What’s New To Netflix This Week: Movies, TV, And Originals (US)

It’s a brand-new week, and that means some more movies and TV shows are headed to Netflix this week. There is plenty coming to the service you’ll want to check out, including a mockumentary starring a Stranger Things star.

You’re going to want to keep the Netflix original Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein on your radar this week. The mockumentary follows David Harbour as he dives into his father’s legacy, which involved a poor stage production of Frankenstein that was made for television. Throughout his travels, he discovers his father’s troubled past, including a rivalry with a younger actor. It’s obvious aspects of this Netflix original ape the final years of director Orson Welles, who had an interesting fall from grace. Overall, Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein looks pretty hilarious, and you’ll want to check it out this week. To get a closer look, check out the trailer.

Speaking of comedy, there’s a whole new batch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee where Jerry Seinfeld takes comedians, puts them in his car, and they get coffee together. The title couldn’t be more self-explanatory. It may be a simple show, but Seinfeld’s interview series has been an a ton of fun since its online debut years ago.

Also headed to Netflix on Friday is Season 4 of Queer Eye. Once again, the guys will take the time to help someone in need by making their lives better by giving them the tools they need to succeed in their personal lives. It will undoubtedly be uplifting and emotional throughout the new season.

PlayStation Classic Price Drops Even Further, Now Available For $20 (US Only)

The PlayStation Classic’s price continues to freefall. Best Buy is currently offering the slimmed-down retro console for only $20 USD. That looks like the lowest it’s ever been. Go to Best Buy’s website here to buy one or learn more.

The PlayStation Classic released in December 2018 at $100 USD. Presumably in response to lower-than-expected sales, various retailers cut the price quickly and deeply.

Best Buy’s deal is the best out there, it seems. Amazon, Walmart, and GameStop are selling the PlayStation Classic for $40 USD, while Target has it for $60 USD.

The PlayStation Classic is a retro plug-and-play console in the style of Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classics. It features 20 classic PlayStation games into the box, including Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, and Final Fantasy VII. The console features an HDMI connection and two wired controllers.

GameSpot’s PS Classic review expressed a series of disappointments, but, at only $20 USD, you might finally be compelled to jump in.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Is No. 1 Again, As Its Global Box Office Reaches $847 Million

The latest weekend box office numbers are in, and Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home was No. 1 at the box office for a second week in a row. According to Entertainment Weekly, the film pulled in $45.3 million at the US/Canada box office over the July 12-14 weekend.

That’s down 51 percent from Week 1 where it posted $92.58 million over its first three days. So far, after 13 days in theatres, Far From Home is up 22 percent in box office revenue compared to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Far From Home made a further $100 million from overseas movie markets this weekend, pushing the superhero movie’s total global haul to $847 million. That’s a strong start, given that Homecoming made $880 million for its entire box office run; Far From Home is closing in.

Toy Story 4 landed at No. 2 this weekend with $20.7 million. It’s now made $346 million in the US/Canada and $424 million overseas for a total of around $771 million worldwide.

Also on the charts is Stuber, the action-comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista. It made $8 million to finish No. 4. Its release is notable because it’s the first R-rated Disney movie since 2013’s The Fifth Estate. The movie was originally set up at Fox, but Disney inherited it when it acquired the majority of Fox’s entertainment assets.

July 12-14 US/Canada Box Office

  1. Spider-Man: Far From Home — $45.3 million
  2. Toy Story 4 — $20.7 million
  3. Crawl — $12 million
  4. Stuber — $8 million

Veronica Mars Review: This Is How Not To Revive A Beloved Show

What a long and strange trip it’s been for Veronica Mars. After first debuting in 2004, the show’s initial three-season run was split between two networks (UPN and The CW) before it was ultimately canceled with a cliffhanger ending in 2007. Cut to seven years later, when a movie continuation was released by Warner Bros (after being largely funded by fans via Kickstarter), followed by a series of novels and a comedy web series that lasted all of two months before ending.

Now the series is back, thanks to a revival on Hulu. A brand new season following the no-longer-a-teen detective Veronica Mars premieres on the streaming service on July 26. Is it worthy of the very vocal fanbase that has kept interest in the series alive for 15 years, though?

No, it’s not. This isn’t the Veronica Mas you know and love. Instead, it’s a toxic nightmare that exists in the husk of the old show that makes me–a fan of the series since the first episode aired on UPN–hope that it’s never brought back again.

The problems with the new Veronica Mars are easy to miss at first, especially since the show looks mostly the same. The major players are there, with Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring joining Bell as series regulars, playing her dad Keith and her on-again/off-again boyfriend Logan, respectively. And familiar faces are scattered throughout the episodes, including sporadic appearances by Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Francis Capra (Weevil), Dick (Ryan Hansen), Max Greenfield (Leo), and far too many more to name.

Once you dig past the surface, though, these episodes feel all wrong, and it all starts with the rocky relationship between Veronica and Logan. As always, it’s not the healthiest. The big difference between this take on Veronica and Logan and where we’ve seen them in the past, though, is that it’s not Logan making the relationship incredibly unhealthy; it’s Veronica. In the new season, she’s become fixated on the troubled and sociopathic person Logan was, rather than the adjusted and happy person he’s striving to become through therapy. It makes her the toxic ingredient in a relationship that was always potentially poisonous for both characters.

This is one of the new season’s biggest sins. In the past, rooting for Veronica was never difficult, even when she made questionable choices. In the end, she was always trying to do what was best, or at the very least, wasn’t acting out in an attempt to harm others. This new Veronica exists in a space where she seemingly isn’t happy unless the person she loves most is miserable. In the story of her relationship with Logan, she’s the villain. To be clear, she’s somehow worse than the guy who produced bum fight videos as a teenager.

Trying to evolve Logan into a well-rounded human is a wise call for the series and something that should have been done much earlier, when he became the ongoing love interest for Veronica. Doing so at the expense of the titular character, though, is a mistake that is hard to bounce back from.

The other main relationship in Veronica’s life, the one she shares with father Keith, isn’t as bad as it is completely strange. At first, it’s exciting to see more of the father/daughter banter that drove their scenes in the original series, and the duo of Bell and Colantoni still has great chemistry. However, it doesn’t take long to realize that the dynamic between these two characters hasn’t evolved one iota since Veronica was 16 years old, which is very odd. Teenagers and adults in their 30s have different relationships with their parents, and that’s something that probably should have been reflected in their interactions. Still, it’s hard not to love Colantoni’s Keith. He remains TV’s coolest dad.

There are also a handful of new characters in the mix, including ones played by Patton Oswalt and JK Simmons. Both actors appear in recurring roles, as a pizza delivery person and an associate of “Big Dick” Casablancas (remember him?), respectively. Izabela Vidovic plays a teenager named Maddy that seems to have the same instincts Veronica did as a teenager. The actress, who has appeared in episodes of Supergirl and iZombie, shines in her role as a young girl who loses a loved one and looks for her own brand of justice.

Let’s talk about the story, though. My biggest issues with the new season center on how the characters fans have grown to love are used–or barely used, in the case of Wallace. And while a great plot might be able to salvage that, the mystery on display in this new season is messy and confusing because the writers try to do way too much in only eight episodes.

The main storyline revolves around a series of bombings terrorizing the citizens of Neptune during the coveted Spring Break season the town relies upon–something that has never been mentioned in the franchise before. As is usual with this franchise, there are a number of twists and turns that unfold as Veronica attempts to figures out who’s behind the bombings. While some of those twists may keep you briefly engaged, there are others that are completely unnecessary. If they don’t serve the story, they have no business being there.

There are also several branching subplots. One deals with a Mexican drug cartel, while another with the never-ending class warfare in Neptune. Then there’s the aforementioned Maddy’s quest for vengeance, a subplot in which Veronica makes a new friend, and there’s even some time dedicated to the internal politics of a conspiracy theory club’s meetings. In the end, it’s just too many stories to try to tell in eight episodes, especially when creator Rob Thomas and the show’s creative team is also dedicating large amounts of time to Veronica and Logan’s relationship as well as a side story about Keith’s health.

As with many revivals, there’s also a parade of cameo appearances, some of which are tied to the ongoing plots and others that happen for no rhyme or reason. They’re fun to see in the moment, but they happen too late in the season, so any excitement at seeing those characters is lost amidst trying to stay on top of various concluding plots.

In the end, this is Veronica Mars in name, but feels like a season of the show that isn’t meant to appeal to the fans who have yearned for more. Back in September 2018, Thomas tweeted a message to fans about the revival, which hinted at that. “I will say this: the movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn’t going to be,” he wrote. “Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.”

No Caption Provided

He’s right. This is, at its base, an eight-episode story about a detective trying to solve a case. And sometimes the way she goes about it might remind you of Veronica in years past. However, when looked at in that light, it’s a mediocre story on its own, due to the show’s insistence on doing too much in a mere eight episodes. As for his insistence that this isn’t about nostalgia, outside of the innumerable cameo appearances–all of which are for nostalgia’s sake–that’s a fair statement to make. Not because the new season is trying to be something new, though. Instead, it’s because the way the titular character is written often makes her feel like a stranger.

It’s possible that, should Thomas and Bell decide to run one more lap with the property, Veronica Mars could return to some form of its former glory. Figuring out how to rebound from this season, however, might be too big of a mystery for even Veronica to crack.

