Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Shutting Down

Longtime strategy guide maker Prima Games is shutting down next year, according to new reports.

Variety reports that a spokesperson for publisher DK said “I can confirm that the decision has been made to no longer commission new Prima Games strategy guides and the U.S.-based imprint will be discontinued in Spring 2019. We are in conversations with the Prima Games team and cannot comment on this further at this point.”

Prima’s three U.S. offices reportedly will be shut down one at a time starting with its Roseville, Calif. location by the middle of this month, according to EGM. The Indianapolis location will close its doors in March 2019 while it’s unknown when the New York City office will be closed.

Tetris Effect Review

You may have played many versions of Tetris, but you’ve probably never played one like Tetris Effect. The latest iteration of the falling-block puzzler comes from Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s Enhance Experience and combines music, sound, vibration, and visuals into something that becomes almost transcendent. It does have a late-game difficulty spike that’s worse for those that aren’t playing in VR, but this is still a masterfully presented new entry in a long-running series.

The main campaign of Tetris Effect is Journey, an engrossing series of connected boards each with their own diverse art style, music, and ruleset. Each board is unique and I was constantly surprised by what they offered. One might see you starting underwater as a beautiful particle-effect whale swims around you, while the next will be a desert landscape with a meandering caravan of camels that, halfway through, transitions to a realistic-looking version of the moon complete with an astronaut tooling around in a lunar vehicle. Some don’t have music at all, instead opting for a soundscape drawn from the sounds of wind. Another had me inadvertently creating a jazz jam with the sound effects created by rotating, moving, and dropping pieces.

Fortnite’s Concurrent Player Count Breaks 8 Million

Fortnite’s concurrent player count has hit a staggering peak of 8.3 million.

Following the rollout of Fortnite’s Korea-only challenges this week, that has players visiting internet cafes, Epic Games Korea’s Sung Chul Park revealed the number in an interview with Inven (via VG247).

It’s an astonishing achievement, particularly when you remember that, back in February, the game hit an all-time high of 3.4 million concurrent players. At that time, it caused some serious server problems for Epic – it seems that the developer’s invested in some backup tech since then.

Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright Team Up for Sci-Fi Love Story

Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright are set to star in the adaptation of Katie Khan’s novel, Hold Back the Stars, a Sci-Fi love story.

As reported by THR, Hold Back the Stars “centers on a man and a woman who revisit memories of their love affair on a utopian Earth while they are trapped in the vast void of space with only 90 minutes of oxygen.”

Boyega, who has played Finn since 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Wright, who portrays Shuri from Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, will star in the film being directed by Mike Cahill, who has lead such films as 2014’s I Origins.

Star Trek: What Happens When a Pulitzer Prize Winner Writes an Episode

Full spoilers follow for this episode.

The second of the Short Treks, “Calypso,” is not only a huge improvement over the first installment, which debuted last month, but also a high watermark for CBS All Access’ Star Trek output in general, which began with the debut of Discovery last year. And it makes its stylish and poetic impact with a story about just two characters, trapped together on a lost ship, neither of whom we’ve ever met before (and quite possibly won’t ever meet again).

Watch the trailer for “Calypso” above.

Scripted by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, from a story by Chabon and Discovery writer Sean Cochran, “Calypso” is on its face a fairly simple story, a 16-minute rethinking of the titular tale from Homer’s The Odyssey, and yet Chabon elevates the material to an almost sublime degree, offering up a lonely hero and a perhaps even lonelier nymph… who happens to be a computer.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Is Everywhere…Even on South Park

Never ones to shy away from a hot pop culture moment, the writers of South Park made Red Dead Redemption 2 the barrel end of the joke on this week’s episode, titled, “Time to Get Cereal.”

The episode is notable not just for Red Dead 2’s inclusion, but also the return of Al Gore (who’s become a bowler in the South Park universe since losing the 2000 presidential election) and ManBearPig, the exactly-what-it-sounds-like demon that Gore warned South Park about back in Season 10. Still, it was the Red Dead Redemption 2 subplot that will likely give gamers the biggest laughs, as Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and the South Park writing team managed to not only make numerous references to Arthur Morgan’s Old West adventure, but they did so in such an accurate way as to make the jokes even funnier. To wit:
