Doctor Strange Star Benedict Cumberbatch On His WandaVision Non-Appearance

The mysterious nature of the recent Marvel show WandaVision provoked lots of fan theories and rumors. One of these was that Doctor Strange might make an appearance in the final episode. He didn’t, but now actor Benedict Cumberbatch has commented on these rumors.

Cumberbatch appeared on The Tonight Show, where host Jimmy Fallon asked Cumberbatch if had anything to say to fans about the issue. Amusingly, Fallon was careful not to specifically say whether Cumberbatch had appeared or not, something the actor played along with in his reply.

“If it didn’t happen, then I am sorry about that,” he said. “If it did, hell, what a lot to look forward to! But if it didn’t, um, I don’t know why.”

The main reason that fans expected a cameo from Stephen Strange was because the events of WandaVision will feed into the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is currently shooting in London. Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff, will appear in that movie, and in the Fallon interview, Cumberbatch described it as “a very exciting next step for Wanda.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi, who helmed the 2000s Spider-Man movies as well as the Evil Dead series. Cumberbatch was recently asked about working with Raimi, and described him as an “an incredible force, especially in this genre. But he’s so humble, he’s so nice, he’s so appreciative, you really wanna serve him.”

In related news, it has been reported that Cumberbatch will star in the World War II drama War Magician, in which he plays a real-world illusionist who used magic to beat the Nazis. It’ll be directed by Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow.

EA Play Is Coming To Xbox Game Pass For PC Tomorrow

Xbox Game Pass PC and Ultimate members will be given access to EA Play on PC starting tomorrow, March 18.

Subscribers will be able to access more than 60 games from EA’s vault, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Squadrons and The Sims 4. Discounts on digital purchases of EA games, game trials and monthly in-game rewards for games like Madden 21 and Apex Legends will also be provided to subscribers.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/09/ea-play-with-xbox-game-pass-ultimate-official-trailer”]

The way players will access EA Play on PC has been detailed in this short video. Subscribers will have to sign in to the Xbox app on PC, then they will need to install the EA Desktop app to download their EA Play game of choice. After linking their EA account to their Xbox account, they will then be able to download and play games from the EA library. EA Play previously arrived on consoles for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in November of 2020.

It’s been quite the week for Xbox Game Pass. After Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax was officially confirmed, 20 Bethesda titles were brought to the service including Dishonored, Doom and Skyrim. We also learned earlier this week that the upcoming Square Enix shooter Outriders would be coming to Game Pass for console on launch day, that Undertale would hit the service, and that the previously Switch exclusive Octopath Traveler would launch on Xbox through Game Pass.

Minari’s Steven Yeun Teams With Ali Wong For New TV Show

Comedian and actor Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe, Tuca & Bertie) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) are co-executive producing a new series, according to Deadline. What’s not yet clear is whether Wong and Yeun will also co-star, but that would be a safe–though still unconfirmed–guess as of this writing.

The untitled series is a dramedy spanning 10 episodes, each 30 minutes in length, and is also being created and showrun by Lee Sung Jin. It’s being billed as a limited series, and Jin’s resume suggests whatever this show actually is, it should be promising and pretty interesting: Jin is co-executive producer on the polarizing but surprisingly vulnerable FXX comedy Dave about a white rapper and has also worked on HBO’s Silicon Valley, FX’s Singularity, and Amazon’s Undone. As if those aren’t enough credits to convey Jin’s prolific nature and great track record, he’s also working on the Showtime pilot Omniverse with Kanye West, Jaden Smith, and Scooter Braun.

The series is being developed with A24, a production company Yeun just worked with on the immigrant drama Minari. Through Minari, Yeun recently made trailblazing Oscars history as the first ever Asian-American Best Actor nominee. More details are likely forthcoming soon, as Deadline is indicating the show is as of only last week being pitched around to different streaming services

This series will also be the first live-action show for Yeun since his character Glenn Rhee was (spoilers ahead) killed off on the long-running series The Walking Dead; it was a role that largely helped Yeun become a household name. On March 26, the actor will star as Mark Grayson in Amazon Prime’s Invincible, another series based on a comic by Robert Kirkman.

Joe Exotic Documentary Coming From Louis Theroux

A Joe Exotic documentary from prolific documentarian Louis Theroux is in development. The BBC has announced that Theroux will produce a feature-length documentary on Joseph Maldonado-Passage AKA Joe Exotic that has the tentative title Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic.

Theroux met Exotic 10 years ago when he was making a documentary called Most Dangerous Pets. “Heading back to Oklahoma, Theroux will explore what has happened since, with the big cat man now residing in a federal prison, having been found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot and multiple animal cruelty charges,” reads a line from the description (via THR).

