New Xbox One: The Pros And Cons Of Disc-Less

Is the future of gaming digital? We break down the good and the bad of the new Xbox.

The Xbox One S All Digital Edition is finally confirmed, and it's making a lot of people ask themselves whether the future of gaming is digital, and what we'd be missing out on if we abandoned discs altogether. In a new video feature, Jess and Eddie discuss the pros and cons of the new disc-less Xbox One and what it means for Microsoft's vision of gaming's future.

In the video, we dig into all the key particulars about the console including how its lack of a disc-drive might not be for everyone, the price being potentially too high, and if the 1 TB hard drive is indeed big enough.

We also talk about how Microsoft's digital subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold factor into the console, and how the new disc-free system is just an option for those looking to press further into the digital future.

The All-Digital Edition launches on May 7 for $250 USD. Are you interested in the new system? Let us know in the comments below!

It is not cheap enough to offset the downsides of an all digital console. It really needs to be below $200. I mean shit, by this holiday i would be stunned if on black friday the regular consoles will not be available for that price or lower.

A digital game has ZERO value after its purchased. You alone own it. You can not trade it, barter it, sell it used, or trade on craigslist for a hand job. And, as we have already seen with some games. Once a copyright or toolset, or lease expires and you have moved the game off your limited spaced console. You may not be able to download it ever again.

Pros and Cons of Digital Purchases and Subscriptions Only Xbox One S and more:

Pros:

1. Convenience

2. Smaller Formfactor

3. Cheaper

Cons plus other considerations:

1. the digital so-called purchases (explained down below)

2. NO way to play your physical copies of Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games. This includes the many backward compatible titles you may have in your personal collections.

3. No way to play CD Music, Blu-ray Movies, DVD Movies.

4. No way to share your games or borrow games.

5. No way to trade in games or buy used ones

6. Hard Drive too small for today’s big titles (2tb should have been Min)

7. High Quality 4k Movies NOT Guaranteed… Streaming movies do not guarantee the same quality as a physical Blu-ray or DVD in some cases due to ISP’s known for throttling bandwidth, bad connections, low speed cheap service, etc.

8. Digital Download and streaming Limits per month due to most ISP’s charge extra now (I saw that coming years ago from unlimited, then 2tb, and now 1tb per month with %50 rate increases) should you go over 500gb or 1TB per month depending on package. (Example I pay 120 per month for 1GB down /30MB up per month with a 1TB Limit per month. It would cost me $50 per month more for unlimited or $10 per every 50g I go over. $170 per month plus fees and taxes…

9. GWG. Continued subscriptions required to play games with gold or Xbox Game Pass or both. Even Games with Gold that you so called got for free are only accessible if you continue paying for Gold. However, if you still have your Xbox 360 those games you got with gold are still available for life on 360 only or until MS kills the service all together like the original Xbox. Thank Sony for giving this idea to MS.

Possible Improvements:

1. Bigger Storage 2tb Min or 1TB SSD instead for faster loads

2. More USB Ports (plenty of room now for more) Granted All Xbox models should have had at least 2 more.

3. Support External Blu-ray drive if you change your mind later (or could sell a separate proprietary drive to make more money off you like the old HD-DVD player) Maybe even offer this option to all future Xbox Models instead.

4. GWG Life time games when dropped to Silver (Just like the 360)

5. User Upgradable Drive option (SSD’s getting cheap now) since Microsoft still won’t listen to customers demanding SSD drives instead.

6. M.2 SSD Slots on bottom of case would be awesome plug and play ? storage. Samsung has 970 Evo PLus 3.5g read and 3.3G Write. Imagine those load times now.

Special Note on ISP’s (internet providers): Prices are going up and services are going down as usual.

