Anthem Executive Producer Spills Plenty Of New Details About The Game

Lots of new details about BioWare's new game.

Mark Darrah, executive producer of Anthem, has been busy on Twitter answering players' questions about BioWare's upcoming RPG. Many of the questions are answered with information we already learned about the game during E3 2018, but there are a few new tidbits of information hidden in the horde of tweets.

Lots of players wanted to know about loadouts, and Darrah had plenty of information to share. Players will have the option to save multiple custom Javelin loadouts. They won't be able to switch between them during combat, like players could in Mass Effect: Andromeda, but at least they won't have to reallocate weapons and equipment between each mission. Once you find a certain loadout that works, you'll be able to save it before trying something else.

Now Playing: Anthem Is The Iron Man Game You Always Wanted

Speaking of the weapons, equipment, and other rewards that players will find while exploring, Darrah offered further insight into how item acquisition would work. The level of dropped gear will be based on Freelancer level so you'll be able to switch up Javelins easily throughout the game. That loot will bias towards whichever Javelin you're wearing at the time, but players will find rewards for every Javelin while playing. Not all rewards are unlocked via combat or mission completion either. Some are found through exploration. Darrah even hinted that some might be located underwater. There won't be item trading between players at launch though.

Here's a few other details that stood out to us:

  • Even if you're not in a group with them, other players can still interact with you. Strangers will even be able to revive you if they happen to run across you after you've fallen in combat.
  • There will be no aerial fights against rival Javelins in Anthem. Sadly, you'll have to abandon your dreams of power suit dog fights.
  • No friendly fire. For now anyway. The team might change their mind by launch.
  • The Scars aren't technically alien, but they're not exactly human either.
  • You'll be able to upgrade Javelin's flight time if you want to explore further and faster.
  • You can't change your Javelin mid-mission. We imagine this means that if you run out of charge on the Javelin you've chosen for a particular mission, you'll fail.
  • Javelins cannot be permanently destroyed. Whew.
  • No post-launch plans yet, but Darrah isn't opposed to the possibility of a melee-based Javelin or implementing interchangeable melee weapons for the four current Javelins.
  • Anthem will feature a color-blind mode.
  • You can respec your Freelancer's skills.
  • No plans for cross-play between console and PC at launch.
  • Missions are specifically designed for four players, even if Anthem can be played one to four.
  • There is fall damage so be careful when landing.
  • All Javelins have the same movement speed outside of combat.
  • Each Javelin is unlocked by doing a mission; players can choose the order.

Darrah and his team are continuing to answer questions about Anthem up to the game's release. They won't answer anything that might spoil the game, so feel free to ask away if you have any nagging questions. Anthem will launch on February 22 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

I'm hoping and betting on a total monetization wallet-rape sh-tshow and massive backlash. Plus, it boggles the mind why they would create something that does actually look like it could be really really cool, but then not give it any single-player or a deep and engaging story...just MP missions. There's alot about this game and its development I kind of find clueless and have to scratch my head over. I like MP, both co-op and pvp, but I'm sensing what seems to be an industry shift towards focus on MP-only games, with no SP component...perhaps because they believe competition increases the urge to spend to compete...and I'm not liking it.

@esqueejy: "not give it any single-player or a deep and engaging story"

I'm not a fan of EA, but it sounds like you have played it already, which is unlikely.

Let's wait and see, shall we?

I just want a game like the old FFXI used to be as far as gear is concerned. Of course we live in a different climate now where you don't want to much grind but enough for the hardcore, I just want some gear that's actually rare in the game. I remember having to camp a monster in FFXI or go on an epic journey that took long as hell to get the items to make that piece, I want something like that not sure how you balance to long with long enough.

Issue here, it's not about how good the game is for me at this point. I already dropped quite a few hours into warframe and that is a great game. In addition, It's free to play, monetization is fair, every content update is free, I can trust the devs will not eventually ditch it for a sequel and there is a good story to boot. On the other side Anthem will most probably ask me for a hefty admission fee, and regardless of what EA claims, the game is bound to screw us over in the long run. And that's not even the end of it, Bioware is nowhere near the company she used to be and to top it all off, theres already games like that out there, So I already got plenty other options if I want that itch scratched, and anthem is not a game I want to see from bioware.

@PETERAKO: Warframe is fun but the main story is barely ok. I hope Bioware can do better.

@nibbin1191: If CDPR new IP was a multiplayer always online game, they would have to convince a lot of people despite their good credit.

