The Outer Worlds Is The "Mini" RPG We Needed

Obsidian's space-western houses phenomenal writing and an array of complicated decisions. In this video, Mike Mahardy explores why the game's length and replayability make it tone of the best RPGs in a while.

Mini RPGs shouldn’t be sold at full price. This game was so disappointing. I don’t understand GameSpot’s love considering the number of similarly shallow games they’ve ripped the past year.

No crafting. Limited, repetitive loot and gear. Exploration is not rewarding. World is sparse. Combat is so-so. Dialogue gives false sense of choice and actual choices have little impact.

I’m glad I waited to buy TOW if it’s being touted as a mini-RPG. I’ll be waiting until it’s at mini-pricing.

I expected it to be a buggy crappy mess I almost never bought.. what it ended up being, sweet quirky funny awesome, literally all the time, it was not only a good fps but a good rpg, that managed to fix a few long term gameplay design flaws of fallout games in a way that just meshed well with the genre.

it was difficult and remained so, even though you could break the game with certain things, and i got 60 hrs and a great plat for 40 quid, so was well worth it imo the game really comes alive with a 5.1 surround, the immersion is 10x more like the witcher 3 was.

So I've played about 10 hours and I can't for the life of me understand the enthusiasm for Parvati. She's pretty bland so far. Does she get way way way more interesting?

@apnance: No, she does not. She has her own romance quest, and the writing is certainly very well done, but it's not all that interesting.

I.e., you can do a capable job with something, and make a character consistently believable, but somehow still make them not terribly interesting.

The Vicar, OTOH... Have him with you throughout Monarch. Some excellent dialogue, and in particular one camp leader convo... "Let them continue."

...and then blow the fkn idiot skull off the other guy, and his whole clueless band of fools.

Like I said, the devs did a stellar job with making systems/choices like this ACTUALLY work.

Agreed. 1000%
It actually challenges you to try a different play style - and then rewards you for being weird. I love it.

The "sandbox" feel of the bigger RPGs like Fallout and TES was actually what i found myself missing half way through The Outer Worlds. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the game. But when every F**** crate i look in has some pistol ammo, junk i don't need, and some credits, i get bored. I have no incentive to explore the interesting world Obsidian has crafted in TOW.

I still think the only title that's nailed the fine line between "slow paced huge open world RPG" and "more casual quick RPG" is the Witcher 3. Yes it is huge. Yes theres 100+ hours of content. But going to a new bandit camp or dungeon was a 5-10 minute endeavor as opposed to 30+ minutes in games like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.

At the end of the day The Outer Worlds felt like i was playing an open-world-ish Bioshock. The RPG mechanics were fine, dialogue interesting, story and setting was good, but they didn't explore nearly as much as i was hoping they would.

Here's hoping the sequel can manage to have the focused exploring/looting/questing that the first does, but with a bunch more content.

Am I the only one who was completely underwhelmed by The Outer Worlds? I don't know, it was kind of boring narrative wise and the game design was a little "too much Fallout in space." I only have about 7-8 hours in it, so I dunno, maybe something will knock my socks off later on. But overall it was kind of "eh" for me. I think maybe if I'd held out for it to go on sale I might've found more value in it. As it is, I've already moved on.

@Tekarukite: It's funny that you say that cause my friend got Mass Effect from it too, but it hands down feels like Fallout with a space themed paint job to me. Even the time slowing effect has a VATS kind of feel. Then there is all the useless loot. A weak story. Lackluster characters.

Mass Effect and KOTOR had exceptional narratives, characters I cared about, and purpose.

As opposed to what? That's the elephant in the room. Pretty much all the triple AAA developers / publishers are mired in greed infested scandals right now. Outer Worlds is one of a very small group of RPGs that's not trying to hump my wallet while I'm playing the game. Greedfall is another one.

Bethesda (the old king of RPGs) is pretty much dead. I don't think they have enough gas in the tank to weather the tough sell of a new IP in Starfield after all the disgusting shorthanded BS they've pulled off with Fallout 76.

