The Witcher: Blood Origin Casts a New Lead Actress

Netflix has cast Sophia Brown (Giri/Haji) as Éile in The Witcher: Blood Origin – a replacement for the starring role after Jodie Turner-Smith left production.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Netflix wrote: “Sophia Brown joins as Éile, an elite warrior-turned-nomadic musician who is forced to return to the way of the blade after a grand reckoning on the Continent sends her on a quest for vengeance and redemption”

Previously, Jodie Turner-Smith was cast in the role, but left before filming started due to a scheduling conflict. Brown joins Laurence O’Fuarin (Vikings) and Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery), who will play Fjall and Scían respectively.

Blood Origin is a prequel series to Netflix’s mainline Witcher show, set in an elven world 1200 years before the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. It will tell a brand new story “lost to time” — including “the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.” It will be a story told over six episodes, and doesn’t yet have a release date.

Blood Origin is being developed by the original series’ showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and Declan de Barra who wrote The Witcher Season 1 episode ‘Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials.’ If you want to know more, we’ve explained how the show fits into The Witcher timeline.

It’s possible we’ll learn more about the show during tomorrow’s WitcherCon, which includes Henry Cavill, developers of the Witcher games, and more. That means we should also learn more about The Witcher Season 2, which wrapped filming in April.

Dark Souls 3 Now Runs At 60FPS on Xbox Series X/S

Thanks to Microsoft’s FPS Boost, Dark Souls 3 on Xbox Series X/S will now run at 60 FPS.

Revealed on Twitter by Xbox, this free update is now available to all Xbox Series X/S owners. To get the most out of this FPS Boost upgrade, Microsoft recommends rebooting your console after the update is complete.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/04/04/dark-souls-3-review”]

As noted by Eurogamer, this upgrade brings Dark Souls 3 closer to the performance levels seen on PS5. Via backwards compatibility, Dark Souls 3 locks the game at 1080p/60 FPS on Sony’s latest console. While the Xbox Series X/S version still only supports resolution up to 900p, the 60 FPS jump will provide a much smoother experience than it had before.

This FPS Boost, in combination with the Xbox Series X/S’ SSD hard drives that cut down on load times, makes Dark Souls 3 worth another look for those that may have been holding off due to the disparity in performance on the consoles. It’s also great for those looking to replay all the FromSoftware games before Elden Ring is released in early 2022.

Dark Souls 3 is just one of the 95 games that support FPS Boost on Xbox Series X/S, a list that now includes Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Yakuza 6, Alien: Isolation, Metro: Last Light, and much more.

The Lord Of The Rings: Peter Jackson Recalls The One Time He “Snapped” On Set

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings, Deadline spoke with many of the key players involved in getting the movie made for a deep dive retrospective. The full piece is a fascinating look back into what has become one of the biggest fantasy movie series ever, and it contains a number of eye-catching stories about the struggle to get the movies made.

In particular, the budget was a concern. Jackson was initially given $60 million per movie, but this was optimistic. In reality, he needed at least $120 million for each movie, and this ballooning budget caused a stir amongst the financiers who were paying for it.

“There was a lot of pressure, and they were very upset with us as the budgets went up,” Jackson said of New Line executives Rolf Mittwe and Bob Shaye. “The anger was understandable. They aren’t the bad guys in this story; we are really the bad guys for going over budget.”

This pressure and anger eventually “stabilized,” Jackson said, when producer Barrie Osborne joined the project. At this time, the movie got “re-budgeted and realistic.”

“We all felt a bit under siege, but looking back on it, I get it, I understand it all now much clearer,” Jackson said.

While things did eventually settle down, Jackson recalled a particularly tense moment when he blew a fuse on set. While filming the Helm’s Deep scene for The Two Towers, Jackson eyed Osborne walking up to the remote set in a rock quarry, carrying a special phone that could work in off-the-grid locations. Osborne had New Line’s Michael Lynne on the phone for Jackson to discuss budget concerns and the possibility of suing the director, but Jackson was having none of it.

Here’s how it went down:

“It was a period of time when New Line were at their most angry with us in terms of the budget,” Jackson said. “I am on the parapet, probably with Viggo [Mortensen], and I see Barrie. It took him about 30 minutes to huff and puff his way to get on the top, and so I kept on shooting. Barrie arrives and says, ‘I have the studio, I’ve got to connect you with Michael Lynne of New Line.’ I ask why. He says, ‘Oh, he’s going to threaten to sue you and sell the house from under you to cover the cost overruns.’ Barrie was just the messenger, but it was one of the only points where I really snapped. I said, ‘Just tell Michael Lynne that I’m shooting this f**king film and I’m doing the best job I can, and I’m not going to interrupt my day with a phone call like that.’ Barrie picked up the cellphone and made his way back down to the car and drove off.”

