Fallout: New Vegas 2 Rumors Explained | GameSpot

New rumors about Fallout: New Vegas 2, and PlayStation files patent for a potential DualSense 2 controller.

Yesterday there was word of a new PlayStation handheld, today it’s talk about a Fallout: New Vegas 2, both rumors that won’t ever go away until they become true. Here’s what you need to know.

A new branch titled "newvegas2" was added to Fallout 4's backend, and was made visible to players after an update on April 4. Think of software and game development like a tree. The trunk is the game itself, and developers can create branches from that trunk to work off of without tampering with the actual project, or stepping on the work of another developer.

Since this “newvegas2” branch is connected to the trunk of Fallout 4, the speculation is that the game’s next gen update, that was announced last fall with an intended launch sometime this year, will feature new content around New Vegas. Specifically, content featured in Creators Club third party mods initially developed by fans.

While the branch has since been either deleted or properly hidden from users, that hasn’t stopped people online from speculating about a New Vegas sequel. Considering that Microsoft now owns the IP holder of Fallout, Bethesda, and the developers of the original New Vegas, Obsidian, the company has literally all the pieces to make a New Vegas 2. There’s even interest from involved parties to do so, with head of Obsidian Feargus Urquhart telling Gamepressure in January, "Of course, if we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we'd make it."

Unfortunately for New Vegas fans, Urquhart confirmed in the same interview that Obsidian does not currently have a Fallout game in development, lending further credence to the theory that the mysterious "newvegas2" branch is strictly related to an upcoming Fallout 4 update, and likely unrelated to a remake or sequel of Obsidian's 2010 RPG.

Going back to yesterday’s PlayStation handheld rumors, which made mention the device would include controls akin to a DualSense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, it seems the company might take things to a completely other level with a potential DualSense 2, with a new patent application that suggests Sony is looking to implement temperature feedback into its controllers.

The company has filed a patent application for a material that can simulate temperature feedback to its controllers in order to reflect what is going on during gameplay. The controller would feature a malleable membrane for its exterior rather than the hard plastic of traditional controllers.

Not only could this membrane change shape based on what was occurring in the game, but an electrical current could pass through it in order for the user to feel a simulated change in temperature. This material would also allow for better, more precise haptic feedback than the current material of the DualSense.

While this all sounds cool in practice, what I’d rather simply have Sony invent is a DualSense controller with decent battery life.

I hope this is true as we need some more Fallout Vegas for sure and that would be a nice addition to the next-gen upgrades.

It would seem strange for Fallout 4 to get new content at this stage considering how long it has been since any official DLCs have been released. It's probably more likely attached to Fallout Online.

It's incredibly sad to think that all future Fallout games (games that I've grown up with and loved) are no longer going to be on available on PlayStation, I don't think I can ever forgive Bethesda for that betrayal.

@eastland: While I certainly understand the frustration, Fallout didn't start out as a Playstation title - nor a console title for that matter. The way the market is changing, whether we're talking about music, tv, movies or games, it's all about exclusivity. This is a direction we need to get used to, and figure out how to navigate in. If Fallout is a franchise close to your heart, there's no one stopping you from owning two consoles (or stick with only Xbox or a PC of course). I've had both Playstation 4 and Xbox One in that particular generation for that reason, and upgraded to Series X while waiting for a reason to buy a Playstation 5 (Silent Hill might get me there). Of course you could always choose to skip out on games. But don't call it a betrayal - it's the way the market is evolving, and it'll get far worse in the future.

@lordbeefjerky: not evolving. Devolving. Nothing about it is good for the consumers.

@gaeandilth: It's certainly only adding fuel to the fire regarding the console wars. However Xbox has been lacking a lot for awhile, not only speaking of exclusives, but also it's identity. Sony's deals with for example Naughty Dog and Insomiac has given a very clear vision for Playstation for awhile now, whereas Xbox has long been all over the place with no real common thread. Acquiring Bethesda and Activision Blizzard is not only a power move, but paints a clearer path for Microsoft in the future.

But hey - I'm all for a one-console-to-rule-them-all as well, but I'm not so sure if a monopoly is good for the consumers. Competition makes the developers try harder and not grow lazy.

@lordbeefjerky: Forgot Bungie. But funny Sony was taken to court for antitrust laws over it. Would bet anything that Microsoft was behind that one.

@eastland: Considering that we aren't going to see a new fully fledged Fallout game for at least 10 years, I wouldn't be worrying about it. I'm sure there will be more monumental events in your life within that time frame that will make Fallout not appearing on Playstation seem very trivial. Which it is.

Honestly, I don’t want New Vegas 2. I want a different city. There are so many awesome places for Fallout games to explore, that it doesn’t make sense to do the same place twice. I know Obsidian can make a better Fallout game than Fallout 4, but the Vegas setting isn’t really my thing. Maybe a sequel will change my mind. As long as it’s a good Fallout game, I suppose it’s not a huge deal. I love Fallout, after all. I’ll take any new single player Fallout that releases.
