Quiet Place 2 Director John Krasinski Originally Said No To The Sequel, Teases Third Movie

2018’s A Quiet Place was a big hit; it made a lot of money and was a critical success. But director and star John Krasinski wasn’t enamored with the idea of making a sequel.

Krasinski told Screen Rant that he had no plans to make a sequel. In fact, he said no when he was first approached about it over concerns that it would be seen as a cash grab. But Krasinski eventually agreed to make a sequel because he came up with an idea that he latched onto. The sequel plays with the idea that parents tell their children they can keep them safe, when they know in reality they cannot. This idea felt organic to Krasinsk, and it’s why he agreed to get behind the camera again for A Quiet Place II, which opens this weekend after a 14-month delay due to the pandemic.

“I had no intention of doing a sequel because I’m an audience member first, before a director, writer, actor. When I see sequels, a lot of the time I do the eye roll and go, ‘Oh man, it’s just a cash grab studio kind of move. It’s not going to be nearly as good as the first.’ And I didn’t want that to happen, so I just said no,” he explained. “And what happened was I had this organic, tiny idea and it was about Millie. And the idea was if [Emily Blunt] was the lead of the movie not just because it’s cool to have [Blunt] be the lead of the movie, but she’s actually the continuation of the metaphor in the first movie. So if the first movie is about the promise you make to your kids that will inevitably be broken and everybody knows it, except your kids, that if you stay close I can keep you safe forever.”

“When that promise is broken I think that’s what growing up really is,” he added. “So if the first movie is a love letter to my kids from me, what I thought it meant to be a parent, this one is a hopeful sort of futuristic dream that I have that my kids will be this courageous, this optimistic, this hopeful, no matter how dark life gets, that they can still light a candle and try to soldier on.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Krasinski doubled down on these comments, saying he had “no intention” of making a Quiet Place sequel “because I didn’t think that I could come up with anything as organic as the first one was to me and certainly nothing as personal as the first one was to me.”

Krasinski also spoke about the potential for a third Quiet Place film, saying the sequel contains some Easter eggs that might allude to what happens in a third movie.

“We even went so far as to put in a couple Easter eggs, so that if I did do a third one, they would connect back to the second one,” he said.

Krasinki isn’t in charge of the Quiet Place series from an executive-level position, as that power resides with Paramount. And he acknowledges that if the franchise continues in the future, he’s happy to have someone else take over directing duties.

“Even though I’m the guy who did the first two, I won’t be the guy or girl who does the last one or the last two. I know that,” he said “At the end of the day, this world is really fun to explore. This is an amazing sandbox to play in, and whether or not I’m the guy to do any more of them or how many more of them, I don’t know.”

A Quiet Place spin-off from Mud director Jeff Nichols is already in the works, but very little is known about it.

GameSpot’s A Quiet Place II review scored the film an 8/10.

“A Quiet Place Part II is the best kind of horror sequel–one that honors the elements that made the first so successful, but instead of simply repeating the formula, finds new ways to keep the story fresh and the scares effective,” reviewer Dan Auty said.

Here Is Literally 2 Seconds Of Uncharted Movie Footage

After years getting stuck in development hell and multiple delays due to COVID, the Uncharted movie is finally coming in February 2022, and now Sony has released the first video footage. Don’t get too excited, however, as the footage is limited to literally two seconds.

As part of Sony’s latest corporate strategy meeting (via Collider), the technology giant gave an update on all of its business segments, including Sony Pictures. At 1:32-1:34 in the video below, we see Mark Wahlberg as Sully and Tom Holland as Nathan Drake dressed up for what looks like a fancy cocktail party. It’s hard to know what’s going on with such little context, but the pair don’t seem to be very friendly at this moment in time.

Sony Pictures Entertainment lawyer Sofia Stanley says through voiceover as the segment runs, “To work for Sony Pictures is to constantly strive to tell great stories. Important stories. Stories that connect audiences to the human experience.”

Wahlberg does not have Sully’s trademark mustache in this footage, nor did he in the new image released earlier this week. But the film might show off when Sully decided to grow facial hair because another image shows Wahlberg with a very Sully-like stache.

In addition to Wahlberg and Holland, the Uncharted movie stars Antonio Banderas in an unspecified role, while Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy) is lined up to play Chloe Frazer. Tati Gabrielle from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina plays Braddock.

The Uncharted movie wrapped filming last October. It’s directed by Ruben Fleischer, who previously directed the Zombieland movies and Venom.

Sony Pictures currently has at least 10 new film/TV adaptations in the works based on PlayStation games. Some of the others include the Ghost of Tsushima movie from John Wick’s Chad Stahelski and the Twisted Metal TV show from the writers of Deadpool.

Dragon Quest X: Offline Revealed, But It’s Not Confirmed For A Western Release Yet

Dragon Quest X has long been one of Square Enix’s most successful online titles, and it’ll be getting a spin-off next year in Dragon Quest X: Offline, which will feature cuter visuals and other changes which will be revealed at a later date.

