Underworld Ascendant Review – Going Under

Ultima Underworld was a game ahead of its time. A first-person action-RPG released in 1992, it foreshadowed the kind of creative problem-solving sandbox that would later be popularized through Deus Ex, Bioshock, and Dishonored. The legacy of Ultima Underworld is a design approach that prioritizes player-authored experiences. It was, essentially, the immersive sim that first asked the questions: Do you want to fight your way in? Sneak your way in? Or set off a chain reaction of chaotic, physically simulated interactions and emergent gameplay your way in?

Crowdfunded via Kickstarter and then signed by publisher 505 Games, Underworld Ascendant was first pitched as a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld developed by a veteran team featuring several people who worked on the original, most notably its lead designer Paul Neurath.

Unfortunately, far from a tribute to an influential classic, the result is both a crushing disappointment for Underworld fans and a genuinely bad game in its own right. Ascendant is riven with technical glitches. Every player-empowering feature is undone by a series of bafflingly ill-conceived design choices. And wherever you go your progress is constantly chafed by an all-pervading lack of refinement.

The story, for what it’s worth, tells an oblique tale of warring gods and carries only tenuous links to the original Underworld games. You play as a familiar chosen one burdened with the sole responsibility of saving the world from imminent catastrophe. The game’s primary antagonist bellows his ghostly threats at the beginning of each new area as another hour ticks by on the doomsday clock, but it’s all bluster. Nothing about the world feels imperiled until the game over screen descends and you’re left feeling bemused rather than defeated.

One of Ultima Underworld’s great strengths was its sense of place. The Stygian Abyss of its subtitle was a multi-level, interconnected dungeon populated by diverse, warring tribes who observed what felt like distinct cultural practices. Ascendant’s version of this is composed of seven discrete levels whose haphazard design (here’s a swamp, inside a fort, inside a volcano) obliterates any suggestion of internal consistency and a huge but empty hub area that is so tiresome to traverse it becomes genuinely frustrating to return to between missions.

Again unlike the original game, which let you wander freely throughout the dungeon and pick up quests from its inhabitants, Ascendant takes a more modern and compartmentalized approach. There’s a job board in the hub from which you select one of four missions before you step through a portal to the relevant location. Critical path missions require you to find the abyssal key lost in each of the seven worlds, but other missions–each set by one of three factions with whom you can gain favor–may have you kill a particular enemy or collect a number of a specific item. You can only accept one mission at a time, however, so there’s a lot of trekking back and forth between hub and dungeon level. And, oddly, any mission that asks you to collect items will ignore any of said items already in your possession and force you to collect fresh ones instead.

None of the missions are complex and all ultimately boil down to entering the dungeon, fighting or sneaking your way to a certain spot, picking up or killing what you need, and legging it back to the nearest portal to warp to the hub. There are no NPCs to talk to, no conversations to have, no story choices to make, nothing but a bunch of what feel like procedurally-generated fetch quests delivered over and over again. If you recall the random quests given to you by the various Jarls throughout Skyrim, that’s pretty much the entire game here–except repeated over seven static dungeon levels instead of spread across a whole seamless continent.

The closest Ascendant comes to honoring Underworld’s legacy is in how it affords players the ability to customize their playing style. During character creation, there is no choice of class as such, but once you begin earning “memora” you can purchase skills on a tree with three clusters of branches representing the typical Fighter, Mage, and Thief archetypes. Of course, you’re free to mix and match these skills to tailor your character’s strengths. Maybe you’re an axe-wielding fighter who has also mastered healing magic? Or perhaps you’d rather dash from shadow to shadow and avoid enemies altogether?

In a nice touch, spells aren’t simply a replacement for weapons, but are better suited to the more cerebral player who wants to use the environment to their advantage. One spell lets you create a ball of fire, for example, but it’s not a typical fireball that you hurl at an enemy; it’s instead used to set other things on fire to, say, collapse the walkway that enemy was standing on, or more mundanely, burn down a fence that was blocking your way. The skill tree is flexible and allows you to craft a character that reflects the way you want to play, and leaves plenty of room to experiment with alternative play styles should you ever want to roll a new character.

The chances of doing that are slim, sadly. Underworld Ascendant isn’t just a bare-bones action-RPG, it’s also full of bugs and glitches and carries a really weird save system. I’ve encountered glitches that I’d classify as trivial: frequent gaping, untextured holes in the world geometry; lines of dialogue repeating on loop until you leave the area; getting stuck momentarily on a staircase; struggling to get out of a knee-deep pool of water because the current is absurdly strong; standing too close to a chest when opening it and having the physics fling you across the room. These issues, and many more, I can cope with. They’re irritating, sure, but they’re not game-breaking.

