Tolkien's son gets really angry when people try to connect his dad's fiction with real life events. Expect an angry letter. LOL. I get that Tolkien insisted that his life experiences had nothing to do with the books but, that is completely impossible. He may not have meant them to have connections or influence but you cannot live through a world war, write a book and not expect your life experiences to affect your writing. I'm sure plenty of writers try and claim the same but your writing comes from your personality and how you think and perceive the world around you and much of that comes from your life experiences. It would be difficult in the extreme to completely separate them from your writing. In most cases, you wouldn't even realize you are doing it and usually takes others who know you to point it out.

@bdrtfm: The Professor did not insist that his life experiences did not influence his work. He just insisted that people shouldn't go searching for discrete authorial intent in the archetypal mythology and its heroic legends. These are, after all, translations of translations from older works written in Westron and Elvish. Tolkien knew himself to be the last of many, Misha.

Tolkien was pretty adamant that his stories were not intended to be allegories for actual historical events. In his forward to the second edition of The Lord of the Rings, he wrote:

"As for any inner meaning or ‘message,’ it has in the intention of the author none. It is neither allegorical nor topical…. I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence."

Although I am amused by the (probably apocryphal) tale that Tolkien once criticized his good friend C.S. Lewis for making the religious symbolism in his stories too obvious; Lewis, in turn, criticized Tolkien for not making his obvious enough.

@khankalili: It's entirely possible people that just watched the movies and never read the books have no idea though. You are right if people are true fans they would know all this and probably read The Silmarillion as well but sadly a lot are not readers anymore so all they see are the movies and would have no idea as to Tolkien's background.

I can't see anything wrong with educating people with a quick video if that is how they prefer to view content.

@mpl911: I second that as I read the Silmarillion multiple times and the trilogy of the Ring as well and I always read the foreward and after reading it I did get the idea that is where he got his ideas from being it was an world war. I am happy that he wrote such stories and was an genius at it for I could not stop reading it, All praises to J.R.R.

From bad and terrible things, beautiful and precious things can be conceived. Tolkien's imagination is one of the best examples of this. The Lord Of The Rings is one of the greatest gifts of Literature.

@josefo: Sure is and the literature draws you in and believe me your imagination works overtime to keep up with the story and in your mind you draw the characters. Now out of the Trilogy I loved the Return of the King more than the other two because of the events that happened. The other two was great as well but the massing of all armies of the world was wonderful.
