Pedro Pascal’s Game Of Thrones Audition Was “Unusual,” And Here’s Why

Pedro Pascal played the memorable character Oberyn Martell on HBO’s hit fantasy show Game of Thrones, and now we’ve learned a little more about how it all began. David Benioff, who co-created Game of Thrones, told Variety that Pascal’s audition for the show was far from ordinary (at least for the time).

Benioff said Pascal auditioned through a video he filmed on his iPhone–and the quality of the video wasn’t great. But in the end, it didn’t matter much because his performance convinced Benioff to hire him.

“First of all, it was an iPhone selfie audition, which was unusual,” Benioff said. “And this wasn’t one of the new-fangled iPhones with the fancy cameras. It looked like sh**; it was shot vertical; the whole thing was very amateurish. Except for the performance, which was intense and believable and just right.”

Pascal got the audition by happenstance. His friend, actor Sarah Paulson, agreed to send his audition video to her actor friend Amanda Peet, who is married to Benioff.

Pascal’s Game of Thrones character was only on the show for one season, in Season 4. But after the show, Pascal’s profile as an actor grew substantially, and he landed a starring role on Netflix’s Narcos while he played a main character in the 2018 movie The Equalizer 2 opposite Denzel Washington.

Pascal currently plays the lead role in the Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian, while he plays a mysterious man in the upcoming superhero movie Wonder Woman 1984. Pascal is also lined up to play a role in the absurd Nicolas Cage movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Prime Day 2020: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Is Only $40, Its Lowest Price Yet

Although Nintendo’s not quite as reticent to discount its games as it once was, it’s still fairly uncommon to see the company’s titles go on sale, which makes it ironic that some of the best Prime Day 2020 game deals we’ve seen have been for Switch games. A number of the console’s best titles are currently discounted at Amazon and other retailers, including the recently released Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition released on Switch this past May. This updated version of the classic Wii RPG features improved visuals and refined UI elements. On top of that, it comes with a brand-new epilogue story called Future Connected, which follows Shulk and Melia’s adventure one year after the events of the main story.

We gave the Switch version a 9/10 in our Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition review. “Although not every aspect of Xenoblade Chronicles has aged as well as others, Definitive Edition proves that Xenoblade Chronicles is still a fantastic JRPG with an immense amount of strategic depth that’s still impressive in 2020,” critic Jake Dekker wrote. “Its bevy of improvements and additions, as well as its fantastic epilogue, make this an adventure worth embarking on a decade later.”

There are quite a few other can’t-miss game deals in Amazon’s Prime Day sale. You can also pick up Pokemon Sword or Shield for $40, while Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is down to $50 (just in time for its latest DLC character, Steve from Minecraft). Assassin’s Creed Valhalla PC Minimum Specs Revealed, Including 4K Requirements

Dexter Comes Back From The Dead

It’s been seven long years since Dexter, the Showtime drama about a forensic analyst who serially murders all his problems away, bowed out with a series finale after eight seasons. And apparently, seven years is a long enough runway for the curtains to rise on a newly announced limited series revival: According to a release sent out by TV network, Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips are reteaming for a 10-episode return that is due to begin production in early 2021 and set to premiere sometime next fall.

“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and fow Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” said Gary Levin, Showtime’s co-entertainment president. “We would only want to revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!”

Despite that stated eagerness, the release contains no details on what the new “creative take” will be. But seeing as how–spoiler alert–the series wrapped with Dexter faking his own death and living under a new name in Oregon, while his sister was in a coma and his son Harrison was sent to live with an ex, it’s safe to say Dexter has more than a few unresolved issues.

In addition to his work on Dexter, Phillips served as showrunner and executive producer on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie on its final three seasons. He also previously created the series Suddenly Susan, Get Real, and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Has A Cat In A Backpack And You Can Pet It

Spider-Man: Miles Morales features the younger, hipper wallcrawler striking out on his own under the mentorship of Peter Parker, but he’s not quite alone. Apparently he has the help of a frankly adorable kitty-cat, who can even help him in battle. Watch out! Here comes a Spider-Cat.

The revelation comes from Game Informer footage as part of its cover story. In it, Miles saves the kitty in a backpack, and then goes web-swinging to deliver it back home. Then he dons a suit that includes a backpack, complete with the newly dubbed “Spider-Cat” in tow. The cat can even be seen assisting him in a finisher against the world’s most humiliated thug.

The kitty just hangs out in his backpack all the while, showing a level of calm and restraint that would not actually exist in any cat stuffed in a bag while you do aerobatic backflips. The mask makes him look distinctly like Spider-Cat, an actual character from Earth-999 in the Marvel comics multi-verse.

The cover story also gave more details on Fidelity Mode, which will run at 30 FPS with significant visual enhancements like ray tracing. Miles is the only playable character in this Spidey game, and it’s said to include some surprise villains.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is coming November 12, alongside the launch of the PlayStation 5. It’s coming to PS4 as well on the same day, and you can upgrade to the next-gen console version for free. For more details, check out our Spider-Man: Miles Morales preorder guide.

Here’s The Very First Physical PS5 Game, According To Gearbox

Many questions about the PlayStation 5, particularly the look of its user interface, remain unknown. However, PS5-adjacent news continues to trickle out. Case in point, Gearbox Software’s CEO has what he said is the first PlayStation 5 game to ever be manufactured

Randy Pitchford took to Twitter to share several photos of what he claims is the first PlayStation 5 game pressed on a physical Blu-ray disc. He’s holding a PS5 copy of Godfall, the new Gearbox Software-published game dubbed a “looter-slasher.”

There are several key takeaways from the back of the box, particularly when it comes to playing Godfall. The box lists that there’s no offline mode, PlayStation Plus is required for network features, and the game takes up at least 50 GB of storage space.

While PlayStation Plus is required to play online with friends, the official Godfall Twitter account clarified that an online subscription is not necessary to play solo.

The description on the back of Godfall’s box also indicates vibration function and trigger effects are supported, meaning Godfall takes advantage of DualSense’s sensory features.

Gearbox has been showing a lot of Godfall in the lead-up to its November 12 launch on PC and PlayStation 5. This includes an in-depth look at the game’s cooperative play and weapon classes, as well as a cinematic trailer that sets up Godfall’s narrative. Check out our Godfall preorder guide to learn about the bonuses and editions available. And while you’re at it, read up on our PlayStation 5 preorder guide to stay up-to-date on which retailers will have stock ahead of its November 12 release.

Amazon Orders I Know What You Did Last Summer YA Horror Series

The long-gestating plans to turn the hit 1997 teen-slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer into a “YA horror series” just moved along one big step closer to reality: Variety is reporting that Amazon Studios has given the idea a series order. If the adaptation idea sounds a little out there, it’s worth remembering that the ’90s movie was itself an adaptation of the 1973 YA suspense novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

Sara Goodman (Preacher) will write and co-executive produce the series. Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum) will also co-executive produce, joined by James Wan (Aquaman). The new series sounds like a back-to-basics approach featuring the same premise as the movie (via Variety): “In a town full of secrets, a group of teenagers are stalked by a mysterious killer a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night.” Based on initial–though still sparse–details, the series will be a modern update sticking to the original formula.

“The best horror franchises always have another scare coming, and this I Know What You Did Last Summer series from Sara Goodman is a perfectly twisted update to the iconic slasher movie,” said Albert Cheng, COO and co-head of television for Amazon Studios. “Any way you slice it, our global Prime Video customers will love this modern take on the fan favorite film.”

The original movie was written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and directed by Jim Gillespie (Venom).