“As you might have guessed from the title, this is a new version of [Dragon Quest X Online] that you don’t need an internet connection to play,” producer Takumi Shiraishi said during this week’s Dragon Quest 35th anniversary stream, as translated by Gematsu. “We’re looking to create an easy-to-pick-up, easy-to-play standalone version of Dragon Quest X–and as you saw in the promotional video, one with a completely different version style to its online cousin. With these super-deformed, pixel art visuals, we’re aiming for a style that’s as nostalgic as it is charming.”

At this point, Dragon Quest X: Offline has only been confirmed for a release in Japan in 2022. There was no word on whether an international launch may be coming, but its online predecessor has never been released in the West. That was reiterated once again by producer Koji Aoyama’s section within the live stream, which had text in the corner that simply read, “There are no plans for a worldwide release,” in reference to Dragon Quest X.

There’s a lot more Dragon Quest on the horizon, as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is in development and will receive a worldwide release. This latest game in the core series being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and is being directed by Takeshi Uchikawa, who helmed Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

Dragon Quest Treasures and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake were also revealed, and both games will be receiving a global release. No specific release dates for any of the new games were announced.

If you’re on Xbox, now’s also a good time to check out Dragon Quest Builders 2, which was recently added to Xbox Game Pass and is a more relaxing spin-off from the main series of RPG games.

New PS5 Model Seemingly Registered – But it May Not Be That Different

A new PlayStation 5 model has seemingly been registered, but it might not be all that different from what’s currently being sold today.

This news comes by way of tech specialist and business analyst, Roberto Serrano (via VGC). According to Serrano, a new model of the PS5, known as CFI-1115A, has been found in a new wireless communciation module, M20DAL1, registered by Sony Group Corp. on April 26, 2021.

“This suggests a revision of PS5 is coming sooner or later, already registered on May 23, 2021,” Serrano said, as you can see in their tweet below.

The launch PS5 uses a similar CFI-1XXX model scheme, and the use of CFI-1115A in this new registration suggests the first revision of the PS5 could be on its way. However, don’t necessarily expect a PS5 Pro or Slim model out of this revision.

The documentation reveals that a new wireless module — known as AW-XM501 — is replacing the current J20H100 module in the launch PS5. This translates to a change in antenna gain, according to VGC.

This revised PS5 will have a peak antenna gain of 4.0/3.5dBi, which is an antenna’s decibel isotropic number, when connected to a router on a 2.4GHz signal. This decibel isotropic number determines how much area the antenna signal covers. The higher the number, the more area covered by the antenna’s signal.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/18/is-gambling-with-bitcoin-coming-to-playstation-ign-daily-fix”]

This new 4.0/3.5dBi peak antenna gain on a 2.4GHz router signal is lower than the current 6.0/6.0dBi found in launch PS5s. On a 5GHz router signal, the revised PS5’s peak antenna gain will be 6.0/4.5dBi, which is higher than the launch PS5’s 5.0/3.5dBi peak, according to VGC.

It’s unknown at this time if these changes in peak antenna gain will have any affect on WiFi connection speeds, however, so this revision could amount to a virtually identical PS5 despite a different wireless module.

While waiting to see what this revision turns out to be, check out this story about a Sony patent that might hint at upgraded DualSense controller plans and then read about a patent filed by Sony for a betting service that could accept Bitcoin or in-game items.

Borderlands 3 Cross-Play Update Is Ready, But PlayStation Consoles Are Being Left Out

Cross-play is finally coming to Borderlands 3 for all but one platform. According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, cross-play support for PlayStation consoles had to be removed.

It is not immediately clear why PlayStation consoles had to be left out for the Borderlands 3 cross-play update. In a tweet announcing the update, Pitchford said, “For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove cross-play support for PlayStation consoles.”

However, Borderlands 3’s publisher 2K may not be the main cause of Sony’s consoles being excluded from cross-play. During the Epic vs. Apple trial, documents submitted to the court revealed that Sony would require that developers adding cross-play functionality to their games pay a royalty fee. Sony would calculate this fee based on the popularity of the PlayStation version of the game in question, and how much money it made on the PlayStation Network.

Historically, Sony hasn’t been a fan of cross-play, with Rocket League developer Psyonix saying that the tech giant has been hesitant to allow cross-play on PlayStation consoles. Sony has defended its stance on cross-play by saying it was protecting its userbase. In the time since, Sony has become more lenient with allowing cross-play on PlayStation consoles, with multiple games supporting the feature.

We have reached out to 2K for comment on this situation and will update this story if we get a response.

In other Borderlands 3 news, the game has a new event slated to start today. Players today can tackle the True Trials event for the Trial of Discipline. Until 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET on June 3, the Trial of Discipline boss will have more health and deal more damage, but also reward players with two legendary weapons.

