Age of Empires 4: The Final Preview

The first word that comes to mind having played around a dozen hours of Age of Empires 4’s stress test is “familiar.” In almost every way that matters, it’s more like a ground-up remake of Age of Empires 2 with modern graphics and a much better user experience, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are some small tweaks, like being able to hide units in forests. And the design of the four factions I played, at least on a macro level, reflect more modern sensibilities than Age 4’s august forebears. But, for better or for worse, Relic is clearly not taking a lot of chances to disrupt the basic formula here.

To be fair, the four playable factions in this build were among the most conventional in Age of Empires 4. The English, specifically, have been designed to feel the most familiar to legacy players. We haven’t yet been able to get our hands on the nomadic Mongols or the versatile Rus, which may mix things up a bit more like I was hoping.

Same Age, Different Empires

Out of the factions available, the Chinese were probably the most distinct and my overall favorite. Their support unit, the Imperial Official, can be used to passively increase your gold income by collecting taxes that slowly build up in all of your base structures, or by directly supervising specific buildings to increase their output. You’re limited to four at any given time, meaning it never became a micromanagement nightmare, and I really liked how I could take a very direct hand in how I used them, or just let them wander off and do their own thing. It’s a mechanic that rewards investing your attention, but doesn’t harshly punish you for forgetting it exists.

For better or for worse, Relic is clearly not taking a lot of chances to disrupt the basic formula here.

The Abbasids and the Holy Roman Empire both encourage making very dense urban cores. For the former, each building connected in an unbroken chain to your main tech center, the House of Wisdom, contributes to unlocking Golden Ages which boost your economy significantly. In the case of the latter, landmarks can be built that increase the durability of all structures in their radius and their town centers even have an Emergency Repair ability that will restore some health to nearby buildings without having to use villagers.

Stiff Upper Lip

In contrast, the English seem best suited to playing wide. Their longbowmen have increased range over other archers, their keeps act as a combination barracks, archery range, and stable, and units close to any of their defensive structures will get a temporary attack bonus any time an enemy comes within a certain radius of the structure. They definitely feel the most like a classic Age of Empires 2 faction, with a strong ability to project map control but nothing especially unique in terms of economic gameplay.

How you feel about Age of Empires 4 is going to depend heavily on how interested you are in a very polished, faithful re-imagining of a 22-year-old RTS.

The army list for each faction is fairly small and straightforward, with a few types of melee infantry, a few different ranged troops (including gunpowder units in the capstone Imperial Age), cavalry, and a nice assortment of siege weapons. Each also has at least one unique unit, like the Chinese Zhuge Nu which trades the armor piercing of a regular crossbowman for higher rate of fire. There are some other minor differences, too. The English and Holy Roman Empire get access to heavy infantry earlier than the other factions, to model their Germanic style of shock warfare. But in exchange, the Abbasids can research the phalanx, making their spearmen more competitive against other types of infantry.

Not So Total War

When these units meet on the battlefield, it’s time to party like it’s 1999. You’re still limited to 200 population, split as you like between civilians and soldiers. Units are trained one at a time, with the exception of one late-game building for the HRE that can build five. This scale felt epic and compelling when I was a kid playing on a Pentium, but after decades of Total War, these battles often feel more like skirmishes. I found myself wishing that maybe they would have at least made the base military unit a squad of a few fighters rather than an individual, to give the illusion of greater grandeur. The graphics are definitely nice, but they’re not going to drop any jaws in this day and age – especially the unit models, which are just plainly underwhelming.

From what I’ve seen so far, how you feel about Age of Empires 4 is going to depend heavily on how interested you are in a very polished, faithful re-imagining of a 22-year-old RTS. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy myself. I definitely smiled as I pulled off an ambush using high ground or defended the Great Wall of China with fire and steel. And I don’t miss how bloated Age of Empires 3 seems in comparison, as it tried to cram in way too many ideas at once. But there’s very little that feels truly new here. Maybe when I get my hands on the Mongol hordes, all of that will change.

