Ubisoft CEO Explains The Wait For A New Splinter Cell Game

Yves Guillemot explains why it's taken so long.

It has been more than five years since the release of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, so fans are understandably eager to find out what's next for Sam Fisher. In a new interview, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot offered an explanation for what's taking so long to bring the franchise back.

He told IGN that Ubisoft won't bring back the franchise until it can do something novel with it. Not only that, but some of Ubisoft's development teams became too anxious to want to work on a new Splinter Cell game due to pressure from fans, Guillemot said. And third, Ubisoft's other big franchises like Assassin's Creed are "taking off," which has led the company to focus on them instead of Splinter Cell.

Now Playing: New Splinter Cell Game: Why Is It Taking So Long? - GS News Update

"When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before," Guillemot said. "Last time we did a Splinter Cell, we had lots of pressure from all the fans saying, 'Don't change it; don't do this; don't do that.' So some of the teams were more anxious to work on the brand.

"Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the brand; taking care of the brand. At one point you will see something but I can't say more than that," he added. "Also because of Assassin's Creed and all the other brands taking off, people wanted to work on those brands more. so we have to follow what they like to do."

Ghost Recon: Wildlands contained a very strong tease for Splinter Cell, with Sam Fisher voice actor Michael Ironside doing the voice in an Easter Egg. A Splinter Cell Easter Egg was also spotted in Ubisoft's 2019 game Far Cry: New Dawn.

Further fuelling the rumors about a new Splinter Cell is the news that original Splinter Cell designer Clint Hocking has returned to Ubisoft where he is working on "unannounced projects." Guillemot was asked if Ubisoft might bring back Splinter Cell for the next generation of consoles, which are apparently coming soon, but Guillemot wouldn't be drawn into that conversation.

If Ubisoft does have a Splinter Cell announcement to make, it could happen during the company's E3 2019 briefing in June, but nothing is confirmed at this stage.

Back in 2012 it was reported that Tom Hardy would star as Sam Fisher in a Splinter Cell movie, but whether or not that's still the case is unknown.

Nice way to blame the fanbase for no new Splinter Cell games. The real reason is because you want to monetize the shit out of it and can't find a way to make it fit properly.

You know that the fanbase wants a traditional Splinter Cell like Chaos Theory but you don't want to make that because it can't be manipulated. The same reason you all refuse to remaster the original trilogy.

Piss off.

Applause to gamers. You wanted Assassin's Creed 20 and Watch Dogs 10. Ubisoft will keep rehashing them. It's same like loot boxes and micro transactions. Gamers themselves to be blamed

Funny how he says “When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before," Guillemot said.

Yet a lot of their games are re-skins of their previous games.

The 1st real clue to a new Splinter Cell game will be when the "Splinter Cell Collection : Remastered" get released.

While I believe there's room for both action and stealth, if they want to lean into a more action-oriented and/or open world model, they probably shouldn't call the game Splinter Cell. I'm probably one of the few people who somewhat enjoyed Blacklist, but I don't consider it a Splinter Cell game. Honestly, they should've just called it Tom Clancy's Blacklist and made the protagonist John Clark - and not just because having someone other than Michael Ironside voicing Fisher was blasphemy.

I'd love a Splinter Cell game that just went back to its roots. Don't want to see a Wildlands version of Splinter Cell.

Yeah, gotta make on when the times right. Don't want another Conviction.

Still, Michael Ironside ain't getting any younger. And boy Dishonored sure was a manual on how to build a great stealth game.

@cejay0813: Now that you mention it though, a John Wick game would be badass if they did it right. Which they wouldn’t, but if they did...

Maybe style it like the new God of War. I can kind of picture a closer camera like that, with tight gunplay, and then badass close-quarters Gun-Fu.

Am I the only Ubisoft fan here? I loved the original Splinter Cell to bits, and it was my main reason to buy an Xbox. I have also really enjoyed some of the Assassin's Creed games, and all of the Far Cry games (except Primal). I have never spent a coin on in-game-purchases.

I think Mr Guillemot has a point by waiting with a new Splinter Cell release. I feel that the Assassin's Creed franchise has been overflooded in recent years with a new game almost every year. The franchise should follow the example of Splinter Cell.

@pmanden: Pretty sure we are all Splinter Cell fans here. Just not much faith in Ubisoft itself, several comments here are nearly copy-pastes expecting them to turn it into some generic open-world game with outposts, grind and a barrel of microtransactions and/or games as a service.