Many locations cannot guarantee the speed plus have monthly caps on how much you can download. The old horror stories of giant phone bills have now transferred to the cable companies going backwards. People getting data overage bills up to $1000 or more with their cable internet providers so limits per month on game downloads thru Xbox One services will be limited due to lack of options or cost of ISP prover packages. Remember those Huge digital games will not only fill your 1TB hard drive fast but also may cap your monthly usage depending on your plan. If you watch movies as well thru streaming that cap will approach much faster. Remember the majority DO NOT have unlimited Data Plans anymore due to not offered or high cost. So an all digital solution product due to ISP's currently costing more today just to save $50 on a console does not make much sense. Being able to buy physical copies movies, music, and games new and used can still be much more cost effective.

Gog, Steam, etc. are still way ahead of MS on Games and GOG lets you backup all your games DRM FREE. At least those digital purchases I can backup just in case those digital services disappear someday. Surprised that Microsoft has not tried to buy steam yet :) However I am a Long time gamer, creator, and more. Collecting many games and consoles thru the years going back to Apple II+, IIE, IIC, IIGS, Atari, Commodore, Amiga CD32, and many other computers and game consoles just to name a few. Physical purchases will always be first priority over digital unless digital gives me the opportunity to make DRM free backups.

I stopped all digital purchases thru Microsoft a few years ago as I had already predicted the changes due to their own marketing blunders and habit forming not listening to what the customers want taking on the Apple stance so to speak. Loyalty to the customers is a bit foggy due to license issues, product abandonment, etc.

At least with my physical movie and music collection I can rip and install my own streaming service that Xbox One now currently supports..(about time).

Examples of bad experience thru digital purchases and more:

Thru out the many years of Xbox and Xbox 360 I purchased over 150 plus Music videos and a few movies thru their store. To this day the Music videos purchased cannot be recovered due to their previous license agreements with third party suppliers expired was the excuse. In return they gave me a $10-dollar credit which I never redeemed out of disgust. I did however continue to buy MS product Like HD-DVD Player for Xbox 360 (150 plus HD-DVD movies in my collection), Lumia 1520, 1020 phones, Microsoft Band, Kinect for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and Music Pass. All of this has been abandoned by MS. I did Cancel Music Pass due to Amazon offering a much better deal with Free Shipping, streaming Movies, Streaming Music, Discounts, etc. all for $99 a year at the time. This is what Music pass cost by itself which showed their inability to compete or making bad deals with suppliers.

There were other digital purchases thru third party like Music Match with over 1000 plus songs lost due to DRM and company out of business. Look at whats happened to Ultraviolet which Hollywood hailed as the push to get people to move to digital which is now shutting down by Jul 31, luckily if you did not delete your account you could transfer your digital collection to another supported provider but be stuck with their terms. Disney shut theirs down in 2011 or 2012 I believe. Now Disney is back with their own service again, round 2.

Now the predicted abandonment and neutering of Groove Music which used to let you Stream your own Music collection from OneDrive while playing games is now gone. Another feature I used regular now gone from both Xbox One, Android Devices, and Windows 10. Yet their own Music player got mostly rave reviews for a change (rare for MS) and now it’s extremely crippled and most likely on the chopping block based on MS past handling of products and services. Now they push you to Spotify which does not support streaming of your own music which would have been nice option, but I will not sign up for another 3rd party provider with another account to manage if they cannot offer the features I once had on my Xbox One and Windows 10 Devices. Too bad they can no longer have the option to offer a true all in one streaming and discounts service like Amazon does. Another marketing opportunity lost.

Originally the Xbox was marketed as a all in one solution providing Music, Movies, Games, and Multi-platform support with Windows 10 devices all under one banner under one account. My next prediction is their movie services will be going away next and cannot trust them at this point hence why I stopped buying digital movies and have gone back to Blu-ray. I have also recently taken a stance on never buying digital games from MS period until that trust and loyalty could be regained and that’s just a maybe.

So basically, the only loyalty I ever received from MS was a $10-dollar store credit/gift certificate after all of that. Buyer beware on an all-digital purchase-rent solution nothing is guaranteed especially when it comes to Microsoft practices. Just because Apple can get away with it does not mean MS can. Now Apple is trying gaming again with their own proprietary streaming games service (Apple Products Only) offering the same games from iPad-iPhone to Mac Computers being able to play on all their devices. Wake up MS Apple on your heals again and may actually work this time, 3rd times a charm ? Maybe.