Marvel’s Next TV Series Is About an Incredibly Violent Monkey, and It’s Out Soon

Marvel’s Hit-Monkey was given a release date, character details, and a teaser trailer in a press release on Monday. Hit-Monkey will premiere on Hulu on November 17, 2021. All 10 episodes will premiere at once, according to an article on Marvel.com.

The series is created by Will Speck and Josh Gordon. The pair previously directed the Will Ferrell movie Blades of Glory and the Jason Bateman comedy Office Christmas Party.

Actors George Takei, Ally Maki, and Nobi Nakanishi will also be featured in the series along with Office Christmas Party actress Olivia Munn. Maki plays Haruka, a cop who recently came to Tokyo on a mission to clean up the city. Her partner, Ito, will be played by Nakanishi. Pokemon Unite Is Celebrating 9 Million Downloads With Free Aeos Tickets

Pokemon Unite is doing well ahead of its launch on mobile, with more than 9 million players having downloaded the pocket monster-themed MOBA so far on Nintendo Switch. To celebrate, developer TiMi Studio Group is giving players 2,000 Aeos Tickets starting on September 29.

What are Aeos Tickets, exactly? They can be used to purchase trainer cosmetics like new clothes, as well to purchase held items and held item upgrades that are used by Pokemon in battle. For players who don’t want to spend cold hard cash to acquire better held items, TiMi Studio’s gift will be a welcome bonus.

Pokemon Unite, which is free-to-play, is set to release on mobile platforms September 22. Some of the game’s most recent patches brought series buffs to characters like Blissey, while nerfing characters like Snorlax. Two new Pokemon will soon be introduced to the game in the form of Mamoswine and Sylveon.

The game has come under fire for certain elements many players say are “pay-to-win,” specifically referring to the ability to purchase better, power-boosting held items with real money. While giving all players 2,000 Aeos Tickets to do with as they see fit is a nice way to bridge the gap between players who are willing to pay real money for upgrades and those who aren’t, TiMi Group has thus far failed to address the issue.

If you’re looking to step up your game in Pokemon Unite, be sure to check out our tier list of the best Pokemon to use and and tips-and-tricks guide for making the best Pokemon builds.

Latest Nvidia Driver Adds DLSS To 28 Games, Windows 11 Support

Nvidia has been steadily growing its library of games that make use of DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, to help improve performance across a wide range of compatible cards. It’s still incredibly impressive technology, and arguably one of the best reasons to stick with Nvidia’s latest GPU offerings over AMD. And today, that list got substantially larger thanks to Unreal Engine.

Unreal Engine had its DLSS plugin released several months ago, and the benefits are already being felt today. A total of 28 new games are getting DLSS support with Nvidia’s latest Game Ready Driver for GeForce GPUs, bringing the total to over 100 games. New games with DLSS support include the imminent Alan Wake Remastered, Industria, and Severed Steel, among many others.

Now Playing: Alan Wake Remastered Trailer | Playstation Showcase 2021

Nvidia provided some internal testing figures for Alan Wake Remastered, showing how its DLSS performance settings can double frame rates on most GPUs that support it. On an RTX 2080 Ti, for example, the game jumps from just over 70fps to 120fps at 4K and max quality settings thanks to DLSS, which renders the game at a lower internal resolution and then reconstructs it using deep learning algorithms.

Nvidia released its DLSS plugin for Unreal Engine 4, Unreal Engine 5, and Unity earlier this year. This means that, like today, there are bound to be far more DLSS-enabled titles in the near future, and not just big-budget releases. This is great for anyone using a compatible GPU, as it extends the life of your hardware in the midst of the on-going semiconductor shortage which has made purchasing a new GPU very difficult.

