Billie Eilish’s Mom Was in Saints Row and Mass Effect 2

You probably know who Grammy award-winning singer Billie Eilish is. But do you know who her mom is and, more importantly, did you know that she’s been in a number of video games?

This was brought to light after a tweet from Guild Wars 2 composer Maclaine Diemer went viral that mentioned Billie Eilish’s mom, whose name is Maggie Baird, plays Samara in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2009/11/30/mass-effect-2-xbox-360-trailer-samara-demo”]

Samara is the blue-skinned Asari Justicar who you can have as a squadmate and also romance so long as you veer on the paragon side of morality. So that might mean you romanced Billie Eilish’s mom in Mass Effect.

Baird is primarily an actor for film and television, having appeared in the likes of The X-Files, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bones, and Eragon. She also wrote, co-produced, and made the soundtrack for the 2013 film Life Inside Out.

But Baird has also been a voice actor for games since at least 1999 when she played a role in the hybrid tank/FPS game Battlezone II: Combat Commander. Since then, she’s played Anezka in Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption, Amni Rhyza in Rogue Squadron, and been a voice in EverQuest II.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=best-games-of-the-2010s&captions=true”]

She then went on to give her voice to a Stilwater Resident in Saints Row, and was various characters in Saints Row 2. Other than playing Samara in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, she also did additional voices for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

It was recently announced that Billie Eilish will perform the title song for No Time to Die. That makes her the youngest artist in history to write and record a Bond song.

Team Ninja Knows Fans Want a New Ninja Gaiden

Nioh 2’s director has revealed that developer Team Ninja is already thinking about making its next game. What’s more, Team Ninja says they’re aware that there is an appetite for more Ninja Gaiden games and that, coincidentally, they’ve been inspired by a recent wave of ninja-themed video games themselves.

Team Ninja is a development cell within Koei Tecmo known for games like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive. During a recent preview event for Nioh 2, IGN was able to sit down with the game’s director, Fumihiko Yasuda, who revealed that the core members of the Nioh 2 dev team worked on Ninja Gaiden, and they want to make a new game soon, maybe another in the ninja-genre.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=2020-platform-exclusives&captions=true”]

“The core members of the team that worked on Ninja Gaiden want to make a new game,” said Yasuda. “We are aware that some fans wanted Ninja Gaiden more than Nioh 2. Now we see a lot of ninja games like [Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice] as well, and we see a lot of good inspirations in those games, so we hope to deliver some good news one day.”

While Yasuda doesn’t outright confirm a new Ninja Gaiden game is in development, he does confirm that Team Ninja is aware of the request from fans for a new Ninja Gaiden game and that they have a lot of new ideas about the genre from recent titles.

Yasuda cites From Software’s Sekiro, which was about a ninja swordsman on a mission to rescue his lord from usurpers. And while Yasuda didn’t mention these other games, there are other ninja titles in development like Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/23/nioh-2-story-trailer”]

There hasn’t been an official Ninja Gaiden game since 2012’s Ninja Gaiden 3 (not counting the 2014 spinoff Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z). But it seems like a real gold rush for ninja games, so if one of the OGs in the genre wants to stage a comeback, there’s plenty of excitement for them to do so.

Meanwhile, you can read IGN’s Nioh 2 preview here and check out our for our impressions of Team Ninja’s upcoming sequel to the surprise 2017 hit. The original Nioh was a more souls-like RPG from Team Ninja, and for Nioh 2 the developers are creating a prequel. Read our Nioh review here.

Nioh 2 Final Preview: The Boss Battle That Almost Broke Me

In the lead up to my hands-on time with Nioh 2, I did my due diligence and went back to finally finish the first game, which I hadn’t quite seen through. I felt pretty good going into the sequel’s demo with a fresh understanding of Nioh’s unique brand of fast-paced, ki pulse and stance centric combat. At first, things felt pretty good. I was breezing past most enemies without too much trouble, especially because many enemies are ripped directly from Nioh 1. Nothing, however, could prepare me for the absolute terror that was Maeda Toshiie… And yes, I now know that he was in the beta, so I guess technically, I could’ve been prepared by playing the beta, but I didn’t so this was my first time experiencing him.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=nioh-2-screenshot-gallery&captions=true”]

But before we get to that, let’s just put it out there that Nioh 2 is hard, largely in the same ways that its predecessor was. Enemies are relentless in their aggression, and now they have even more dangerous attacks that are telegraphed by a red aura. Fortunately, you’ve got new tools too. Those dangerous red aura attacks can be “Burst Countered” to inflict massive stamina damage on opponents, very much like how Mikiri Counters worked in Sekiro.

