Who Is Mysterio? Spider-Man: Far From Home Villain Explained

The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer made it clear that Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) will play a major role in the new MCU movie. Let's take a look at Mysterio's Marvel comic origins.

The latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer has arrived, and it has given us a better look at Jake Gyllenhaal's role as Mysterio, who is seemingly Peter Parker's ally. In the comic books, this Spider-Man character is actually a villain, so as you may have guessed, comic book readers don't buy Gyllenhaal's Mysterio as a good guy just yet.

Also known as Quentin Beck, Mysterio made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 back in 1964. He was a struggling special effects artist who used his knowledge to commit crimes, rob banks, and be the dastardly '60s villain readers grew accustomed to.

He was a bit of a silly villain at times, using his holographic illusions to cause mischief, and considering he's been a staple in Spider-Man comics for over 50 years, he has a pretty deep history. In the video above, we're going in-depth into who Mysterio is and where this character comes from.

Please don't fail me now. The biggest disappointment about Raimi's series being cancelled was that I really wanted to see Mysterio. Even if the combat CGI was a bit lacking back then, there were millions of options they could do with Mysterio's special illusion. Plus it's the natural thematic continuation, making Spidey once again question his role when his best friend is dead and then a new superhero arrives to completely outshine him.

Man I loved how those movies made Batman seem like a stable happyhappy-hero.

Anyone else think Jake seems completely out of place in this role? I mean, he looks kinda silly.

@mooglestar: I kinda agree, he does look odd as Mysterio.

But I just realized that the domed villain is being played by the actor that was bubble boy so...

@Ovirew: He really is a very talented actor in my opinion. A chameleon too. Long since the Bubble Boy days haha. But this role... I don't know. I never pegged him for a Marvel movie type. And his hair looking cray.