@pmanden: I think the closest they are able to get to making a new Splinter Cell game is what Blacklist was. While I enjoyed it, I don't think they have the ability to create a true Splinter Cell sequel akin to the first few anymore.

That said, a refined version of Blacklist would be awesome.

Sadly, I don't think I want the current Ubisoft to make another Splinter Cell. I have no faith in the company whatsoever these days.

Splinter Cell was a niche game, and Ubisoft no longer makes niche games.

Thing is, Ubisoft doesn't care about solid stealth or tactical single player games anymore; it's too niche to monetize from. It's the reason why the latest Tom Clancy games have been streamlined or dynamically changed to appeal a bigger (casual) market. I have no desire playing a Splinter Cell game with an open-world design, huge activity checklist and a poor narrative.

Chaos Theory is my favorite stealth game of all time, but a game similar to that will just be completely unfulfilling for Ubisoft. Even something like Blacklist, a game I thought already streamlined too much, would be undesirable today for Ubisoft's standards.

@cboye18: It is sad, I enjoyed Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, also GRAW 1 and 2, and Ghost Recon Future Soldier was still pretty good. I remember when Splinter Cell 1 launched on the OXbox, the quality in that game, the lighting, the shadows, everything was top notch. The stealth mechanics were second to none.

Unfortunately with the explosion of Online Multiplayer last gen, which was great when it wasn't the central focus, has started putting the nails in the coffin of great single player games. Games with intensely designed single player linear levels are more expensive and simply don't have the same draw they did even 8 years ago. You used to be able to master levels, find multiple ways to take down enemies and become super efficient. Now with Open World games, there just isn't the same intricacy.

I diverse game design is great, Platforming, FPS, TPS, open world, linear, multiplayer, strategy and what not. Now as technology expands, it feels like the type of games we are getting is more and more similar.

-"When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before," – Guillemot

This is not only a good thing to hear but is refreshing when one considers the amount of re-hashed titles that seemingly get little in their subsequent installments other than a mild graphical upgrade. Whether Ubisoft sticks to what they say may be a different thing altogether (especially looking at some of their other franchises.) but let's give them the benefit of the doubt.

Hopefully this is a good sign that the next Splinter Cell will improve upon the formula fans have already come to love. Capcom has already proved with titles like DMC 5 that re-inventing the wheel isn’t necessary but adding just enough to make whatever new installment stand out when done properly is more than adequate.

@videogameninja: It's pretty hard to take this statement, when just a few years ago their whole mantra seemed to be "We want to combine all our games into one", which lead to UI's, tower challenges etc. being in every game. Have they really changed their mind, and why?

Then again, I'd love if they made games like the original Splinter Cell's. The 4 first games (Xbox/PS2 DA) were damn near identical but so damn fun. There was no other game much like it. Conviction turned into a third person shooter. At times it felt like Kane & Lynch with very basic on/off stealth.

I'm not holding my breath.

Ubisoft and "Novel" , naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah , they didn't innovate in any of their games like at all , all the change they did was convert from AC from a stealthy game to a " HZD , Witcher " mash up and added their Division / Ghost Recon Drones to it aka " Eagle "

Well, yeah. You guys stripped away many of the stealth elements that made the series a success in the first place. I don't mind you making Sam more action capable but you don't have to abandon what many people loved about the original games.

Give us the ultra slow movement, environmental stealth mechanics, and more gadgets. Lean into that instead of just evolving it into another generic cover based shooter.

@eli150: Go play Chaos Theory for a bit and then put in one of the newer games like Blacklist and you'll see what I mean on slow speed. You could creep forward inch by inch in the old games and in the new games your slowest speed is a brisk crouch walk.

For me, the movement in the older games was a big part of the immersion. The movement and general game mechanics in Blacklist annoyed me. It didn't feel like proper Splinter Cell to me. It felt like it was always pushing me to move faster and play more action oiriented.

I fell in love with the ultra methodical slow stealth of the original games and I feel like they've abandoned that to some degree.

I don't mind them making Sam more action capable if that's how someone wants to play but I'd appreciate it if I could still have the mechanics that made the originals so great.

I think MGSV is a pretty good example of how you can have both play styles available and make them enjoyable for different players.

Best excuse ever from a Ubisoft employee. Although he does have a point that the fans suck. If they change anything, everyone is like "OMG boycott!!!!11!" If they keep it the same, then everyone is like "Ubi's releases are similar each year, making them twice as bad as Hitler and almost as bad as EA. Also, insert racist or sexist comment here."
