COD: Modern Warfare Feels Different Enough To Be Fresh - Final Beta Impressions

How the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta holds up for fans of Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and older Call Of Duty games.

The long-running FPS series Call of Duty returns to contemporary military themes with a reboot of Modern Warfare. But don't get it wrong, it's a new take separate from the 2007 game that propelled the franchise, and shooters as a whole, into a new era. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going back to basics, but a new game comes with the expectations of still feeling new and different, even if it is a reboot of sorts. With the beta wrapped up, we gathered our thoughts about our experience and came away generally impressed, and for various reasons.

In the video above, Aaron, Ryan, and Michael talk about the aspects of the new Modern Warfare that they enjoyed and how those elements relate to the things they liked from previous Call of Duty games. They discuss Ground War, a large-scale mode that pitted two teams of 32 players against each other in the beta, and the polar opposite mode Gunfight, the fast-paced 2v2 mode that challenges you with random loadouts. Other modes discussed include Cyber Attack which puts a spin on the traditional Demolition mode by letting you revive teammates and shift the dynamic of matches. And both Realism and NVG matches force you to play just a bit differently by virtue of their rulesets.

Whether it's the small changes to movement and weapon feedback or how you're able to adapt your loadouts in effective ways depending on mode or map, Call of Duty focuses on strengthening its basics. And in our experience, all these small changes to the foundation make its several modes a joy to play.

We'll see how the full game shakes out when it launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25. In the meantime, you can check out all our coverage so far, including a deeper dive into the Ground War mode, the latest single-player campaign trailer, or a roundup of everything you need to know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Excellent analysis of the game. I'm proud of you Gamespot. Despite the heated toxic reaction to this game over its Survival mode exclusivity and loot boxes, you have been brave enough to upload a precise analysis of the game without the bias that's going on around. This game doesn't even have season pass and it's going to deliver maps freely to everyone. Even if they put guns in the loot boxes, I'd still happily play it, knowing that there's no season pass. You don't see people complaining about Bungie that's charging people 60 dollars for four season passes, literally season pass for season pass but they got time to blame Call of Duty for having no season pass. People are biased and we don't care. All my friends and I are pre ordering and we're gonna enjoy the **** out of it, and we will probably spend money on microtransactions too! Sue me, biased jerks.

What a sellout. Right on the heals of a bunch of damning premature reveals, like loot boxes, PS4 exclusivity... Gamespot has gone full IGN with a mush piece to promote and sell this game for Activision. You're useless to everyone when you sell out.

Modern Warfare hasn't been "fresh" in almost a decade.