The Game Ready Driver today is also the first official one for Windows 11, which Microsoft will launch on October 5. Many users are already testing Windows 11, but today’s driver ensures that the entire list of DLSS titles is compatible with Microsoft’s latest OS. The driver is also adding day-one support for new releases such as Diablo II: Resurrected, Far Cry 6, New World, and more. You can download the driver through GeForce Experience or right here.

Hackers Are Already Invading Call Of Duty: Vanguard

Call of Duty: Vanguard‘s final beta weekend is still live and extended until September 22 across all platforms, but players are already facing off against hackers. This is Call of Duty: Vanguard’s second multiplayer beta weekend, and it added cross-play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Unfortunately, it also brought the nefarious hackers, who are ruining matches with the usual mix of cheats, such as aimbot and wallhacks to see and shoot opponents through walls. Some players are also posting clips of hackers ending the matches early, which are abruptly concluded with the message that the host ended the game.

Activision continuously works to ban cheaters in Call of Duty, with over 100,000 accounts already banned, and it seems players who have already been hardware banned for Warzone are finding they are also banned in the Vanguard beta. While this does help to reduce the number of cheaters, players are still encountering plenty of hackers in Call of Duty.

Hacking in the Vanguard beta is very concerning, but hopefully the cheaters will be better kept at bay once Call of Duty’s new anti-cheat system arrives later this year with integration of the new Warzone Pacific map.

The first beta weekend already provided developers feedback for working to improve Vanguard’s audio and visual issues, and a few changes were implemented to help visibility for this second beta weekend. Players were able to try a range of maps and modes, which includes Vanguard’s new Gunfight-style Champion Hill mode.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will arrive on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC on November 5. The fall release remains on schedule as Activision Blizzard faces a lawsuit from the state of California over alleged harassment and discrimination against women.

Sea of Thieves Season 4 Trailer Shows There Is Plenty To Plunder Under The Sea

Sea of Thieves’ latest season is on the horizon, and this time it will take players into the dark depths of the sea to battle against the game’s Siren enemies.

As a new trailer details, Season 4 will add multiple new activities for players to engage with, each taking place underneath the waves. New Siren shrines have been added to the map for players to explore. Each shrine is a unique experience, and treasure awaits players who can overcome the challenges within.

For players looking for a more combat-focused experience, Siren Treasuries will task players with overcoming waves of Siren enemies in order to secure the coveted loot inside. Carrying so much treasure from the bottom of the ocean to the surface certainly sounds time consuming, so players can actually store treasure found under the ocean at nearby Merfolk statues. Once players return to the surface, the treasure can then be claimed from a helpful Merfolk and placed onto a player’s ship.

A new voyage, which can be found in a message-in-a-bottle, will see players diving into the depths once more to retrieve a mysterious item known as the Breath of the Sea. It’s unclear what this ancient relic is, but it certainly fetches a high price from the game’s various trading companies.

And, of course, a new season means a new plunder pass, with numerous free and paid rewards for players to unlock. Numerous new cosmetics and emotes will be coming to the game as part of the plunder pass as well as to the Pirate Emporium, the game’s premium cosmetic store. Sea of Thieves Season 4 arrives September 23 as a free update.

The game’s new Siren-themed season and activities comes after the introduction of the new enemy faction in Sea of Thieves’ previous season, which coincided with the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed expansion A Pirate’s Life. Sea of Thieves continues to ride the waves of success more than three years after its release. In June, Sea of Thieves had its biggest month ever, with more than 4.8 million active players sailing the seas.

Style Comes To Fortnite With Balenciaga Collaboration

Fortnite and Balenciaga–the fashion label that dressed Rihanna at the Met Gala–are teaming up to release in-game digital apparel and a corresponding real-life collection as well. The Fortnite x Balenciaga collaboration arrives in-game on September 20 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET.

The digital looks are inspired by “authentic archival looks” from Balenciaga and consist of four outfits. Other accessories like pickaxes in sneaker shapes, gliders, wraps, emotes, and free sprays will also be available.

