Every 10/10 Game In GameSpot's History

GameSpot has given out the prestigious 10 score to only 16 games so far. Take a trip down memory lane with us as we honor these essential games.

Since 1996, GameSpot has only ever awarded 10/10 review scores to 16 games. In the video above, we take a trip down memory lane to showcase all 16--from 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to 2019's Disco Elysium.

At GameSpot, we don't believe that any game is perfect. No game, no matter how good it is, can be said to have absolutely zero flaws. So a game that receives a 10/10 review score on GameSpot is described as "essential," not "perfect." A 10/10 score is given to a game that is so good that--at the time the game was released--it's an experience that is essential to play, likely because the game does something that will have a long-standing and positive effect on the gaming industry.

A recent example of this is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which delivered an open-world RPG experience filled with engaging battles, well-written storytelling, compelling choices and in-game romances, and incredible side missions--all on a level that had never been seen prior to the game's release. Considering the state of most of the open-world RPGs that have come out after it, ranging from Mass Effect: Andromeda to GreedFall, you could argue that we still haven't. So, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a testament to what open-world RPGs can be, a golden standard for the genre until something even better comes along.

Though 2019 saw GameSpot assign two 10/10 review scores, only one was to a game: Disco Elysium. The other was given to Joker, the first 10/10 score GameSpot has ever given to a movie.

Uncharted 4 totally deserves a 10 out of F@CK!NG 10! And red dead 2 should've gotten one as well.

@gr4h4m833zy: I love the Uncharted game but 4 ruined it for me it was terrible. How could you give that a 10? . Puzzles were far too easy and it just jumped around all over the place with poor editing. This was clearly due to disruptions during production with key members of the team leaving the studio. This only made it to release because it was Naughty Dog not because it was a quality title.

@gr4h4m833zy: though I got miles and miles and miles out of RDR2 I’d still give it a 9/10. The control scheme was the most minor hiccup for me in that Rockstar seemingly failed to improve much. Other than that absolutely loved it.

God of War, however, felt better all around in the sense that the developer more accurately delivered what it set out to do. Aside from both games having beautiful graphics, a fun story, and overall fun gameplay. I gave that a 9.5/10 Even though I had over double the hours of enjoyment with RDR2.

@jumalan75: Hm.......interesting......very interesting. So......and by the way, i would also give god of war a 10/10 as well as rdr2 but what do you give dmc 5 and sekiro? I give both 10/10 as well. Oh and star wars jedi fallen order.

@gr4h4m833zy: didn’t play Fallen Order yet or DMC 5. Sekiro to me was right up there. Very different game but I’d have to say that’s a 9+

I might be a little biased with those FROM games though. Some people thought it was too similar to DS/BB, too hard or don’t like the mystical weirdness of the story.

I felt combat was great, gameplay and graphics great... less punishing than DS and yet still not without consequence or great reward.

Only game I can think of off the top of my head that I have a 10 was Last of Us. Was so balanced to me in every regard and I had multiple fist pump moments. That was better to me than most tv series I’ve watched.

@jumalan75: yeah the last of us is a masterpiece as well. But one more question please? The outer worlds and death stranding? What would you give those? I say the outer worlds is up there.

@gr4h4m833zy: outer worlds - super easy, but fun story, love the quirkiness and characters, graphics meh, gameplay nothing amazing, but I’d give it an 8.5-9. I don’t think they ever meant for it to be super challenging for instance.

Death stranding I’m only about 15-20hrs in. I’m enjoying it but not sure what to make of it yet. Would I say it’s some masterpiece? Probably not. I do like some of the unique mechanics of balance and terrain traversal. I also do like the engine they used. GoW made my ps4 pro fan scream though I think I have one of those bunk fans. Death Stranding is crisp and runs relatively silent for the graphics. Definitely not a game for someone who needs consistent stimulation though. I also like how the game goes from 0-60 on the stress scale during a BT encounter

What about you? DMC, Fallen Order, GoW, RDR2 etc?

@deviltaz35: I actually like the graphics. Just saying compared to the likes of GoW or RDR 2 it’ll never be in the ballpark. It haS its own charm and works for the game, just nothing to write home about.

@jumalan75: always nice to hear reviews from people who aren't professional. I loved everything about every game we've talked about. About to start shenmue 3. I know it could be better (according to the reviews) but i think im going to still love it anyhow. Great to chat from a fellow gamer from time to time is all.

@gr4h4m833zy: indeed... good discussion. You ever play Persona 5? Was my first of that genre and I had that one up there too.

At some point I’ll have to try out DMC 5.

@jumalan75: ya know? I bought it and days gone the first day it came out and i still haven't really experienced it. Seen videos on youtube and played maybe the first 20 minutes and was impressed but my mind was on other games. Cant wait to get to it eventually though. My game collection consists of at 123 xbox one and ps4 games. So busy but i will get to it eventually.

FF VII and IX deserve a 10. And I still don't understand why The Witcher is so highly rated. The game is rife with flaws, are you just overlooking those when you throw the 10's at it?

@Destructionzz: Witcher 3 is an amazing game! I've played 300 hours of it in one play through! If you had said MGS5, I could have understood you because of it's lackluster ending... But Witcher 3 is a masterpiece! From start to end!

@edussz: They did say The Witcher, perhaps they mean the original PC one :) . I still liked it but i can see why a lot would not. I still think Witcher 2 is the best one because of it's truly dark premise.

@Destructionzz: You can't make a game of the scope of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim without flaws, they're ridiculously huge, ofc not every aspect of them is gonna be perfect, so you can't be as strict with the vote as if you'd be with an 8-hours linear game.
If a game can't have any flaw to get a 10, then all open worlds are doomed from the start.

@ichirei: I don't know whether i would call them flaws. They made certain design decisions because they had to due to memory constraints on consoles. I think considering the hardware it is on they did an amazing job though. I just prefer Witcher 2 story.

@ichirei: So it's exempt from being judged on its flaws because it's a big game? How else would you judge it, and how else would it get any less than a 10, if you didn't consider the flaws. That logic means every big game is a 10.

@Destructionzz: Is that really what you got from my comment? I obviously didn't mean that you can't criticize or consider flaws in big open world games, I only meant that you can't be as strict when judging them as you'd be in other smaller, more linear games.

@ichirei: I still think that considering flaws alone the game is already not a 10, then add in the fact that it isn't that great either. But that's my opinion.

I agree with most of them, just not with The Witcher 3, Uncharted 4 and MGSIV.

I'm a big fan of uncharted but no way was A Thief's End a 10/10 game. Great game? Yes. 10/10? No way.

@peterhorner1867: 7 at best , it was actually weak for a Naughty Dog game with plot holes and laziness throughout the story.

Journey was unique, but not a 10. I also think The Last of Us is a 10. Uncharted 4 is a 9 - 9.2.

@barnold81: Journey was one of the most overrated pieces of crap ever. I played it and NEVER saw or understood the hype over this game. It does not deserve to be on that list.

@barnold81: lol Last of us is a 7 at best. Ellie is the most annoying character to ever grace a video game aside from the kid from God of War who is somehow even worse.

@barnold81: Journey was reviewed and given a 9 upon release. Somehow, when it got re-released as the same game on PS4 Gamespot bumped the score up to a 10.

So even Gamespot agrees the game doesn't deserve a 10.
