2019 Was Actually A Dope Year For Video Games

Despite popular sentiment, 2019 delivered fantastic games from a slew of genres, pitting third-person action against thoughtful sci-fi exploration. As we close out the year with our Best of the Year awards, we're taking the chance to reflect on a jam-packed 2019.

2019 wasn't GREAT, but it was ok. 2018 was much better due to God of War and Red Dead, which are 2 of the best ever. In 2019, the Outer Worlds and Metro Exodus were my two favorite, and while very good games, you can't compete against GoW and RDR2.

RE2 is a rehash and I wish they would spend their time and money making good new games so I wrote that off, Sekiro didnt appeal to me but might be solid, and Fallen Order was mediocre. Not bad, but not great. Death Stranding is a walking simulator with over the top, boring/silly story line. Something tells me we aren't going to be having a new genre revolution of "stranding" games. Calm down Hideo....

@nofreikinleoms: Somebody complains about every year being a bad year for video games.

"Despite popular sentiment"? This is the first I've heard of such a "popular" sentiment. We got Death Stranding and RE2 remake. And Outer Worlds. Amazing year for gaming.

2019 is actually a pretty good year for gaming as long as you take off those fanboy goggles that only treat exclusives on your beloved plastic box as the games that matter, as well as not taking an AAA-purist approach to gaming - and there are plenty of good AAA games too, just that their MC scores don't do them enough justice.

I'm enjoying Borderlands 3 and Outer Worlds more than any 2018 games but those are just my personal favorites, overall I think 2018 was probably a little better than 2019 considering games like Red Dead 2.

It was okay but I, like many others here it seems, don't agree. Sure, there were some good games but I can't see me reminiscing on much in a few years time. Death Stranding had it's moments as did Jedi Fallen Order and A Plague Tale among others but, all in all, it was an average year with no standout game for me.

I don't agree honestly. I have found myself going back to games from the previous decade and older because I wasn't enjoying a lot of what was released this year. Also a fair few games this year had agendas injected into them which spoiled them for me.

@mrbojangles25: I agree with you. Nostalgia is a bitch for developers. Well, except for the remake business. When I go back to play older titles, even after getting past the blurrier, blockier visuals, gameplay is usually slower and clunkier and less fun than what I remember. What a tough business. That said, it all comes down to personal preference and someone who prefers the years of gaming past is more than welcome to. Trash talking them however is toxic and bad for the industry as a whole because that voice can influence newcomers and simply turn them away from what is essentially a good game someone doesn’t like.

If only. It’s been a pretty lean gaming year. But at least I got a chance to catch up on my backlog, and I finally bought a PSVR to fill the lonely gaming months until the Animal Crossing and Last of Us 2 come out.