Theroux said the story of Joe Exotic is “one of those quintessentially American stories,” featuring a cast of characters that are almost too larger-than-life to be real.

“I spent eight or nine days filming at the park back in 2011, over the course of three separate visits. I’d forgotten how much we shot until I went back into the footage during lockdown,” the filmmaker said. “It’s extraordinary how much was there. Since then the story just got stranger and bigger, and in going back at the end of last year I uncovered a real-life drama that took me in directions I never could have expected.”

The BBC’s new documentary doesn’t have a release date yet. It’s one of many new projects focused on Joe Exotic in the works–another one for Amazon has Nicolas Cage playing Exotic. In another production, SNL’s Kate McKinnon will play Carole Baskin.

Investigation Finds No Evidence of Wrongdoing By Riot Games CEO

An investigation commissioned by League of Legends and Valorant publisher Riot Games amid accusations of misconduct by CEO Nicolas Laurent has concluded, finding no evidence of wrongdoing and recommending no sanctions.

Washington Post reports that the news was shared internally to Riot employees along with a statement from Laurent, stating unequivocally that the accusations are not true. “Nothing of that nature, or even remotely close to it, ever happened.”

The findings were announced the same day that Riot Games filed a request to speed up court proceedings in the pending suit filed by a former executive assistant, Sharon O’Donnell. Riot has filed an application to the Los Angeles County Superior Court to set a status conference to discuss how the case should proceed.

O’Donnell had alleged unwanted sexual advances and harassment, including conditioning her continued employment on reciprocation of those advances. The filing from Riot’s lawyers deny this, and cite the “years’ worth of emails and texts” investigated by the third-party as lacking any evidence of her specific accusations.

O’Donnell’s legal team has issued a response, stating that the paperwork filed by Riot’s lawyers is untrue and promising to file its own response with the court soon.

The special committee consisted of three members as part of Riot’s board of directors. The only publicly named member was Youngme Moon, a professor at Harvard Business School. The other two are unnamed executives at Riot Games owner Tencent.

“We concluded that there was no evidence that Laurent harassed, discriminated, or retaliated against the plaintiff,” read a statement from the panel. “We have therefore reached the conclusion that, at the current time … no action should be taken against Laurent.”

The committee went on to state that it recognizes that power dynamics can impact these business relationships in ways that are difficult to assess, but “in this case, we were simply unable to find any evidence that would justify a sanction of any kind against Laurent.”

This comes just after Alienware terminated its sponsorship contract with League of Legends, reportedly citing issues with the company’s public image due to the harassment allegations.

Doom Has Plenty Of Stories To Tell Despite Current Saga’s Conclusion

This week’s release of The Ancient Gods: Part Two expansion in Doom Eternal brings to a close a story arc that began in 2016’s Doom reboot, but what comes next? Speaking to Polygon, Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin revealed that while the current saga of the Doom Slayer will wrap up in the latest DLC, there are still plenty of stories left to tell about that character in that universe, though, and possibly through a different lens, as well.

“Could we tell a story about when [the Doom Slayer] first came to that place with the Sentinels, almost like a more medieval setting, a fantasy setting?” Martin asked Polygon. “I think as you play the DLC, too, you’ll see lots of hints of what we could do moving forward. Maybe even in the future. Again, our hero is somewhat timeless–I mean, literally, he’s immortal. So we could tell all kinds of stories. It’s as if Sam Raimi was given a Transformers budget to go make a sequel to The Evil Dead–that’s what Doom feels like, to us.”

Martin also had plenty more to say about the new Sentinel Hammer in the DLC, which he explained is capable of instantly killing smaller enemies and stunning larger ones. You can read more about how the addition of the hammer means that “Sh** is going to hit the fan” in our interview.

If you’re curious to try out Doom Eternal and you have Xbox Game Pass, now is as good as ever to grab it as it was one of the 20 titles from Bethesda that was added to Xbox Game Pass after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax. If you’d prefer to return to one of Doom’s spookier outings, Doom 3 VR is also in development at id Software.

Beyond that, the next game in the series might see a female Doom Slayer pick up the iconic shotgun as Id Software is considering shaking the series up even further.

In addition to the increased Pokemon spawns, different Pokemon will be featured in Raids. Slowpoke, Tynamo, and others will appear in one-star Raids, while Swellow, Pelipper, and more will serve as three-star Raid bosses. Therian Forme Thundurus will also continue appearing in five-star Raids, and Mega Houndoom, Mega Manectric, and Mega Abomasnow will be featured in Mega Raids.

Niantic will also hold two mini-events during Weather Week. First, Pokemon that enjoy rainy weather–like Vaporeon, Lotad, and Stunfisk–will appear more frequently from March 24-27. After that, Pokemon that are fond of windy weather–such as Skarmory, Taillow, and Pidove–will appear more frequently from March 27-29. There will also be exclusive Field and Timed Research tasks to complete throughout the event, and you’ll earn extra Stardust each time you catch a Pokemon with weather boost.