As is the case, the market is going through another cycle. Out with the old, in with the new. Obsidian is a great position. This game is selling beyond all expectations. With Microsoft behind them, the future is a lot more brighter for all of us.

@gregrout: Bethesda was never the "king of RPGs". They made reasonably entertaining open world adventure games, but the RPG mechanics fell somewhere between rudimentary and non-existent.

@mogan: I could see that happening with Elder Scrolls 6. Starfield not so much. They've done a ton of sleazy things under the Fallout 76 banner. The Fallout 76 gamers were sold turned out to be drastically different than what was delivered. That's a key franchise that was all short term gain.

Keep in mind that Rage 2 and Wolfenstein Youngblood also failed horribly. That's two years of garbage and disastrous thuds for game launches.

The theme throughout all this is an insatiable thirst for money. People burned by any of these titles will probably be extremely cautious going anywhere near another Bethesda title, especially a new IP without any history. With their track record they're probably going to "out-Anthem" EA with Starfield.

Personally, at this stage I think the last straw for them as a developer will be Doom Eternal. If they go all Ghost Recon Breakpoint on that title they're pretty much done ...until Elder Scrolls 6.

@gregrout: I think you're over estimating the damage one bad game in the Fallout franchise can do to a game that reminds people this is the studio that made Skyrim and Fallout 3 and 4, and now they've made another huge, sprawling, single player RPG in space.

This is, of course, assuming Starfield is a good game and has a cool looking reveal. But if it is, and Todd Howard gets up on stage at E3 next year, shows a bunch of gameplay, and says it comes out in November, I think most of the gamers who've built up in their minds that they now hate Bethesda over a couple games they probably didn't even buy, are going to be excited to play Starfield.

@mogan: I'd say they get "one more chance" with most gamers.

If Starfield is another F76, and they once again prove unwilling to listen, it'll start hurting their budgets.

Idk I got bored after level 10. It just felt like a slog what with dialog trees overstaying their welcome. I enjoyed dialog-based RPGs like Mass Effect, Fallout and Skyrim, but with TOW it wasn't doing it for me. I think part of it was just the monotony of long NPC conversations in which they stare at you the entire time.

The length of the game was perfect. Not every game needs to be 1,000 hours. There are a lot of really good games that are just too damn long.

I wish the game had a real ending, I wish it had a more grey-ish sense of good and evil, it is pretty much consistent from beginning to the end what is good or evil in this game, which is just so... boring? No plot twists at all too. Forgettable companions, half of the game feels rushed. Maybe a more interesting story could've helped too, I honestly don't think anyone will remember this game in a year.

@Fia1: For a different take, I'd argue the whole thing felt like world-building. They've got a solid base of material to work with now, and the main thing they took a chance on (and got COMPLETELY RIGHT) is the whole "you really can play however you want" aspects.

Now they can start making some of the narratives a little more engaging, and find that level of intensity/urgency that all regions currently lack. Supernova actually just slows things down even further -- after 10 hours I just rerolled and entirely non-combat character and the whole game is a breeze on Normal w/all Mind stats & skills... and flows a little faster.

Love the dialogue between NPCs -- some of the best writing in the game.

...and the CEO of Monarch. Embraces the bureaucratic comedy better than the rest.

Agreed Mike. I think the great thing about TOW is how dense and compressed all the quests and content is for how "short" it is. It is a much more fulfilling experience in 30 hrs than some other 40-, 50-, 80-hr rpgs I've played.

I'm sure Barak understood, there just isn't enough time to do it all... ;-)

I liked what you addressed in this video. In the past when I bought a game that had a possible duration of over 50 hours (RPGs) I felt, "wow, I'm getting my money's worth here!" But nowadays, I see those games, and they go on my list of, "wait for a sale, you will never finish a 50 hour RPG now."

So shorter tales do hold a stronger attraction for me, though good games many times will offer a longer journey for the completest and a shorter "hike" for those that avoid side quests and just go for the cheese at the end of the maze. So something for everyone.

