Every 10/10 Game In GameSpot's History

GameSpot has given out the prestigious 10 score to only 16 games so far. Take a trip down memory lane with us as we honor these essential games.

Since 1996, GameSpot has only ever awarded 10/10 review scores to 16 games. In the video above, we take a trip down memory lane to showcase all 16--from 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to 2019's Disco Elysium.

At GameSpot, we don't believe that any game is perfect. No game, no matter how good it is, can be said to have absolutely zero flaws. So a game that receives a 10/10 review score on GameSpot is described as "essential," not "perfect." A 10/10 score is given to a game that is so good that--at the time the game was released--it's an experience that is essential to play, likely because the game does something that will have a long-standing and positive effect on the gaming industry.

A recent example of this is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which delivered an open-world RPG experience filled with engaging battles, well-written storytelling, compelling choices and in-game romances, and incredible side missions--all on a level that had never been seen prior to the game's release. Considering the state of most of the open-world RPGs that have come out after it, ranging from Mass Effect: Andromeda to GreedFall, you could argue that we still haven't. So, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a testament to what open-world RPGs can be, a golden standard for the genre until something even better comes along.

Though 2019 saw GameSpot assign two 10/10 review scores, only one was to a game: Disco Elysium. The other was given to Joker, the first 10/10 score GameSpot has ever given to a movie.

RDR 2 , GTA V, Assassins's creed Odyssey... just a few of the ESSENTIAL titles everybody has to play. But hey, we have Bayonetta 2 & Disco Elysium here... It's been a while since I took GS reviews for something serious, I don't think this time will come back, looking at some of their latest reviews.

Although I prefer text over video, Gamespot made some good choices and I still have trust in them (which I can’t say for IGN) and RIP my beloved Gamespy.

Divinity Original Sin II is a f-ing masterpiece. Agreed.

I'm surprised Mass Effect 2 didn't make the list.

It's hilarious to me how often this topic is covered. And every time I think to myself "MGSV is incomplete."

@edussz: The problem over Gamespot reviews isn't about it being a personal opinion. It's about Gamespot itself having almost no standard of scoring. Once upon a time, there was a shadow of a standard on how to score games, based on the weighted summation of different categories. Now it's just a free-for-all of randomized grievances.

@edussz: True but to be fair they are making an unnecessary big deal about it as no-one takes Gamespot reviews seriously anymore anyway.

@deviltaz35: They're my number one place for review scores. I don't buy unless my Gamespot overlords tell me its ok to.

@deviltaz35: Readers clearly take Gamespot's review scores more seriously than their own staff does. I understand that they can't have several different people play through a 30+ hour game to agree on a score of 10 but they can certainly do that with a film like Joker, which was more unoriginal and formulaic than an After School Special.

It's hard to take this list seriously when the criteria for evaluating a game change depending on the whim of the moment, the taste of the coffee machine, and who's making the game.

For example, In Zelda BOTW story is not a factor and gameplay and exploration is.

Then in Gears 5, the overall score 7 because "Story peters out after Act 2, with most of the rest feeling inconsequential"

Even in the article explaining makes little sense.

"Considering the state of most of the open-world RPGs that have come out after it, ranging from Mass Effect: Andromeda to GreedFall, you could argue that we still haven't. So, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a testament to what open-world RPGs can be, a golden standard for the genre until something even better comes along."

Then where's Call of Duty perfect 10? Every FPS since 2008 have copy the formula

Why Bayonetta 2 suddenly gets a 10 cause aside from being exclusive to Nintendo there's nothing new in the game compared to Bayonetta 1(unless you count the side coop game)?

How did MGS5 improve on the Ubisoft formula (Farcry4 was released the same year)?

How come a mobile game or a portable console game never seems to have an essential game?

POkemon?

Wario Ware?

Fire Emblem?

@brunopita: it was 9.6. But it deserves that list more than some that are in there.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was the worst of the first 4 MGS's, though.

Out of all the games released in the last 23 years Gamestop says only 16 are "essential" and worthy of a 10/10 rating? Well I totally disagree and i think the fact that the Joker movie is one of these games speaks volumes about the validity of this list.

The video was unnecessarily time consuming. A simple list could have still giving the site a click.

I'm about five hours into Disco and I think that's well past the point where an "essential" game should hook the player so well, they don't want to stop. It has been years since any game made me feel this bored. I have played hidden object mysteries on my Kindle that felt less linear and had the same "click the shiny object" depth.

Again, this is only six hours into it and my opinion will hopefully change, but I think that Gamespot needs to revisit the means in which a score of 10 gets final approval. At least half of your staff had better name that text-driven dice roller as their personal Game of the Year to have any credibility.
