Sony Won’t Put Its New First-Party Games On A Subscription Service Because It’s Not ‘Sustainable’

Sony has said that the company doesn’t plan to bring its new first-party games to a Game Pass-like subscription service because it wouldn’t be “sustainable.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan broke the news in an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz. The interview noted the surprising reveal of the PlayStation Plus Collection during the PS5 conference, which will bring a library of the PS4’s best games to the console, available to PlayStation Plus subscribers for free.

In light of this news, Ryan was asked whether PlayStation might follow Microsoft’s lead in bringing all of its future first-party games to a subscription service upon the day of release.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/ps5-release-date-trailer”]

“For us, having a catalogue of games is not something that defines a platform,” Ryan told GamesIndustry.Biz. “Our pitch, as you’ve heard, is ‘new games, great games.’ We have had this conversation before — we are not going to go down the road of putting new releases titles into a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, well over $100 million, to develop. We just don’t see that as sustainable.”

Ryan added that Sony’s ambition is to make games “bigger and better, and hopefully at some stage more persistent.” A day-one first-party subscription model like Game Pass wouldn’t suit that ambition for PlayStation. “We want to expand and grow our existing ecosystem, and putting new games into a subscription model just doesn’t sit with that.”

In other PS5 news, Ryan recently told Famitsu that the PS5 won’t be backwards compatible with PS3, PS2 or PS1 games. You can also check out our list of all the PlayStation 5 launch games to prepare you for the console’s November release.

Deals: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Back in Stock, RTX 3080 Gaming PCs Are Available

Yesterday was bittersweet. The PS5 console and RTX 3080 video card both went up for order, and both sold out nearly instantly. As of now, it’s pretty much impossible to find a PS5 from an authorized reseller. For those lucky souls who did score, the PS5 accessories including the DualSense controller are still available on Amazon. For those looking for the RTX 3080 video card, we’ve only seen a single vendor that has anything in stock (and unfortunately you’ll have to pay over MSRP). However, there are gaming PC rigs featuring the RTX 3080 video card that are still available.

New Pokemon Sword And Shield Event Now Live, And It Features Another Shiny Pokemon

A new Max Raid event has begun in Pokemon Sword and Shield. To commemorate the seasonal equinox, Pokemon that evolve via Sun or Moon Stones are appearing more frequently in Max Raid dens across the Wild Area and Isle of Armor, and you’ll have a chance to encounter Shiny Clefable in the Raids. You’ll need to act fast, however, as the event only runs through this weekend.

Until September 20, 4:59 PM PT / 7:59 PM ET, the following Pokemon will be featured in Max Raid battles across both Sword and Shield:

  • Clefable
  • Wigglytuff
  • Musharna
  • Bellossom
  • Whimsicott
  • Lilligant

As previously mentioned, you’ll also have a chance to encounter a Shiny Clefable in five-star Raids. In order for the event Pokemon to begin appearing in your game, you’ll first need to refresh your Raid dens. You can do this either by connecting the Y-Comm online or going into Mystery Gift from the menu screen and selecting Get the Wild Area News.

Once the equinox event ends, Pokemon Sword and Shield’s other Max Raid event will resume. That one runs until September 30 and features certain Grass and Electric Pokemon, including Ferrothorn, Eldegoss, Heliolisk, Boltund, and their pre-evolved forms. Pokemon Sword players can also encounter Gigantamax versions of Appletun and Low Key Form Toxtricity, while Shield players will be more likely to find Gigantamax Flapple and Amped Form Toxtricity.

Beyond that, Pokemon Sword and Shield’s second expansion, The Crown Tundra, is still on the way. While the DLC does not yet have a release date, it is slated to launch this fall, and it will take players to a new arctic region where they’ll encounter new and returning Legendary Pokemon and be able to explore Raid dens. The Pokemon Company recently shared a brief new trailer for The Crown Tundra that highlighted some of the returning Legendaries. You can read more about the upcoming expansion in our roundup of everything we know about Pokemon Sword and Shield’s DLC.

Young Justice: Phantoms – What Does the Season 4 Title Mean?

The return of Young Justice was one of DC Universe’s most resounding successes. Subtitled Outsiders, the revival of the fan-favorite animated series for a third season meant DC’s most famous sidekicks and legacy characters were finally back in action after an almost seven-year gap. And now news of the show’s fourth season emerged during DC FanDome Part 2, specifically that it will be subtitled Phantoms.