Hint: More Xbox One games on Windows 10 Devices as you promised years ago which would make Xbox Game Pass much more attractable and make up for some of the current and upcoming blunders on the way.

P.S. Shout out for Pinball FX for at least supporting the digital content transfer from Xbox 360, to Xbox One and Windows 10 Devices without me having to re-purchase everything over and over. The way it should be done and also a kudos to Rock Band for the long support thru the consoles of being able to move purchased music to every version upgrade with the exception of some of the greedy artist/labels that would not participate due to license constraints as usual.

There's no upside unless the console is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper and smaller. There is no upside to this. Support physical media folks, it may be a little more convenient (arguable when you ad lending into the mix) but digital has yet to give us a real industry wide solution to DRM free gaming.

I think MS's marketing is trying again to see if people are willing to go disc less. I am not interested in not this console ever now or down the road. This is like when MS initially told everyone that the future of gaming was streaming with Kinect, well that didn't work out for MS and caused a lot of gamers to switch to PS4 this gen. Instead of asking gamers what they want, MS is trying to tell gamers once again where the future of gaming is headed. If the next gen Xbox is disc less, then I won't be buying one. I'll have to see what Sony does with the PS5. So, disc less xbox, no thank you. I'd say to everyone wait and see how much Google's Stadia console will cost versus this disc less xbox, which I'm also not interested in.

1 TB is not enough. I purchased 1 TB XB1X in January 2019, filled it up first day. I'd say 2 TB is the minimum required for a disc-less system, 4 TB even better.

@pedal2metal214: I'm sure you can still add an external HDD but your point is correct, 1Tb is not nearly enough esp. for a disc-less system.

Internet providers have been steadily raising their rates for broadband while at the same time reducing Data limits. Cable Companies are the largest broadband providers in the country and while people have been cutting the cable the cable companies have been raising internet costs. A few game digital downloads can make you go over data limits very easy. Unless you pay for unlimited data this system will not be as cost effective as it seems. Now had they priced it at $149 or less I could see it as a viable alternative. Right now its a terrible offering.

@creepshow2: also, "high speed" broadband in USA is DRASTICALLY different speeds. The fastest my ISP offers is 60 Mbps. Downloading a patch is already long and painful. I can't imagine having to download the entire base game first as well. It'll be: ALRIGHT NEW GAME! LET'S PLAY!!! WAIT NO. GONNA TAKE ALL DAY TO DOWNLOAD. MAYBE MORE.

good video, and it does represent the future. What wasn't mentioned here though is that Game Pass games can be purchases so they are yours. That point should have been made too.

This is a stop-gap product. There are also supposed to be 2 Scarlett consoles released. One will also be disc-less. That would be the one to get.

@robertbyronz: Disc less sucks. You lose out by going Discless in a number of ways. 1. no ownership over your game. 2. No UhD Blue Ray. If you want the option of having a Uhd blueray player you dont benefit with this one. This is a way for Microsoft to save money and still sell you a box at a semi high price. It will happen with Scarlett also.

@IanNottinghamX: I've already thought of all that. not everyone has the capacity for UHD, and some people don't care. The S is selling for cheap now, and this console coming in at this price? it won't be long before it's discounted as well. This is a stop-gap product. it means nothing. The real consoles will be with Scarlett. and yes, there will be two. Digital is the future, even if we like it or not.

The point that I was making as this isn't the disc-less one to get.. the Scarlett one will be because it'll be more powerful and more capable. $250 is an OK price. it's not great but it's ok. For those out there that want this (not me by any means).. it 'll come down in price soon enough and will have other game bundles.. etc. it always happens.

@robertbyronz: I'm just throwing random thing out here, but it really gets me when people say something is future even if we like it or not. What the hell does that mean? That people don't like something but it happens anyway? Sure it might not be so bad that people start riots and stuff, but if people truly don't like it then something doesn't happen.