The Weather Week event runs until 8 PM local time on March 29. You can read more details about it on the official Pokemon Go blog.

In the meantime, Pokemon Go’s Charge Up event is underway until March 22. Therian Forme Thundurus is also appearing in five-star Raids until March 30, after which point it will be replaced by the debuting Therian Forme Tornadus.

Xbox Game Pass For PC Adds EA Play Tomorrow, Giving Subscribers 60+ More Free Games

Xbox Game Pass for PC is getting even better, as Microsoft has announced that EA Play will be rolled into the subscription service starting tomorrow, March 18. The service will officially go live at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET that day.

At that time, Xbox Game Pass PC and Ultimate subscribers can play all the titles on EA Play, the service formerly known as EA Access. Subscribers not only get access to a catalog of 60+ games that include Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Titanfall 2, and numerous entries in the Battlefield and Madden franchises, but they also get in-game rewards every month for select titles. March 18 is also the day that Star Wars: Squadrons comes to Game Pass, on both PC and console.

The video below provides a full walkthrough of how to get started. But in short, PC users must download the EA Desktop app, sign in with an EA Account (or create one), and then link this account to an Xbox account. From there you will be directed to the Xbox App for PC to get started.

If you’re new to Game Pass, you can sign up for only $1 for the first month. You might be wondering how it makes business sense for EA to offer EA Play in Game Pass at no extra charge. Well, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said EA cut a deal with Microsoft.

“We don’t do anything for free. I think the economics work for both of us and that’s how we’ve approached it,” Jorgensen said.

In a blog post, Microsoft said it thanks fans for their patience as they awaited the launch of EA Play for Game Pass on PC. EA Play was rolled into Ultimate on console back in 2020. EA Play was scheduled to come to PC through Game Pass earlier, but it was delayed.

A Game Pass Ultimate subscription includes the console and PC versions of the service.

Mortal Kombat Director Tried to Avoid Green Screen as Much as Possible

When the first trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie premiered, the consensus seemed to be that it looked like an actual, bloody, martial arts, action film. And according to director Simon McQuoid, he tried to film the movie with as little green screen as possible.

“I don’t like too much green screen,” McQuoid said during a group interview ahead of SXSW.” Even then there is a bit of it in the film, you’ll see some things just couldn’t avoid, but I try and avoid it and I try and make stuff.”

McQuoid says filming the movie as cinematically as possible “felt right” for what he wanted to do with the movie. “And so, this I felt very privileged to have this opportunity to sort of bring these beloved characters to life and respect the material and turn it into this big movie.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/19/mortal-kombat-movie-vs-game-characters-compared”]

Up until Mortal Kombat, McQuoid was best known for his commercial work, including a series of live-action commercials for PlayStation that feature recognizable heroes from major PlayStation games like Uncharted. McQuoid says this informed his desire to bring cinematic quality to a video game adaptation.

“I’ve done several video game commercials, which I’d always… wanted them to have a scale to them that felt big and elegant and sort of have a beauty within them, but have a sort of cinematic quality to them,” says McQuoid.

“So I did a thing for PlayStation where there were lots of beloved PlayStation characters… I love having the opportunity to sort of bring really well-known characters to life so they feel real and connective to the audience and [Mortal Kombat] was just another version of that.”

Mortal Kombat looks to tell the classic Mortal Kombat story in which various martial artists will gather together and partake in a deadly tournament to determine the fate of Earth. Familiar characters like Sonya Blade, Raiden, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion will be there to face off in R-rated combat.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2011/10/05/the-long-live-play-ad”]

McQuoid spoke about the importance of respecting the DNA of the franchise, which means that battles weren’t just gory for the sake of blood, but kept with the martial arts of the franchise. The devotion to authenticity also led to an inclusive, mostly Asian cast to embody Mortal Kombat’s iconic cast.

Mortal Kombat will be released on HBO Max as part of the streaming platform’s plan to release all of WarnerMedia’s 2021 theatrical film slate onto HBO Max. The debut trailer for Mortal Kombat has already broken viewership records for R-Rated trailers.

How Mortal Kombat’s Movie Respects the Game’s Legacy

The history of Mortal Kombat spans nearly three decades, eleven mainline games, and one of the most massive and passionate fanbases in video games. That’s a lot of pressure for the cast and crew of the upcoming Mortal Kombat, but going off of my own viewing of the first 13 minutes of the film, and a recent roundtable interview with director Simon McQuoid and producer Todd Garner, it seems like the cinematic fates of Earthrealm, Outworld, and Netherrealm are in the hands of people who love and understand what makes Mortal Kombat so beloved.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=mortal-kombat-2021-movie-images&captions=true”]

One of the main things that Mortal Kombat is known for, of course, is its violence. And that’s not something that the movie is shying away from.

