Making Skyblivion: Bringing Oblivion To Skyrim

Skyblivion is a fan-made project to re-create The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim's engine. I sat down with the project lead to discuss the personal cost of making a mod of this scale.

Skyblivion is a fan-made mod designed to recreate The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion within the engine for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In the video above, Jake Dekker sits down with Skyblivion project lead Kyle Rebel to discuss the development process behind the mod, as well as the personal cost such a large-scale project has had on the people behind it.

Rebel notes that Skyblivion isn't a direct recreation of Oblivion within Skyrim. Alongside visual improvements, Skyblivion makes several tweaks to Oblivion's setting to flesh out the lore and world-building. For example, several of the green trees outside of a necromancer-ruled ruin have been replaced with dead ones to reflect the connection that the area has to death and decay. In an effort to ensure time spent on Skyblivion feels like an optional creative outlet as opposed to necessary work, everyone involved is an unpaid volunteer, with Rebel only seeking the bare minimum in monetary help from the community on rare occasions--such as paying for server fees.

The work hasn't been without personal cost though, and Rebel remarks that the negative aspects tied to working on something connected to the internet, such as anonymous hate speech, have been trying. In some cases, he's had to cut ties with the project completely and simply walk away from it for a while. Yet, despite these setbacks, he remains steadfast in finishing Skyblivion.

Rebel and his team release updates on the status of Skyblivion on Twitter and YouTube. The team is also accepting volunteers if you're interested in helping out with the project.

For more on mod development, watch Jake's investigation into the making of Fallout Miami and Fallout Cascadia. Both Miami and Cascadia are built within Fallout 4. Fallout Miami takes place during the same timeframe as Fallout 4's story, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who live in one of the few major US cities that wasn't hit by a nuke during the apocalypse. Fallout Cascadia's story occurs years later, taking place in Seattle on an in-game map that's roughly twice the size of Fallout 4. Despite being built within the same game, the creation process behind both mods has been very different.

the best thing to do is to forget about this mod and just be surprised in a few years when you hear its out.

"anonymous hate speech" Who the F does this? Some people may have become adults in body, but in mind they are nothing and will be nothing but immature brats.

Seems like Skyblivion has been going on so long that even the Skyrim engine is starting to show its age. Any idea on when Skyblivion will see an official release?

Never played Oblivion (nor any other of the Elder Scrolls, actually), but this type of content keeps me returning to Gamespot. Keep it up, Jake!

Bravo! Looks phenomenal and such a good attitude. I'd happily pay $60 for this all over again. I loved Oblivion and got all the achievements on 360. To this day, it's on my Xbox One X, just for nostalgia. My favorite of the Elder Scrolls with Morrowind 2nd. Can't wait till this is done!

Skyrim was simple, Oblivion wasn't. Not that Skyrim was bad, I had just as much fun playing it as I did Oblivion. Also, who the heck is hating on this guy and why? You gotta be a completer (censored) to do so.

What bloody waste of time, Oblivion was terrible, Finished the game 100% without leveling up once.

I more worthy game for this upgrade would be M&M 6 or 7. Now that would be amazing.

Bethesda: we're too incompetent to make an Elder Scrolls game in 8 years.

Fans: fine I'll do it myself.

@wetro: Yes I realize that, it was a joke. Enderal is probably the best example of new ES content modded on Skyrim.

Need to replay Oblivion (with mods, of course). I did enjoy that game a lot. Might have been my first or second open-world game, too (GTA 3 was first I think).

I am totally in favor of remakes of old games, though; not remasters, mind you, that is lazy cash-ins imo; but an honest-to-god remake, maybe with some changes in the vision of the recreators.

is there a mod for elsweyr, black marsh, high rock or the others? because those are really the needed ones

its now safe to assume tesvi will be total shit, bethesda has lost it. tesvi and re8 were the only games left on my to watch list but bethesda has simply changed their view of the world so much it will never work.

i have no problem still playing the original oblivion, but i feel those older regions will never get a worhty game. thankfully while oblivion had a lot of irritating stuff, skyrim is such a good base that if some people managed to add whole tamriel into it i could play it for the rest of my life.