Borderlands 3 is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PS4, PS5, Stadia, and PC. Assumedly, cross-play will be heading to all of those platforms save for the PS4 and PS5.

Call Of Duty Veterans Who Worked On Modern Warfare And Infinite Warfare Leave Infinity Ward

Two prominent Call of Duty developers from Infinity Ward have left the studio to pursue what they are calling a “rare and exciting new opportunity.”

Narrative director Taylor Kurosaki and design director Jacob Minkoff left Infinity Ward earlier this year, though the news is only just becoming public now. “It was an honor to be a part of the studio for the last 7 years and we’re so proud of what we created together with Modern Warfare and Infinite Warfare. We wish the team nothing but the best,” they said in a joint statement.

The statement goes on to explain that Kurosaki and Minkoff are not yet able to announce their next gig, but they remarked that more details should come soon. The joint statement was attributed to both Kurosaki and Minkoff, so they are presumably sticking together for whatever they are working on next.

Before joining Infinity Ward, Minkoff spent years at Naughty Dog where he worked on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, including its acclaimed train level. He was promoted to lead designer for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and The Last of Us.

As for Kurosaki, he also came to Infinity Ward from Naughty Dog. He worked at the Sony studio for more than 10 years as a narrative design lead across a number of projects.

Given their experience, it will be interesting to see where Kurosaki and Minkoff land next. The statement says only that they are leaving Infinity Ward and not Activision overall, though that could be a possibility as well. We’ll report back with more information as it’s announced.

2021’s new Call of Duty game is coming from Sledgehammer Games, the developer of Call of Duty: WWII. The new game, which is due out this holiday, is rumored to be another WWII game that may be called Vanguard. This game is expected to integrate with Call of Duty: Warzone in some capacity that hasn’t been clarified yet.

Made in Korea: Exclusive Preview of the New Existential Sci-Fi Comic

Image Comics has just launched Made in Korea, a new science fiction series set in a world where biological children are a thing of the past. Instead, becoming a parent is as simple as placing an order, unpackaging your “Proxy,” or synthetic child, and powering them on. The series aims to explore what it means to be a family in this post-biological era, as seen through the eyes of an artificial intelligence named Jesse.

With Made in Korea #1 on store shelves, IGN can exclusively reveal a preview of the second chapter in this six-issue limited series. Get a first look at Made in Korea #2 in the slideshow gallery below:

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”slug=made-in-korea-2-exclusive-preview&captions=true”]

Made in Korea is a collaboration between writer Jeremy Holt (Skip to the End) and artist George Schall (Chasing Echoes). The series is inspired by Holt’s own background as a transracial adoptee, with the goal of exploring themes of identity and belonging and providing a commentary on the Asian American experience. It’s no coincidence the series made its debut during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

“Made in Korea is the story I was born to write, literally and figuratively,” Holt tells IGN. “And it was fate that I crossed paths with George who’s helped me craft a unique take on the AI narrative.”

Made in Korea #1 is available to purchase in print and digitally now. Issue #2 will debut on June 30, 2021.

In other comic book news, Marvel has revealed Jonathan Hickman’s next X-Men series, and Marvel will introduce a brand new version of Darkhawk in August.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Trailer Shows Off The Game’s New Dragon Engine-Powered Upgrades

Virtua Fighter 5 is making a comeback next month on PS4, in a new package that has completely remastered the original game using Yakuza studio Ryu ga Gotoku’s Dragon Engine. If you’re wondering what a 14-year glow-up looks like on a more modern console in comparison to the game’s 2007 release on Xbox 360 and PS3, you can watch a new trailer below that highlights the more detailed character models and stages.

These upgrades have been applied to all 19 fighters, arenas, and cinematics ahead of Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown’s launch on June 1. Not everyone’s a fan of high-definition visuals though, and if you want to take the game all the way back to its arcade roots, there’s an option available for a 1990s graphics mode:

If this looks like your type of game but funds are a bit tight currently, the good news is that Virtua Fighter 5’s upgraded edition will make its day one debut on PlayStation Plus and will also be available through PlayStation Now. As a PS4 game, it’s presumed that it’ll be fully backward compatible with the PS5 console as well.

“This project started as a part of Sega’s 60th Anniversary Celebration; it was made as a gift for our community,” chief producer Seiji Aoki explained to GameSpot just before the game was revealed. “We want as many people to play it as possible. Launching on both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now allows us to offer the definitive Virtua Fighter experience as an essentially ‘free’ game for millions of players around the world, many of whom may just be trying out the series for the first time!”

The rest of June’s PS Plus offerings include cooperative spy adventure Operation Tango and space combat game Star Wars: Squadrons, while the deadline to grab May’s current offerings, Battlefield V, Stranded Deep, and Wreckfest: Drive Hard Die Last, is starting to draw closer.