Though I guess EA is one example. Millions and millions complain about their practices, but they buy the games anyway and then complain some more. In that case things happen even if we don't like it.

@robertbyronz: Tbh Xbox isnt really the way to go for consumers. Microsoft is one of the most anti consumer companies in existence. I was referring to the idea that we should just accept discless like some sort of benefit when its not to the consumer. Think of what happens 10 years down the line when you want to go back to Scarlett etc and you have no ownership of your games. I remember the digital only game Scott Pilgrim vs the World on Xbox 360. Because of some legal issue people who owned the game couldnt even access that game anymore. Stuff like that as well as other causes will be problems for digital only games unless the companies change their tune.

@IanNottinghamX: the thing is you do still have your games. not Game Pass games, not the free games on Gold.. but all the others.. are tied to your account and you can just redownload them. now if microsoft went out of existence.. yes you would lose them forever. I own many games on disc, but I have to admit I've been going more digital. I don't think it's anything to worry about personally. Sony is the same way. Where are my PS3 games? At least I have my 360 games from the past. Sony isn't doing that at all. with the ps5, they will have backward compatibility, but that's only for the ps4 games. not ps3. want ps3? join PS Now and pay every month for them. just like game pass. For Microsoft, not all games are there in backward compat.. that's true.. I personally would still love Topspin 4, but it probably will never happen.. but alot of games are. When I got my X, I was able to just download them. Personally, I don't like discless, and have no intent on buying that console. I'll be getting the PS5 and the Scarlett with the disc drive. That drive is great for games, and for the 4K movies that it can play.

The One X is very friendly to consumers. You can actually do more with Microsoft's console then you can with the PS4 Pro. Example? The 4k Blu-ray drive.. PS4 Pro doesn't have one, and apps like Vudu on the PS4 won't let you play the 4K movies you bought on the PS4 Pro. Nor does the Playstation store sell 4k movies. they're all in HD. I haven't checked every single movie, but all the popular ones are just HD and it's infuriating when you have a 4K set and you have to switch back to another console when you want to watch your 4K movie in 4K. I'll be getting the PS5 to fix this.

@robertbyronz: What happens when the services stop and you can no longer download a game or retrieve it digitally....yea thats the problem. Another thing is I dont purchase gaming hardware to watch movies etc. You can buy a cheaper device to do all of what youre saying(roku, Amazon firestick, Chromecast etc) Also What you dont mention is the most important part of a consumers experience and thats customer service. Microsofts customer service is the most atrocious in the industry. Sure you can spend money on their consoles, peripherals etc but the instant any of them go bad you are 100% screwed(unless you have some sort of insurance coverage) and thats a fact. Ive had both an Xbox and a controller go bad on me and Microsoft customer supports answer was basically to offer a replacement which was actually more expensive than purchasing a new device and saying tough luck if you cant do that as an option. I dont know about you but when I spend money its an investment for me. I get better value off of a playstation or a gaming Pc than an Xbox with the kind of customer service and customer hostility they have.

@IanNottinghamX: In your example, both Sony and Microsoft would basically do the same thing: offer a replacement. Sony is no better. Where are my PS3 games? Gone and if I want to play those games again, I have to subscribe to PSNOW. Microsoft doing backward compatibility is all for the consumer because you can KEEP those games once you buy/ or insert your disc if you have the 360 game still. that's right.. it's free.. all the graphical upgrades they do? they're not charging for it. If you don't have the games, you can buy them, but if you have them.. you just insert your disc to download a copy to your hard drive. save it to an external hard drive and it's yours. Just like your other downloaded games. yours. this works, although not every single game but enough of them.. again.. Topspin 4 I'll never have on the One X. Just the way it is. it's the same with Sony. They don't have every possible game on offer on PS Now. But at least on Xbox you have a local copy and you don't have to stream it.

