Doom Vs. Wolfenstein - Which Is Better? | Versus

Bethesda brought back Doom and Wolfenstein from the dead, and now it's time to see which is better. Fighting for Wolfenstein is Kallie Plagge, and defending Doom is Jean-Luc Seipke. Watch and decide who you think argued their case better in our poll!

Wolfenstein and Doom are two of Bethesda's most beloved properties, and both have been successfully revived in recent years, following their 1990s heydays. Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and 2016's Doom reboot have all breathed new life (and gruesome, gruesome death) into the two franchises, and now we have another entry coming in the form of Doom Eternal, which was announced at E3 2018. That, along with Wolfenstein II's imminent Switch launch and upcoming standalone expansion, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, got us thinking: which franchise is better?

We decided to sit down and have a lighthearted but passionate debate about which first-person shooter series we prefer. Fighting for Wolfenstein and its over-the-top Nazi-killing antics is resistance faithful Kallie Plagge. On Doom's demon-slaying side, meanwhile, is would-be John Romero romancer Jean-Luc Seipke.

Watch the video above to see how the debate turned out. The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective picks. Alongside the serious analysis from each side, there's also some friendly fun-making and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quickfire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we put another two Bethesda games up against each other: Fallout 3 vs Fallout: New Vegas. In that episode, Dave Jewitt's New Vegas argument got a critical hit on Mike Mahardy and Fallout 3, taking 84% of the votes. Make sure to get your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

They are both amazing however the winner for me would be DOOM. I can perfectly understand some people found it a bit bland, But thats exactly what I loved about it. No big deal story no cutscenes just action and gameplay from the beginning untill the very end. I just restarted playing the campaign once again I never really get tired of it. I also found that in DOOM you get into a certain free running flow once you get into it. I absolutely loved the classic gameplay reminded me of half life sometimes. However I sure am thankfull and excited that the game has been a succes and a sequel is on the way.

Wolfenstein is the far better property. The modern version has 3 great entries, with fantastic stories and characters, and memorable environments. Doom was one of the most bland games I've played in years. The Mars sections were just a blur of reds, browns, and broken pieces of metal and the boring ID version of hell was still like album cover art from some crummy hair metal band in the 80's with not a single scary thing about it. I can't picture a single level of Doom in my head, yet I can remember almost every moment of the new Wolfenstein games. Doom is just generic space marine shooter number 342,901.

I don’t know if its because I got the Switch version or what but Doom is easily my biggest regrettable game purchase in the past decade and I could only play it twice. As repetitive as a FPS can be, lousy multiplayer, looked and played terrible. But again I think the Switch port might’ve been a failure. Haven’t tried Wolfenstein yet except the original so can’t comment on that.

@tingtong The "original" Wolfenstein from like 1981, or the first of the Bethesda published ones? If you played Wolfenstein, The New Order, you can certainly compare that to Doom, that's the point of the article.:

@jski: No, that would be Castle Wolfenstein, which was more of a 2D platformer. I wasn’t born yet. I’m talking about Wolfenstein 3d, which was ’92. If I was comparing that with the first Doom ever made then it would be Doom hands down, as well as Doom II. But just having looked at the new Wolfenstein & already played Doom I would give it to Wolfenstein.. no way it can be any worst.

"Fighting for doom is jean luc-seipke. Who claims to have beaten the game on its hardest difficulty with the hud turned off and that he's had sex with the soundtrack. Only one of those things is true, but we'll let you figure that one out yourself."..........10/10 for the introduction. Both games rock.

Doom is the better game, back in the day and now, Old wolfenstein was very basic, Doom was the real deal, today's Wolfenstein its pretty good, but the story gets in the way of the action way to often, the pace of the game suffers from that, still love of tho.

Even though Wolfenstein is older than Doom I would say Doom has the edge but Wolfenstein is not far behind. I really enjoy them both and would play them any day except for Doom MP which I find Meh.

@Terminator95: I agree even in the beginning days Doom was violent and some experiences in Doom had me jumping in my seat especially the two handed rocket launcher Demon which took an long time to kill.

There's no contest. DOOM wins hands down. I'll even say that the new DOOM is the best first-person-shooter of all time. Wolfenstein is just another boring shooter. Only slightly better than Call of Duty.

@ronaldmcreaganAmazing how people think differently about things. I thought the new Doom was the most boring and generic shooter I've played in years. I don't remember a single level from that game and I'm old enough to remember full levels from the original.:

@jski: Yes, it is amazing. What difficulty did you play the game on? I've heard people say that the game is boring on medium difficulty. If the medium setting makes the game too easy, I can see why it would be a very forgettable experience for you; because story wise, there's really nothing there. But the actual gameplay is where Doom really shines.

@gr4h4m833zy: I only play single player Call of Duty, and I've found all of them extremely boring. Seems a lot of people enjoy Call of Duty multiplayer. I'm assuming that's why you like Call of Duty better than Wolfenstein.

@ronaldmcreagan: nah. I just like the set pieces and bombastic moments in the campaign. Most are brilliant, to me anyway. I mainly lay games for story or fun. What call of duties do you prefer over wolfenstein 2?

Doom was a bore when I first went through it. I found it very hard to want to complete it so it took me a while as I played it off and on after its release. It wasn't until last year where I went back and played it on nightmare where I found out the game is darn near perfect in most respects in my opinion. The biggest issues I had was that there are a few no points of return (although you can always replay stages), and I wish there were more bosses and a little more variety in the stages. It was all small issues though.

