Assassin's Creed Odyssey Makes No Sense (And That's Okay)

Assassin’s Creed games have never been that realistic, but Odyssey’s mechanics and narrative clash in so many ways it’s dizzying. Somehow, though, it all kinda works.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey transports the franchise to ancient Greece, when the military driven Sparta and democratic Athens are in the midst of war. For the first time in the series, you get to choose whether to play as a man named Alexios or a woman named Kassandra. Regardless of your choice, your protagonist is the disgraced child of a Spartan general who grows up to be a neutral mercenary for hire.

As a mercenary, Kassandra and Alexios should hold no allegiance for any one side in the war, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey allows you to choose who they side with. If you want, you can ally with neither or both sides as well. In terms of gameplay, this allows Kassandra or Alexios to do missions for either army, even if they've spent the previous hour helping the other.

This opens the game up to some pretty enjoyable side quests and bounties, but it also clashes with the game's overall narrative. Even if Kassandra and Alexios aren't technically Spartan, it seems odd for them to betray their country. And when the game's story switches gears and presents plenty of evidence as to why Kassandra or Alexios would side with Athens, the game still allows you to kill the Athenian leadership.

In the video above, video producer Jake Dekker discusses how this ludonarrative dissonance--an inconsistency between a game's narrative told through the gameplay and told through the story--causes Assassin's Creed Odyssey to make no sense. It's not the only example either, as Kassandra and Alexios have access to seemingly supernatural abilities, like surviving a drop from any height without a pile of hay, that make no sense in the world of Assassin's Creed. However, as Jake also notes, this is totally okay. Despite the illogical disconnect between story and gameplay, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is still fun and absolutely worth playing.

In our Assassin's Creed Odyssey review, editor Alessandro Fillari gave the game an 8/10, writing, "Assassin's Creed Odyssey's ambition is admirable, which is reflected in its rich attention to detail for the era and its approach to handling the multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead. While its large-scale campaign--clocking in at over 50 hours--can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don't quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting."

Assassin's Creed Odyssey pulls inspiration from a lot of different games--including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mass Effect: Andromeda--to various levels of success. If you're still on the fence over whether or not to buy Assassin's Creed Odyssey, you can get a good understanding of the game by watching GameSpot social media producer Sam Leichtamer, Funhaus writer and producer Alanah Pearce, and Kinda Funny founder Greg Miller play through it together.

Can't say I'm surprised, it's not ok either. Ubi have just pandered to the whiny gamers (who have complained about AC becoming stale for years) and just copied elements of popular RPG's into AC games (which are traditionally action/adventure) to try and freshen it up and in doing so they've ruined it/changed the franchise entirely.

It's just pathetic, I wish the devs had some backbone and just stuck to what they did best (AC 2/3/BF/Syndicate). Why couldn't they just take a break from releasing for a few years, make us wait, take AC up a notch. . . properly? "[nah, we'll just churn out the popular game flavour of the day and stick the AC name on it because it saves us time on marketing. . .and we know most of you are dumb enough to buy it anyway, thanks.]"

@ssdd_again: Repeating the same thing over and over requires less courage than redesigning the mechanics of an established series.

@mistervulpes: I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. I didn't say iterating over and over was always a bad thing. And Destiny has been more or less the same all of twice now, and the games were three years apart. Assassin's Creed has been more or less the same for most of it's 11 year, largely annualized run.

@Mogan:

Within each cycle, yeh kinda.

But to look at AC1 and AC Odyssey and say, “these are largely the same, there has been no evolution” is ludicrous.

It’s quite obvious that Quebec went out of their way to switch things up. But they can’t win either way =D

It’s either “this isn’t an AC game, too much has changed”

Or

“Look at AC and their annualised samey template”

Meanwhile actual games that take advantage of their player base get a pass from certain donuts I won’t mention. ;)

But then I go play Total War: Warhammer and I'm happy again.

@Mogan: right the point is DOW3 changed the franchise entirely (so did DOW2 actually and that was contriversial, with fans on both sides) and that killed the game. granted DOW3 decided to copy a game format that was widely avaliable for free and then expected people to pay 70 bucks for it. so the result was proably predictable

@nofreikinleoms: The animation quality is absolutely horrible. It feels like we're controlling string puppets. Its sad to see cause even early Assassin's Creed games (AC1, 2, 3) had fluid and realistic animation system. Ubisoft has gone downhill with each new AC game.

@3partan341: don't judge the game based off this, I've got the game and th guy doesn't know what he's talking about, literally all the little plot "inconsitancies" are easily explained if you actually pay attention to the dialogue.

