THQ Nordic Apologizes For AMA On Banned Website

THQ Nordic, the publisher of Darksiders 3, Biomutant, and other big games, has apologized for holding an ask me anything (AMA) session on infamous internet forum 8chan. The message board is known for hosting threads relating to subjects such as child pornography and white supremacy; THQ Nordic says it was not aware of the site’s affiliation with these topics before agreeing to the AMA.

“I personally agreed to this AMA without doing my proper due diligence to understand the history and the controversy of the site,” said THQ Nordic‘s PR & marketing director, Philipp Brock. “I do not condone child pornography, white supremacy, or racism in any shape or form.

“I am terribly sorry for the short-sightedness of my (!) decision, and promise to be far more vigorous in my assessment of these activities in the future. This was not about being edgy, this blew up and I very much regret to have done it in the first place.”

THQ Nordic announced the AMA in a tweet, saying “we’re doing an 8chan AMA and we have no idea why. Come join us!” After industry figures criticized the company for this move, it then replied to its initial tweet and stated “the opportunity was here and we took it, we got apporached [sic] in a very friendly and polite manner and were assured, said person (shoutout to Mark) will take care of the nasty stuff. So, here we are.” The tweet announcing the AMA has since been deleted.

8chan content was blocked from appearing in Google searches in 2015. Google also warned 8chan contains “suspected child abuse content.” Since then, 8chan has become embroiled in various controversies surrounding gamergate, swatting, racism, and white supremacism.

THQ Nordic was formed in 2011 after Nordic Games acquired much of the intellectual property of the now-defunct publisher THQ. More recently it has acquired Goat Simulator developer Coffee Stain, the TimeSplitters series, and the Alone in the Dark and Act of War franchises.

Pokemon Sword And Shield: What Are These Mysterious Symbols?

The eighth generation of Pokemon games, Pokemon Sword and Shield, have finally been revealed. The trailer, which you can watch above, shows off the new starter Pokemon, a new region, and how Pokemon will look on Nintendo Switch. But it also has a few shots that raise more questions than they answer.

At two points in the trailer, you can see stones with symbols carved into them. These symbols are different from previous Pokemon puzzles, like Gen 2’s Unown and Gen 3’s braille, and they could just be decoration–the new region, Galar, might be inspired by England, and these could be Stonehenge-esque stones. But they’re featured prominently in their respective shots, so it’s hard not to wonder.

Also shown in the trailer is a large carving in a hillside of what might be a Pokemon. Aside from another indication that this might be an England-inspired region, it could represent a legendary Pokemon; it appears to be both breathing fire (or smoke) and shooting out lightning bolts, and there are small figures at its feet that seem to be having a bad time.

In more regular news, the trailer revealed the new Gen 8 starter Pokemon, and Sword and Shield have been confirmed for a late 2019 release.

EVO 2019 Lineup Drops Smash Bros. Melee in Favor of Ultimate

The Evolution Championship Series has unveiled the lineup for this year, and tournament regular Super Smash Bros. Melee didn’t make the cut.

The GameCube title has been a part of the event for over 10 years, but won’t be making an appearance at EVO 2019 when it kicks off in Las Vegas this August 2 – 4.

The longtime tournament favourite (which outlasted both Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U sequel) has been replaced by the most recent Smash Bros. game, Ultimate.

Melee got a send-off in the form of a thank you video during the reveal livestream yesterday, suggesting that we may not see the brawler show up in the competition again.
