Gamescom 2021 Predictions

While we know who will and won’t be at Gamescom, what these companies actually have planned remains a mystery though. That said, we can take an educated guess on what Xbox, Bethesda, and the other attendees might announce based on what they revealed at E3 and any outstanding games we’ve yet to see.

Xbox

Even though we just got two Xbox keynotes at E3, Microsoft still has plenty left to show us with its Gamescom 2021 Xbox Stream on August 24 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST or August 25 at 3am AEST. Even a new trailer for the cadre of new games coming to Xbox this and next year would easily fill up a two-hour showcase. We may see more footage of Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. But what we’d really like to see is more of Contraband and A Plague Tale Reqieum since both games were just revealed with teasers at E3. Also be sure to check out our how to watch the Gamescom 2021 Xbox Stream guide for even more details on the upcoming show.

Sony

Sony was notably absent from Gamescom’s attendee list so we doubt there will be a PlayStation livestream as an official part of Gamescom. However, Sony could surprise us with a State of Play event ahead of the European games conference. Just days before E3 started, Sony dropped extended gameplay of Horizon: Forbidden West. We’ve got our fingers crossed to see something from God of War Ragnarok, Lost Judgement, or an entirely new property for PlayStation. At the very least, Geoff Keighley confirmed in a tweet that we will see extended gameplay of Death Stranding Director’s Cut during Opening Night Live.

Nintendo

Nintendo wasn’t part of last year’s Gamescom’s lineup and it doesn’t seem like it’ll be showing up this year’s either as it has not appeared on the event list of attendees. It’s a real shame since we were hoping to see more of Metroid Dread and Breath of the Wild sequel. We’ve got our fingers crossed that the company still announces a surprise Nintendo Direct.

Bethesda

Besthesda is basically an extension of Xbox’s own official game studios and it has a huge collection of upcoming games we’re hoping to see again at Gamescom. The last Xbox and Bethesda showcase kicked off with a Starfield teaser trailer, that may have also included an Elder Scrolls 6 easter egg, and we’re hoping to see more footage of the game soon. Redfall, the co-op vampire hunting game, could be another Bethesda game will see at Gamescom, too.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft is one of the major game publishers that have announced its Gamescom attendance. We’re likely to see some Far Cry 6 gameplay and hopefully more details about the game’s DLC that will let you play as the series’ villains. Hopefully, there will also be more footage of the upcoming Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, the Avatar game we never thought we’d see.

Future Games Show at Gamescom

Future’s self-titled gaming show from the GamesRadar staff is making its Gamescom debut. The show promises over 40 games from companies like Team17, Koch Media, Tripwire Interactive, and Frontier Developments. It’ll also be co-hosted by the voice actors who played Lady Dimitrescu and the Duke, Maggie Robertson and Aaron LePlante, respectively. The Future Games Show will air on Thursday, August 26 at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm BST or August 27 at 6am AEST.

Konami

Konami has been relatively absent in the video game world for the last few years, but now the publisher is teasing some new announcements for Gamescom 2021. So far Konami has promised new announcements for its recently announced eFootball, the free-to-play football simulation platform, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, which the company calls the most complete Yu-Gi-Oh! game yet.

Optoma HD39HDR Review

We won’t bury the lede: The Optoma HD39HDR is one of the brightest projectors that you can buy for under $1000. But that isn’t all this intriguing new product is capable of. While it does have a few puzzling omissions that are hard to overlook, the HD39HDR features remarkably low input lag and incredibly handy installation features for a price that makes it hard to beat. For anyone searching for an HD projector that works well in virtually every environment without breaking the bank, the HD39HDR gets darn close to being a dream come true.

Specifications

  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Brightness: 4500 ANSI Lumens
  • Contrast Ratio: 50,000:1
  • Input Lag: 8.4ms@120Hz
  • Resolution support: accepts up to 4K (3840 x 2160) input
  • Connections: one HDMI 2.0 input, one HDMI 1.4a input, one VGA output, one VGA input, one 3.5mm audio input, one 3.5mm audio output

Optoma HD39HDR – Design and Features

The HD39HDR adheres to what’s considered to be conventional projector dimensions at this point, with the benefit of being fairly lightweight at just under eight pounds. Essentially, if you wanted to move this projector around the house, or maybe into the backyard for a summer movie night, you won’t break a sweat doing so. The remote follows a similarly minimalistic approach, though this compact controller fits most buttons that the average projector user would need into its design. From dedicated buttons for each individual source to manual keystone correction buttons, it’s a handy remote to have by your side as you adjust settings with the HD39HDR.

