Immortals Fenyx Rising Vs. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild - Which Is Better?

It’s safe to say that Immortals Fenyx Rising has taken inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but how exactly do the two games compare?

Immortals Fenyx Rising is Ubisoft’s latest open-world adventure, and despite being an original IP takes a fair few cues from a variety of games - most notably The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but also Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed franchise.

In the video above, Kurt Indovina and Max Blumenthal compare Immortals with Breath of the Wild across three topics: exploration, combat, and puzzles. From an exploration standpoint, Immortals offers a very Ubisoft take on the Breath of the Wild formula, with a healthy dose of inspiration from recent Assassin’s Creed titles.

Kurt and Max also break down the two game’s combat, and discuss which title has the more satisfying fighting systems in play. And finally, they discuss Immortals and Zelda’s compelling puzzles - or Vaults vs. Shrines - to see which game has the upper hand when it comes to testing our brains.

Without having played either game, I think I can safely say that obviously Nintendo's game is going to have a lot more care, craft, charm, and heart than Ubisoft's poor imitation. But as someone who'll probably never play Breath of the Wild (given it's the only thing on the Switch I'd be interested in and can't justify paying $300 for a system to play one game - a game that looks decidely worse if playing on a TV), my choices are either Immortals or Genshin Impact. That would've been a more meaningful comparison.

As a Switch-release, clearly BotW. It plays basically two leagues above Immortals, regarding most aspects.

However, Immortals is still a good game - it's just not as easy and cheap as people think to produce a game like BotW. It had a bold vision, which was also reasoned and prudent - backed up by the ressources, patience and talent to create a big quantity of high-quality content.

BotW is violently overrated, I enjoyed the title and it is a far more in depth game than Immortals, which is BotW watered down. There are aspects of both I really enjoy and really hate, weapon breaking in BotW is mind numbing but the exploration is amazing, whereas unbreakable weapons in Immortals is awesome but the exploration is literally just way point hoping. tbf imo neither really deserve a 2nd playthrough

@inzanemaster: Overrated like Dark Souls and Call of Duty?

Uncharted? Overrated...

You want to know what game is Overrated? Death Stranding because I am not seeing publishers jumping on that goofy gloomy fetch quest genre.

So many overrated video games and their clones.

Seriously, what is the point in even asking. I've never played either of these games but I know Breath of the Wild is considered one of the best games ever made. Immortals has received mixed reviews and nothing over a 7/10 as far as I've seen so what really is the point?

@peterhorner1867: one game was a 10 5 years ago, the other is a 7 today. One of the reasons one is a 10 and the other is a 7 is that the latter was derivative and the former, innovative. That doesn’t mean the clone can’t improve on the original formula...

@peterhorner1867: BoTW score is too high. I love Zelda games, but BoTW is really not all that great. Weapon system is one of the worst mechanics in any game. The temples were lackluster and a big empty world. I will say, it was a beautiful looking game.

@rolento25: Do you realize that one of the major strenghts of BotW is about its world being not as empty as your typical open-world?

The world in BotW is even alot more charming and interactive than pretty much any other open world found in other games.

And seen from a game-design standpoint the weapon breaking actually made alot of sense and is by far not that much of a "potential deal-breaker", than a minority of people make it to be. The game was build around this concept, weapons can be found almost everywhere and the majority of them are decently durable anyway.

All this niggling, whimsy-driven and ill-informed "first-world whining" really has to stop.

@hochstreck: As much as I loved botw, i gotta disagree with your opinion on weapon breaking. It wasn't realistic that a skilled warrior like Link couldn't get more than 20 or so swings out of a huge chunk of metal (ie, a sword) without it breaking. Great game, but for me the weapon system was annoying and immersion-breaking. Steel is stronger than all that.

GS and other similar sites are systematically favoring Nintendo, there was never a chance for an objective comparison. I never managed to finish breath of wild, mostly because it was too chaotic and time consuming for my liking.

However i finished God of war, and AC odyssey and enjoyed them a lot. A lot more than breath of wild, Mario too.

For the same reason, i am enjoying Fenyx more!

@croxus: No comparison will ever be objective because any and all opinions are subjective in nature. I, for one, hate Assassin's Creed and rather dislike most Ubisoft games in general for that matter. Admittedly, much is this can be attributed to my intense dislike for stupid microtransactions that are made available to help expedite progression through padded sections that are common-place in bloated gaming experiences such as Assassin's Creed. However! I'm glad you like those games. I definitely prefer Nintendo's offerings by a wide margin but everyone is entitled to like what they like and no one wrong to feel the way they do. :)

Are we really comparing Breath of the Wild to a Ubisoft knock-off?