In the end, both Sony and Microsoft are in this industry to make money. That's first for them, and don't be fooled by all the good stuff they do and say. It's all about making money. They both have shown it time and again. I posted originally simply describing that the trend is going disc-less and digital. that's always going to be true, whether we like it or not. This new console, as with the disc-less Scarlett is just one option. Microsoft will still be making consoles with a disc drive. they already announced it. That's personally the one I'm getting. I don't think consoles should be offered without one, but Microsoft has already shown that you can play your games offline, which means they're yours. Just don't count on that for Gold free games, or Game Pass games.

my point with movies is that these consoles now are all-in-one devices. you don't need a roku or chromecast if you have a Playstation or Xbox and that between the two, Microsoft's Xbox offers more features and is a better value because of that. Of course all that will change too with the PS5 and then Scarlett. For now it is what it is.

@robertbyronz: I made 1 example but i didnt want to get into it really but trust me when I say Microsofts customer service is the worst in the industry thats my point and I stand by it. Based on personal experience, Their customer service is unprofessional and toxic plus the resolutions they provide arent satisfactory to the issues customers bring them(all you have to do is look this up its happening to alot of other people too). When an item is defective(as in not the fault of the customer but LEGIT defective ) the excuse of "we are in this to make money" is a poor one and an example of my original point. When someone makes an investment(and buying consoles these days at their costs is just that an investment) in a console one expects it to work properly and when they dont the company owes the consumer who made the purchase a working device....minimum.

My point on the chromecast, firestick comment was that those devices(especially the 4k ones especially, do a better job on a whole than a game console at movies and tv shows etc) and are cheaper investments to run movies and shows on for long periods of time(compared to doing it on your $400-500 game console).

Even if it was cheaper I DON'T want it.
Because of all the reasons in the comments and because the whole experience before playing a game is completely gone. PC gaming is already ruined. Remember the times when I went to the store browsing all these game boxes on the shelves etc and then finding the game you want, unboxing it and reading trough all the goodies or booklets that came with it making you even more excited to play the game.. Sigh!

@skairipaPeople said the same things about Records, then came the Cassette, and then they said the same things about the Cassette when CD's arrived. Then came Itunes etc... CD's are on the way out just like the DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. Time will catch up and they will eventually be gone. Change is always hard to accept, but it always comes.

USD 250??????

What????

Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars? US Dollars?

Are they joking???

What is the point of this console if it is so damn expensive? Moneysoft has no empathy. This console should clearly be in the USD 200. And by the way, i am saying this to their benefit. It would be much better for MS to have a lower price point because at current one they won't sell much. Everyone knows this. Now haters gonna hate and bash me with comments of "oh no, it is just a choice" or whatever. Seriously, if it is just a choice but has this relatively expensive price tag then (*newsflash*) it is stupid choice :)

@skektek: There are a bunch of games for the console. I have both consoles with PS4 and Xbox One X and I haven't bought a third party game for my PS4 in ages and everything third party goes to my Xbox One X, PS4 is strictly for first party games and nothing else. My Xbox one X is for everything else from third party to first party games and even when I buy my 4K Blue-Ray disc they go for my Xbox One X since PlayStation 4 is useless and doesn't even have a 4K blue ray disc player and I never buy my movies digital I always buy the disc.

I will never buy a no disc console and I will never supported and if the future is a no disc console then the future will be a dark and terrible one.

Pros: It's cheap.

Cons: It's not as cheap as the version with a UHD drive

Why would anyone buy a console with less options for around the same cost?

The fact that this thing doesn't offer a discount over the one s with the uhd drive leads me to believe this won't sell that good. Also I don't see why they didn't make it the one x instead of the s, but I guess prices didn't change anyway so that's probably why.

Hard drive space for Xbox One is always the same, for digital download or loading a disc. The disc has to be copied to the HDD before you can play. So saying the 1TB isn't enough, although I agree, you're giving false information here.

Edit: While it is also true that you don't "own" the games that you can have access to while paying the subscription to the Game Pass, it is misleading to say that *all* digital games are like that. Games that you BUY digitally, are attached to your account, and you will own them indefinitely, regardless of paying any subscription fees.