On the subject of getting set up, Optoma makes it easy to dial in the most proportionate image possible for your specific space. With options like keystone correction, 1.3x zoom and image shifting capabilities, I was able to match the image nicely with my 120-inch screen without having to place the projector in a precise position in the room. Plus, the HD39HDR has a wall color adjustment that lets you select the color that you’re projecting onto, with options including blackboard, light yellow, light green, light blue, pink, and gray. You can also opt to not choose a wall color at all, which seemed to work the best for the screen I was using to test the projector.

As simple as the HD39HDR is to set up and begin using, it does suffer from an apparent lack of features and a somewhat disappointing lineup of available connections. There’s no WiFi or streaming capabilities built into the HD39HDR – something that competitors like BenQ built into their new gaming projector, the X1300i – meaning you will need to connect your own console or streaming device to access your favorite content. To be fair, streaming sticks are ridiculously cheap these days, and the vast majority of them have faster, more competent operating systems than almost any built-in streaming platform on a projector. It is, however, nice to have an alternative should an external source not be available for whatever reason.

The HD39HDR has two HDMI ports, though the fact that one is HDMI 2.0 and the other is HDMI 1.4 is a small letdown since the latter only supports 4K video frame rates up to 30hz. More unsettling is the collection of audio connections, which is glaringly missing a digital optical output. HDMI may be the easier way to go for audio needs these days, but the digital optical port was always a solid backup, especially for setups that feature older home theater systems or soundbars. The supplied 3.5mm input and output will technically get the job done, but they are far less versatile connections overall than the trusty optical port.

Optoma HD39HDR – Performance

Brightness is the name of the game with the HD39HDR, and boy does it bring it. With 4500 lumens of brightness, it is capable of producing a clear, detailed image regardless of what kind of light it may be competing with in your viewing space. From the middle of the day with sunlight infiltrating my office to late at night watching movies in a darkened room, the HD39HDR consistently delivered an impressively clear, visible image. It can get a little carried away at times, with display modes like Presentation and Bright tending to wash out the colors displayed in the image. But for the most part, the brightness of this projector is a huge asset that sets it apart from others in its price range.

The HD39HDR is a 1080p projector, though it can accept a 4K input and is HDR-10 compatible. While we’d love to get a true 4K projector at this price (maybe one day!), the HD39HDR still produces a solid image given the tools it has to work with. The projector has a 6-segment color wheel (RYGCWB), and it has plenty of opportunities to prove its capabilities while watching HDR content like Netflix’s Life In Color, narrated by none other than David Attenborough. It may not have the color accuracy or magnificent contrast that an OLED panel would offer, but scenes like a sprawling shot through the rainforests of New Guinea were surprisingly vibrant.

Though the HD39HDR’s input lag is on par with more expensive options like the BenQ x1300i (8.4ms@120Hz compared to 8.33ms@120Hz), it’s pretty clear that it wasn’t built to primarily operate as a gaming projector. Make no mistake, you’ll still achieve wonderfully smooth gameplay with input lag that low. But compared to something like the X1300i, which had a trio of gaming modes that adjusted the image to meet the needs of certain types of gameplay, the HD39HDR is a bit less accommodating. Aside from its Enhanced Gaming Mode, the HD39HDR feels more like a balanced projector that handles movies and gaming equally well. Depending on how your usage breaks down, that may or may not be an issue.

Despite the comparative lack of gaming-specific modes, the HD39HDR does give you plenty of ways to play with the picture it’s producing. There’s more standard options like brightness, contrast, and sharpness. And there’s more intricate color settings like color temperature, color matching and RGB gain/bias. Personally, I made a few tweaks to the picture here and there, but was mostly satisfied with the default settings that the HD39HDR came out of the box with. If you’re inclined to dig deep into the image settings, though, Optoma supplied nearly all of the tools to do so.

Optoma says it built a 10-watt speaker into the HD39HDR, and to its credit, it can get fairly loud if you need it to. But the sound is unavoidably hollow which, while not unexpected from a tiny speaker crammed into a projector, doesn’t exactly fill the room with the cinematic sound that such a large image begs for. As with almost every projector, I’d suggest investing in an external audio setup and only using the built-in speaker if absolutely necessary. Your movie nights and gaming sessions will be much more enjoyable because of it.

Gearbox Sets Up Montréal Studio to Work on Borderlands and Brand New Games

Gearbox has announced a new Montréal-based studio that will add 250 jobs to Quebec’s technology sector as it works on further Borderlands content and brand new games.

The new studio is being co-led by industry veterans, Sebastien Caisse and Pierre-Andre Dery. The latter spoke about the exciting new opportunity for Gearbox in a press release, saying, “Building on Gearbox’s long history of creative freedom, we are excited to assemble a new development team to work on the Borderlands franchise and create new IPs in Montréal.”

