Dune has officially made its international debut in theaters in 24 markets with total earnings of $36.8 million. Furthermore, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has not only reached $320 million overseas, but it has also secured a third-straight domestic box office win.

While Dune doesn’t release in North America in theaters and on HBO Max until October 22, it is off to a promising start overseas as it has ranked #1 in “virtually all markets” it has appeared in. Additionally, it is “tracking +4% ahead of TENET, +33% ahead of BLACK WIDOW, +52% ahead of BLADERUNNER 2049, +58% ahead of SHANG-CHI and +80% ahead of GODZILLA VS. KONG.”

Dune also broke pandemic-era box office records in IMAX theaters in 10 territories including Russia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Ukraine, Hong Kong, and Singapore. These 142 IMAX screens accounted for “roughly 10% of the total weekend” and had a “$25k per screen average.”

As reported by Box Office Mojo, Shang-Chi has continued its domestic box office streak and held on to the top spot for the third time with $21 million. It saw a 37.5% drop from last week and handily defeated Free Guy’s $5.2 million.

In third place, Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho made its theatrical debut with $4.5 million. Cry Macho is also available on HBO Max. Rounding out the top five are Candyman’s $3.5 million and Malignant’s $2.6 million.

Howard Shore, the Oscar-winning composer behind Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, is said to be in talks to return to Middle-earth for the new Amazon series.

As reported by Deadline, this would surely be a most welcome addition for fans of the movies, as Peter Jackson nor the original cast members are known to be joining the project. Shore won three Academy Awards for his work The Lord of the Rings, including for Best Original Score for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King and the Best Original Song award for “Into the West.”

Shore’s impressive credits also include The Hobbit trilogy, The Departed, The Aviator, Dogma, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Silence of the Lambs, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and so many more.

The new, untitled Amazon series set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien has already finished principal photography for season one and is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022. The first season is said to have cost $465 million, which makes it the most expensive TV series yet.

While we’ve only seen one image from the show so far, Amazon has given fans of Middle-earth the plot synopsis to help with the wait;

“The new epic drama brings to screens for the very first time J.R.R. Tolkien’s fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. Beginning in a time of relative peace, thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.”

While we do know this series will return for season two, news recently broke that the show’s production would shift from New Zealand to the UK.

Lawrence Kasdan, the co-writer on both Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, is directing a new six-part docuseries on George Lucas and ILM (Industrial Light & Magic).

As reported by Collider, composer James Newton Howard revealed on Score: The Podcast that he recently finished scoring this new documentary and that he also may be involved in the upcoming sequel to Lucasfilm’s Willow that is headed to Disney+. The film is being executive produced by Lawrence’s son Jonathan.

Bungie has added matchmaking assistance to Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris mode to make it more welcoming for a wider range of players, but it hasn’t launched without its own fair share of controversy.

For those unaware, Trials of Osiris is a high-risk, high-reward competitive 3v3 PvP mode in Destiny 2 that has players attempting to go Flawless by winning seven matches in a row. By doing so, players gain access to exclusive rewards in the Lighthouse.

As reported by Kotaku, the details of this matchmaking change to Trials of Osiris were shared in the latest This Week At Bungie, and are part of Trials of Osiris’ revamp following the mode being offline for a bit.

The first of these changes is the addition of a “flawless pool” that will put players who achieve the Flawless milestone by going 7-0 into a matchmaking pool with others who have done the same. Players will remain in this pool until the game’s weekly reset.

For those who are having some troubles in Trials of Osiris, Bungie will also offer “matchmaking help” until they start winning again. Luckily, the temporary nature of this change will hopefully help with those looking to game the system.

“We are enabling some matchmaking help if someone runs into several blowout matches,” Bungie community manager Cozmo_BNG wrote. “This temporary help mechanic clears up once they start winning again, so don’t think someone will cheese a flawless by tanking for a few games and then have a weekend of smooth sailing.”

There are those, like @Benjjjyy on Twitter, who feel that this may “discourage players who have gone flawless from ever playing again.” It could also encourage certain players to manipulate the system by resetting on six wins so they can avoid being placed in this Flawless pool.

This new system, according to Cozmo, is a work-in-progress and will be adjusted in the future if needed.

“We will be watching both analytics and feedback – and trying to balance fast matches with good matches across the playerbase,” Cozmo said. “Definitely not set in stone forever.”

Despite Deltarune: Chapter 2 being released by itself, series creator Toby Fox has said that his goal is to have Chapters 3, 4, and 5 arrive at the same time.

Toby Fox shared the news on Deltarune.com following the release of Deltarune: Chapter 2 and said that, while he had originally planned on releasing new chapters only when all of them were finished, he realized that “it’s hard both for creators and fans to go a long time without a release.”

However, he is now focused on completing Chapters 3, 4, and 5 and will launch the complete game (Chapters 1-5) at a currently unknown price that will be more than Undertale, which currently costs $14.99.

Fox released both Deltarune Chapter 1 and 2 for free and has asked that players (who can afford it!) should buy another indie game to support smaller developers. Additionally, those who want to support Toby Fox can purchase the soundtracks to Undertale and both Deltarune chapters from Bandcamp.

“Just one request – please remember, games like this aren’t normally free,” Fox wrote. “If you can afford it, spend the money you saved from getting this game for free by supporting other indie devs. If you really want to give me money, buy the soundtrack from Bandcamp. Thank you.”

Deltarune: Chapter 2’s launch was a surprising one that was announced at Undertale’s 6th-anniversary celebration event only a few days ago. Deltarune, according to Fox, was much harder to develop for than Undertale due to “the complexity of new systems, plotlines, and graphics.”

Disney+ has released two TV spots showcasing its diverse lineup of original programming, which has earned the streaming platform an impressive 71 Emmy nominations.

Some of the shows earning multiple nominations include Season 2 of The Mandalorian with 24 nominations and WandaVision with 23, the latter of which earned Marvel Studios its first Emmy awards for narrative (half-hour) production design, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, and original music and lyrics category for ‘Agatha All Along’ during the Creative Arts Emmys virtual presentation.

In our recent State of Streaming 3.0 initiative, we explained the importance of intellectual property, or “IP” for short, which can make or break a company’s chance at surviving the Streaming Wars.