@nibbin1191:

All good points except that I would like to add some further points. It has been well documented that Anthem was going to be Bioware/EA number one title going forward . And even though Andromeda was being developed at the same time as Anthem it was not afforded the same respect in its development. Since Bioware/EA was essentially decided to place all of their eggs in one basket with Anthem making it their single focus. Andromeda and SWTOR took a back seat to it and had their resources taken from them and placed in the Anthem . And as a result both SWTOR and Anthem suffered from a lack of focus and direction.

The problem I have with Anthem is that it isn't the type of game I would care to play because I don't play Destiny or Warframe. The biggest problem I see for Bioware that they have to try to convince their core fans to just forgive and forget that they failed them at the titles that they wanted to play and to simply give Anthem a chance. Because the core fans of Bioware know that Anthem was not made with them in mind.

@nibbin1191: If CDPR were to announce an online game, I would certainly be on board. And I hate multiplayer games, and other people in general. Not fox people, mind you. ??

@nibbin1191: To top it all off they are releasing it on the same day as Days Gone, Crackdown 3 and Metro Exodus. While the division 2 is coming out a week or so after that plus there will probably be more games coming out in the February/March window.

@gamingdevil800: Very different target audiences though. Days gone is TPP action rpg SP PS4 exclusive. Crackdown is SP TPP action shooter MS exclusive. Metro is an FPS survival shooter.

If I was EA, I would be more concerned with Division 2, although so far it looks very similar to Division 1, so maybe not too concerned.

@nibbin1191: Personally, I found Division too repetitive. And I know I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I liked the story part of Destiny 2 (before lackluster DLCs). It's just too bad Bungie wrote themselves into a corner with their lore. Guardians can't die - guardian is dead. Darkness is coming - there's no darkness. Rift is destroyed - rift is back... At this point I gave up on D2, and don't even have the game anymore.

If (and that's a big if) Bioware can build a consistent non-conflicting lore and draw a good story within that lore combined with a fun varied gameplay, then I'll be first in line to try it. Until then I'll hold my excitement and remain skeptical :) Ideally (ideally) if they can combine the best parts of Mass Effect 2 gameplay with storyline of original Mass Effect or perhaps Dragon Age, then they'll have a chance of success.

Too many ifs, I know...

@gamingdevil800: well, that's a bit too much of a generalization.

I mean, Last of us is a shooter and Call of duty is a shooter, but I doubt the two intersect much in terms of player base. :)

@gamingdevil800: It's true that Metro Exodus is the only potentially redeemable piece amongst those offerings, however, they all look spectacular by comparison to Anthem. So, at least BioWare's seemingly terminal effort shall get to serve a purpose for the competition.

EDIT: Modifications were made to increase solemnity and ominousness.

@gamingdevil800: I agree, these games are releasing to close together... mostly too close to it's competitor for the RPG Shooter genre The Division 2. I'm a little concerned about the lack of content shared and demo presence at E3 for Anthem. With the direction of the Division 2 and info they have shared so far, i'm more hyped for the Division 2, then Anthem by far. I really hope they release some info to hype up this game, as currently division 2>Anthem for my RPG shooter of the year, I gave up on Destiny... I just can't wait for the last expansion of that game to finally have the core features it should have. Anyways, wish BioWare the best and I hope it is a huge success!

No item trading? Of course not, then you wouldn't have to grind.

@Thanatos2k: A standard feature RPG games have is allowing to share/trade items and gear with your current during the dropped item or reward. They need to add this to more games IMO.

Why do people compare this to Destiny? 4 player pve, a hub with no other players, mission style gameplay - it's Division all over again.

Looks like solo play is not a good option and group play is the way to go with this game. I'm out and will not be purchasing.

DO NOT trust Bioware. They are not the same company you fell in love with all those years ago.

They are soulless, corporate and greedy. DO NOT trust Bioware.

So this is going to be like Destiny, as in 'technically you can play it alone, but actually you can't get anything done without a party'? Bummer. I was actually hoping to play this one.

The game looks great and I think there is a lot we don’t know yet like the full fledged campaign they mentioned. I would still rather have dragon age 4 but this doesn’t seem bad at all. It seems like a 3rd person Diablo like game.

@fox_fury: I was thinking the loot and progression system seems similar to the things i like in Destiny 1. I.e. the loot scales to your level and javelin type so it is always useful / you are always happy to get it.

But it sounds like there COULD be big changes in other areas. I am especially intrigued with the equipment rewards for exploration. In destiny i hard;y ever care about exploring off the beaten objective, except to gather a little resource node here or there. If they are able to get a similar feel to God of War, in that exploring the environments were so fun and rewarding, it would make the world more important. Something I sorely missed in Destiny.
