The Resident Evil 4 Deal That Betrayed Nintendo | Remember When

Not only was Resident Evil 4 once a GameCube exclusive, it was also the final nail in the coffin for a legendary deal between Nintendo and Capcom.

In this episode of Remember When, Kurt Indovina looks back on the infamous Capcom Five deal, and the broken promise that left one of the gaming giants, and its fans, betrayed and heartbroken. @nintendians: It clearly wasn't a legal deal, but more of a handshake deal.

I remember this as well, it was definitely supposed to be a Gamecube exclusive and im still surprised that nintendo didn't sue capcom for the breach of contract, maybe they felt sorry for them because yes, the gamecube sold like ass. RE4 is one of the greatest games in history though, ive played through it like 10 times and also played it on multiple consoles, even on the PC, and xbox I think. I was dissapointed in the beginning when it was ported out and capcom backstabbed nintendo over it, but if the greedy grubbers didn't backstab nintendo, then we wouldn't have seen the game in its full potential, with updated gfx on the PC. So...alls well that ends well.

It was fun how the Game Cube version was the more incomplete but also the one that technically better worked until the Wii version came out. PS2 added a lot of content into an already beffy game but the game sometimes couldn't keep up and the PC version published by Ubisoft was atrocious until the proper re release.

@santinegrete: Not sure why people say that. Some of the effects weren't as nice as the GC version, true, but when I replayed RE4 recently I didn't encounter any issue that would suggest the PS2 couldn't handle the game.

@Barighm: maybe they are more unusual than I remember, I played the PS2 version too and definetly remember how the game slowdowns when the camera is close to something burning, you or enemies.

@santinegrete: The only thing I can think of is that the Greatest Hits version was patched or something.

It was somewhat treacherous of Capcom but I guess I understand their stance of ensuring that they stayed afloat. RE4 should have been a system seller but most people I knew were resigned to one system in those days and weren't prepared to fork out a week's wages for one or two games. I still own the game and my Gamecube and didn't feel too upset about the loss of an exclusive but I can understand Nintendo's dismay with Capcom.

Good vid, Kurt.
