Xbox One Games With Gold For April 2020 Revealed

While April’s PlayStation Plus freebies for PS4 leaked early, Microsoft’s Games with Gold lineup announcement arrived at basically the latest possible moment. As always, the newest batch of four games will be staggered across the month, with the first two games unlocking tomorrow, April 1. Xbox One users get to keep Games with Gold free games in their library as long as they have an active Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Slightly Mad Studio’s 2017 racing sim Project Cars 2 will be free throughout the whole month of April. Project Cars 2 features a staggering collection of more than 180 vehicles to choose from and 140 tracks across 60 locations. The realistic sim earned a 7/10 in GameSpot’s Project Cars 2 review for its fine-tuned physics, dynamic weather system, and sheer variety of racing formats, which includes off-road contests with rallycross cars.

Xbox 360 title Fable Anniversary is also up for grabs on April 1. A remastered version of the original entry in the Microsoft series, the action-RPG also earned a 7/10 in GameSpot’s Fable Anniversary review. While the original Fable never truly lived up to its pre-release hype, it’s still a fun game that’s worth checking out if you’ve never visited Albion. Fable Anniversary will be free for subscribers through April 15.

Come mid-month, members will be able to pick up Knights of Pen and Paper Bundle and Toybox Turbos. Knights of Pen and Paper bundle includes both of the well-received games in the series, which feature gorgeous pixel art and interesting turn-based combat. Meanwhile, Toybox Turbos is a top-down tabletop racing game with 35 customizable vehicles and 18 zany tracks.

Subscribers still have until April 15 to snag the excellent platformer Shante: Half-Genie Hero, one of March’s Games with Gold freebies.

Gears 5 Operation 3: Gridiron Patch Notes Now Available

The Coalition is preparing the next big update for Gears 5, which will introduce Operation 3: Gridiron. The extensive patch notes for PC and Xbox One cover everything coming in the update, from new character drops, achievements, and changes to ranked playlists.

The biggest deal is the arrival of new additions to the roster: Cole, Clayton, Myrrah, and the Theron Guard. As a former Thrashball player, Cole gives the update its gridiron namesake. In response to player feedback, the studio has reduced the requirements to unlock the new characters. They’ll only take half as much character XP to earn as previous ones–30,000 down from 60,000–and they will no longer need to fulfill challenge requirements. Previous Operations characters will retain their old requirements, out of fairness to those who already earned or bought them.

If you’d rather just unlock all the new characters at once, you can buy the Gridiron Bundle for $20. That will grant you the four new additions, the Hot Rod weapon skin set, 1000 iron, and 30 days of boost. You can always buy individual characters for 500 iron apiece.

The update will also introduce a new Escape Hive, called the Barracks, and changes to ranked playlists. You can check out the full patch notes below.

The Outer Worlds Gets June Nintendo Switch Release Date

Back in February, the Nintendo Switch version of The Outer Worlds was delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as port developer Virtuous has offices in Singapore and China. The pandemic continues, but the Switch port has a new release date this June.

The Outer Worlds will release for Nintendo Switch on June 5, and it will be available as both a digital download and a physical cartridge. The physical version, which was not originally planned, will require an additional patch on launch day that will take up to 6 GB of space, and it adds higher-resolution textures and other gameplay improvements.

“We appreciate your dedication to the Board,” Obsidian said in an in-character update post on its website. “And remember: it’s not the best choice, it’s Spacer’s Choice!”

The Outer Worlds first came to Xbox One, PS4, and PC in October 2019. The game was in development prior to the studio’s acquisition by Microsoft, and it isn’t clear if a potential follow-up would also release for these systems or would only be on Xbox and PC platforms.

Despite the Switch delay, The Outer Worlds had already managed to sell 2 million units by February. The shorter role-playing shooter drew clear influence from the Fallout series — for which Obsidian created Fallout: New Vegas — and it received a warm reception. In GameSpot’s The Outer Worlds review, Edmond Tran was particularly fond on the game’s storytelling, world, and art design.

Resident Evil Resistance Beta Finally Hits PS4 And PC

After experiencing technical issues that delayed the PS4 and PC versions of the Resident Evil Resistance beta past their Xbox One counterpart, the beta is now live on all platforms. It will run until Resident Evil 3 launches on April 3.

Game director Al Yang shared the news on his Twitter page, adding that players will need to download the game’s latest update if they still cannot play the game online.

The beta’s launch comes just a few days before Resident Evil 3 releases on the same systems. All copies of Resident Evil 3 come with Resident Evil Resistance as a free bonus, regardless of whether they are digital or physical. It was originally announced as a completely separate game, but was revealed as a freebie when Resident Evil 3 was revealed in January. It is the only way to get Resident Evil Resistance.

