E3 2018: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Has Branching Dialogue Choices

Shape your own path through Ancient Greece.

Ubisoft unveiled the next entry in its long-running stealth-action franchise at E3 2018 with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which takes players back to Ancient Greece where Spartans and Athenians are at war. One of the more notable changes this time around: branching dialogue choices. Odyssey is leaning heavily into RPG elements by giving players an active role in conversations that can change the course of the campaign.

Ubisoft demonstrated an example of the game's branching dialogue system in a gameplay demo showcased during its E3 2018 press conference. This time, you can choose to play as either a male or female character. During the course of the game, you'll be presented with dialogue options when speaking with characters, and your choices will alter the story, from making or rejecting alliances to developing romances.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Gameplay - Here's How Conversations Work - E3 2018

Assassin's Creed Odyssey takes place during the Peloponnesian War and stars Alexios or Kassandra, Spartan outcasts who have become mercenaries. Using a relic called the Spear of Leonidas, you'll be able to unlock "seemingly supernatural" combat abilities as they journey through Ancient Greece. You'll also come across a number of historical figures, including Socrates and Hippocrates.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC later this year, on October 5. It will launch in multiple editions; those who purchase either the Gold or Ultimate editions will be able to play the game several days early, on October 2. It would be great if these conversations could alter the course of the game but I can't see it. I imagine it will be akin to Telltale conversation choices which just lead to the same outcome whatever you choose.

It seems that AC is back to it's usual formula of yearly releases as well which I am not sure is a good thing. As much as I enjoyed Origins I am not looking to repeat 100 hours of the same game albeit in a different era and/or locality. Ubisoft didn't really learn from their mistakes with this IP, they merely took a year off to alter the formula of the game before recommencing the barrage once again.

@gamingdevil800: I wasn't sucking up to anyone, merely giving some advice to someone who thinks that a) he's funny, b) taking the rise out out of someone is acceptable and c) constant slating of others with blasphemy attached is acceptable on a website which is for adults and children alike. I kiss ass for no-one. ?

@kstaggs3: You have problems. I have no idea what those problems are but I suggest you either talk to VG Ninja via PM (he's an approachable guy) or, if he really bothers you that much then you can block any user by visiting their profile page. Don't go around making fun of people for the sake of it though, it just looks bad on you ultimately.

@gotrekfabian: actually not in the slightest. You’re the one blowing this WAAAAAAY out of proportion. Calm down, it’s ok. I’m sure Video Game Ninja can take a damn joke.

@kstaggs3: Me? Go and read my comment again without the anger and let's see who's really aggro. I was giving a bit of kindly advice and, to use your expression, you go and blow it out of proportion.

Just for the record, your idea of a joke really isn't funny either it is derisory and pitiful quite frankly.

@kstaggs3: And how about you stop with the name calling and imbecility which is against GameSpot's ToU? If you put negativity out there then it will inevitably come back to you. I even put up some positive advice and you still turned it into a negative. I'm no SJW but remember that there are minors who use the site and they should not be subjected to the kind of posts you proffer.
