Netflix Warns Against Dangerous New Meme Inspired By Bird Box

The new Sandra Bullock Netflix movie Bird Box has proven to be incredibly popular, but now the streaming giant has issued a warning to viewers about it.

In the film, Bullock and others wear blindfolds so they can’t see the horrors in the world that cause people to kill themselves. In real life, people are blindfolding themselves and doing regular stuff in what’s been labeled the BirdBoxChallenge.

As you’d expect, wearing a blindfold while walking down the street or through the woods can be problematic. There are already countless videos of people getting physically hurt partaking in the challenge, and now Netflix has urged people to be careful. “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE,” Netflix said in a statement on Twitter.

“We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”

Birdbox was released on Netflix at the end of December, and it quickly became the platform’s most-watched movie in its first seven days.

In other Netflix news, here’s a roundup of all the new TV shows and movies landing on the platform in January.

Smash Bros. Ultimate, Red Dead 2 Top Amazon’s Best-Selling Games Of 2018

With 2018 officially behind us, Amazon has revealed its 100 best-selling video game items of the past year. As usual, the list encompasses all of the gaming-related products the online retailer sold in 2018, from peripherals and accessories to gift cards and subscriptions, but the most popular game item in any category was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Nintendo’s new mascot brawler was both Amazon’s best-selling video game and the retailer’s overall best-selling game product in 2018–a distinction that is all the more impressive considering the title launched less than a month ago. The fighting game has been a major commercial success for Nintendo, setting new sales records for the series around the world shortly after its release. GameSpot also selected it as one of our 10 best video games of 2018.

The remainder of the top 10 games list is almost evenly divided between Switch and PS4 titles. The PS4 version of Rockstar’s critically acclaimed open-world western, Red Dead Redemption 2, was Amazon’s second-best-selling game of 2018, while Super Mario Party rounded out the top three. Two of 2018’s biggest PS4 exclusives, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, were No. 4 and No. 9, respectively, while Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 were No. 7 and No. 8.

Some of 2017’s biggest Switch exclusives also reappeared on 2018’s best-sellers list. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey were Amazon’s No. 5 and 6 best-selling games of the past year, respectively, while the Switch launch game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild closed out the top 10.

The list of overall game products was dominated by gift cards and accessories. You can see Amazon’s top 10 best-selling games below. The complete list of the retailer’s 100 best-selling game products can be found here.

Fortnite Freebie Is Coming For Some After 14 Days Event Mix-Up

The recent 14 Days of Fortnite event has wrapped up a bit sooner than some players expected. Epic has acknowledged that it shared an inaccurate date for when the challenges would expire, and it’s giving out one of its special rewards to make up for it.

“We apologize for communicating the wrong end date for 14 Days of Fortnite on social channels,” Epic wrote on its Twitter account. The company had indicated that players would have time after all 14 days of challenges were offered to complete them all. That turned out not to be the case, much to the chagrin of players who were counting on that extra time to knock out the challenges.

As an apology, Epic will hand out the 14th reward–the Equalizer glider–to anyone who completed at least one of the event’s challenges. Those who qualify for the freebie will get the item in the “near future,” but an exact time table wasn’t shared.

The glider in question features an equalizer on it and some accompanying music that plays while it’s deployed. You can get a look at it in action here.

News of this freebie comes just as the next set of challenges, those for Week 5 of Season 7, is set to be released on January 3. In the meantime, a new Fortnite patch has been released that again introduces new content, including a boom box.

Conan Makes His Triumphant Return to Marvel

It’s hard not to react to news of Marvel reacquiring the rights to the Conan franchise with mixed emotions. On one hand, Conan used to be a huge, vital part of Marvel’s publishing lineup. Not to mention how well the Star Wars franchise has fared since returning to Marvel. But on the other hand, Dark Horse has been doing great work with the property for the past 15 years. What can Marvel bring to the table that hasn’t already been done at this point? Fortunately, Conan the Barbarian #1 makes a pretty convincing argument for the latest Conan shake-up.

If nothing else, it may have been worth bringing Conan back to Marvel solely to see what magic this new creative team can weave with the character. Writer Jason Aaron is a very natural fit for this book. His work inherently has that unique blend of humor, over-the-top imagination and brutality that make for a good Conan yarn. And in hindsight, Aaron’s work on 2015’s short-lived Weirdworld revival reads like a proof-of-concept for Conan the Barbarian. Aaron’s script has a very classical feel to it, though one with just enough flavor and wit to carve a unique voice amid the thousands of other Conan comics published y Marvel and Dark Horse.

Save on Micro SD Cards for Nintendo Switch With One of These Deals

If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

Were you one of the many people who unwrapped a Nintendo Switch on Christmas morning? Or did you take advantage of one of the many Nintendo Switch deals which first started back on Black Friday? No matter how you came to acquire your shiny new Nintendo Switch, one thing is certain: You’re going to want to upgrade the internal storage at some point. Why not do it now instead of later?

The 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card has done nothing but go down in price over the last few months, and the Nintendo Switch supports up to 2TB of microSD storage. There aren’t any 2TB microSD cards yet, but 400GB for under $100 is a great deal. If you’re like me, you probably download smaller indie games, which means you can fit a whole lot on there before you approach anything close to filling it up.

Netflix Doesn’t Want You to Take the Bird Box Challenge

Though some fans have began participating in what they call the Bird Box challenge, Netflix has asked fans not not to hurt themselves in the process.

The Bird Box challenge involves people blindfolding themselves as characters do in Netflix’s popular thriller while they attempt common tasks. A quick Twitter search of #BirdBoxChallenge shows fans mostly trying to walk in public or play around the house with their children to comedic effect, but reports indicate many have attempted (and mostly failed) at doing things like riding a scooter, using an escalator or ordering food at the drive-thru while blindfolded.

An Underground Lake on Mars Is an Interesting Puzzle for Scientists

What appears to be an underground lake on Mars has been found, thanks to an ice-penetrating radar from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter, according to Science News.

The lake was discovered on the planet’s south pole, where NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also searched for liquid water, coming up with nothing.

“It’s a big mystery, we’d love to figure it out,” planetary scientist, Isaac Smith, from the Planetary Science Institute said.

The discovery was announced months ago, but scientists are still unclear about how the lake could be undetectable to NASA’s orbiter.

NordVPN Review

IGN is revisiting some of the more popular VPN applications due to reader request. Note that if you click on one of the links to buy the product, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

NordVPN has grown in popularity (See NordVPN’s website) since its inception in 2012, but it hasn’t lost what makes it good: its easy-to-use app with enough features to make savvy users happy, a strong focus on privacy, and—thanks to a bunch of new servers—decent speeds. IGN reviewed it in May2017 and I decided to revisit it due to reader demand to see if has improved, gotten worse, or remained about the same. As it turns out, it’s actually improved quite a bit, but privacy concerns are now part of the equation, tempering my enthusiasm for it somewhat.