Veronica Mars Season 4 premieres July 26 on Hulu. The first three seasons are also available on the streaming service.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Writers Answer Burning Questions In Spoiler Interview

Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theatres now. It picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and as such, it deals with the fallout of that film and The Snap, and much more.

Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommars spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about some of the key moments and burning questions about Far From Home and some of its wider implications. This video is FULL of huge spoilers about Far From Home and the entire MCU, so you will want to have seen Far From Home before watching this video.

Far From Home has been a massive success at the box office; it’s made $847 million worldwide so far, after just two weeks in theatres. A sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the film stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck/Mysterio. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders return as Nick Fury and Maria Hill, while Zendaya stars as MJ.

Given how Far From Home ends, a third new Spider-Man film is surely on the way. In fact, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently told Fandango that the next Spider-Man will probably tell a Peter Parker story that has “never been done before on film.”

Watch Dogs Legion Is Crowdsourcing Music From Fans Via Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Media Company

Ubisoft has once again partnered with actor Joseph Gordon Levitt’s HitRecord studio for a unique promotion around user-generated content, this time for Watch Dogs Legion. As part of the collaboration, Ubisoft is looking to the community to create music for the open-world game.

HitRecord is asking the community to create 10 songs for Watch Dogs Legion which will play in the game on radio stations and generally throughout the game’s setting in London. As with other HitRecord projects, the songs are likely to be made collaboratively. That is, someone could write a bass line, another person could come up with guitar parts, someone else might lay down the drum beat. Other people can work together on lyrics and overall levels of polish. These are just a few examples; the possibilities, as you can imagine, are vast.

In all cases, HitRecord will pay $2,000 per song, which will be split among the people who contributed to it, and they’ll also have their names put into the game’s credits. People whose work is not selected for Watch Dogs Legion receive no payment.

HitRecord will review all final Watch Dogs Legion musical pieces, and at that time it will also ensure each artist is properly accounted for. After that, HitRecord will made a decision about how much money each contributor should receive for their part in creating the song. This information will be posted to HitRecord’s public site for everyone to see as part of what’s called the “Payment Proposal.” There is then a two-week period when people in the community can comment on the Payment Proposal, and then HitRecord will make its final decision; the first round of payments will go out for creators in January 2020.

More information about payment is available on HitRecord’s website by searching for Watch Dogs Legion here. You can sign up to create music for Watch Dogs Legion here on HitRecord.

HitRecord is looking for songs in the rock, hip hop, electronica, metal, and punk genres, and Ubisoft is seemingly looking for songs that are in some way related to London.

Some people, including game designer Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone, John Wick Hex) are speaking out against this partnership. Specifically, Bithell said he takes issue with the use of “spec work,” which is basically labor done for free with the hope of future payment.

“This sucks. Pay people for their labour. Stop exploiting fans and hobbyists, while devaluing the work of those with the gall to actually expect consistent payment for work done. Do better Ubi, we’re counting on you,” Bithell said.

HitRecord previously partnered with Ubisoft for a similar user-generated content program for Beyond Good & Evil 2. People also voiced their concerns about that “spec work,” and Gordon-Levitt responded by saying the controversy was due in part to people not understanding how HitRecord works.

“Honestly, this concern was sorta painful to hear,” he said in a post on Medium. “It’s not at all how I think of our community’s creative process. I do think that part of this disconnect is simple misinformation.”

Watch Dogs Legion launches in March 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It is a super-ambitious game due in part to the main hook that you can control basically anyone in the game. Check out the video embedded above to learn more.

Madden 20 Ratings: Here Are The Four 99-Rated Players

The Madden 20 ratings reveal continues. Following EA’s announcement of all the highest-rated rookies, the company has now revealed Madden 20’s four 99-rated players. These are the best players in the game, and that’s before factoring in the new X-Factor super-abilities.

The four 99-rated players in Madden 20 (at launch) include Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins, Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald, Seattle Seahawks ILB Bobby Wagner, and Chicago Bears OLB Khalil Mack. These ratings, and those of everyone else in the game, can and most likely will change over the course of the real NFL season, depending on on-field performance.

Madden 20’s new X-Factor system grants highly rated players super-abilities that can be used at key moments, and these 99-rated players all have them. As Pasta Padre reports, “Hopkins wins aggressive catches against single coverage. Donald can place pressure on the QB even while still engaged in a block. Wagner gets tighter coverage and a higher chance of picking off a pass on contested catches. Mack’s pass rush leads to quicker block shedding.”

The rest of Madden 20’s ratings will be revealed throughout July leading up to the game’s release at the end of the month. Keep check in back with GameSpot for more.

Madden 20 launches on August 2 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
