New Marvel Movie In Development At Sony

Despite the rash of COVID-19 (coronavirus) related delays in both production and release for movies around the world, the minds behind your favorite franchises are continuing to ramp up their plans. Variety has reported that Sony has pegged TV director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders) for a new film project in Sony’s Marvel universe.

Though details about the project remain mysterious, it has been noted that Clarkson will work on Sony’s first female-focused project, making it possible that she’ll be taking on the Madame Web movie announced late last year. In Marvel Comics, Madame Web is an elderly, telepathic, precognitive mutant confined to a hospital bed surrounded by life support machines that resemble a spider web. Her mutant abilities make her a strong ally for Peter Parker, though she never actually fights villains herself for obvious reasons.

Given Madame Web’s status as a side character in the Marvel Universe, it’s certainly possible that placing her as the main character for the movie is a red herring and that it will actually serve to introduce one of Marvel’s many Spider-Women into the live action universe. Madame Web happens to be the granddaughter of one of them, Charlotte Witter, the fourth person to take over the mantle.

Meanwhile, Sony’s other Marvel-related projects, Venom 2 and Morbius have been delayed thanks to the global pandemic. Morbius will be hitting theaters on March 19, 2021, pushed back nearly a full year from its original date of July 31, 2020. Venom 2 will be arriving on June 25, 2021.

Cicadas Are Back After 17 Years, But Won’t Be In Animal Crossing Until July

If you’ve played any of the Animal Crossing games before New Horizons, then you’re no stranger to the mystical buzzing of the cicada. The loud summer bugs are a staple of the franchise and are finally returning to the real world after 17 years of underground development. They’ll start to cover trees across Eastern North America and elsewhere in the coming weeks.

While real-world cicada’s will start emerging throughout May, we won’t see them in Animal Crossing until the first day of July when the Brown, Giant, and Robust Cicadas start sucking the fluid from every tree between town hall and the museum. Cicadas show up during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere and next year in early January for people playing in the Southern Hemisphere. You can find complete details about how to catch every type of cicada in our bug catching guide.

There isn’t a 13 or 17 year cycle with the insects within Animal Crossing, but there has been an eight-year gap between Animal Crossing: New Leaf and New Horizons.

Cicadas, an insect with over 3,000 species worldwide, generally spend years underground when young before emerging for a few weeks or months of adulthood. According to experts, the unique lifecycle was developed to avoid predators. This makes the emergence of each brood, a group of young born at the same time, quite the newsworthy event.

17 year cicadas are expected in greater numbers in North Carolina, southwestern Virginia, and southeastern West Virginia. You’ll definitely hear their summer song if you’re in one of those areas, everyone else can turn to their Animal Crossing villages if they want to enjoy the friendly buzzing without having to go outside.

The Justice League Snyder Cut Will Release On HBO Max In 2021

It’s official. A different cut of the movie Justice League from original director Zack Snyder is in the works and it will be released on HBO Max in 2021. The director announced the news during an online Q&A for Man of Steel. Some fans have been clamoring for the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League since the director stepped down from the film and Joss Whedon took over as director. Now they’ll get it, sort of.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder revealed that the project will be “an entirely new thing.” What does that mean? “You probably saw one-fourth of what I did,” the director said of the theatrical cut of the movie. Now, with the upcoming HBO Max streaming service, Snyder had an outlet for the project.

Those who believed a version of the movie existed that was ready are going to be slightly disappointed. It turns out the truth of the matter is that Snyder walked away from the project following the death of his daughter with an unfinished cut that has no visual effects or post-production work done to it. But, after screening what he had for Warner Bros. and DC executives, they were interested.

Now it’s going to become a reality, though the timeline is a little foggy. Snyder said he has reached out to the movie’s cast, letting them know they may be called upon to help complete the project. Meanwhile, negotiations with those who can complete the visual effects and post-production are underway.

Also unknown is how the project will be presented. According to THR, it could be a four-hour cut of the film, or be divided into six separate “chapters,” as if it were a TV series. Regardless, Snyder and his wife/producer Deborah Snyder are excited about sharing it with the audience. “This movie was the culmination of a hero’s journey that all these characters went on,” she said. “And the idea was always to build them up to be the heroes people expected them to be.”

At this point there is no specific release date for the project, other than the news that it will arrive next year.

Disney+’s New Muppet Show Gets Release Date, Synopsis, And Images

When Disney+ launched, the streaming service revealed a new original show starring the Muppets was in the works. Not much information was revealed about the project at the time. Now, though, Disney+ has released some details, and images, for the project. Are you ready for Muppets Now?

The first season of the series will consist of six episodes and will debut on Disney+ on Friday, July 31. The synopsis for the new show reads, “In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him.”

In sounds as if, in typical Muppets style, the show will lean heavily into meta humor with a streaming series about making a streaming series. As for which Muppets to expect in the show, a series of tweets have revealed images from Muppets Now that include all the usual suspects, from Kermit the Frog to members of the Electric Mayhem band. Even Statler and Waldorf are getting in on the fun and will undoubtedly have something mean to say.