@Tekarukite: If there is a physical disk, I can lend it to someone.

To me, it is a potentially damaging DRM scheme. People tend to forget the E3 XOne debacle a while back... People want to have the feeling of owning their games, the ability to lend it to someone, or resell it when done.

Digital media prevents most if not all of that.

@Tekarukite: Unless of course, they ban your account :) Seriously though, I accept there are pros and cons for both digital and physical. As long as we keep the choice I don't see a problem.

The conveniences of digital are great but unfortunately it is horrible for a number of reasons.

1> You can no longer trade/borrow games with friends.
2> Your locked into whatever the online store wants to charge.
3> You can not re-sell your games.
4> You can not buy used games.
5> If the online service goes down you can not play your games (fast forward 10 years when the store no longer cares about you and your games).
6> You don't get the cool artwork and physical collector piece to put on a shelf and to share with friends.
7> You can no longer take your games on the go to play on your friends systems, instead you'll have to pack up your entire machine.

I'm sure there are more, digital is ultimately only a win for the manufacturers as they control the prices and your access to your games. This is _horrible_ for the consumer. Don't buy it... ever!! I know I wont.

@mirswith: Counters to some of your points -

1-> IDK many who still do this but for those that do this one is valid.

2-> Online stores have great sales on games weekly. In today's market most "NEW" games barely keep the NEW price point for very long (With Rockstar games being a strange exception tot hat rule). I'm always able to find great games on sale every month. Microsoft has been killing it with their sales lately and if you have Gamepass you get an additional discount off that sale price.

3-> Valid but this is getting to be less of of sticking point these days. The changing market has almost put Gamestop and similar stores out of business.

4-> See #3

5-> Not entirely true at least on XBox. You can set your system to play offline and run some games offline. Depends on the game. I had no Internet when I first moved to my current location so I know this for a fact.

6 -> I'm with you on this one but I'm so old school this one is already a done deal for me. When the stopped including game manuals and other printed materials with games that changed everything for me. This is something I truly miss.

7 - > Also not entirely true at least on Xbox. You can log into Your profile on a friend's console and download and play your games. Again it depends on the game.

I too will never be down with 100% digital but I am down with having the Option to choose if I want to. Having this cheaper option to plug another console in another room in the house is not a bad idea.

For me they are going to need to really work on that price point. I'm waiting to see what they do with the next gen models and what sales and bundles they eventually have for some of the current gen models.

As a consumer I'm all about having options, and I think they are on the right track as far as that is concerned. It seems MS still hasn't to learned about pricing though. They should have priced this model in the same range as some of those retro boxes...

@mirswith: All are valid points. One more to this list:

8) You loose the ability to use Xbox 1 as a 4K player to play 4k/Bluray movies in case if you have CD collection.

@Master-Shifu: Only from the disk. As a VUDU/Movies Anywhere, etc. customer I can tell you that you will still have access to your 4k UHD digital copies if that's what you purchased. I only buy UHD disks that provide me with copies in all formats. Any wise consumer would do the same. You get way more bang for your buck that way. That I why I love when those Black Friday sales roll around.

@mirswith: All valid points, except 5. Once a game is installed on the hard drive you can play it without an online connection. Its one of the things I like about game pass, and way better than a game streaming service IMO. As to the rest, they might be drawbacks for some, but as they say in the article, at present this is just another option in the MS space. Personally, most of my game collection on my Xbox One X, PS4 and Switch is already digital so it makes no odds to me.

I appreciate that many will not like the rise of all-digital gaming (although it has not bothered the mobile gaming market) but it is unquestionably and inevitably the direction of travel for all the main console manufacturers and game producers in the market, because for them there is no down-side to it. It gives them near total control of revenue, and it's cheaper to distribute. Games will eventually be all digital download and/or streaming, its just a question of how long it will take to get there - and the biggest factor affecting that is availability of reasonably fast and reliable broadband to consumers world-wide.

