GameStop, Best Buy Have PS5 Preorders, But the Sites Are Slammed

The Sony PS5 is now available for preorder! At least in theory. With major retailers like Best Buy and Walmart going down for hours at a time, PlayStation 5 preorders haven’t exactly rolled out smoothly. But we’re here to help. Here’s how to get your hands on a shiny new PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition.

Where to Preorder PS5

Latest update (11:08 PM EST): BestBuy’s PS5 preorders seem to be sold out for now. GameStop PS5 preorders are coming on and offline, but may now be fully sold out as well.

These links below are your first and best choice from buying a PS5. None of them had easy-to-purchase stock last time we checked, but things are changing rapidly! We’re always keeping these links up to date, so check these first:

Walmart put out a statement saying if you missed out on preordering through its website, you’ll be able to “pre-order in Walmart stores on 9/22 for $499 (digital edition for $399).”

Amazon’s placeholder page initially had item details, but it has since been taken it down. If an Amazon link or other retailer link changes or is swapped we will update this pages to always maintain the latest, so keep checking back.

Sony started sending out invitations for preorders to those who signed up on their site. Check your inbox to see if you have one. If so, you can grab yours on Friday.

Also, while you’re here, you can get much more immediate stock updates by following IGN Deals on Twitter.

GameStop PS5 Preorder Bundles

If you don’t mind paying more, but also getting more, when you preorder PS5, check out one of these preorder bundles at GameStop:

Preorders for PS5 were supposed to begin in full tomorrow, September 17, at certain retailers, according to a tweet from Sony. But with Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop all putting up their preorders early, we aren’t sure what that means for the “official” PS5 preorder date. Maybe they’ll have more stock, or maybe they’re now fully sold out. We’ll let you know as soon as things change.

PS5 Game Preorders

Most AAA PS5 launch and launch window games are now thankfully up for preorder from most retailers, including Demon’s Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. As Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and others bring more games online we’re adding to and expanding these lists:

PS5 Release Date, Price, and Recent News

Both versions of the PS5, with or without a disc drive, have a November 12 release date in the US. And we now know how much PS5 costs: $499 for the standard version, and $399 for the discless digital-only model.

Earlier, developers shared their takes on the SSD and 3D Audio features of the upcoming console. It’s shaping up to be a very cool console. Sony also set up a page for PS Plus members to sign up for a chance to secure a PS5 preorder directly from Sony.

We also got news Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart is definitely a PS5 launch game, but during Gamescom it was confirmed to be a “launch window” game, which could mean anything.

If you’re just here for the console wars, you can check out our article on where to sign up for Xbox Series X preorders.

Where to Preorder PS5 in the UK

The “global rollout” for PS5’s release happens on November 19. Here’s where you can find links for PS5 preorders in the UK:

Pre-orders for UK retailer GAME have gone up early, and you can currently pre-order a number of different PS5 bundles from the online retailer. PS5 games have also gone up for pre-order, alongside several new accessories. PS5 costs £449.99 from GAME, with the digital edition costing £359.99.

Will PS5 Be Easy to Get?

So far, it’s been very tough. Sure, lots of people have preordered their PS5 or PS5 Digital, but it’s not without a few hiccups or total site-outages.

PS5 Price

The PS5 standard console with a disc drive costs $499, while the discless version will cost $399.

PS5 Game Prices

The good news is we know games like Far Cry 6 support free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. While it looked as though all PS5 and Xbox Series X games will cost $70, more recent developments seem to point to publishers holding onto the current $59.99 price for many new games, at least for the time being. It appears now many first-party Sony PS5 games will cost $70 after all, including Demon’s Souls and Destruction All Stars. However, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a $50 price tag, and looks amazing by the way.

For a look at the first round of PS5 games, make sure to check out our guide to the PS5 launch game line-up.

Will My PS4 Controller Work on PS5?

No. Well, not at least for PS5 games. Sony confirmed the DualShock 4 won’t work for playing PS5 games, but you WILL be able to use your existing PS4 controllers to play “supported PS4 games.” Speaking of which…

Will PS5 Be Backwards Compatible?

Yes. Well, for PS4, we know some supported games will work. In a (now removed) entry on its support page, Ubisoft said of PS5 backwards compatibility it “will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games.” So unlike Xbox, which is leaning into backwards compatibility all the way back to the original Xbox as a selling point, it looks like PS5 backwards compatibility comes with some asterisks.