No Caption Provided

The new show won’t just feature the Muppet characters, though. A press release for the series teases “surprising special guest stars” joining in on the fun for a return to “the kind of startling silliness and heartfelt fun that first made [the Muppets] famous.”

In other Disney+ news, the service also announced when users will finally be able to watch The Simpsons in its proper aspect ratio and revealed a short film from the long-running series, The Longest Daycare, will be added on May 29.

Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Now Available To Rent And Buy On Blu-ray/DVD

Following its release for purchase on streaming services and digital stores, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is available now on Blu-ray and DVD, while it can also now be rented on digital stores. Previously, the only way to watch Sonic at home was to purchase it outright.

Sonic’s Blu-ray and DVD version comes with a series of bonus features, including deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and commentary from director Jeff Fowler and Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz. There is also a bonus feature called “Building Robotnik with Jim Carrey,” featuring Jim Carrey talking about his process of becoming the villain.

You can see a full rundown of bonus features below, along with one of the deleted scenes featuring a baby Sonic and unfinished CG. It’s a trip.

Sonic Bonus Features:

  • Commentary by director Jeff Fowler and the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz
  • Around the World in 80 Seconds — See Sonic’s next adventure!
  • Deleted Scenes — Director Jeff Fowler introduces deleted scenes
  • Bloopers — Laugh along with Jim Carrey and the cast
  • “Speed Me Up” Music Video
  • For the Love of Sonic — Jim Carrey and the cast discuss what Sonic the Hedgehog means to them
  • Building Robotnik with Jim Carrey — See Jim Carrey bring supervillain Dr. Robotnik to life
  • The Blue Blur: Origins of Sonic — Explore the origins of the legendary Blue Blur
  • Sonic On Set — Visit the set with the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz

We gave the film an 8/10 in our Sonic the Hedgehog review, calling it “a light, funny movie, and while it definitely skews young, longtime Sonic fans should have just as much fun finally seeing the Blue Blur on the big screen.”

Sega has a lot in store for Sonic beyond the movie. Sega will release news about Sonic on the 20th day of each month in 2020, so we should learn more very soon.

Rockstar’s Parent Company Re-Registers Trademarks For “Judas”

Rockstar and 2K’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has seemingly re-registered its trademarks for a mysterious project called “Judas.”

Records from the Unites States Patent & Trademark Office database show that Take-Two re-registered its trademarks for Judas on May 11, after originally registering the trademarks in April 2016.

The prosecution history for the original April 2016 Judas trademark filings show that Take-Two filed for multiple extensions on the trademark, up until November 2019. The new trademarks cover the same goods and services, including video games, movies, and more.

You can read the full text of each trademark filing through the links below.

April 22, 2016

A website, “www.judasthegame.com,” is registered to brand protection agency MarkMonitor, which is also the registrar for Rockstar’s official website. Take-Two has never commented on Judas.

According to the Bible, Judas Iscariot was one of Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples. He is perhaps best known for his betrayal of Jesus, and today, Judas is often used to describe a traitorous person.

Trademark filings don’t always lead to product announcements, as Activision obtained trademarks for things like Call of Duty Space Warfare and Secret Warfare, and those never came to be. Rockstar famously announced a spy game called Agent at E3 2009, but it never came out.

The re-registration of the Judas trademarks comes just before Take-Two releases its next earnings report on May 20. If there is any news on Judas during that event, we’ll report back with more details.

During Take-Two’s earnings report in February, CEO Strauss Zelnick teased that the company’s upcoming development pipeline for the coming years is the “largest and most diverse in our history.” The slate of releases includes sequels and new IP, Zelnick said, according to Tweaktown.

Take-Two president Karl Slatoff tempered expectations for the company’s new release slate, saying he’s sure that plans will change and not every game in development will be released. “One thing we know for sure is that it will change,” Zelnick said about Take-Two’s development pipeline. “Not everything in the pipeline will see the light of day, and there will be things that are not in the pipeline that will come out.”

PlayStation 5 Will Feature An Evolution In Sound, Sony Says

The PlayStation 5 will offer what Sony is calling an “evolution” for sound. This is according to the slides from Sony’s latest corporate strategy meeting, which outline many of the company’s plans for the upcoming next-generation console.

One slide of their presentation outlines how the PlayStation 5 will open up new sound possibilities thanks to the new processing unit it contains. “By installing a customized 3D audio processing unit in PS5, we have made it possible to deliver diverse and sophisticated 3D audio experiences,” the slide reads. “Players can experience sound that moves in from front to behind, above to below, and all around them.”

According to the report, combining these new sound possibilities with other features like the speed of an SSD and haptic feedback controllers, the PlayStation 5 will offer “experiences that were not possible before.”

The possibilities of what the PS5 could achieve were recently showcased by Unreal, which showed how games powered by Unreal Engine 5 might look on the system. The report also suggests that Sony will unveil some next-generation games soon.

While we haven’t seen any PS5 games yet, we’re getting a better picture of what the console will be capable of. Here’s everything we know so far.
