Assassin's Creed Odyssey Makes No Sense (And That's Okay)

Assassin’s Creed games have never been that realistic, but Odyssey’s mechanics and narrative clash in so many ways it’s dizzying. Somehow, though, it all kinda works.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey transports the franchise to ancient Greece, when the military driven Sparta and democratic Athens are in the midst of war. For the first time in the series, you get to choose whether to play as a man named Alexios or a woman named Kassandra. Regardless of your choice, your protagonist is the disgraced child of a Spartan general who grows up to be a neutral mercenary for hire.

As a mercenary, Kassandra and Alexios should hold no allegiance for any one side in the war, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey allows you to choose who they side with. If you want, you can ally with neither or both sides as well. In terms of gameplay, this allows Kassandra or Alexios to do missions for either army, even if they've spent the previous hour helping the other.

This opens the game up to some pretty enjoyable side quests and bounties, but it also clashes with the game's overall narrative. Even if Kassandra and Alexios aren't technically Spartan, it seems odd for them to betray their country. And when the game's story switches gears and presents plenty of evidence as to why Kassandra or Alexios would side with Athens, the game still allows you to kill the Athenian leadership.

In the video above, video producer Jake Dekker discusses how this ludonarrative dissonance--an inconsistency between a game's narrative told through the gameplay and told through the story--causes Assassin's Creed Odyssey to make no sense. It's not the only example either, as Kassandra and Alexios have access to seemingly supernatural abilities, like surviving a drop from any height without a pile of hay, that make no sense in the world of Assassin's Creed. However, as Jake also notes, this is totally okay. Despite the illogical disconnect between story and gameplay, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is still fun and absolutely worth playing.

In our Assassin's Creed Odyssey review, editor Alessandro Fillari gave the game an 8/10, writing, "Assassin's Creed Odyssey's ambition is admirable, which is reflected in its rich attention to detail for the era and its approach to handling the multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead. While its large-scale campaign--clocking in at over 50 hours--can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don't quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting."

Assassin's Creed Odyssey pulls inspiration from a lot of different games--including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mass Effect: Andromeda--to various levels of success. If you're still on the fence over whether or not to buy Assassin's Creed Odyssey, you can get a good understanding of the game by watching GameSpot social media producer Sam Leichtamer, Funhaus writer and producer Alanah Pearce, and Kinda Funny founder Greg Miller play through it together.

Cool vid. A lot of it does come down to, as Danny O’Dwyer would put it,

“Video games!”

And the game triumphs as a result.

It also has some really serious moments that it totally pulls off (Saints Row 2 did the same thing as you said, your friend getting pulled along by the car is still a memorable moment for me)

But stuff like the no fall damage and ‘magic’ knife actually has a narrative explanation in Odyssey, you just have to keep playing.

Red Dead Redemption has the worst ludonarrative dissonance. A man trying to redeem himself can go on a homicidal rampage? Really? Where was the criticism back then?

No... no it's not. Major gaming journalism sites like Gamespot condone Ubisoft's obvious cash grab and continue the trend of lowering the artistic bar (IGN does it too). Ubisoft chose ancient Greece to ride the wake of the God of War success. They rushed this product to market in a year, rehashing resources from Origins, and not worrying about quality - such as quality writing and making a cohesive storyline. This is not art. It's a manufactured product and the definition of a AAA-Gaming cash grab. It does not warrant our attention or praise, but thanks Jacob Dekker for cheering them on as they drop the bar a little further.

@Drake213:

-In development for 3 years.

-the writing is actually very good.

-the wealth of content is dizzying. Time, effort and love clearly went into its creation. Hardly a cash grab.

-lighten up you spoon.

@Drake213: Riding the wave of God of War? Do you actually believe that AC: Odyssey has been in the making only since the start of 2018? It has been in production for around 3 years, as are most AAA games these days. You are delusional if you think it takes under a year to produce anything on this scale. If you don't like it then don't play it (which you clearly haven't).

@Drake213: Oh how games get ruined because of market trends and business goals. I suppose this is the problem with big corporations. All numbers.

I'm really bummed that ubisoft abandoned the original story... It was somewhat interesting and original, and helped make a framework for the whole series. I really hope they pick it back up, I think it would actually help the series. It's getting a bit aimless now. I guess I can't pass complete judgement yet though until I see where they leave the series at the end of Odyssey.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a shameless cash-grab, just like Origins, which has been deliberately designed to be boring, grindy and slow in an effort to microtransactionally sell "time saver" packs to the player. Collectively you need to kill, apparently, over 1000 animals to upgrade your gear. Upgrades which barely affect the gameplay in any way.

