You Don't Have To Understand Death Stranding

Kallie, Peter, and Tamoor discuss why it's okay to not understand everything about Death Stranding before playing it and how Kojima wants the game to evoke the Japanese concept of omoiyari.

Death Stranding has been shrouded in mystery. Since the moment it was announced the particulars of its gameplay have been unclear and, unsurprisingly, this has become the focal point of the discussion around it. As we inch closer to the game's PS4 release, director Hideo Kojima has been pulling back the curtain on mechanics that underpin the experience and talking about the concepts that have inspired it, providing a little more clarity on what Death Stranding is.

Perhaps the most enlightening source of information has been the recent round of interviews, including GameSpot's very own interview with Hideo Kojima. In this interview, the auteur game developer discusses his hopes for what he's calling "Strand Games." After interviewing Kojima, Peter sat down with Kallie and Tamoor to discuss the mystique of Death Stranding, how the community has reacted to it, and whether there's actually a benefit to not knowing.

You dont have to understand it, its not important, youre not smart enough to anyway, so just enjoy this game about the concept of omoiyari, is it? The Japanese cover story for sticking your nose in other peoples' business. I MEAN THE CONCEPT OF COMPASSION MY BAD HAHA BECAUSE COMPASSION IS A IDEA AND NOT A PRACTICE. B**** Please.

Omoiyari? Empathy/compassion? Sorry, but the second you stick a baby in a jar, I'm going to want to shake it like a fetus cocktail, empathy be damned.

I don't think that this time Kojima was using misinformation and deception here at all. It's a new formed team and their first game so they want to sell it to be able to get other project running, it make sense. He was asked by SONY to make a new concept game and this is what he get to.

At the begining they were showing some cool combat and dark atmosphere with weird baby caring feature but since they show more and more of the game and each time it got a lot of backlash from the gaming community and each time it get worst and worst.

Some sell them heart and mind to Kojima without second thought cause he had make such a unbelievable serie that is the MGS one, yes but others see what cool game Kojima made in the past? ZOE? definetly not for everyone even if you like MGS some are absolutly disgusted by ZOE.

So what to think of that? As time goes counted down to the release Kojima made numerous aparition here and there to try to sell his game and even him is not sure what to think of it and wasn't able to adequatly explained it and he acknowledge that.

The game show very cool graphics and some interesting gameplay mechanic but fail hard to show us combat, sneaking, interection with NPC other that some holographic stuff. The concept seem weird: transporting package across a devasted country that all. It show very little or nothing of a story or any kind of scenario.

In the end it will probably be a game to try but definitly not something to buy day one maybe even after all other great game coming by soon this one got the last spot on the list and by far and it's a huge fan of Kojima that is writing those lines (Can't believe I do that right now).

Kojima seem desperatly trying to promote an already doomed game that he know for himself that is not the standard we used to with him. When he is on something good he play with us and make us expect the unexpected but this really not what he is doing right now with Death Stranding.

Can't wait to see what metacritics will tell of this but before seeing those it's a no go for me.

I've been a fan of Kojima ever since MGS on PS1. What I've learned since then, is that he likes to spread misinformation and deception when promoting his games. What he decides to show during promotion leading up to release is meant to get the player to get a preconceived idea of what the game will be and then the player is surprised when the game is not what they expected.

He did this for MGS2 showing us only portions of Snake and the Tanker and then surprising us with Raiden (an unpleasant surpise though). He did that with MGS3 again making us think we would pay as Snake but then surprising us with Big Boss. With MGS4 he was more direct as there was little room for deception due to the story being a direct sequel of MGS2 but even then he managed surprises with the ending reveal. Lastly with MGS5 he went as far as creating a dummy gaming developing company and showing some bizarre trailer during the Video Game Awards. He then also managed to surprise us by making us think we were controlling Big Boss and pulling another fast one at the end.

I agree with many that what we have seen so far is a little bizarre and to some extent disappointing, but I have hope that this is another of his deceptive promotions and the game will throw us for a loop once is played. I'm still picking it up because I enjoy Kojima's wacky stories and the way he threads them.

High minded art has always had its critics. Especially for those who start to feel somehow triggered because it insults their level of intelligence. So in order to compensate for this feeling, they attack the art, the artist, and start to belittle it so they don't have to deal with the idea that perhaps they are lacking in any way shape or form.