@Law2309: actually I haven't bought any of the micro transactions because they're a complete and utter waste of money, the game throws Drachmae and XP at you to a point that you'd have to be a complete and utter idiot to buy the XP or money boosts. and the ship on historical acccuracy sailed ages ago. (flaming swords BTW are possiable, you occasionally do see them, almost always in the hands of entertainers as they're not the most pratical thing for actual fighting but it'd be possiable for someone to soak a sword blade in oil and light it on fire. at the very least as possiable as a schimatic from the 12th century describing how to fit a esily concealed gun into a forearm swiss army bracer ala what we saw in AC2) as for women, women warriors popping up is something that does happen throughout history, (if someone picks up a sword and starts stabbing folks with it, there's not a lot you can do if no one can BEAT THEM, keep in mind that well Ares is most famous as a war god, the most respected war god in the greek world was ATHENA) I think they perhaps over did it with women NPC fighters. but yeah games fun and the historiical inaccuracies are hardly a new thing, black flag had entire buildings that hadn't been built yet (and it was aknowledged as such in the codex)

@briandavion: I'm more concerned about the overuse of magic and no death from falling. The trailers and advertisement it make everything seem like it's going to play like Ryse on an open world. But the actual gameplay is full of Prince of Persia combat. Magic leaps, bouncing around from enemy to enemy like pinball and throwing magic swords.

@3partan341: Its click bait, don't fall for it. Watch how in the video this guy places himself awkwardly so that he can "accidentally" assassinate rather than talk to a quest giver. He's a pillock and another Eddie Macuch in the making. Comparing Saints Row 2 to this? Pathetic.

all im saying is if there wasn't such a drought with actually interesting open-world titles, this would be a 6/10. i don't care how big the world is and how much production $$ goes into it, the game feels dumb. the animations are dumb too. also, 5 minutes in, a bunch of bandits woke up from their grass nap and before i finished learning the button layout, i had killed eight people. this is after it gave me a choice to spare the two debt collector guys. im not trying to pacifist the game but it's very representative of the shallowness. i have other complaints but you get it lol

not a hater, just a disappointed person who's out 60.

@wrngsurgeon: Dumb? This is simply your opinion and not true of the content in the game. Perhaps you think that God of War is more becoming with its hack and slash coupled with a little exploration? This is an extension of what the last AC game was but in another universe. If you knew what that game was about you have no call to complain and if you don't like the genre then you only have yourself to blame for buying before trying.

I wouldn't normally say so much but to criticise the game after a few minutes of play is crazy.

@gotrekfabian: nah god of war was great but i didn't finish. (this is my fault as i work and go to school so i can't beat everything). i've been stuck on dead cells lately. controls are really nice you should try it man! oddly enough another random one for me was Timespinner. i like symphony of the night but i think the last adventure sidescroller or whatever metroidvania you wanna call it was that Eklysian (sp?) Tale? Too many copies but timespinner was clearly made with love.

look man, at the end of the day everyone just wants developers to put their all into their work. you want to feel inspired by playing their inspiration manifested. we look back to older games not because of nostalgia glasses, not for ignorance of greed existing in that time (a shitload of gouging etc.) but because we were all in row, standing and waiting for the next crazy thing these teams of artists would throw at us. it would make us draw, skateboard, listen to music we normally would not have. we could play what felt like the end result of a pen tapping on the chin of a master craftsman staring at a blank white story board.. and feel visceral abbreviations of his collective thoughts.

this year's annual release of assassin's creed didn't do it for me.

No that's not ok. When we do the "[insert game here] Makes No Sense (And That's Okay)", we lower the bar for what developers deliver on release. The apathy you're promoting screws us all over.

This Jake Dekker character can so easy manipulate you to the point where you'd actually say that an RPG title doesn't need a cohesive plot/story. That's the one thing RPGs have to have.

What's next "Black Ops 5 doesn't have guns, but that's ok"? I'm just stunned honestly.

@gregrout: except his entire base premise is "wrong" he's saying X doesn't make sense when it's basicly explained. the god like powers? explained (spoiler: it's a first civilization artifact) the willingness to side against athens and sparta both? the character is a mercenary, and it makes PERFECT sense, the dialogue indicates the lead character no longer sees themselves as Spartan anymore and that rather Sparta basicly rejected them. As for Athens your very first exposure to Athens is to learn that... it's corrupt (seriously the very first mission you undertake for Pericles, leader of Athens is to rig a friggen vote) the most understandable response given what the character says is, ultimately, to side with neither and just approuch the war as busniess.

@briandavion: Ok. The problem I'm seeing here has to do with this article existing. There's a lot of RPGs out there that accomplish a cohesive narrative. The ones that fail at this don't get an "It's Ok" article when they fall short. This is even a bigger crime when you factor in this game's deliberate grind mechanic.

