Gears 5 Dares To Be Different

After earning fans' trust with Gears of War 4, developer The Coalition had the chance to get creative with the franchise formula. Gears 5 is the result.

I haven't played a gears game since the first one, but as a Game Pass Ultimate owner I decided to try out Gears of War 4 in prep for 5 because of these changes. And I'm very glad I did. I personally love it -- thought Gears 4 was a lot of fun, but 5 gives me everything I want in the form of better shooting that feels more precise and manageable while scratching that itch of exploration in the gorgeous environments.

Really nice to see them fleshing out this world by mentioning a place and then you travel there as opposed to a cutscene and then reappearing at the new destination. The world feels right for the lore of the series and at 60fps on Xbox One X, it's a real looker, too. Love it.

I thought GoW 4 was boring as hell and completely unnecessary as a sequel. Here's to wishful thinking that Gears (of War presumably) 5 will be a LOT better.

@jsprunk: after playing gears 5......the campaign is more boring than 4 and the half assed GoW style "open world" is extremely pointless and literally 100% lifeless and the weapons are the exact same. Best part of the campaign is the final part of it, which of course does not last long.

So glad I payed $2 for the xbox game pass instead of full price. This is of course my opinion.

@alucardswrath: Thank you for the info. Looks like GoW 4 will be the last entry in the series that I play.

I'm a series-long fan, but I'm fairly certain this is an advertisement -- not an actual article.

It's great to see how this video acknowledges the evolution of Gears 5 BUT in the review it says the opposite with its lower than fair score.

So tell me GameSpot, is it an "evolution" as you say on this video or is it a "rehash" as you say on the review....it can't be both.

@johnny0779: GameSpot isn't a person. It's two people with two different takes.

@shakesmcqueen: two different takes that only affects their credibility by not coming together as a middle ground.

Based on this latest point of view it sounds like that editor would have scored it 8.5....so it's a substantial difference!