Also: it's a shame the series' story has wandered so far from its roots. There's a cursory modern day bit, but what about Juno, the First Civilization villain who was released into the present day at the end of AC3 in 2012 and whose story seems to have been completely abandoned? Erudito? the missing Animus Subjects, Gavin etc. where has it all gone? I assume we're never going to get answers to this stuff after so many years now.

Such a shame.

@tom_cat_01:

A big part of this comment is you moaning about MTs. At a steady pace I was easily surpassing level requirements and actually stopped taking bounties because I didn’t want to reach 50 too fast.

On the upgrading thing...that’s just false. Don’t know who said that but they clearly hadn’t played the game. Completely inaccurate info.

I didn’t even bother to pick up the free temporary money and xp boosts from Uplay. Didn’t need them.

@briandavion: Except they ARE boring and grindy, Origins is the most 'grindy' of the series so far. . .unless Odyssey is worse, which wouldn't be a shock to me.

@ssdd_again: no worse then any other RPG. no you can't just speed run to the very end and you have to do side quests etc, but I don't see having to do CONTENT as grindy

@briandavion: It is worse, I spent hours running around hunting animals in Origins so that I could upgrade equipment. Completely wrecked any sense of flow in the game (which wasn't great anyway), if you want to upgrade you DO have to 'do side quests etc'. . .ergo, grindy.

I don't speed run. I also don't like being insulted by copy and paste development that has clearly been done to absorb my time/flesh out the game so that it seems deeper than it actually is.

I hate it when games force you to do drugs, because I'm very anti-drug.

Now, in AC Origins, the game explained mythical monsters with drug hallucinations, and you actually had to battle such monsters while the hero was stoned out of his head.

So, mythical beasts were just hallucinations caused by drugs.

Now in Odyssey, as I understand, mythical monsters are actually 'real' part of the game world. Meaning you no longer have to play thru those embarrassing 'lets do drugs and see monsters' sequences. To me, that is great.

Mind you, I'm sure this game has just as many 'lets do drugs' scenes as earlier Ubi games. Those people seem to really like drugs, is all i'm saying.

Despite this pro drug attitude in modern games, I say no to drugs. You should too.

Weird comment. There were no drugs in Odyssey. You drink some wine sometimes...

And as I understood it Bayek wasn’t blitzed out of his gourd. The afterlife scenarios were linked to pieces of Eden effecting people’s minds.

@Chaloner11:

Spartan women and men was mostly naked back then, the king of Sparta wanted men and women to grow up without any sense of shame or differences between women and men. Also no sexiesm or whatsoever..

Women trained in juvelins, bows, duggers and stuff (light weapons) and trained them to be leaders like men..

Men trained in all weapons all to be great warriors. And in most cases they had festivities when women judge and flirt men in a manner to increase their self-esteem and be able to take strong decissions when they get married and make family.

Overall women all of them was trained to be leaders like men! The above info is taken by real historical books.

Also there was penalties into men if they decided NOT to get married a spartan girl.. They removed their rights or most of their rights..

Really? SERIOUSLY? I have a real bone to pick with this article.

"Kassandra and Alexios have access to seemingly supernatural abilities, like surviving a drop from any height without a pile of hay, that make no sense in the world of Assassin's Creed."

Oh, you mean the the exact same game mechanic that has prevailed since every entry in the franchise ever? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? How the hell are people supposed to take you seriously when you make remarks like this. It's like you're wearing a sign saying "I haven't played any games" right on your neck, dude. People can b*tch all they want about "muh SJWs" coz there's a female protagonist and I don't give a crap about that. But to use this sole mechanic as an example of the unrealistic nature of Assassin's Creed? Man, screw off with that. Go play Minecraft or something.

@hey_its_chet: uhhh the mechanic to take no fall damage is actually completely new.

Before you always took damage when jumping off a mountain/house without some “cushion pile.

So check your facts

@Law2309@Mogan: I am referring explicitly to the case of leap of faith's in which you jump from a height and land in a stack of hay or bushes. That has always been in the games and the way the sentence was written implied that this very specific mechanic is new.

I disagree.

One of my relatives was about 12 yrs old when he asked me "was that George Washington dude a bad guy" (he wasn't living in the US in case you can't tell)?

When I asked him what in the world gave him the idea, he said AC3.

I wished the game didn't suggest in the least bit that it has any historical accuracy., you know, like LOTR.

But, they can tell whatever story they want, they have that right. They'll just sound stupid telling it.

I only ever bought an the first Assassins Creed game and Black Flag. I love the gameplay, but never enough to invest in the story. The whole part that the characters are just a genetic memory makes everything seem so disconnected from making choices. I do like the pirate element in Black Flag the most.