Whilst details surrounding a new IP from the studio have not yet been confirmed, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford spoke about the company’s desire to add further talent to its existing IPs through the new studio. “The Gearbox Entertainment Company is ambitiously looking both internationally and domestically to grow our creative engine and meet the incredible demand our customers have for talent-crafted experiences with our intellectual property,” said Pitchford.

“Following our successful experience establishing Gearbox Studio Quebec, our investment in a new studio in Montreal creates an exciting new prospect for Montréal-based talent – whether they wish to work on existing Gearbox franchises or help with the creation of new, original ideas.”

While the Montréal-based studio sets to work on further Borderlands content, multiple senior members from the Borderlands 3 development team recently left Gearbox to work on a new project together. Senior producer Christopher Brock, lead mission designer Keith Schuler and art director Scott Kester amongst a number of other Gearbox members are amongst those said to have departed the studios.

Despite a lack of details surrounding future Borderlands game content, the franchise’s movie adaptation finished shooting in June. Details surrounding the film, which will star Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart, have since surfaced including a first look at its take on Claptrap and how its depiction of Krieg will differ slightly from the character’s video game counterpart. For more on the upcoming Borderlands movie, make sure to check out our dedicated page for the film.

The Matrix Resurrections: Lilly Wachowski Explains Why She Didn’t Want to Co-Direct

Lilly Wachowski, the co-director of the original Matrix trilogy, has clarified why she didn’t return to helm the newest entry in the franchise.

Speaking at Showtime’s TCA panel on Wednesday, per The Wrap, Wachowski addressed her lack of involvement in The Matrix Resurrections, explaining that she found the idea of “going backwards” in her career “expressly unappealing” and that she struggled to find the motivation to return to the franchise following some major shifts in her personal life.

“I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before and sort of walk over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling and really the opposite,” Wachowski explained. “Like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes in a way. And I didn’t want to do that.”

Wachowski last worked on a movie with her sister, Lana, who is solo directing the fourth Matrix entry, on Jupiter Ascending in 2015. She admitted that she had felt “completely exhausted” from working back-to-back on Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending and then moving immediately on to the first season of the Netflix series Sense8.

“My world was like falling apart, to some extent, even while I was like, you know, cracking out of my egg. So I needed this time away from this industry,” she said. “I needed to, like, reconnect to myself as an artist. And I did that by going back to school and painting and stuff. And I made that decision. So I started painting that summer with my mom and then Lana got the call from Netflix that they wanted to order up another season. And I said, ‘I can’t do it.'”

Warner Bros. debuted the first official footage of the fourth entry in The Matrix series during its CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday. The studio also officially confirmed that the title of the long-awaited sequel is The Matrix Resurrections. For more about the upcoming sequel, here’s a rundown of everything else that we know about the first Matrix film since 2003.

Hitman 3’s New Gluttony DLC Puts You In A Cape And Has You Kill People In Pig Masks

IO Interactive has announced that the latest installment of its Seven Deadly Sins collection for Hitman 3, titled Gluttony, is launching on August 31.

Indulgence is the theme here, and Agent 47 will be making his way through the Chonqing area filled with NPCs in pig masks, carrying out missions for “the Pig” who can’t really move around much. The new update will bring the Gluttony Gobble Escalation, the Maximalist Shotgun, Bubble Queen Gum pack, and a new gold-trimmed Profligacy suit for Agent 47.

Players can purchase Gluttony and other individual installments for $5 or buy the entire Seven Deadly Sins collection for $30. Gluttony is the fifth sin shown off, with Lust, Pride, Greed, and Sloth making up the previous Hitman 3 updates. The two sins left are Envy and Wrath.

It’s unknown whether there will be more updates to Hitman 3 after all seven of the sins have been covered or if the studio will shift its focus to other projects. IO Interactive currently has a James Bond game in the works right now with the working title Project 007.

Hitman 3 is available on Google Stadia, PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch via Cloud, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Fortnite Celebrates MLK With In-Game March Through Time Mode

Epic Games and Time Studios (of Time Magazine) have teamed up to present the Fortnite March Through Time, a limited-time mode that offers no combat, building, or anything of the usual sort Fortnite is known for. Playing more like an Assassin’s Creed Discovery Tour mode, the Fortnite March Through Time gives players a virtual museum to explore all in celebration of the important work done by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The March Through Time limited-time mode “immerses players in the entirety of Dr. King’s monumental ‘I Have A Dream’ speech and the history surrounding it,” said Epic Games in a blog post. Players who venture into the mode will journey to Washington D.C. circa 1963 where they’ll witness recreations of famous landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial and United States National Mall, where the famous speech was delivered by King almost 58 years ago to the day, August 28, 1963.