However, Sony introduced the PlayStation Plus Collection, Sony’s answer to Xbox Game Pass. At launch, PS Plus members will be able to download and play some of the biggest PS4 games as part of their subscription.

Godfall Confirmed As A PS5 Launch Title

We’re still learning the full PS5 launch line-up now that we know that the system is releasing on November 12 for $500 (or $400 for the digital edition). One PS5 game that was announced early, Godfall, has now been announced as a launch title, meaning that you can grab it alongside the new system.

Godfall was actually the very first game confirmed for PS5, first revealed in December 2019. It’s a third-person, loot-heavy action game developed by Counterplay Games, and it’ll be coming to the Epic Game Store on November 12, too.

The co-op game will feature no microtransactions, which is especially welcome news since the price of PS5 games has crept up a bit.

For an in-depth preview of Godfall from GameSpot, check out Phil Hornshaw’s feature, Godfall Looks To Create Its Own Genre With Better Loot And Skillful Combat.

You can check out GameSpot’s Godfall preorder guide to make sure you get the action-RPG on day one. The PS5 version isn’t up yet, but you can take a stab at getting your hands on the console itself with our PS5 preorder guide.

Nvidia 30-Series Go on Sale Tomorrow Morning: Here’s When

UPDATE: According to Newegg, the 3080 cards go on sale at 6 AM PT/9 AM ET tomorrow, September 17.

This might be one of the most exciting times in gaming I can recall. Not only did we get Oculus Quest 2 news today, we’re also getting the very-real possibility of PS5 preorder news and the RTX 3080 graphics cards from Nvidia launch tomorrow, September 17.

But where can you get yourself one of these powerful new cards? The good news is retailers already have placeholder pages ready to go live whenever Nvidia gives the order from on high. The bad news is, since there weren’t any preorders for the RTX 3080, it’s likely this will be a very popular card.

If you weren’t aware, the 3080 is amazing. In our RTX 3080 review, we praised its price-point and power, calling it a dramatic improvement over its predecessor.

Where to Buy RTX 3080 Graphics Cards

These links aren’t live yet, but this is where you’ll find the pages to order your RTX 3080. Be sure to check them often once the sales period goes online. We don’t have an exact timing yet, but we do know RTX 3080 cards go on sale September 17.

[poilib element=”commerceDeal” parameters=”slug=nvidia-30-series-preorders”]

When Will the Other 30-Series Graphics Cards Be Available?

We know the more powerful (and significantly more expensive) RTX 3090 will be available to buy on September 24. As for the 3070, we don’t have a firm date just yet.

The PS5 Is Even Bigger Than The Xbox Series X

We now know just about everything we need to know about the PlayStation 5 ahead of release–it’ll release on November 12 for $500, and launch games include Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. We also know what the box looks like, and what’s inside it. But it’s also important that you make some room for the system in your entertainment unit–the PS5 is easily the biggest PlayStation yet.

The official dimensions for the PS5 have been released, and it’s enormous. The disc drive version of the console is a bit bigger and heavier, but the digital version of the console is also very big. Here’s the measurements.

PlayStation 5

  • US: 15.35in × 4.09in × 10.23in (width x height x depth, excludes base)
  • Metric: 390mm x 104mm x 260mm (width x height x depth, excludes base)
  • Weight: 9.92lbs (4.5kg)

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

  • US: 15.34in × 3.62in × 10.23mm (width x height x depth, excludes base)
  • Metric: 390mm x 92mm x 260mm (width x height x depth, excludes base)
  • Weight: 8.59lbs (3.9kg)

As Kotaku points out, this makes the PS5 quite a bit bigger than the Xbox One X, and much bigger than the Xbox Series S.

Thankfully, the PS5 can be laid down flat if you don’t have room to stand it up–as many people won’t–but you’ll need to make sure you have room for it in your entertainment unit.

If you want to get your hands on a PS5 at launch, you’ll want to check out GameSpot’s preorder guide–the system is already starting to sell out in presales.