... and yes, that would be worth 200gbs of my hard drive. and pshhh... *i would pay a lot of money*

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Play Elder Scrolls Online then. It's a hundred times better now than a few years ago. It looks amazing and it can easily be played solo. Unlike most mmorpgs, you can go to a brand new area and find quests no matter what your level is. Sometimes the environment even changes around you based on your actions. Summerset expansion was great and they just released Elsweyr.

I really admire this effort. That being said, the new coat of paint isn't that useful to me. Skyrim's engine is pretty dated, and although it's better than Oblivion's graphics in various aspects I honestly don't see that this will add much to my experience. Both Skyrim and Oblivion look "old but ok" now. Morrowind is much more in need of a new coat of paint (and maybe that project will be done someday)

@xantufrog: Dated or not, Skyrim still plays well even with vanilla textures, and it's from 2012..even if this comes out in 2021 it's of no consequence, it'll be good.

@eldrach: right, but this is mostly a visual improvement mod. And I consider Oblivion a superior RPG, so unless they recreate the deeper magic and factions this could even be a downgrade from a role playing perspective. They have, in fact, stated they cannot promise this (but will try). Skyrim was a big disappointment to me, and updating dated graphics to still dated graphics while losing part of what made Oblivion special is not that useful to me.

If you like Skyrim and still think Skyrim is fun to play, that's great. I'm not here to fight with Skyrim fans.

@xantufrog: True. Factions needs to be implemented as in the original oblivion. But i'm also quite sure they cannot work magic with the ui/magic system, it'll be akin to skyrim there. I'm also not a fan of the "equip a spell in one hand" system that skyrim uses, but there is a way around it. They can replace the shout mechanic with spellcast like in Oblivion, that can make up for the engine limitations

@xantufrog: Agreed. Already people are getting hyped for TES5. If Skyblivion is released after TES5, I'm not sure how many people are going to drop TES5 to reinstall Skyrim to play Oblivion.

@xantufrog:

I'm with you on that... it's Morrowind that needed this... especially if they were able to recreate it's superior RPG mechanics.

But honestly doing all this work for free is something that Bethesda products no longer deserve from it's community...

Listening to him talk throughout the interview and the answers he gave...yeah, sorry, but this mod will never be finished.

And even IF his group ever gets the mod done, Skyblivion will be such an outdated game, we'll all have moved on to the next gaming generation.

I'd much rather see mods for new games out of The Witcher 3's engine. Can someone get on that, please?

@neurogia: There's simply no way this mod isn't getting done, if you understood how much work we've put into it you'd know that it's too much to walk away from and those who want this will wait for it patiently.

They've come -really- -really- far. This mod will be finished, and it'll be great. The witcher is much harder to mod as the actor talks..any quests would be out of character for the game without the original actor as geralt.

@eldrach: If it gets finished, it still might take long enough that it will be released after Elder Scrolls 6 is out, at which point it will be compared to a much newer, better engine that could have been used instead. Same with Skywind

@deekeyes: What did I misunderstand? In the video people gave death threats and said horrible things to the makers for trivial stuff like not releasing a build because they were not allowed to yet by Beth. People suck that would do that kind of thing, etc. What am I missing?

@twogirlsonecub: More of a difference in aesthetic and the types of environments than the technology.

Skyrim's snow/mountains/tundra are obviously going to be less bright and colorful than Oblivion, doesn't make it worse looking though.

Next time you play Oblivion, take a close look at the trees: the leaves are not 3D modeled, they are ugly 2D sprites which rotate so they're always facing the player. That's not a thing in Skyrim

@Spartan_418: Yeah, but you don't have to look close to see that the trees are ugly in Skyrim. They're ugly from any distance and angle. You can fake something and make it look better than something that's done more realistically.

I tried playing X1X enhanced Skyrim half a year ago and couldn't do it because it looked so bad but had fun with the BC Oblivion which holds up decently to this day.

@twogirlsonecub:

Even with the total character overhaul, the animations looks stiff and crappy. I've modded oblivion hard and it did look good, but after following this project, i've seen the love and care they're providing for each area and the improvements being made...just awesome.

@Mogan: I guess it depends on personal tastes. I can't stand how flat Skyrim looks. Even back then I thought of it as a downgrade because everything looked so flat. And with the high res remasters on consoles the game looks even more like everything's made out of cardboard and the texture details are drawn on.

Oblivion exaggerates a lot of effects but its heavy use of normal maps and bloom makes it have a unique look that holds up.