On the other hand, I really, really like The New Colossus; I liked it more than The New Order and The Old Blood. The story had more strong moments and the environments I appreciated a little more. The game wasn't that hard on its hardest because of the save system, but it was fun nonetheless. I didn't care for the side missions that had you searching for star cards; it'd delve into repetition if you wanted to take that route. In the end, it wasn't even necessary though as I found out on my second playthrough. I think overall, I'd say Doom is better, but not by a lot and it's hard to say because The New Colossus is a great game to me.

Though I'm into what story Doom had, albeit being kind of goofy, Wolfenstein has the more interesting one. It's just that when you take into account the entire package and how cohesive it is, Doom does it better. I am also of the opinion that The New Colossus has some of the best shooting in recent memory, and don't have an issue with its difficulty that some found. When it comes to Doom, I don't think the actual shooting, mainly due to the enemy reaction, is all that satisfying, which is why I originally thought it was boring. It's the way you more or less strategically, dance around the level trying to defeat your enemy with what you have before they can kill you on the harder difficulties that is so satisfying.

Edit - The Level design I think is mixed. If you're comparing variety, Wolfenstein wins, but if you're taking into account the ways you get around a stage and exploring, I think Doom wins. Something I love about Doom is that once you clear out an entire level of enemies, you can go back through it and explore, finding all the collectibles. Plus, going back to the whole dancing during battle thing, the levels accommodate the action perfectly. There's never any obstacles for you when you need to move around the stage to defeat an enemy.

The courtroom scene in Wolfenstein was probably the most brutal part of the game on I am death incarnate, but that's also where I found out I could save whenever I wanted, so it was just about chipping away at guys and saving it. There's also a decent hiding place that you can book it to, to take guys out. On hard, that level isn't very well represented though for what the story is trying to get across. The whole point of it to me was that B.J. got out and is killing dozens of Nazi's with ease. Playing that on easy made a lot more sense since you're just dispatching them without issue, as I assume B.J. wanted to do and then reality hits.

@Terminator95: I might edit it further and add more. Just wait... Just kidding. That said, read it or don't. I was giving an opinion, one that couldn't be contained in a few words. The whole point is to discuss the topic, rather than 'Dis game good, dat one bad!'

I love both games. id Software and Machine Games are doing a mega job.

Am I the only one who loved The New Colossus, but think that New Order was better?

@Subaru1980 I thought The New Colossus highs were better than New Order, but that the lows were much lower, if that makes sense. the New Order felt more consistently good throughout, while New Colossus was all over the place, especially those last few boring rehashed levels. It's almost like the brilliant first half of the game, like the Roswell levels, was made by a completely different studio than the last half. I'm hoping the next one is a little less linear as well, but I prefered all the recent Wolfenstein games to the generic Doom release. I feel like I'm the only person on Earth that didn't like the new Doom.:

Doom is more balanced, has better visuals, and features more consistent mechanics.

The New Order is a great game, but The New Colossus is inferior.

@bannermanner I have to disagree on the visuals. It was all a blur or red, browns, and broken metal to me on the Mars levels and the hell levels were like boring cover art from some hair metal band album from the 80's. There's was nothing scary or intimidating about it. It just lacked the character of the Wolfenstein games.:

Both games were great. But I give the edge to Doom. Wolfenstein largely reused areas, and while Mick did a good job there with the music, his work on Doom was on a whole other level.

The gunplay, and melee was great in both, but again better in Doom.

I really enjoy killing the Nazis, but I have to say killing the "demon horde" was more preferred. (aside from a few specific villains you finally get your hands on in Wolfenstein that is quite satisfying.)

I am looking forward to Doom Eternal. I hope Mick cranks it up even further. Bigger boss battles too!

Wolfenstein all the way. I have the new Doom and the new Wolfensteins. So much more to do in the Wolfenstein games and the different characters give it so much life. Doom is pretty much just a straight shooter. Nothing wrong with that, but I like the new Wolfenstein universe much better.

Now this is a good VS.

You have 2 granddaddy’s of the FPS genre.

While Doom is really the true big name game that put FPS’s on the map Wolfenstein was the first FPS that really started the genre and helped pave the way for games like Doom.

As much as I appreciate Wolfenstein for really starting the genre (as well as some of the incredible recent installments.) I think people will remember Doom at the end of the day when it comes to the question of what is the most influential FPS. Whether it was due to it really raising the bar with it’s fast paced gameplay or it’s undeniable brutal and often gruesome depictions of destruction Doom set itself a-part from any other title in the genre for many years after its release.

With that being said I realize the question posed is in regards to some of the more recent entries in both franchises. That becomes much harder to get a clear cut answer.

While I loved my time with the new Doom Wolfenstein really blew me away with it’s emphasis on story and characterization; 2 things that Doom had neither of. I know most will say that’s not what Doom is about and that’s a fair point to make but there was just something gratifying and purposeful about playing Wolfenstein (more accurately the first Machine Games installment.). That’s not taking anything away from Doom as it was just sheer fun and pandemonium rushing my way through the halls of Hell but when I finished the campaign I was a little disappointed with how it suddenly ended out of nowhere.

Even with these shortcomings Doom was a blast and I can’t wait for the next installment but in regards to recent titles I think Wolfenstein may just slightly edge out the win.