PS5 Release Date & Price, Final Fantasy 16, And Splinter Cell VR | Save State

Today’s PS5 showcase had a lot to offer, and finally revealed the next-gen console’s date and price. PlayStation 5 is launching in November. There is a standard console, as well as an all-digital version with no disc drive. We also learned about the PlayStation Plus Collection, available on day one, which features a list of popular PS4 games God of War, Persona 5, Days Gone, Until Dawn, and more.

The PS5 event opened with a trailer for Final Fantasy 16, which featured a lot of combat. FF XVI will be a PS5 console exclusive, coming in 2021. We learned about an upcoming God of War sequel as well.

PS5 wasn’t the only event today – there was also the 2020 Facebook Connect event, which included some big announcements for the Oculus VR headset. The Oculus Quest 2 releases in October. Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell VR games for the Oculus Quest 2.

Sony Boss Talks About PS5 Games Also Coming To PS4

Sony boss Jim Ryan has commented on the news that a number of PlayStation 5 games will also be released on PlayStation 4. Speaking to The Washington Post, Ryan said releasing titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West on both PS5 and PS4 is all about giving people a choice for where they want to buy their games.

“No one should be disappointed,” Ryan told the publication. “The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice. I’m really quite pleased about the situation.”

Some might have been surprised when Sony announced the cross-gen strategy for those games. After all, Ryan said earlier this year that Sony planned to release PS5 games at launch that would be exclusive to the platform because the company wants to create content that can “really only be enjoyed on PS5.”

The PS4 has been enormously successful for Sony, selling more than 100 million systems to date. Ryan said Sony will continue to support the console for the next three or four years, and that’s part of the reason why Sony’s big first-party games are also coming to the PS4. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4,” he said.

In releasing these marquee titles across generations, Sony is taking a similar approach to Microsoft, which plans to release its big games for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said forcing people to buy new hardware is against what the spirit of gaming is all about.

If you want to get your hands on a PS5 at launch, you’ll want to check out GameSpot’s preorder guide–the system is already starting to sell out in presales. Sony has also clarified more details on the PS5’s backwards compatibility feature, stating that 99% of PS4 games will be playable on the new machine.

PS5 Box Art Revealed For Disc And Digital Versions

The PlayStation 5 will release on November 12 for $500, and both an all-digital and a disc drive version of the system will be available. As the hype cycle grows, every new reveal is exciting–including what the box will look like.

Now, we have the retail box art for both versions of the system. You can check them out in the tweet from Cheap Ass Gamer below. Check them out and know the box that will, more than likely, sit in your cupboard for the full console generation once the system is set up.

Both systems will have the same specs, and can run games at 4K or 8K. While the systems themselves look very similar, the box arts are different colors–one white, one black. The more expensive system is white, which is the reverse of the Xbox situation.

Of course, which box you like more is unlikely to be a factor in your decision to pick one or the other.

Now we know both what the packaging looks like, and what’s inside the box. Both versions of the PS5 will ship with a single DualSense controller, a HDMI cable, and free game Astro’s Playroom.

If you want to grab the system yourself, check out the PlayStation 5 preorder guide. The system is already selling out at various outlets.

The Next Nintendo Console Will Be Released Before 2100

This should surprise no one, but Nintendo is not going to exit the hardware business anytime soon. As part of the company’s latest corporate management briefing, the firm revealed that it’s working on new hardware, and that it will be released before the end of the century.

A slide confirms that Nintendo’s “next gaming system” will launch sometime in “20XX,” which means it will be released before the year 2100. In reality, whatever this system ends up being, it will surely be released before then, but Nintendo isn’t ready to commit to any dates. You can check out the graphic below, and have a chuckle that Nintendo decided to completely omit the Wii U.

The Switch is currently riding high with more than 60 million units sold worldwide to date. The console is keeping up its momentum, too, as it recently set a new US record for the highest dollar sales of any console in history for an August month.

Nintendo is expected to release an enhanced Switch model in 2021, and whatever console comes next would follow sometime after. Nintendo’s console cycle periods usually run for 5-6 years, but Nintendo believes the Switch might enjoy success for a longer period than that.

In other Nintendo news, the company has also reaffirmed that the Mario movie from the makers of Minions remains scheduled to release in 2022. The company may also be working on other non-gaming entertainment extensions of its franchises.

Nintendo has also confirmed that more than 200 million Nintendo Accounts have now been created worldwide, while the Switch Online service now has 26 million subscribers.