Although there wasn’t much new information revealed about the upcoming season beyond that title, thanks to the new moniker we can have some fun playing around with just what Phantoms could mean… especially as the subtitle Outsiders had a huge role in the third season. There’s no word yet on Young Justice: Phantom’s release date, but we’re going to dive into some of our favorite theories here, from the most likely to the most ridiculous! But be warned: Spoilers for Young Justice Seasons 1-3 follow!

young-justice-phantoms

Rogue Operatives

Let’s start with the least outrageous of the options. Though Phantoms could be a direct reference to the comics–we’ll get into those potential routes a little later–it seems more likely that the title will be referencing a new status quo. The establishment of the Outsiders already touched on the need for different teams for different purposes, and the world of Young Justice is filled with some of DC’s biggest teams from the Justice League to the Doom Patrol all the way to the Suicide Squad. And speaking of that black ops team, they could be a framework for what comes next, especially when we look at who would need Young Justice to work in secret (as the word Phantoms would seem to imply).

After taking down a Meta-Human trafficking ring, the Young Justice team has built up an impressive army of enemies. And now, with Brion, a.k.a. Geo-Force, under the control of supervillain team The Light, it would be easy for Young Justice to be compromised. Being framed for a crime you didn’t commit is an age-old comic book trope, and it would set the team up for a conflict as they clear their own names and work as ghosts in the system.

There’s also another option, which is that Amanda Waller needs their help and pushes them underground in order to gain it. Tonally, either plot works in favor of Young Justice’s grounded and complex approach to superhero storytelling.

young-justice

Ghosts From the Past

Young Justice has long been lauded for its complex narrative arcs and emotional heart, so the other most obvious choice for what Phantoms could mean would be a threat from the past. The roster of heroes is so huge in Young Justice that there are plenty of backstories to draw from to find enemies hiding in the shadows. And with Artemis (Stephanie Lemelin) inviting Arsenal to rejoin the team during the virtual table read that took place at FanDome (of a new “episode”), there’s at least one other person from the past whose shadow looms large over Dick Grayson and co. that jumps straight to mind.

During the second season of Young Justice it was revealed that Jason Todd had died under unknown circumstances at some point in the past. As any DC fan knows, that is never truly the case when it comes to Jason. During the first half of Outsiders when the team was infiltrating Infinity Island, they came across a red-hooded ninja who moaned, “Grayson.” The implication was, of course, that the ninja was actually Jason Todd, his garments a nod to his post-Robin mantle (in the comics) of Red Hood. Though we didn’t discover his fate last season, it would make sense he might come into play in Phantoms.

Jason’s death has always weighed heavily on Dick. Seeing as the ex-Robin was thought to be dead, he would be a very literal representation of the new subtitle. And if Red Hood does become a threat, it seems like it won’t be as a new criminal mastermind but as some kind of Ra’s al Ghul reanimated version of himself. Could that mean the Phantoms in question might be an army of the heroes’ late loved ones revived to hunt them down and terrorize them? It would be a dark route to take but would play into one of DC Comics’ favorite plotlines and recurring characters.

Phantom Girl

The final moments of Young Justice: Outsiders saw one of the most interesting and fun DC Easter eggs an old school fan could hope for. As the crew relaxes in a diner eating, laughing, and recuperating, they’re served by a blonde waitress wearing a Legion Flight Ring. The gold emblem is worn by the iconic DC team from the future known as the Legion of Superheroes. While that’s very exciting going into Season 4, no matter how it ultimately plays out, it’s of particular significance for our purposes here because one of the Legion team members is a Silver Age hero who goes by the moniker of… Phantom Girl!

Her first appearance in a 1961 issue of Action Comics leaned into the youthful team adventures that are usually connected with Young Justice. She headed to Earth along with other young cosmic heroines Triplicate Girl and Saturn Girl to befriend Supergirl. That’s not to say we’ll see that scenario exactly–though it would be fun–but more to highlight that she’s already got a history of hanging out with other young heroes. Seeing as the Legion is almost certainly going to play into Phantoms based on that ring reveal, it seems unlikely that Phantom Girl won’t be a part of that in some way. This could also possibly connect to the next entry as some say her home planet is a part of…

The Legion Flight Ring seen at the end of Young Justice Season 3.