@matman01: #5 could probably be written better, the meaning was meant to convey when the online "store service" is closed you will no longer be able to access your games. I.e., lets say you delete a game for space, forget about it for 10 years then have that urge to play it again but you can no longer download it.

Your right that all consoles/manufacturers will be headed to be purely digital and that is the problem, its great for the store operators and debatably the developers but terrible for the consumers. I think it is important for consumers to have more options when it comes to our gaming library and to not allow these companies to have full control of how we purchase and access our games; we only lose in the end.

@mirswith: Again, fair point, I had this happen just recently when I lost access to an online box set when Ultraviolet closed down. But I just accept this as a consequence of the storage medium, and it impacts far less in gaming. If I delete a game from my disk and don't play it for even as little as a year and then lose access to it for whatever reason, yes, I'll be irritated, but that is all. If I have not played a game for a year, it is probably because I have moved on to something else. It is also no-different to me buying a game, playing it for a time and then selling it on. Ultimately, all games are essentially rented.

Gamers who want to own games long term are in the minority. The overwhelming majority want to play them through, perhaps multiple times, and then move on.

Also, owning games can be a horrendous waste of money. I've lost count of the number of games I have bought, loaded up, played through the first few sections, and then never touched again. For me, MS Gamepass is a godsend. For a reasonable monthly fee I have access to 100+ games (although admittedly very few new games at the moment). That means that at no extra cost, I can give a game a go, and if it turns out to be not for me, I have lost nothing. That won't be the case for everyone, but it will be for many.

Ultimately, the move to all digital is not good or bad, its just different. Some consumers will be worse off, some better off, but for the majority it will be just the way they access games.

@matman01: I appreciate your stand point but your perspective is from what is good for you and your use case. Having a a single manufacturer control the flow of games sales is a losing scenario for the consumer which is my point. It is all about control, while the companies gain it the consumers lose it. They will have a monopoly on all sales. If you want to bow down to the corporate god and do what they want you to then that is your choice.

I for one will not support it and the day my console options go all digital is the day I stop buying new games. Obviously everyone will have a different point of view and I respect that but in no way will anyone ever change my mind that giving up options is good for me.

@mirswith: As long as there is competition, there will be no one corporate God. Right now we have SONY, MS and Nintendo. Also didn't Google just jump into the arena? We are still a bit away from the corporation, but then when you look at the state of politics in this country (US), folks love establishment politicians.

@mirswith: Of course what I have said is from the standpoint of what I believe is good for me in my situation, just as what you have written is from the standpoint of what you believe is good for you in your situation. The only question is does either viewpoint represent a majority opinion. Who knows? All I am saying is that I believe that the move to all-digital will have little impact on the majority of consumers in the gaming market. Again, I site the mobile gaming market. It's not a question of bowing down to the corporate god, it's just the way I think things will go.

Well first of all, if you're not using a One X, you're selling yourself short. I've been renting and owning games through Gamefly since 2006, (All Hail Gamefly), and with so many drawbacks considering the limitations of the digital-only format, it seems like something most gamers wouldn't appreciate. No more borrowing, sharing with friends, no game buy-back or recycling, no rentals, no option to even watch Blu-Ray or 4k discs? Seems like a pretty bunk deal, I'll keep my disc drive thank you very much, haha!!!

We must be in the Jetson's age, as I whine when I have to hit yet another button. I started off buying only physical on XB1, cuz the digital prices were ridiculous. After they started dropping the prices & providing sales I finally gave in to a few titles. It was the forthcoming of backwards compatibility & the great sales that led me down this dark path and then I started collecting digital games voraciously to build the ultimate library. The other factor that tipped the donkey was the ease at which to backup & transfer ones library from one USB HD to another. So after 2 dozen or so games, I found myself too lazy to swap discs and just played the games on my HD, and off to the races it was and I now have over 500 digital games which I mostly don't play. It gives me great satisfaction though to know that they are there & that I can play them at any time. Without the sale or the other two factors, I don't think I would have caved in.