Resident Evil Resistance is a non-canonical asymmetric multiplayer game starring a group of survivors who must escape from a mastermind’s facility as traps and monsters are thrown at them. One player controls the villain and can carefully plan how to attack the group, but if they manage to escape, the match is over.

The multiplayer component could help to make Resident Evil 3 a more compelling buy, but we have mixed feelings right now. In GameSpot’s Resident Evil 3 remake review in progress, Alessandro Fillari found the game’s best moments were early on and it couldn’t keep up its tension for the entire six-hour runtime. A full review will be available once we have played more of Resident Evil Resistance, and you can learn how to pre-order the game with our launch guide.

Batman V Superman Director Reveals New Secrets About The Movie

Four years after it released to lukewarm reviews, Snyder has returned to Batman V Superman, hosting a live watch party with commentary on social media app Vero. For those who missed the livestream, The Hollywood Reporter caught some of the most interesting tidbits from the viewing.

During this postmortem-style stream, Snyder addressed some of the criticisms that have been leveled at the movie since its release–including the infamous Martha moment. Snyder pointed out that the Martha moment is more about Batman’s humanity than it is about their mothers simply having the same name, the moment is intended as a catalyst for him to empathize with Superman.

Another moment that received criticism was the similarity of the Wayne Tower’s collapse to 9/11 imagery. Snyder has said that this was purposeful, in order to evoke an emotional reaction and draw comparisons to the kind of trauma it would cause for Bruce Wayne.

Throughout the film, Superman is framed with religious iconography, beginning with the Day of the Dead sequence. This all comes to a head with the kryptonite spear Batman creates to kill Superman, echoing the Spear of Destiny that was used to pierce Jesus’ side as he hung on the cross. Without the religious parallels however, it seems strange for the technologically advanced Batman to choose such a primitive weapon.

Other interesting tidbits include the fact that Wonder Woman could have been set in various other wars–the filmmakers had discussed earlier wars that could have begun her story, such as the Crimean War of 1853 to 1856, or even the American Civil War.

Snyder has never been shy about correcting people who mis-read the intended messages of his films, and how he handles fan-favourite characters. With the Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition running for just over 3 hours, he had plenty of time to talk about it in this livestream, and you can check out more of the facts he dropped at The Hollywood Reporter.

After the movie was over, Snyder finished by saying the film should get a sequel. Combined with some sneaky references to his intended cut of Justice League, the Snyder Cut movement is about to get excited all over again.

Dead Or Alive 6 Updated To Ver. 1.21a, And The Next Update Will Be Its Last

Dead or Alive 6 has received an update, bringint it to version 1.21a, and as it turns out this is the penultimate patch the game will receive. One final update will introduce more DLC in mid-April, the game’s official Twitter account has revealed.

The new update, 1.21a, has been detailed on the game’s site. Here’s what it contains:

  • The hair color change system underwent a large-scale revision: hair color change can be now unlocked on permanent basis for any hairstyle that features it, and includes all available colors (e.g., if you purchase Hair Color Change for Marie Rose’s “Long” hairstyle, you will unlock all 16 hair colors for this hairstyle.)
  • All Premium Tickets that were used to purchase hair colors prior to this update have been refunded (e.g., if you have used 5 Tickets to purchase hair colors on v1.20 and v1.21, you will receive 5 Premium Tickets when you apply the v1.21a update.)
  • As a result of the large-scale revision of the hair color change system, all hair color settings have been reset to default.
  • The number of Premium Tickets that can be purchased has been limited to the maximum number of items that can be exchanged for Premium Tickets.
  • Added the information display that shows the number of remaining available costumes and hair colors that can be exchanged for Premium Tickets.
  • Added the information display that shows the maximum number of Premium Tickets required to unlock all available costumes and hair colors.

The game’s final update will focus on adding DLC, and will also contain some bug fixes. The details are listed in the tweet embedded below.

Dead or Alive 6 released a free-to-play version in December, called Core Fighters. The game has been criticized more recently for its approach to cosmetic DLC, as the game charges money to change character’s hair–even if you’ve purchased that hair color previously.

Dead or Alive 6 received a 7/10 in GameSpot’s review, and reviewer Heidi Kemps found a lot to like about it: “Despite some missteps, DoA6 is a fun, engaging fighter with great-feeling, easy-to-pick-up combat, a strong sense of visual style, and a lot of personality.”

Tiger King Prompts Florida Sheriff To Seek New Leads On Don Lewis’ Disappearance

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is a Netflix true crime documentary focusing on the bizarre world of private exotic animal collectors in the USA. It’s been keeping viewers hooked with a story that seems too insane to be true, featuring murder plots, polygamy, drugs, tiger maulings, and rich husbands mysteriously disappearing.