The Phantom Zone

In Outsiders, the subtitle represented a new team which was well established in the wider DC Universe. There’s no team called Phantoms in DC, but there is of course the famed Phantom Zone, and the criminals who’ve lived within it who are known as the Phantom Zoners. Canonically, the intergalactic prison does exist within the world of Young Justice as it was part of how some Kryptonians survived after the destruction of Krypton, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to imagine it could come into play here.

From that online table read, which was set between Seasons 3 and 4, we know that Conner/Superboy (Nolan North) and M’gann/Miss Martian (Danica McKellar) are heading out on their own. Perhaps the partially-Kryptonian clone will come up against some inhabitants of the Phantom Zone? Both those alien characters have a history of dealing with the cosmic, so it would be an easy connection to make, especially as Conner has such a complex past. Maybe the Phantom Zoners are out for Superman’s blood and don’t realize his clone is just that, a clone? Or could M’gann and Conner end up in the Phantom Zone themselves? It would be a really interesting and exciting twist to see the Young Justice team have to head into the notoriously strange dimension to save their former teammates.

There’s precedent for this potential angle in the comics too. In the Injustice: Year Three series, a corrupted Superman tricks Conner and the Titans into the Phantom Zone in order to keep them from stopping his nefarious plans. Although we’re not likely to see a full exploration of the alternate Injustice timeline, DC Comics is really invested in that successful alt-universe franchise. This arc also featured some other core Young Justice characters like Bart and Gar, though both met a gnarly fate as they were killed by a nuclear blast that Conner couldn’t save them from.

The Phantom Stranger

This particular entry would make a lot of Young Justice fans happy as it’s connected to a character that many viewers want to see join the show. During DC’s line-wide New 52 relaunch, the Phantom Stranger debuted in an ongoing series with a story connected to one of the publisher’s most powerful and brilliant young heroes: Rachel Roth, a.k.a. Raven.

In classic Phantom Stranger fashion, the enigmatic turncoat secures Raven’s trust before betraying her to her father Trigon. DC loves to explore that demonic daddy, and neither he nor his daughter have appeared in Young Justice yet. We know that the series isn’t afraid of getting supernatural and strange, which opens the door to the Stranger. His stories often center around changing time, space, or fate, and with the Fourth World and Darkseid back in play there’s plenty at stake as we head into Season 4. Maybe Phantoms references this pulpy entry into DC canon and it could be a way of introducing one of the company’s most popular young heroes too.

Harley Quinn Gets A Season 3 As Animated Series Finds New Home

While the streaming service DC Universe is going through a vast transformation, moving away from TV and movies entirely, one of its breakout hits isn’t going away any time soon. The adult animated comedy Harley Quinn has been ordered for Season 3 on HBO Max.

The first two seasons of the former DC Universe show are already available on HBO Max, which is now the official home for the show. Going forward, it will be the only place to stream the show.

Back during DC FanDome, the cast and crew of the series had some ideas of where they would like the show to go in a new season. “We want to focus on Harley and Ivy’s relationship,” explained executive producer Justin Halpern during the Harley Quinn panel. “And I’m less, personally, interested in if the Joker gets a new girlfriend than I am of ‘let’s explore this relationship we’ve spent two seasons building.'”

At the end of Season 2–spoiler warning if you’re not caught up–Poison Ivy left Kite Man at the altar, then she and Harley had a war with Commissioner Gordon and the GCPD. Afterwards, Ivy admitted her feelings to Harley, and now, they’re a couple.

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco in the titular role, Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk as Clayface and the Joker, Ron Funches as King Shark, Tony Hale as Dr. Psycho, and Matt Oberg at Kite Man.

DC Universe Is Ending To Make Way For New Service With Pretty Much The Same Name

It’s a transformative day for the streaming service DC Universe. While it’s not going the way of other failed projects like Seeso–a comedy streaming service with undeniably great originals–DC Universe is headed into its cocoon to become something entirely different, focusing entirely on digital comic books.

Launching on January 21, 2021–then in the Summer of 2021 internationally–DC Universe will become DC Universe Infinite, a premium comic book service with access to more than 24,000 comics at launch. With DC Universe, comics appeared on the app one year after physical versions debuted in stores. Now, that window is cut to six months.

As for the DC Universe shows you know and love like Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Young Justice, Titans, and Stargirl, they’ll all be available on HBO Max. Additionally, it was revealed that Harley Quinn has been renewed for a third season. Other movies and TV shows currently on DC Universe will all be available for viewing now on HBO Max. DC Universe Infinite’s focus is on comics.

