mario sports game with a story mode.

The switch has became my favorite gaming platform this year.

I'm looking forward to the Adventure Mode. After sampling so many Mario sport-type titles through Gamefly on the 3DS, I've seen they rehash the Golf and Tennis pretty excessively. This actually looks refreshing. If it were just bouncing the ball back and forth on generic courts, I wasn't going to be too thrilled. This looks like it might be ok.

Why do Switch games rarely go on sale? That's what I want to know.

@ticklemepink: That sucks, I can understand first-party games not going on sale, but even third-party games rarely go on sale or drop in price.

I hate these "timed" beta/demos.
There's so little time for me to play games nowadays, I can't allow myself to "schedule" it.

Why don't they do like they used to, have demos a couple of weeks/months before the final release and have it available for a couple of weeks, not just hours!
I remember the splatoon2 demo/Beta which I cared to pre-download just to forget about it and not being able to try.
I think same happened with Arms...

Making the "demo/beta" like "Events" is lame.

I'd understand for games that are multiplayer ONLY like battle-royale games but for games as "casual" as Mario-Tennis, this is plain stupid...

@silv3rst0rm: It's because the beta is to test out their online system. It's a stress test. The best way to ensure that they get the stress they need is to have all people play online at a specific time.

Just look at Call of Duty/Battlefield. They have online betas that span a week, but they never seem to get the stress tests they need, and their servers almost always crash when the games launch.

@Elranzer: That was my first thought too. The picture in my notifications was too small for context. Let’s dispense with the notion that GameSpot doesn’t know what they're doing. GameSpot knows what it’s doing.

@Elranzer: I mean....there is a picture of Mario playing tennis with his -yeah that's right, i just caught you buffing your banana- signature look right next to the title. Plus it is the next Mario game, what more do you want. I think we should all reserve our clickbait judgment for Eddie.

@blood-souls: Picture was too small to see in my bell notifications. You won't likely see the picture in web search results. Otherwise yes you do see it from their main page news feeds. GameSpot knows exactly what they're doing...hate the game not the player I suppose.