Also in the piece, Jackson recalls a time when he saw a different side of Shaye. He traveled to Los Angeles to screen footage from the film at Shaye’s house, and Jackson witnessed Shaye breaking down into tears in the bathroom over his concerns about doing right by the stakeholders.

“Before it started, Bob signaled to me with his finger, you know, ‘Come with me.’ I followed him, and we went into a bathroom, he shut the door. I’m there alone in a bathroom with Bob Shaye thinking, what the hell is this? He looked at me and he said, ‘Please, Peter, please, we have all these partners, they’re relying on the success of this film. If it doesn’t work, they’re going to go under, so I just want you to know how important it is for me that we don’t let our partners down.’ And he began to cry. I mean, Bob began to sob, and it was literally the most personal moment that I ever had with him.”

Jackson added: “I just said to Bob, ‘Look, I’m doing my best, Bob. I hear you, I get it, and I understand, and I’m trying to make the best film I can.’ He really cared. He was crying not on behalf of New Line. He was crying on behalf of all the international partners that they brought on board to help finance the film, the Greens and the Hadidas, all the independent distributors that had bought into the project. He was crying on their behalf, not on his own, or his own company’s behalf.”

This is just a very small sampling of the fascinating insight from Deadline’s piece–go read the full thing here.

The Lord of the Rings would go on to become a massive success both commercially and critically. The entire series won 17 Academy Awards, and The Return of the King specifically won 11 on its own, including Best Picture. Jackson would go on to direct The Hobbit trilogy, but it was not as successful critically, and Jackson later acknowledged he was winging it.

Looking ahead, Warner Bros. is producing a Lord of the Rings animated movie, while Amazon is currently shooting a Lord of the Rings TV series. Outside of film and TV, Daedalic Entertainment just shared more details on its upcoming game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. What’s more, a new Lord of the Rings audiobook is coming from Andy Serkis.

Scream 5 Director Says Movie Is Entirely Finished

The upcoming fifth Scream movie is now finished. The film–simply titled Scream–it due to hit theaters in January 2022.

The completion of Scream was announced on Twitter by co-director Tyler Gillett. He posted an image of himself and directing partner Matt Bettinelli-Olpin posing with the series’s iconic killer Ghostface and stated that he was “so excited for you to see it!” Check it out below:

Scream wrapped production back in November 2020 and releases on January 14 2022. The movie features several of the cast members from Wes Craven’s original Scream movies, namely Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Marley Shelton. They will be joined by new actors Jack Quaid (The Boys), Melissa Barrera (Vida, the upcoming In the Heights) and Jenna Ortega (Insidious: Chapter 2, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous).

Plot details are currently underwraps, but Cox recently suggested that the movie would be more than just the fifth film in a long-running series. “It’s not Scream 5, this is Scream,” she said. “These directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely, it’s a new franchise. It’s hip, it’s scary, it’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s going to be fantastic.”

As well as Scream 5, there are also new entries in the Candyman, Halloween, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre series on the way. Candyman releases in August, while Halloween Kills arrives in October. The ninth Texas Chainsaw movie is also expected soon, but that doesn’t have a release date yet.

CD Projekt Red Officially Opens Its First Canadian Studio

Cyberpunk and The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red continues to expand to new territories. The developer’s deal to open an office in Vancouver, first announced in March, has now closed.

“It’s official!” the studio said on Twitter with an image of the CD Projekt Red Vancouver logo. Games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad said on Twitter that the deal closed today, July 8.

In March, CD Projekt Red announced that it had acquired Digital Scapes, a company it had been working with for three years already, to establish its first Canadian studio.

CD Projekt Red Vancouver joins the studio’s main teams in Krakow and Wroclaw Poland, and all three will work together on the company’s upcoming games.

“For three years we have been closely working together, and we trust them completely. Digital Scapes have put in a great deal of work during the making of Cyberpunk 2077, assisting with development of the game and optimizing its various features,” CD Projekt Red head of production and CTO Paweł Zawodny said. “In addition to contributing to our projects the new team will help us perfect our technologies and will broaden our competences in this respect. “We believe that the hugely talented Digital Scapes crew is the perfect foundation upon which to build a wider CD Projekt Red Vancouver team.”

Heading up CD Projekt Red Vancouver is Marcin Chudy, who himself is Polish-Canadian.

“Being a Polish Canadian, I personally take great satisfaction in building bridges between Canadian and Polish game development industries,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for Canadian developers to get involved with CD Projekt Red’s incredible IP and for CD Projekt Red to tap into Canada’s deep talent pool and game-making craft.”