Tale as old as time.

@Bread_or_Decide: Yeah, well, "high-minded" artists who have moments of success also have a habit of turning into arrogant turds who churn out complete crap later, resting on their laurels and expecting their name to carry their product as opposed to its substance. The coin has two sides (and an edge).

@esqueejy: They take risks, it doesn't always work out. I feel like its the ones most intimidated and offended by art that seem to think these artists are "arrogant turds." How dare they create something that has meaning to them. I think the real misconception is that they even care what we think or that we have the final say on their work. Kojima has proven himself enough, he's not some one hit wonder, he's made enough games. I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt, and if death stranding fails, it's not some judgement on his entire career.

@Bread_or_Decide: I think you're going a bit overboard with the overgeneralizations about what people think, which in the process is functioning as you patting yourself on the back as smarter than the people you're overgeneralizing about. You're not. This article is a red herring distraction anyway. Not everyone is criticizing the game because it has no meaning or because they can't discern its meaning. We're doing it because it looks stupid so far....for whatever idiosyncratic reasons it looks stupid to us. I'm sorry if you find a luggage fetish and ladders that defy the laws of space to be interesting, but some of us don't.

It also has nothing to do with Kojima, his career, his supposed legend and mythological status for some people and certainly nothing to do with giving him the benefit of the doubt. People are reacting to what they've seen...and some of us think it looks stupid so far. I personally am keeping an open mind and will be interested to see what non-Kojima-sycophants have to say about it when it's released and people have had time to absorb what's there, be it a fine wine or rank piss, but the game is so ripe for being made fun of and cracking jokes that I can't help it. A frickin magic baby in a jar...sigh...

@esqueejy: That's the irony here, no one has a bigger sense of humor about his work than Kojima. We're talking about the creator of a franchise that read your memory card, asked you to put down a controller so that an in-game character can control it, and specifically mentioned blurays in MGS4.

There's always an acknowledgement in his work that these are indeed video games and video games are weird. Everything about them is weird. You think you're laughing at the game, the game is laughing with you.

This idea that it looks stupid. It looks no different than breath of the wild. Open world, exploration, make your own fun. And nobody thought BOTW looked stupid. This is mostly coming from death stranding being unfamiliar and unknown. It's new and new things are scary unless they fit into a very easy to understand mold.

@Bread_or_Decide: WTF don't you understand about this? It's pretty damn simple: YOU don't get to decide why other people have a different opinion than you. THEY do. It looks stupid to me because running around with a magic jarbaby, playing with and trying to manage 16 suitcases, and fiddling with a ladder that defies the laws of physics look stupid to me conceptually and they don't interest me at all and strike me as not fun. Many people agree with that. Many people agree with that conclusion but for different reasons. You don't get to generalize everyone with that opinion and label them as simply scared of something new and unfamiliar. Those are concrete reasons for thinking this looks stupid so far that have nothing to do with being put off by new and unfamiliar things.

I love new and unfamiliar things...that don't strike me as boring or stupid or pretentiously weird for the sake of being weird or deliberately vague and fakely mysterious or whatever.

@Bread_or_Decide: Calling Kojima's intentionally nebulous arglebargle storytelling "high minded art", that is just too darn threatening for the dum-dums, is pretty funny.

Based on what I've seen, I now have a pretty solid idea of what the game seems to be, and what he means by "Strands". And it strikes me as the kind of stuff that would be interesting mechanics around the margins of a more interesting core experience than running around a map delivering stuff to people, connecting them to a "network" that will eventually span the country, and allowing you to give "Likes" to ladders and charging stations built by other people.

His ongoing fixation with showing off extremely self-indulgent, nonsense mechanics like the mushrooms, stunt cameos, as well as high-detail renders of his new Hollywood friends, also doesn't fill me with confidence. Oh, and replacing boots that apparently last about eight minutes before disintegrating on your feet, because if there's one thing everyone loves, it's durability mechanics. And having to maintain your balance manually.

Maybe the game will be great, despite Kojima's gargantuan ego. I hope it is. But based on what I've seen, it just looks like what happens when you give Kojima a bunch of money, with little oversight or expectation.

I always had a hard time digesting Kojima games after MGS. The games he makes are technical marvels but with incoherent and (silly) stories. If he likes to raise questions and grind our minds (as well as his own), he successfully does so.

