SimCity Creator Will Wright Announces New Game Proxi

Proxi, a new mobile game from legendary game designer Will Wright, was revealed today during Unity’s keynote at Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018.

Wright and developer Gallium Artists are creating the new title with Unity. Like the previous games Wright has created—which include SimCity, The Sims, and Spore—Proxi is a simulation game. In this new mobile game, however, players will construct worlds from their memories.

At the outset, players will have a blank world they can then develop by using memories as their building blocks. Players can choose any topic they want—like “family adventures,” for example—and place it into the world, creating islands of connected memories that will form into 3D worlds over time.

Black Panther Is First Film Since Avatar to Rule Box Office for Five Weeks in a Row

Black Panther ruled the domestic box office for a fifth week in a row, something no MCU movie has done before, and a benchmark a movie has not achieved since 2009.

Black Panther’s estimated $27 million weekend earned the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest entry the No. 1 spot yet again at the box office, becoming the first film to do so since Avatar in 2009. (That film went on to hold the domestic box office top spot for seven weeks.)

No other superhero film has remained atop the box office for five or more weeks, and only Avatar, Titanic, and The Sixth Sense have done so in the last 20 years.

Mortal Kombat Will Soon Be Available on Netflix

In 1995, New Line Cinema brought Mortal Kombat to the big screen. The live-action adaptation of the popular video game was filled with dazzling displays of martial arts and special effects that allowed iconic characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion to showcase all of their unique abilities. Mortal Kombat will be available to stream on Netflix (in the United States) on April 1st.

Spielberg Confirms Ready Player One Has Star Wars References

Ready Player One is out in theaters in a couple of weeks, director Steven Spielberg has confirmed Star Wars references will indeed be in the film.

AV Club reports there was some confusion in the press regarding whether or not Disney would allow Spielberg to use references to the franchise, but Fandango’s Erik Davis shared a snippet of an interview with the director, who confirms we’ll see Star Wars Easter eggs, like R2-D2 and an X-Wing.

Xbox Partners With An Australian Pirate Band For A Cool Sea Of Thieves Promo

Xbox ANZ, the gaming giant’s Australia/New Zealand division, has launched a unique promotion to support the launch of Sea of Thieves this week on Xbox One and PC. The company has partnered up with Australian pirate band Captain Hellfire & The Wretched Brethren to create what Microsoft is calling the first-ever “sing us a shanty” service.

As part of this, gamers in Australia and New Zealand will be able to request a personalised song from the Aussie pirate band, with the shanties broadcast via Facebook, Mixer, and Twitch. Here’s how it works:

On March 24 and 25, gamers in Australia and New Zealand can watch the Xbox ANZ Facebook page to find out ho to book a session through Eventbrite. The songs will then be played in the above-mentioned channels from 10 AM to 6 PM AEDT on March 24 and 25. The songs will be “personalised to the unique adventures and stories created by gamers in the Sea of Thieves multiplayer world,” Microsoft said.

“Sea of Thieves is already such an immersive game by design, so it’s only fitting we give fans the chance to get their very own shanties from a real-life pirate band,” Xbox Australia boss Jeremy Hinton said. “We’re really looking forward to seeing and hearing the tales of adventure on high seas, shanties and treasured stories created between players and the band.”

Sea of Thieves launches on March 20 for Xbox One and PC. You can buy it outright for $60 on either system or get it on Xbox One with an Xbox Game Pass subscription ($10/month). Starting with Sea of Thieves, all of Microsoft’s first-party games will launch into the Game Pass catalog, including the next Halo and Gears of War titles.