Through museum-inspired points of interest and collaborative mini-games, players will experience the virtual exhibit made by Fortnite community members ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr, and YU7A, capturing the exhibit’s theme: “we move forward when we work together.” The mode even includes its own set of challenges, and players who complete the list will earn themselves the free D.C. 63 spray as shown below.

Players who explore the virtual museum will unlock a commemorative spray to be used in-game.

Epic is hoping to open a dialogue in its massive Fortnite community and is urging players to share how Dr. King or another important person in their life has inspired them using the hashtag #FNDC63.

Deathloop Final Preview: What It’s Like To Play

Deathloop is coming on September 14, marking a big exclusive for PlayStation 5 (and oddly enough, published by Microsoft Game Studios). Our own Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James got their hands on the game for a final preview ahead of release.

This was an extended, five-hour preview of the action game from Arkane, so the two have plenty of thoughts on the types of powers they dabbled with, how it feels to actually traverse the mysterious island, and more. Watch their chat below, and for more, check out our Deathloop preorder guide and everything we know.

Now Playing: Deathloop – The Final Preview

Deathloop stars Colt, an assassin caught in a time loop on an island where rich hedonists are holding a never-ending party due to the island’s time loop. As you relive the same time period over and over you’ll learn the habits and rituals of the party-goers and try to break the loop by taking out a list of key targets. But at the same time, he’s being hunted by the only other person who appears to retain knowledge between time loops, an equally capable female assassin named Jules.

Knockout City Is Free For Amazon Prime Subscribers Next Month

September is right around the corner, so a new batch of freebies for Amazon Prime subscribers is almost here. Amazon has unveiled the Prime Gaming lineup for September 2021, and it includes Knockout City, the great action-focused dodgeball game that released earlier this year. Knockout City is joined by six other free games as well as loot for Grand Theft Auto Online, Madden 22, Sea of Thieves, and more popular games.

Knockout City is definitely worth snagging when the new free games lineup goes live on September 1. It earned an 8/10 in our Knockout City review. “Knockout City’s greatest strengths lie in its simplicity, but also in the ways it remixes traditional multiplayer elements to create something distinct,” critic Alessandro Barbosa wrote. “Its easy-going nature and straightforward mechanics reduce the time it takes to feel invested in each match, but it’s really the subtle complexity underneath that keeps the action engaging and compelling over long play sessions.”

In addition to Knockout City, Prime subscribers can claim six other games. Most notably, members can grab another LucasArts classic: Sam & Max Hit the Road. The point-and-click adventure originally released in 1993, but it’s still worth playing all these years later.

You can check out the full list of free games for September below. If you’re new to Amazon Prime, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to claim these games. Once you add them to your library, you get to keep them forever.

Tony Hawk Put His Blood Into Skateboards And They Sold Out Immediately

If you’ve ever tried skateboarding, there’s a good chance that a section of asphalt contains some of your DNA after a bad tumble. Going a step further, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk arranged for his blood to be infused into a limited-edition run of 100 skateboards, which have already sold out. Priced at $500 per board, each deck features a red color scheme that has some of Hawk’s blood mixed into the paint.

As Hawk himself noted, these boards should definitely not be used to extract his DNA from and for the purpose of creating a theme park of clones who perform his signature tricks all day long for customers. “Looking forward to our future collaborations as long as they don’t involve replicants, Hawk wrote in an Instagram post.

Speaking to GameSpot’s sister site CNET, a representative for water company Liquid Death Mountain Water explained how it managed to get its hands on two vials of Hawk’s “donated” blood.

“Tony Hawk is a member of the Liquid Death Country Club,” the representative said. “So he previously sold his soul to Liquid Death via a legally binding contract, meaning the brand technically owns Tony’s blood.”

Some of the proceeds from the sale will go to the non-profit organization 5 Gyres and Hawk’s own organization, The Skatepark Project, which helps underprivileged communities build their own skateparks.

Blood has proven to be a surprisingly effective method for creating unique pieces of memorabilia. Rock band KISS created a stir when the members had their blood drawn and mixed into the printing ink for a 1977 Marvel KISS comic book, and in a more recent example that resulted in public controversy, rapper Lil Nas X teamed up with streetwear company MSCHF to sell Satan Shoes.

Each modified Nike shoe contained a drop of blood provided by MSCHF employees, but the stunt wound up in court when Nike filed a trademark claim against MSCHF and the company voluntarily recalled the shoes back as part of a settlement.

Lil Nas X tweeted after the skateboards went on sale, and suggested that double standards were to blame for the public outrage over his collaboration with MSCHF.