The main story is gated through a player's level. There's no care about a smooth story / leveling progression system. Leveling in this game is an abusive grind mechanic. Players have to either pay upfront for "time savers" from the ingame store or go through a hellish grind designed to make those "time savers" look very nice and worth the money.

So, I'm having a tough time understanding why Ubisoft should get a walk on this. What I think happened here is Ubisoft is a mad dash to do a new Assassin's Creed game, recycled a whole lot of Origin's assets and rushed this game out the door, realizing far too late that the story doesn't mesh.

@gregrout: sure but what I'm saying is that they're wrong. I have no problem with the leveling system (and suspect those who do are rushing the main story and skipping side quests. that or just missing a lot cause they're in exploration mode) and the things he says don't make sense AREN'T recycled from Orgins, such as zone conquest etc. the problem is the article writer is trying to say "this apolitical mercenary shouldn't be apolitical!" which is silly. the article writer says "well this makes no sense" even though it's explained, fairly logicly, why it is the case. apparently the only real memories of Sparta itself Kassandra/Alexios has is being thrown off the cliff

Of course there will be some 'out there' mechanics, Odyssey is set in a part historical and part mythological universe as was its predecessor, Origins. If people can't get over that and accept that it isn't a pure realism experience then I think it's time to either stop gaming or stop over analysing. Sure, Odyssey has a few bugs and issues but it is without doubt one of the best Assassin's Creed games since it's inception.

Enjoyment seems to be something people skip over when it comes to games these days and prefer to whine about them instead. I'm sick of hearing how bad AC is from people who have never played even one or how the last two installments are not AC and yet the same people were complaining how the series had become stale.

@gotrekfabian: Been playing since 2. Favorites are Brotherhood, 4, and Origins. Forced myself to finish 3. Couldn't finish 5 due to boredom. Skipped Rogue and 6.

This article makes Odyssey sound like crap. I never liked the "supernatural" part of the series and the games really shine when they ignore that aspect. With Origins the supernatural crap wasn't enough to pull my enjoyment of the game. It still felt like I was in ancient Egypt. Odyssey sounds like it goes too far out the other end and now your character has literal superpowers.

@demon-returns: The opening was interesting. The middle was alright. Burnt out by the end. The homebase building was the epitome of the problems it had in previous games. Improve your base to make money to improve your base and nothing more. With only a minor tie-in to the story. Another annoying thing is that say you get attacked by a bear while on a time sensitive mission. You can desync just for leaving dead animals around. You HAVE to skin them. Because you're Native American and the "they don't waste anything" cliche.

Also has the number one most annoying "follow the target" missions in the entire series.

@Donut0389: In my opinion the article was designed as click bait but, thankfully, is failing at that. If you enjoyed AC: Origins then I would urge to you to buy Odyssey as it really does pull out what made that game great and then adds more to that formula which only seems to bolster the experience.

As for the ''super powers' I can tell you that they are as balanced as could be hoped for and not something which turns your character into a God. They make for a more interesting battle system than Origins and do not seem over the top at all. The only powers that seem OTT is the ability to jump from any height and not die but it is a great mechanic really. It allows quicker traversal when exploring and could have been abused but they made sure that when sneaking if you just jump down from any height you will be detected. The other would be the ability to warp to a guard and execute him and then warp to others but it just feels like a nice substitute for the double hidden blades in my opinion and is no more powerful than that.

If you miss this game then you'll be missing not just one of the best games in the AC series but one of the best games in 2018 and, let's face it, 2018 has been a great year for games.

@briandavion: Unfortunately, I think you're right. I enjoyed the previous games in the series tremendously and will always remember Ezio's story but I also welcome the evolution of the series which injected a much needed spark into the otherwise ailing series. If AC remained rooted in it's previous formula then we'd likely be seeing the collapse of the franchise entirely.

There's just no pleasing some people but hopefully those unhappy with the status quo will enjoy the fact that AC 3 and Liberation remasters are included in the season pass as well as available to purchase separately and can live out their desires with the original gameplay.

@gotrekfabian: indeed. and I suspect the change was made after careful study of the market etc. I suspect that among gamers the most dedicated fans of single player cideo games are found to be RPG fans. Ubi-soft has played with multiplayer in it's various titles since brotherhood, and cleartly not found much success with them (hence why they abandoned the brotherhood multiplayer play type, tried something differant with unity and then completely abandoned it by time syndicate came along) so going the RPG approuch makes sense.

@briandavion: I miss the multiplayer. Wolfpack in Black Flag was my personal favourite and I enjoyed the co-op in Unity as well despite the issues it suffered at it's time of release. Chances are that we'll never see them again as an addition to the AC games as they were but who knows, maybe there will be something formed from the current games where we can play socially again. I'd love to play the whole game in co-op or even just raiding some giant forts with my friends.
