FX’s Shogun, Greenlit In 2018, Back In Active Development

FX’s Shogun is finally back on track–as announced at Disney Investor Day on December 10–after being greenlit way back in summer 2018, and then almost immediately subsequently delayed in pre-production to build in extra time to polish scripts and figure out logistics for filming the 10-episode series. In 2018, the network was hailing the show as its largest international scale production, with filming in the U.K. and Japan.

Two years later, FX has not lost any bravado or enthusiasm for the series. John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions said that the adaptation of James Clavell’s beloved epic saga, Shogun, is back on track and set to be “one of the most sweeping, sophisticated, and adult series FX has ever created.” Although not set in italics, “adult” is a key word here–FX describes the show’s world as being “set within the riveting and real Game of Thrones that was feudal Japan.”

The Game of Thrones gauntlet being thrown down is not just aspirational thinking. Adapted by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, the show’s creative staff also includes Tim Van Patten, an award-winning producer of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, and also the director of Game of Thrones’ pilot and many early episodes.

Back in 2018, Landgraf, says that this new version will set itself apart from the previous 1980 television adaptation by de-emphasizing the focus on a Westerner’s perspective on the era.

“[The FX version] is told from multiple points of view, not just the singular Western white male point of view,” said Landgraf. “It’s told through many Japanese points of view, and there is a lot of fun and fascinating work going on to try to balance the story out and tell it from both points of view.”

Epic Is Giving Away 15 Free Games For Christmas Starting Next week

Epic already gives away free games every week, but starting next Thursday, you’ll be able to snag a freebie every day. To celebrate the holidays, the Epic free games program is kicking into high gear with 15 free games in 15 days. Epic ran a similar promotion last year featuring 12 free games. All you need to take part in the holiday giveaways is a free Epic account.

At this time, it’s unclear which games will be featured in the promotion. The first “mystery” game goes live on December 17 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. If Epic follows the same formula as last year, we’ll know what the next free game will be a day in advance. However, there’s a chance each free game will be a mystery right up until it unlocks.

We would expect to see some great games in the promotion. Last year, wonderful indies such as Into the Breach, Celeste, Ape Out, and Superhot were included in the holiday promotion. Make sure to check back next week, as we’ll update this article with the freebies as they are revealed.

In addition to giving away free games, Epic will be hosting a holiday sale starting next week, which will likely be filled with steep discounts on hundreds of games.

In the meantime, don’t forget to snag the free games that are available until December 17. Right now, Epic is giving away two great Obsidian RPGs: Pillars of Eternity: Definitive edition and Tyranny: Gold edition.

Fall Guys Season 3 Exclusive: New Level Tundra Run Revealed

IGN’s very happy to be able to reveal a brand new level coming to Fall Guys in Season 3 – welcome to Tundra Run.

Adding to Fall Guys’ set of races, this is a rush to qualify by crossing the finish line, but offers perhaps one of the cruellest obstacle courses in the game so far. You can check out a gameplay video below:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/fall-guys-season-3-exclusive-tundra-run-level-reveal”]

Tundra Run offers major choices about how to proceed through it, each with pros and cons. In all, the level will have you:

  • Climbing a narrow, chicaning hill while trying to avoid growing, cannon-fired snowballs.
  • Passing through a set of presents that fire giant boxing gloves (or creeping around the narrow ledges behind them.
  • Climbing a steep hill, assisted by a fan.
  • Jumping over a set of boxing glove presents, or crossing longer, icy, obstacle strewn paths around them.
  • Climbing a hill covered in pinball-like flippers that shoot you backwards through the level, while a moving fan also blows you back down.
  • Using a set of flippers to reach small floating flippers, which also feature flippers to send you over the obstacle-guarded finishing line (or plummeting to your doom).

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/06/fall-guys-ultimate-knockout-review”]

It is, quite frankly, a mean-looking race, and seems to be another step up in the skill levels required after players have mastered the Season 1 and 2 stages.

Tundra Run marks one of a several new levels being added in the Winter-themed Season 3 – and stick with IGN for more exclusive drops of the new content.

The Acolyte: Star Wars Mystery Thriller Series Sparks Darth Plagueis Theories

The Acolyte, Leslye Headland’s mysterious new Star Wars series, has sparked some theories about Darth Plagueis and the Sith Order.

During the Disney Investor Day presentation on Thursday, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy shared a few details about Leslye Headland’s upcoming Star Wars project, The Acolyte. While plot specifics were not given for the female-centric Disney+ series, Kennedy revealed that the “mystery thriller” focuses on the “shadowy secrets and emergent dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=every-upcoming-star-wars-movie&captions=true”]

The High Republic era, which is going to be explored further in Lucasfilm’s multi-pronged publishing initiative, takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga. The Acolyte is set in the “final days” of this era, so fans have been speculating over which characters might make an appearance in the new series, with some even wondering whether we could see a live-action debut from Darth Plagueis.

As noted by Den of Geek, Plageuis was born sometime between 147 and 120 BBY in the classic Legends continuity, making him at least 20 years old during this era, which ended in 100 BBY. Even though it’s unclear how this matches up with Disney canon, fans expressed their excitement over the prospect of seeing more of Plagueis’ origins and the rumblings of the Sith leading into the prequels.

