Remember When Halo Almost Wasn’t An Xbox Game?

Halo is Microsoft’s crowning franchise, a series that changed console shooters forever, and the face of the Xbox brand. Except, it actually almost didn’t happen that way at all.

In this episode of Remember When, Kurt Indovina looks back on how Halo was nearly a Mac exclusive, dissects exactly how it almost happened, and dares to question what a world would have been like if it actually did happen.Aiding Kurt on his journey is Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, who gives some insight into what it was like to be a Mac developer in the 90s, early iterations of Halo, and the possibilities of what Halo would have been like if it was released only on Mac.

@inmycontrol: Pretty sure it’s ‘An’ Xbox, because the X in this case has the sound of a vowel; “Ex-box”.

I remember having Myth: The Total Codex, for the Mac, and the first disk had trailers for Oni and Halo on it. Neither of those games really turned out quite like their old trailers.

Bungie's first shooter (Marathon) was a Mac exclusive for a while. Makes sense that Halo almost went down the same path.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Marathon remake.

@lemie420: Technically, Bungie's first shooter was Pathways into Darkness. But of their old games, I'd rather get a Marathon reboot too. Or Myth.

Yes, I remember. I was attending a charter school that provided iMacs to all of the students. I was playing Marathon Infinity pretty consistently and messing around with the map editor (forge) when Bungie announced Halo. I was incredibly thrilled.

Halo had a profound experience on my life. I was 12 when it launched and turned 13 the next month. My best friend and I paid for the Xbox in cash and coins (yes nearly 500 dollars including games and controllers) and I remember us trying to purchase Halo only to clearly be questioned about our age. The clerk said that if both our ages were added together we'd be old enough to purchase the game and then sold it to us. I'll never forget the moment we hopped off the Pelican and experienced the world for the first time. We were always competitive against one another but the second we fired up multiplayer it escalated to a level i never could've imagined. Fast forward to now and me and him have played through every iteration together. I've met friends in person that I've met in Halo multiplayer, I've won tournaments, went to the Halo Outpost with said friends. I don't think a game series will ever touch the itch Halo gave me. It truly changed my life.

@Jumbo120788:

Here here.

Halo CE is one of the greatest games ever made. Lightning struck with that game.

To this day I’m still yet to play a FPS that has better enemy AI.

Halo Infinite Iooks to be improving the enemy AI which is just fantastic. Brutes can now lob suicide grunts at you or run to get a better weapon to attack you with. These sound like good additions to the AI and I hope there’s a lot more.

The graphics I thought looked superb.

So sharp and clean and the combat seemed more hard hitting and visceral than any other shooter iv seen yet.

I think the bad press was mainly fanboys shitting on Microsoft for the sake of shitting on them coz you know it’s cool to shit on Xbox.

@gamerbum: Or because the graphics were really that bad and your shilling isn't fooling anyone. There are all sorts of pics around the internet comparing the Brute from those Infinite ads to previous Halos and even the ones from Reach and 3 make Infinite look pathetic. Last I checked, nobody is shitting on Game Pass.

And nobody can tell me Halo's combat feels more hard hitting and visceral than Gears. Halo has a lot of good things going for it, but the cartoony animations and hilarious results of explosions do not make your groin ache the way sawing enemies in half does in Gears.

@Jumbo120788: Amen. I’m still married to my wife then girlfriend who used to be my coop buddy and we’ve played every Halo game together ever since. Apart from Guardians as they took local coop out. Man Msoft really dropped the ball with the XOne generation didn’t they...am hoping Infinite rights a few wrongs they’ve made in the past.
