I was just talking to a buddy about this same thing. I get that you didn't have the drive to push forward to end game and honestly it would of taken you awhile do to the amount of story quest (and some side quest that imo are worth doing). But the game has changed a lot since launch. The end game is fun and their is an overwhelming amount of content and things you can do. For those who are in to the whole camp thing you will spend countless months trying to earn every single crafting recipe there is and items that can only be obtained from events themselves. Playing the game alone though isn't really fun, like you said better off playing NV, 3 or 4 for single player.

TLDR: End game is where it's at rather you are a fan of collecting/exploring or just doing the events.