No Caption Provided

“Our fans love the platform’s robust library of comic books and, with the transformation, we will not disappoint,” said DC publisher and CCO Jim Lee. “I’m excited to share that not only will DC Universe Infinite members still be able to read all of the great comics that they’ve enjoyed but new issues are debuting on the platform quicker than before, digital first exclusives are being created, and the members-only events will begin as soon as possible. There has never been a better time to be a DC fan.”

In addition to access to comics a bit earlier, there will be “digital first” titles, original comics that will hit DC Universe Infinite first. Some of the titles planned have been listed, which you can check out below.

Digital first titles:

  • Aquaman: Deep Dives
  • Batman: Gotham Nights
  • DCeased: Hope at World’s End
  • Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red
  • Injustice: Year Zero, Shazam!: Lightning Strikes
  • Superman: Man of Tomorrow
  • Swamp Thing: New Roots
  • Wonder Woman 84

DC Universe Infinite will cost $8 a month or $75 annually. Current subscribers to DC Universe can upgrade their package to include HBO Max–which still isn’t available on Roku or Amazon devices–for an additional $5 with a limited time offer that’s available until October 30, 2020.

The Battle Between Roku And NBCUniversal Intensifies, As Channels Are Pulled

After a series of escalating disagreements between Comcast-owned NBCUniversal and Roku, the latter has issued an announcement that as soon as Friday night and sometime throughout the coming weekend, 11 national Comcast “TV Everywhere” channels, which are available to pay-TV subscribers, will be disappearing off streaming players.

In an announcement sent to all customers, a Roku spokesperson said, “Comcast is removing these channels in order to try to force Roku to distribute its new Peacock service on unreasonable terms… While these NBC TV Everywhere apps represent a very small number of streaming hours on our platform, we believe they are convenient to people who use them, especially when so many Americans are at home.”

The move seems to be a retaliation against well-documented disputes over NBCUniversal’s Peacock and sharing of ad inventory–rights to resell services in channel stores and free content for an ad-supported platform–with Roku. An NBCU rep told Variety that “Roku’s unreasonable demands ultimately hurt both their consumers and their consumer equipment partners to whom they’ve promised access to all apps in the marketplace.”

Use These Tips to Increase Your PS5 Preorder Chances

The PS5 preorders have been happening since Walmart opened the floodgates a few hours after the PS5 Showcase event gave us the price and release date.

Since then, PS5 preorders at GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon and more have come and gone in a flash. Walmart offered another chance to snag a PS5 or PS5 Digital preorder at 9 PM ET on September 17, and the entire restock was claimed in just 2 minutes.

It looks pretty daunting if you haven’t yet secured your PS5 preorder, but fret not! There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for the next retailer restock, should there be one. I’ve put together this little guide to help maximize your chances of securing that precious, precious PS5.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting a PS5 Preorder

Create Accounts at Retailers

The problem with PS5 preorders is they sell out in mere minutes, sometimes seconds. Lots of people following the IGNDeals Twitter account said by the time they got to the checkout with their PS5, it was already sold out. You can save yourself a few precious seconds by signing up for an account ahead of time with retailers.

Signing up for an account is free at pretty much all the places carrying the PS5, and it saves you from having to enter in your address, credit card, billing address and whatever else they require during the frantic checkout process. You just log in, hit “Check Out,” and you’re off to the races.

Note: make sure you’re logged in before the preorders go up. I ran into a snag trying to log-in to my Walmart account when they first went up on Wednesday, due to the massive traffic influx.

Here are the retailers with (possible) PS5 preorders with free account sign-ups:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/ps5-release-date-trailer”]

Make Sure You Have the Cash In Your Account to Cover It

Amazon is pretty famous for its policy of not charging your account until the item ships. This means you can easily claim a preorder on just about anything even if you don’t have the money at your disposal. I don’t recommend using Amazon preordering as a modern layaway program, but lots of people preorder there simply because it gives them some extra time to beef up their bank accounts.

However, other places like Walmart and Best Buy DO charge you when you make the purchase. Or at least, they put a hold on the full amount for a few days before releasing it, only to charge the full amount when the item ships. That means if you don’t have the cash in your account, or don’t have a credit card, you won’t be able to secure your PS5 preorder.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/29/ps5-the-future-of-gaming-trailer”]

Don’t Hold Out for the PS5 Digital (If Possible)

This one sounds weird, but you have to trust me on this. Looking at our own data, and data from other sources like CheapyD on Twitter, there just aren’t many PS5 Digital consoles available for purchase. In the CheapyD tweet, you can see only 0.2% of orders came through for the Digital edition. In our poll (which you can see further down,) of the of respondents who did score a preorder, only 1/6th landed the digital. It’s not because the $499 PS5 is that much more popular: it’s just the PS5 Digital is so incredibly limited in available stock.