“I just wanted to do Mortal Kombat justice,” said McQuoid. “It was about studying and looking at what the fundamental ingredients are to Mortal Kombat. What are the key strands of DNA that make this what it is. So I spent a lot of time thinking about that, so that stylistically it ended up in the right place. One of those [key strands of DNA] is the brutality of it. What I liked about the blood aspect is that we could be authentic. We didn’t have to hold back on the fights. If there was a fight going on, someone got stamped through the head, blood probably would burst out the back, and we could do that. New Line deserves a lot of credit because they always wanted to do it justice as well.”

[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=I%20just%20wanted%20to%20do%20Mortal%20Kombat%20justice”]

And sure enough, the extended scene I watched did not pull back on the violence, but it’s also important to note that it was more than just bloodshed. It opens on the Hasashi Compound in the year 1617, where Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the man who will eventually become the yellow clad spectre of vengeance, Scorpion, shares a tender moment with his family before he goes out to collect some water from the river. We get to see a brief bit of the Hasashi family life before it gets torn apart due to the attack of Bi-Han (Joe Taslim) and the Lin Kuei clan.

“There’s a difference between violence for violence’s sake… and violence [that’s] motivated by characters you love and care about and worry about. We’re trying to do that,” said Garner. “We’re trying to make a movie where you care about the people. It’s grounded, it has a realistic tone to it, and the violence comes from the rules of the world we’ve established, but you’re not just trying to make torture porn. You’re trying to do something that is faithful to the IP, but also comes from a motivated and grounded place that is motivated by real characters that feel like they’ve lived real lives up to this moment.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/19/mortal-kombat-movie-vs-game-characters-compared”]

Once the fighting does begin, that’s when the movie earns its R rating. Hanzo straps a gardening kunai to a rope to form his trademark spear, and starts absolutely tearing through a crowd of Lin Kuei clansmen, at one point piercing clean through a man’s head before yanking him to the ground and ripping the blade out with a healthy spurt of blood erupting from his skull.

One of the most notable aspects about Mortal Kombat’s absolutely enormous roster of characters over the years is the diversity of cultures and martial arts featured within it, from Japanese ninjas to Chinese monks to American special forces and Australian thugs, and casting actors that were not only authentic to that spread of nationalities and cultures, but also could fight, was extremely important to both McQuoid and Garner.

“It’s important because it’s the right thing to do. It’s that simple. To make these the best versions of these characters, that’s what we needed to do,” said McQuoid. “The thing about Mortal Kombat is its rich textural mixture of really great things. Many different cultures, and that’s a really important ingredient as we analysed it. It didn’t cross anyone’s mind at any point that we were doing it any other way. Perhaps the guys at New Line are just braver than most. We didn’t even talk about it much because it was like, ‘Obviously, that’s what we’re doing.’ When I talked to New Line for the first time and I could see their respect for it, I was like ‘well, this is great, because this is how I want to do it and how we all want to do it.’ It was easy because it was the right thing to do. It would have been silly to do it any other way.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=meet-the-cast-of-the-mortal-kombat-reboot-movie&captions=true”]

Garner said that the first thing they told Warners out of the gate was that not only was the movie going to be diverse, but that the cast also needed to know how to fight. Action scenes that had to be cut in a way that hides the fact that a stunt double was being used during the fight just wouldn’t work with the kind of movie that they had wanted to make. This shrunk the talent pool considerably, but Garner feels like it was worth it.

“It took a while, and it’s to Simon’s credit, he’s the most patient man, and he did it,” said Garner. “Everyone says that this is a video game movie, and OK, [but] it’s a martial arts movie.”

While video game adaptations certainly have gotten better over the most recent years, there’s certainly a history of disappointing adaptations. McQuoid’s thought on the secret to making a good video game adaptation is simple, but refreshing to hear.

[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=The%20intent%20was%20to%20respect%20the%20material.%20That%20had%20to%20be%20first%20and%20foremost.”]

“The intent was to respect the material. That had to be first and foremost. It was to treat the game structurally like a film. Not to borrow the wrong things from the video game. From what I’ve observed from when video game films don’t do so well, it’s because they don’t respect the material,” said McQuoid. “I have great respect for video games and video game companies and video game characters. There’s a reason people love these video games. They immerse people far better in many cases than movies can. But I think also understanding what a film can give you that a video game can’t to make things totally real. To see Scorpion in full real samurai Japanese-inspired, richly led, richly textured [armor] that matters. And that’s something that  we can bring in a film that couldn’t be done in a video game, because it’s not real.”

Mortal Kombat will be released on HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