But the bugs become game-breaking when, for example, your character gets trapped between two bits of geometry and the only way out is to reload. Or when you can no longer use your bow even though you still have loads of arrows equipped. Or when you can actually use your bow and see the arrow shoot across the world but it seemingly passes right through the enemy without doing any damage. Or when an enemy spots you and simply runs into a corner and keeps trying to run through a wall while you attack it from behind until it dies. Or when you pull a lever and a rolling spike trap vanishes from the world but is still actually there and kills you. Or when an enemy gets caught in a cycle of jumping in the air and throwing a smoke bomb at its feet. These issues, and many more, are ones I can’t cope with.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

But perhaps most crucially of all, I can’t cope with the save system. To begin with, you cannot save wherever you like. You can save whenever you like, but loading this save will see you restart from the beginning of the level with your inventory intact but any changes to the level reset. You can, however, plant a tree sapling at certain points throughout a level to act as a respawn point if you die, similar to the Vita-Chambers in Bioshock. This would be okay if Underworld Ascendant was a run-based game where you’re primarily interested in how far you can get and what loot drops. But it’s not. It’s a mission-based game where you’re exploring a level for upwards of an hour each time, trying to complete a specific objective. You’re already revisiting the same level over and over again by virtue of having to return to the hub to cash in a mission and pick up the next. Having to restart a level from the beginning each time you load a save is just adding insult to injury.

For many players, especially the time-poor, the save system alone will be enough to render Underworld Ascendant unplayable. But even if it were addressed, and a more conventional system patched in, it would be impossible to recommend this game to anyone. Framed as a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld, Underworld Ascendant misses the mark with almost every shot, much like my aforementioned hapless archer. At the same time, even freed from the expectations its historical baggage brings, it is a clear failure. The spirit of Ultima Underworld lives on elsewhere.

Fallout 76 Is Already Discounted Significantly

[UPDATE] Walmart’s Black Friday deals are going live momentarily. You can get the game for just $39 in the United States for PS4 and Xbox One.

Here are the product pages: Xbox One, PS4.

The original story is below.

Bethesda’s latest big game, Fallout 76, launched last week, and it’s already seeing a major discount. The game is marked down to just $40 USD/£40/$73 AUD on Xbox Live right now, which is 33 percent off its normal pricing for each region. The deal is good through November 27.

Fallout 76 remains at full price in all regions on the PlayStation Store, while the PC edition sold through Bethesda.net also continues to be sold at the standard price. GameStop will have Fallout 76 for only $40 USD for PS4 and Xbox One on Black Friday, with the Tricentennial edition reduced to $60 USD. A PC edition bundled with a Yeti mic will go for $100. You can find out more about how to save money on Fallout 76 on Black Friday in GameSpot’s coverage here.

NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella openly wondered on Twitter if Fallout 76 might win the dubious honor of the quickest time to discount after launch. Games like Mass Effect: Andromeda, Battleborn, and Metal Gear Survive were discounted not long after launch, too.

The discount suggests that Fallout 76 is not performing so well commercially, but that’s only speculation at this point. It’s also notable that the game is being marked down just ahead of Black Friday. Games released so close to Black Friday typically are not discounted.

Bethesda hasn’t made any announcements about Fallout 76’s commercial performance. By comparison, back in 2015, Bethesda quickly heralded Fallout 4‘s massive release by announcing the game shipped 12 million copies and drove $750 million in revenue after just one day.

GameSpot’s full Fallout 76 review is coming up soon. For now, you can read editor Edmond Tran’s Fallout 76 impressions here, an excerpt for which is available below.

“Fallout 76 attempts to pull off some significantly new ideas for the series, but with few exceptions, they notably diminish many aspects of the game,” Tran wrote. “Multiplayer is fun, but it’s not an ideal way to enjoy questing, and the shooting mechanics aren’t strong enough to make combat-heavy activities enjoyable for long periods. Things feel better as a solo experience, but the lack of in-universe characters makes becoming emotionally invested in the world and your goals difficult.”

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Adds Another Iconic Hero Next Week

Star Wars: Battlefront II might not have had the best launch, but EA and developer DICE continue to support the multiplayer shooter with new content. The next big update is coming next week, and it adds one of the Star Wars franchise’s biggest names.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is coming to Battlefront II on November 26. In terms of his abilities, Obi-Wan wields a lightsaber that he can use to deflect other lightsabers and blasters. And because he has a bigger stamina pool than other characters, he can deflect oncoming attacks more effectively.

Obi-Wan also has an ability called All-Out Push. This releases a “powerful Force blast” directly in front of him that damages enemies and psychically pushes them backwards. You can hold down the All-Out Push button to increase the ability’s range and power.

Another of Obi-Wan’s abilities is Defensive Rush, which sees Obi-Wan pushing forward fast while swinging his lightsaber and deflecting attacks and damaging oncoming enemies. Obi-Wan also has an ability called Restrictive Mind Trick, which disrupts all enemy abilities. Additionally, it prevents players from dodging.

Obi-Wan also has a number of Star Cards that players can use to buff their statistics. Some of these include Jedi Resilience (increases health generation), Jedi General (regains 20 health after defeating enemy), and Think It Over (increases the time of Restricted Mind Trick effects on enemies). You can see a full rundown of Obi-Wan’s Star Cards here on the Battlefront website.