But Kojima games are always a mixed bag to me. They are indeed something out of the norm. I have no excitement about Death Stranding at all, because i pretty much know what this game will turn out to be.

Random thoughts typed during the ads:

--I'm still curious how hard it is to get-supplies. If we're to be jazzed when we find a water bottle, what does it take to get these things?

--I've come around to the idea of traversing vast land without fighting...I just hope there's something puzzle-like, and not just....hmmm, yup---ladder.

--One thing that might curb trolling, is that the effect is never witnessed. What good is a troll-move if the troll can't see it play out? Online there's a vast stage to watch people lose their cool, but in a single player game not so much.

--The idea of not knowing what a product is, is rare enough these days. We may not know how it "games" but I'm still hopeful it will reveal itself gradually along the way.

Gaming Journalists decrying gamer's wanting details of the actual purpose of the game, that's a strange reversal. I don't think anyone is asking for exact story details. The easiest thing that could be done is show a mission. Show 15, no even 10 minutes of some non-important story mission. Some interaction with interesting story Characters and some combat. Something with some structure. That's what most people are asking for I think.

Imagine if Skyrim had just shown trailers of you running around and picking berries and mining, then going to the alchemy table, then showing you swimming and selling goods. When asked, Bethesda says, 'Well we just want you to feel like it's an open world you can do anything in.' I mean they kinda had that trouble with 76 right? Sure they show a dragon off in the distance and some magic enemies, but lets just focus on all the crazy deep armor crafting, alchemy and selling dynamic.

It's not the best marketing strategy in my opinion. I get Kojima wants to show his artistic expression, his vision, but it's always good to show people there is an overall objective to the game that will drive them to play further into it. Again, the game looks fascinating, but it looks like a sci-fi human cargo simulator. I'm sure it will do well, because Kojima was seen as the victim of Konami and everyone is excited for his new pure game, but I hope it has enough of a cohesive objective to keep people interested in the world and story, or his next game may not be received so well by the fans.

-Edit- Wait, Wait, is that the same Tamoor that wrote a whole article raging over the Sam Raimi Spider-Man suit being added to Spider-Man PS4 for free and here he's saying people shouldn't just snap at Death Stranding and tear it down because it's not well defined? That was a good chuckle there.

Like ... yeah, I don't need to understand what the game is, and it'll probably be a crazy spectacle that I want to experience at least some of ... but as, like, a 2 hour, Gone Home style game that I spent $10-20 on.

I watched Kojima narrate an hour and a half of game play from TGS, and never saw the actual game. I saw a bunch of wacky ancillary mechanics and systems that could flesh out a game and keep people engaged beyond whatever the core game play loop is ... but I didn't see anything that looked like a reason to actually PLAY Death Stranding. It was just tour of weird, slightly personal feeling little game systems this crazy man thinks would be cool to see in another game someone else will make.

@mogan: The terrifying thing, is that I think all of those ancillary systems basically were the meat of the game, aside from story cutscenes.

After like 90 minutes, I had watched a guy walk around delivering boxes to people, change his boots, run away from bandits, ride a motorcycle, and deliver more boxes. Oh, and micromanage the happiness of the pokemon strapped to his chest.

So of those systems look pretty neat and innovative - but as you said, around the edges of a more interesting actual game.

I think the most cringe-inducing part of the presentation, was when you arrived at that city, and Kojima was basically explaining how you were supposed to feel when the music started playing. And then he acknowledged that you can't actually enter the city - but you can enter the "distribution center"! Meaning you're literally just going to various box receptacles.

@mogan: I'm all for the wackiness and customization. Put as much of that in a game as you want. Like you said though, where is the purpose of the game. Where are the cohesive events that makes you want to continue playing and (re)building this world? I haven't seen it yet. I don't need Kojima to spoil the story, just show us some sequences of consequence.

A mission that has a visible outcome, some charming or whacky characters to be around. At this point we've seen all the crazy open world things you can do. I love Just Cause, love Just Cause 4, but I don't play it like I would say Resident Evil 2 remake.

This guy is already in damage control mode. Letting us already know, he doesn't understand it. Might need sequels for things to make sense, might not be fun till halfway through etc etc.

It's a dumpster fire waiting to happen. Unless you a Kojima cultists of course.