It’s the last of those that Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister is interested in, however. The sheriff has posted out a tweet that namechecks Netflix, the Tiger King doco, and even the COVID-19 quarantine situation for bringing the case back into the light.

The disappearance of Carole Baskin’s husband Don Lewis is the focus of the series’ third episode, The Secret (spoilers if you haven’t watched this far yet). Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue and nemesis of titular Tiger King Joe Exotic, inherited most of her multi-millionaire husband’s wealth when he went missing in 1997, leading many to accuse her of having a hand in his presumed death.

Joe Exotic and others interviewed for the documentary aren’t shy of accusing Baskin of murdering her husband, even claiming she could have fed his body to the tigers. Baskin for her part maintains her innocence, saying she would rather Lewis’s body was found so she could clear her name once and for all. Other theories suggest Lewis faked his death and fled to Costa Rica in secret. Since the documentary was released, a post has been published on Big Cat Rescue telling Carole Baskin’s side of events and how she feels they were misrepresented in the documentary.

Whatever happened to Don Lewis, Sheriff Chronister wants to find out. With Tiger King repeatedly taking out the number one spot in Netflix’s internal chart, in a time where more people than usual are watching Netflix, there’s a possibility that one of those viewers could have a legitimate lead. And if they do, maybe we’ll get a Tiger King Part 2?

Xenoblade Chronicles On Switch Cuts Some Features From The 3DS Version

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is coming to Switch on May 29, complete with new story content and upgraded visuals. But while this release has the potential to be the best version of Monolith Soft’s beloved RPG, it will be missing two features introduced in the 3DS version of the game.

As spotted by Twitter user Luxin, the Japanese store page for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition says that the “Collection Mode” and amiibo compatibility of the 3DS version will not be available in the Switch edition.

The Collection Mode allowed you to use tokens to unlock 3D models that could be viewed, as well as music from the game. Tokens could be unlocked using Streetpass tokens or with the Shulk amiibo. In fact, scanning Shulk to unlock tokens was the only amiibo functionality in the game.

While it’s not the biggest feature, it’s a shame that the game’s Definitive Edition will be missing a feature from the 3DS version, which was very good despite having to compromise on the game’s graphics.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition will come with new content that veteran players can access from the start. Here’s our guide for how to preorder the different regional collector’s editions.

Xbox Live, Game Pass Seeing “Record Numbers” Amid COVID-19 Crisis

As more and more people stay home, either voluntarily or by government order due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Xbox Live gaming network is surging in popularity. Microsoft said in a post that Xbox Live, Xbox Game Pass, and Mixer are seeing “record numbers” as people spend more time playing games while adhering to social-distancing policies.

The message, which was first reported on by VideoGamesChronicle, also states that Microsoft is making “small adjustments” to ensure a smooth experience for users during the spike in usage. One of the adjustments is the removal of the ability to upload custom gamerpics for your profile. Not only that, but you can no longer upload pictures for club backgrounds.

This change is only temporary, so these services will return at some point in the future.

A separate post from Microsoft regarding its cloud networks states that Microsoft’s engineers are keeping a close eye on “performance and usage trends” to ensure that Xbox Live is optimized for people around the world. Microsoft is also taking steps to minimize the impact of increased bandwidth by asking its partners to hold back their “higher-bandwidth activities,” which include game updates, for off-peak hours.

It’s not just Xbox Live that’s seeing big numbers during the global lockdowns. Valve’s Steam platform continues to set and then break its own record for peak concurrent users. The service eclipsed 23.5 million peak concurrent players recently, which is an all-time high for the network.

The Tiger King/The Office Crossover You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you haven’t yet heard about Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, it’s the latest true crime documentary to take the world by storm, repeatedly topping Netflix’s internal top 10 list–and now it’s being mashed up with Netflix’s most popular show of all time.

Revolving around a cast of very real but still larger-than-life characters, Tiger King has provided plenty of fodder for new memes–and it was only a matter of time before it got mashed up with other popular TV shows.

The Office actor Rainn Wilson has mashed up his character Dwight Schrute with Joe Exotic, the documentary’s titular Tiger King. The resulting photo is a true gift to the internet, blessing us all with “Dwight Exotic”.

Of course, Dwight isn’t the only character to have been mashed up with Joe Exotic’s self-proclaimed, mullet-sporting, “gun-toting gay redneck” style. Comparisons between Exotic and the President of the USA have resulted in this far more horrifying image:

The TV series has spawned more than just memes, however–a Florida sheriff is hoping the documentary’s popularity will help him solve the decades-old cold case of Don Lewis’s disappearance.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is streaming now on Netflix in a seven-episode limited series.