Interesting that after you finished this shorter game, you started again! Some may think, "you started again, so you were fine with a longer adventure..." but I get it, it's different when you jump back into the pool knowing you can do one more lap since you know it's length. Like re-watching a 2 hour movie, but not wanting to start a 4 hour one.

For survival/sandbox games where I can define an end without the feeling of, I stopped too soon, I go in with a different attitude. Kerbal Space Program - 429 hours, Ark - 422, No Man's Sky - 160 hours, Subnautica - 115, etc...

Thanks for the viewpoint.

LOL. Wow. Obsidian must have paid Gamespot a hefty sum to keep posting these glowing reviews. I try to be as honest about my reviews of games as I can and I unequivocally say that Outer Worlds is one of the most boring, disappointing games I've played in a long while. This game is too short, unbelievably dull and clearly should have been in development for 6 -12 more months. This game is sloppy, provides the gamer with absolutely nothing new in terms of combat mechanics, weapons, leveling up and upgrading equipment. The combat is fun for a couple hours then it gets so tedious and dull, you can't wait for the game to end so you can move on to many other far better games. And don't even get me started on quite possibly the worst ending of any game I've ever seen. This game isn't worth any more than $30.

@ooozephyrosooo:

Here's an eye opener: You were never the target audience, and no it didn't need another 6-12 months of development. The game runs pretty much flawlessly, it has the features the developers wanted, and the length is completely acceptable.

You want to know why? It was never meant to be a big AAA release, and the devs have said so themselves. It was a small project that Obsidian have wanted to do for a while, and the project was a success. Now, if we're lucky, that success will spawn a more elaborate sequel

@ooozephyrosooo: "I try to be as honest about my reviews of games as I can" umm...who are you again? Seems to me, you're just like the rest of us - just ONE more person with an "opinion"...who cares what you think about...who cares what I think about it for that matter. Just let people play it and like it, or ignore it. Why is it that if someone likes it they must have been paid to like it? Let me ask you this - based on your comments, do the games you develop offer more in terms of combat mechanics, weapons, leveling and equipment upgrades?

@ooozephyrosooo: so glad others share my sentiment. I kept hearing that the writing and dialogue is amazing but I never saw it as such. It's almost like one person early on said the writing and dialogue was amazing and so that just spread into GroupThink and has been parroted. The dialogue really jumped the shark for me when I saw that one of the dialogue options was "my left nut." I mean, who talks like that outside of middle school boys? Even though the world is semi-open instead of fully open most of the buildings are sealed off. You'll never stumble on a hidden dungeon or camp that surprises you with anything interesting. Tack on the fact that there's no crafting, that none of the items outside of the inhaler were even worth thinking about, and that basically leaves combat as the only thing that can salvage the game but the combat was only passable and felt pretty bland after playing Rage 2 and Borderlands 3 where the combat shines. I only finished the game because I knew it was fairly short and because I had spent $60 on it. If it hadn't been for those 2 things I wouldn't have finished it. I agree that the dialogue usually went on far too long, and that the things you could read on computers and notes and such were always too long and never had anything interesting in them. The only thing that I found impressive was that you could solve missions in different ways, and often by talking your way out of them, but even then the way it was executed was shallow. Simply dump enough skill points into your dialogue skills and you essentially "skip" the mission. Boring. It got to the point where I'd choose NOT to talk my way out of things because at least then I could get into combat where I *might* enjoy something. Between Control and The Outer Worlds I'm not sure which is the most overrated game of 2019 but they're both in contention.

@mogan: I have to admit that I got it for free on XBOX Game Pass, but totally would have bought the thing. It's a blast to play. Doesn't take itself too seriously and it reminded me of the absolutely amazing time I had playing FO:New Vegas. Been pretty fun. At least Obsidian made an honest attempt at creating a solid game with a pretty decent level of fit and finish. The same can't be said for a lot of big games from big developers recently.