In Fortnite, there will also be a Strange Times Featured Hub created by community members that hosts a virtual Balenciaga store modeled after real ones. The hub will be live from September 21 to September 28. You can pick up collab items from this “storefront,” or the usual in-game store for–as of this time–an unknown amount. Prices have not been revealed yet.

In the collab’s real-life counterpart, you can get the merch at the Balenciaga online store right now. Purchasing the real-life merch will automatically get you the in-game equivalent, but be prepared to spend $725 for a Fortnite branded white hoodie and $2,050 for a “gamer shirt.”

Over at the Unreal Engine blog, Epic Games revealed the process behind creating the collab items. The Fortnite teams had access to 3D scans of Balenciaga’s clothing and used Triple S Sneakers’ CAD info to recreate the in-game equivalent. According to Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasali, the fashion brand’s collaboration with Epic Games started with Balenciaga’s own game built on Unreal Engine called Afterworld, made for the Fall 2021 collection.

It’s not the first luxury fashion crossover with a video game. Louis Vuitton dressed Final Fantasy’s Lightning in 2016. Gucci also held a virtual showcase in Roblox and partnered with Roblox to create in-game collaboration items.

PS5 And Xbox Series X Will Reportedly Be Sold In Best Buy Stores This Week

If you’ve been following news of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, you know that the consoles are still extremely difficult to find in stock. While retailers have been selling a handful of consoles online per week, they’ve been even rarer at physical stores. According to a new report, though, Best Buy may be preparing to sell the PS5 and Xbox Series X at some of its stores this week.

According to reporting from TechRadar, Best Buy will have stock of the Xbox Series X and the disc drive version of the PS5 in stores on Thursday, September 24, which will be for the first time in over a month. If the retailer lets customers actually purchase a PS5 or Xbox Series X in person (as opposed to ordering it online ahead of pick up), it would be one of the first instances of a major chain selling them in stores since last year.

No Caption Provided

TechRadar’s story suggests that Best Buy still has not indicated whether it will allow people to buy them in stores. Previously, the retailer has made customers buy them online and wait a few days before picking them up in person; however, Best Buy’s recent stockpiling of inventory may be in preparation for in-store shopping. Regardless, the report says Best Buy is planning on putting the consoles on sale on Thursday, September 24. This means you might have to get ready to line up Thursday morning for your shot at getting your hands on one.

The current generation of consoles has faced a challenging combination of low stock and high demand, driven in large part by worldwide microchip shortages and ongoing logistics difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Retailers tend to put units on sale seemingly randomly, and bots and scalpers have further added to the low stock. For more information on how to navigate the labyrinthian processes for buying the consoles, be sure to check our PS5 guide and Xbox Series X|S guide.

Trailer For Tom Hanks’ Finch Has Him Cast Away In Apocalyptic Future

Tom Hanks reunites with producer/director Robert Zemeckis with Apple TV+’s upcoming film, Finch. Originally scheduled for a theatrical release in October 2020, Apple acquired the film this past August and is releasing it on its streaming platform on November 5.

Previously tiled Bios, Finch stars Tom Hanks as a lone survivor with his dog, but after he builds a robot, voiced by actor Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class, Twin Peaks) he sets off on a journey to try and find a new home for the three of them. Check out the first trailer below.

Finch is directed by Emmy-winner and television director Miguel Sapochnik, who is mostly known for some of the most important, and critically-acclaimed, episodes of Game of Thrones. Finch is only his second feature film and the first in over a decade. Sapochnik will be returning to Game of Thrones as he is directing the first episode of House of the Dragon.

The film also stars Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Marie Wagenman, Christopher Farrar, Oscar Avila, and Kennedi Butler. It’s written by newcomer Craig Luck and legendary sci-fi producer Ivor Powell (Alien, Blade Runner).

With Apple’s big wins at the Emmy Awards this year, and having already acquired Hanks’ WWII drama Greyhound last year, they’re really starting to position themselves as a powerhouse in the platform wars.