It often feels like Nioh 2 was balanced by making sure that for every new tool that players received, something else was added to make things even more difficult. Sure, players now have access to a number of powerful Yokai abilities that could turn the tide of a battle, but you’ll now frequently find yourself having to fight enemies in dark realms, which dramatically impedes your ki recovery ability. You can now easily summon NPCs into the game to help you out even when playing offline, but in order to get the currency needed to summon them, you need to beat powerful revenants left by fallen players. And sure, you now have the ability to counter dangerous abilities with a burst counter, but that also means enemies are more likely to use those dangerous abilities, like these ninjas that will always use a quick suicide attack once they start to get dangerously low on life, just like in Ninja Gaiden 2.

NIOH Main Menu Theme OST.00_01_51_19.Still002

Back to Maeda, the first of two bosses I fought during my playtime of Nioh 2. My first attempt went pretty well with a summoned AI to assist me, but I made the decision right then and there to overcome him all by myself. While the Switchglaive that I had from the start of the demo felt sufficiently powerful enough to deal with all of the regular enemies leading up to Maeda, it felt as deadly as a feather against this quan dao-wielding monster. So my strategy, for the most part, revolved around staying aggressive and attempting to deplete his ki meter so I could land a powerful execution attack while he was stunned. The problem is, it’s very hard to remain aggressive when you also have to balance management of your own ki to ensure that you don’t leave yourself stunned and vulnerable.

After what felt like a hundred attempts, I finally managed to take him down after reaching deep into my bag of ninjutsu and onmyo magic and finding two things that seemed to work exceptionally well: Caltrops, which would briefly interrupt him whenever he came forward to attack; and a sloth talisman, which would temporarily slow him down to the point where I could maneuver to his back when he was in the windup for an attack.

Despite the mental stress that went with the thought of potentially not beating the demo due to this boss, I still loved the fight against Maeda Toshiie. Not only because of the mechanical aspect of it just being a really fast-paced fight with tough but fair timing windows, but because I was able to take a step back, look through my available abilities, and equip myself with tools that helped me alleviate the parts of the fight that were giving me trouble. It’s this level of flexibility in Nioh 2’s combat that is most exciting, and while Maeda Toshiie almost broke me, it only made my anticipation for Nioh 2’s release on March 13 all the stronger.

Team Ninja Reveal How Long Nioh 2 Is

We’re only a couple of months away from the March 13 release of Team Ninja’s Nioh 2, which very much shares in the brutal reflexive combat of the original. But will the game also be as long? During a recent interview, Nioh 2 producer Fumihiko Yasuda confirmed that the sequel will be similar in length and amount of content.

“So the number of the main missions is about the same,” said Yasuda. “It’s lengthwise about the same as Nioh 1, but when we looked at how long it took for the players to complete Nioh 1, it depended on the player, how good they were, how they played it, etc. So it’s hard to say, but when I played the game this past January, it took me 55 hours.”

The first Nioh was a sizable game that definitely demanded a lot of skill and determination to overcome its various challenges at a steady pace–I personally recall taking about 60 hours during my first playthrough. But if you aimed to complete its extensive log of side-missions, bonus boss fights, and Twilight stages, that runtime could easily extend past 80 hours. If a standard run of Nioh 2 sits at around 55 hours, then we’re looking at a pretty similar experience, especially with side activities considered.

Nioh was a critical success when it first released in 2017. In GameSpot’s review, which gave it a 9/10, we praised its mixture of a feudal Japanese setting and tough-as-nails Dark Souls combat. “Nioh’s most invigorating and intimidating moments occur when you feel you’re at equal footing with your opponent. And it’s during these encounters that one careless move can result in your demise or the right string of thoughtful actions can make you feel invincible.”

Nioh 2 is set to release on March 13 for PS4, and sometime later in 2020 on PC. For more about Nioh 2, be sure to watch its latest story trailer. Xbox Game Pass Announces More Xbox One, PC Games For February

Microsoft has announced another set of Xbox Game Pass games coming to the service on both Xbox One and PC in the coming weeks. The library is mostly the same between the two, with one notable difference.