CD Projekt Red has a number of ongoing projects. In addition to its efforts to support and improve Cyberpunk 2077, the studio is launching a Pokemon Go-style AR game called The Witcher: Monster Slayer on July 21. Additionally, the first-ever WitcherCon event from Netflix and CD Projekt Red takes place on July 9.

Dragon Age 4 Producer Shares Consolation Concept Art

While fans were disappointed by the news that neither Dragon Age nor Mass Effect would be making a showing at the upcoming EA Play Live, there is a tiny morsel of new Dragon Age 4 concept art to obsess over–which hints at the return of a group first encountered in Origins.

As picked up by GamesRadar, the artwork was shared by executive producer Christian Dailey, who apologized for the game not being a part of EA Play. Dailey assured fans that work on the game was progressing well, and promised that more would be shared when the time was right.

The message was shared alongside a new piece of concept art from Dragon Age 4, with eagle-eyed fans quickly spotting the crest of the Antivan Crows. The artwork depicts what are presumably a number of Crows members engaged in a rooftop fight, with a masked woman appearing front and center.

The Crows were first introduced in the very first Dragon Age game, as a group of assassins whose membership included suave companion Zevran Arainai. The Crows make subsequent appearances during a Zevran-focused quest in Dragon Age 2, and are later mentioned in Inquisition‘s war table quests.

Previous concept art has included another familiar faction, the Grey Wardens. Not much is currently known about the still-untitled upcoming Dragon Age game, other than a confirmation that the game will be set in Tevinter. The game still has no official release window.

Apex Legends Announces New Thrillseekers Event

Apex Legends has announced a new event called Thrillseekers, which is set to arrive on July 13. The event will include a new Arenas map, as well as three weekly rewards tracks offering some brand-new loot.

Like other recent events, Thrillseekers is heavily focused on the game’s Arenas mode, which was added at the start of Season 9. The event includes a brand-new Arenas map called Overflow, a lane-focused map that is designed to reward tactical play. The name refers to flowing chutes of lava, which break up the map into its distinct sections. The map has two POIs with fairly self-explanatory names: Overlook and Slope.

Thrillseekers also includes three weekly rewards tracks across the course of the event, which are unlocked by earning points in Arenas play. Week one rewards the brand-new Rampart Wastelander Set, week two includes Battle Pass boosters and other useful items, while week three contains the new Lethal Enforcer Bangalore Skin.

Thrillseekers will also include purchasable event limited cosmetics, along with the return of older limited skins including Youngblood and Voidwalker. The Thrillseekers event will begin in Apex Legends on July 13 and finishes on August 3.

Marvel Studios And Warner Bros’ DC Films Are Skipping San Diego Comic-Con @ Home

San Diego Comic-Con @ Home will be missing two giant presences once again this year. Both Disney’s Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.’ DC Films will be skipping out on the festivities, Deadline reports.

For Marvel Studios, it’s all about the D23 Expo and those Disney Investor Days. Especially since the pandemic began, Marvel has shifted many of its announcements to those events, with the December 2020 Investor Day revealing a long list of titles and details for upcoming Marvel Studios projects. DC Films, meanwhile, has shifted much of that news to its DC Fandome event, which will have its second annual event in October of this year. Last year’s event featured teasers and panels for things like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Black Adam, and The Batman.

Warner Bros. and other parts of DC will still show up for the event. Deadline notes that Warner Bros. TV will have DC’s Legends of Tomorrow at the virtual convention, as well as word that DC Publishing will appear. There’s no word yet on whether Sony will be bringing Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, or the four-times-delayed Mobius to the show.

While the standard in-person Comic Con is canceled for the year, San-Diego Comic Con@Home runs from July 23-25. The organization is also holding an in-person event called Comic-Con Special Edition in November. DC Fandome kicks off on October 16, 2021. Disney has not yet announced dates for its Investor Days; Disney Investor Day 2019 was in April 2019, and 2020’s was in December–so it could be any time. The D23 Expo, meanwhile, will return next year, from September 9 – 11, 2022.

Battlefield 2042 is bringing some of the biggest maps in Battlefield history. In this video, we take a look back at the 12 largest Battlefield locations of all time, like Dragon Valley from Battlefield 2, Bandar Desert from the Armored Kill DLC, and even the Halvoy battle royale map.

Battlefield has a rich variety of multiplayer maps from its humble beginnings in Battlefield 1942, all the way to the massive Firestorm battle royale map in Battlefield V. DICE senior designer Niklas Åstrand put out a chart on Twitter that listed every Battlefield map in existence ranked by their size. In this video we’re breaking down the top 12 largest Battlefield maps of all time.

With Battlefield 2042 reveals coming at EA Play Live on July 22nd, and a renewed interest in Battlefield 4, we will be covering the series including the teased Hazard Zone mode and expected alpha and beta dates, so definitely stay tuned!