[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=…the%20PS5%20Digital%20is%20so%20incredibly%20limited%20in%20its%20available%20preorder%20stock.”]

Based purely on anecdotal evidence and reading peoples’ replies on the IGNDeals Twitter, the Digital version is the one console people want most of all. But if you can swing the extra $100, and you absolutely want to bring home a PS5 this November, my advice is don’t even waste your time trying to preorder the digital version.

This is probably my most controversial piece of PS5 preorder advice, so if you feel lucky, by all means go for that Digital! Just know, from the data we can see, it looks like it’s a long-shot.

Follow IGNDeals on Twitter

If you aren’t already, you can join the almost 30,000 new people who’ve followed the IGNDeals Twitter since Wednesday. It seems like people are pretty hungry for PS5 alerts. You can also bookmark our PS5 preorder page, which is updated as soon as new PS5 preorders become available.

Since I’m trying to look out for your best interests, after you follow IGNDeals, maybe follow @Wario64 and @videogamedeals to maximize your chances of seeing an in-stock PS5 preorder alert.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=every-game-and-announcement-featured-in-the-playstation-5-showcase-event&captions=true”]

Prepare to be Disappointed

After you’ve hunkered down and prepared for another wave of PS5 preorders, my last bit of advice is to work on accepting the fact you might not see one in the wild. However, the good news is Sony said there will be more PS5s at launch than there were PS4 consoles during its launch. That gives you a better shot of picking one up on PS5 launch day, November 12. Walmart has already said it will have them in its stores on launch, ready for your excited hands, rather than do an in-store preorder event.

[poilib element=”poll” parameters=”id=0b8b1f86-da52-4fef-b0a7-2729ca596785″]

We don’t know when PS5 preorders will go online again. We don’t even know IF we’ll see more availability. Amazon never even officially posted PS5 preorders (there was a working back-end link that has since been taken down), and Best Buy was plagued with troubles. Walmart offered a second round yesterday, and Sam’s Club also came out of left field with a preorder window.

Keep watching Twitter and hoping for the best, but prepare yourself for the very real possibility you may be standing in line on November 12.

PS5 Galaxy Exploring Game Jett: The Far Shore Delayed To 2021

Developer Superbrothers has announced that Jett: The Far Shore has been delayed to 2021. Revealed at Sony’s June PlayStation Showcase that also officially unveiled the PS5 console, Jett was also due to release simultaneously on PS4 and on PC via the Epic Games Store this year. In a statement, the studio explained that the delay came from wanting to increase the quality of the game and look after the wellbeing of its staff.

“As of now it seems we’re in need of more time in order for Jett to soar, and for the squad to complete this interstellar trip in good condition,” Superbrothers said. “Jett: The Far Shore is now fixing to deploy in 2021 on PlayStation consoles and PC on the Epic Games Store. Hectic times, so we’ve revised our trajectory. It’ll be stellar, when it alights.”

Aside from the June reveal trailer, details on the new Superbrothers game have been sparse so far. What was shown in the first trailer was a journey into outer space that spans multiple centuries as humanity makes its way to an alien planet in search of a new home.

According to Superbrothers, players will guide an explorer by the name of Mei as she scouts a new planet alongside her co-pilot Isao and investigates an interstellar transmission known as the hymnwave that sits at the heart of a cosmic mystery.

“We’ve had a strong focus on audio and haptics since we carved out Jett’s concept, so of course we’re thrilled about the new Dualsense controller,” Superbrother’s said of the PS5’s hardware. “As for what the PS5 uniquely offers in terms of 3D audio processing: it’s revelatory, and it’s a great fit for Jett. This may sound silly, but with the PS5 it’s as if you really have ears in a videogame for the first time. There is suddenly an unprecedented fidelity available for perceiving audio spaces.”

While Jett: The Far Shore won’t arrive in time for the launch of the PS5 console, other games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, and several other backward compatible PS4 games will still allow for a healthy catalog to dip into on November 12. For information on where you can purchase the new Sony console, you can check out our PS5 preorder guide.
