The cast of The Batman continues to take shape. Following the recent news that Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, and Paul Dano will co-star in Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie, it has been reported that Andy Serkis might play Alfred Pennyworth.
According to The Wrap, Serkis is in talks to co-star as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s faithful butler. Serkis will join Robert Pattinson as Batman, Kravitz as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, Farrell as the Penguin, and Dano as the Riddler. The movie is set to start shooting next year ahead of its June 2021 release date.
Serkis will join a long list of actors who have played Alfred over the years. Most recently, Jeremy Irons appeared as Alfred in Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Michael Caine played him in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies. The TV show Pennyworth also screened this year, with Jack Bannon starring as a young version of the character.
Pattinson was confirmed in the lead role in June. The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021. The movie has been in the works for several years, with Ben Affleck originally set to star and direct it. Affleck stepped down as director in early 2017, and more recently confirmed that he was no longer involved at all, stating that he had “tried to direct a version of it, but couldn’t crack it.”
Reeves has previously hinted at what fans could expect from the movie. “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” he said. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.”