Some of Obi-Wan’s voice lines include “Let the negotiations begin” and the wonderful “You want to go home and rethink your life.” He’ll also say, “Ugh–like bathing in a lake of venom-mites” and “Hello there.”

There are two different versions of Obi-Wan at launch. His default is based on his appearance from Episode III, while a second one shows him in his Jedi robes. That one costs 40,000 credits or 1,000 Crystals, and it’ll arrive sometime in December.

Looking ahead, Battlefront II will add another new character, Dooku, in January 2019, while Anakin is coming in February alongside an unannounced new game mode. Later that year, DICE will add even more content to Battlefront II, but it hasn’t been announced yet.

Obi-Wan comes to Battlefront II in the Battle for Geonosis update, and DICE will share more details about everything coming in the patch next week, so check back later for that.

Pokemon Go December Community Day Announced, Features Every Previous Pokemon

Pokemon Go developer Niantic has shared the first details on the game’s next Community Day, but this one will be a little different from previous events. Rather than taking place on a single day, as most Community Days have, the next event will run for an entire weekend and give players another chance to capture all of the previously featured Pokemon.

The special Community Day weekend kicks off Friday, November 30, at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET and runs until 11 PM PT on December 2 (2 AM ET on December 3). During this time, Pikachu, Eevee, Dratini, Beldum, and all of the other Pokemon that were featured during a previous Community Day will reappear in greater numbers. Likewise, you’ll have another opportunity to learn the special event-exclusive moves that were available during past Community Days.

No Caption Provided

On top of bringing back all of the previous featured Pokemon, Niantic is offering a handful of in-game bonuses during the Community Day weekend. As with a typical event, these will only be available during a three hour window of time, which will vary by region. This time, the bonuses include double the normal amount of XP and Stardust for capturing Pokemon, as well as double Incubator effectiveness. You can see when these will be live in each region below.

Niantic hosted the first Community Day back in January, and since then, the developer has held a new event for the game each month. Unlike other real-world Pokemon Go events, these typically only run for three hours, during which time you can find increased spawns of that month’s featured Pokemon. You can also learn a special event-exclusive move if you meet a certain criteria before the event ends. You can check out our guides for all of the previous Community Day events below for more details on how to get these moves.

In addition to the upcoming Community Day, a new Legendary Pokemon is now available in Go. Cresselia, the Legendary Psychic-type introduced in the Gen 4 games Diamond and Pearl, will appear in Raid Battles until December 18. Niantic also recently rolled out a Special Research questline that revolves around the new Mythical Pokemon Meltan.

Pokemon Go Community Day Bonus Schedule

  • Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India: December 1, 2018, 10 AM – 1 PM UTC
  • The Americas and Greenland: December 1, 2018, 11 AM – 2 PM PST
  • Asia-Pacific: December 2, 2018, 12 PM – 3 PM JST

Fallout 76 Update Starts Fixing The Game’s Many Bugs; Patch Notes Released

Bethesda has announced a new update for Fallout 76. The patch makes several improvements to the RPG’s performance and stability, and also fixes numerous bugs in the game.

The new update resolves certain gameplay and performance issues, and further stabilizes the Fallout 76 game client and servers. Additional patches have been made for the Xbox One version of the game–where certain menus could cause in-game instability.

In terms of bug fixes, most of the update addresses issues with combat. An issue where certain enemies were able to chase players further than intended has been fixed, as has a glitch that prevented Ghoul and Scorched Officers from dropping nuke codes upon being killed. For PvP play, you’ll now see the correct cap reward whether you’re seeking revenge or someone else is hunting you down. Respawning after dying in PvP play will now correctly clear your hostile status towards other players if you don’t click the “Seek Revenge” option.

Play Rainbow Six Siege’s Wind Bastion Update Right Now On PTR; Patch Notes Released

Ubisoft has announced the full list of changes coming to Rainbow Six Siege in the Operation Wind Bastion update. The release of Wind Bastion marks the start of Siege’s Year 3, Season 4, which is the final season of 2018. You can try Operation Wind Bastion’s new map and Operators on the PC version’s test servers right now.

The biggest changes coming to Siege in Operation Wind Bastion are two new Operators and an additional multiplayer map. Nomad is the new Attacker Operator, whose airjab launcher allows her to send Defenders flying through the air out of cover or through walls. Kaid is the new Defender Operator, whose electroclaws can electrify multiple reinforced walls and hatches, as well as barbed wire and deployable shields from a distance–which makes him seem massively overpowered. The new map, called Fortress, offers numerous roof access points for Attackers, as well as several staircases and ladders for Defenders to set up traps and choke points.

Operation Wind Bastion also includes additional weapon skins and a headgear bundle. Shop navigation will also be updated to let you see weapons in fullscreen and buy new items directly from the News tab. Five older Operators are also receiving balancing changes. Mute, Clash, and Smoke are being buffed, while Lesion and Zofia are being nerfed. The full list of changes can be read in Operation Wind Bastion’s patch notes, but we’ve outlined the highlights below.