On February 6, the Xbox One and PC services will both get Final Fantasy XV and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Then on February 13, the Xbox One service will add Death Squared. The PC service is instead getting Death’s Gambit, though the announcement doesn’t list a date for it.

Final Fantasy XV is the first in a planned volley of Final Fantasy games coming to Game Pass. This latest numbered iteration follows a foursome of friends as they go on a road trip in preparation for impending nuptials. Naturally, everything goes horribly wrong. Youngblood is a spin-off sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, starring the twin daughters of famed Nazi-hunter BJ Blazkowicz. Death Squared is a color-coded puzzle game, and Death’s Gambit is a 2D action-platformer featuring Death’s right-hand being.

The announcement also confirmed a handful of games that are leaving the Xbox One service soon. Those include Disney Epic Mickey 2, Jackbox Party Pack 2, Pumped BMX Pro, Rage, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Now that February has begun, a new set of Xbox Games with Gold are available too. A Gold subscription is included with a Game Pass Ultimate membership, so if you have that version of the service you’ve got the full library available to you.

Fortnite 11.50 Update Patch Notes Preps New Event, Switches Physics Systems

Fortnite has gotten its weekly update, making some major under-the-hood changes and kicking off a new event. Details on the event are scarce in the patch notes, but should be revealed later today. [Update: Indeed, the new Love and War mode has now been revealed and runs until just before Season 2 begins.] In the meantime, you can get a feel for the revised physics system.

The physics change has been previously announced, but the 11.50 update finally implements it. Epic says that right now its main goal is to make sure Fortnite still feels like Fortnite, so make sure to use the in-game feedback tool to report any issues. The update also unvaults the Launch Pad for non-competitive playlists.

In addition, this update fixes a handful of bugs. Those include removing the sidegrading feature in competitive playlists, resolving an issue with new console players having trouble with matchmaking, and an iOS player bug that would trigger the swipe-up feature when trying to access the inventory.

Meanwhile, Epic is preparing to launch Chapter 2, Season 2 later this month. The challenges are still on for the remainder of Season 1, so check out our challenge guide to get you through and maximize that battle pass.

Fortnite Update 11.50 Changes

  • The new event starts soon! Check back here later today for more details.
  • In non-competitive playlists, the Launch Pad has been unvaulted.
  • Implemented Unreal Engine’s Chaos physics system, mentioned previously here.
    • At launch, our goal is to ensure that Fortnite still feels like what you would expect. We’ll be closely monitoring your feedback from the in-game Feedback tool for any issues you may be experiencing.
    • To report issues via the in-game Feedback tool, select Feedback in the main menu and choose Bug. We encourage you to put “Physics” in the subject line and include a concise message in the body that accurately describes the issue(s) you’re experiencing.

Bug fixes:

  • Resolved an issue involving some players’ completion of the “Search chests in a single match” Chaos Rising Challenge not being saved.
  • The “Earn Gold Scavenger Medals” Rippley vs. Sludge Overtime Challenge now tracks progress properly.
  • The Sidegrading feature is no longer present in competitive playlists. Its presence in these playlists was unintentional, as noted in our v11.40 post.
  • Resolved an issue involving new players on consoles having difficulty matchmaking after first linking their Epic account.
  • Addressed reports of iOS players activating their device’s swipe-up feature when trying to press inventory buttons.

New Saw Movie Spiral Has a Trailer and Poster

Chris Rock’s new entry in the long-running Saw horror series finally has not just a poster and a trailer, but also a name: it’s called Spiral: From The Book of Saw.

Anyone familiar with the movies will know exactly where that name hails from: the red spiral design drawn on the cheeks of main villain Jigsaw’s puppet, Billy. That design seems to be making a haunting return in the latest film in the series, which not only stars Chris Rock, but also features a story created by him, too.

Spiral From The Book of Saw Poster

In the new poster the spiral design can be seen in the red lamp of a set of traffic lights. The trailer shows it recurring even more, with it sprayed on cars at crime scenes and drawn over walls, presumably inside one of Jigsaw’s dens.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-25-best-horror-movies&captions=true”]

Spiral also stars Samuel L. Jackson, and releases May 15. While the trailer looks incredibly dark, Chris Rock has promised that there will be a ‘sprinkling of humor’ in Spiral.