By definition, an acolyte is a person who “assists a member of the clergy in a liturgical service by performing minor duties,” which could refer to the Jedi or those who possess the “emergent dark side powers.” Whether that’s Plagueis or the Sith remains to be seen, but we do know that there are plenty of other challenges and enemies present during this period, including the Drengir and the Nihil.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/star-wars-the-high-republic-explained”]

The opening crawl for the upcoming High Republic publishing initiative provided fans with an early insight into the state of the galaxy during this era. The text teased a time of peace, hope, and prosperity in a “magnificent renaissance” that becomes endangered by a “frightening new adversary” who threatens to disrupt the harmony of the Jedi heroes.

If you want to learn more about this largely unexplored period, read our explainer about Star Wars’ ever-growing mythos. Or, if you want to find out more about some of the other projects that were discussed at the Disney Investor Day presentation, check out our complete round-up of every movie and TV show announced at the event.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Is Already The US’s Best-Selling Game Of 2020

In less than a month on the market, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has already outsold every other game during 2020 in the United States. That’s according to the NPD Group, which has released its monthly report for November and confirmed the ongoing dominance of CoD.

This marks the 13th year in a row where a new Call of Duty game was the top-selling game in its launch month, according to NPD. It’s news that has long since ceased being a surprise. The launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S didn’t impact this trend, with Cold War coming out as the top-selling game on PlayStation and Xbox platforms for both November and the year overall. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons stand as the second and third top-selling games for the year through November.

Coming in at the #2 spot on NPD’s list of best-selling games in November was Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which is now the year’s #7 best-selling game. It was a particularly big launch for Valhalla–which, like Cold War, released on next-gen platforms alongside current-gen ones and PC–attracting higher sales in its launch month than any AC game dating back to 2012’s Assassin’s Creed III.

The #3 seller in November was Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the cross-gen, standalone Spider-Man game. It was actually the second best seller on PlayStation platforms during the month, outselling Valhalla.

It’s worth noting that NPD’s charts accounts do include digital sales, but only from publishers that opt to share that data. That means Nintendo games, for instance, don’t factor in digital sales on these charts, though Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Switch’s big release in November, did still make it to #6. (Take-Two also no longer shares digital sales, which may explain GTA V’s recent absence from these charts.) Additionally, games are ranked on dollar sales, rather than the number of units they sold.

The NPD report also revealed that PS5 set a new record for a console’s launch month in the US. Perhaps due to supply constraints–it’s very tough to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S even a month later–Switch still emerged as the month’s top-selling console, a record it’s held for 24 months in a row.

Read on for a look at the full list of top sellers in November and 2020 overall. These charts cover November 1-28, meaning they lack a few days from the end of the month–making CoD’s surge to the top of the 2020 charts all the more impressive. The game is set to be integrated with CoD: Warzone next week.

PS5 Had The Biggest Launch Month In US History

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S console sales helped set a new record for video game hardware sales according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. Most notably, Sony’s PS5 achieved the highest launch month sales of a console in US history, topping the previous record help by PS4.

“Consumers spent a November record $1.4 billion on new video game hardware, an increase of 58% when versus a year ago,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella explained. “Growth was driven by the launches of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Year-to-date hardware spending reached $4 billion, 34% higher than a year ago.”

The top-selling next-gen console of the month was the PS5, although both systems would likely have sold even more units if supply had been able to meet demand. The PS5 achieved the highest launch month for both unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in US history, shattering the November 2013 record that had been held by the PS4.

Sony’s DualSense controller also made a big impression on the market, achieving “the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a gamepad in U.S. history,” according to Piscatella. Nintendo’s Switch console still performed extremely well in November, outselling the PS5 and becoming the best-selling hardware platform in units sold for a record 24 consecutive months. It’s worth noting though that the Nintendo Switch retails for $300 and the Switch Lite will cost you $200, which resulted in the PS5 still generating more overall revenue with its $500 console model and the $400 PS5 Digital Edition.

Software sales also made substantial gains, as well as jumping up 32% when compared to last year thanks to the combination of highly-anticipated games on current and next-gen consoles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War is the best-selling game of its release month for the 13th consecutive year, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla was the second best-selling game of November as it earned the highest launch month sales for an Assassin’s Creed franchise title since 2012’s Assassin’s Creed III, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales took third place on the November charts.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Offering More Freebies Now

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has been getting content updates at a regular pace since launch, but if you need a little extra tempting to jump back into the fray, the game is also offering some free extras simply for logging on.

A Call of Duty tweet announced that logging on to the game anytime between now and 11 PM PT on December 15 will net you two bundles: the Field Research bundle and the Certified bundle. The Field Research bundle gets you a “Scorch” Park skin, Excavator SMG Blueprint, and Abyssal Discovery calling card, while the Certified bundle nets you a “Barrio” Garcia skin, Ground Patrol assault rifle blueprint, an Epic reticle, and Epic weapon charm.

The announcement came just hours before the game’s appearance at The Game Awards, which revealed the Rebirth map for Warzone and showed some of the content coming to Season 1 when it starts on December 16.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War also had a strong showing in the NPD sales figures. As usual for a Call of Duty game, it topped the US sales charts on the month of release. But besides that, it also became to the top-seller of 2020 altogether.
