Black Widow’s Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine: The Secret History of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Marvel Cameo

Warning: This article contains full spoilers for Black Widow as well as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier!

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

Black Widow is now out in theaters (and on Disney+ premier access), and the film’s post credits scene features the return of a character we first met in the penultimate episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Yes, it’s the return of Seinfeld and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is also known as Madame Hydra in the comics!

Given Contessa’s connections to other Marvel heroes like Nick Fury and the fact that such a big-name actress is playing her, it’s clear that she is going to be a big part of Phase 4 of the MCU as she seems to be assembling some kind of team of superheroes (villains?) at this point. To get an idea of what that might involve, let’s take a look at Contessa’s comic book roots and what could be in store for this intriguing and deadly character.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is also known as Madame Hydra in the comics.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina in Black Widow

In Black Widow’s mid-credits scene, which takes place sometime after Avengers: Endgame, and therefore after the death of Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, we see Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova visiting her “sister’s” grave. And then Val shows up, who Yelena clearly already knows and in fact works with. The Contessa gives Yelena her next assignment, and it’s none other than Clint Barton, who Yelena needs to take out (Belova is under the mistaken impression that Clint was the cause of Nat’s death). Which of course is setting up Pugh’s appearance on the upcoming Jeremy Renner/Hailee Steinfeld Hawkeye Disney+ series.

For the full details on Black Widow’s post credits scene, head here. But read on for more about the Contessa’s Marvel Comics history and how she might figure into the MCU moving forward.

Who Is Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine?

Her name is quite a mouthful, but Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is all about making a strong first impression. She certainly left an impression on Nick Fury. Created by writer/artist Jim Steranko, Contessa made her debut way back in 1967’s Strange Tales #159. At the time, Nick Fury wasn’t yet the mastermind SHIELD director we know him as today. Instead, he was simply Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD, and his globetrotting adventures were heavily inspired by the James Bond movies. And what fun is a Bond adventure without a Bond girl?

That’s basically where Contessa comes in, though describing her as “Nick Fury’s girlfriend” doesn’t begin to do her justice. She immediately wins Fury’s eye (no pun intended) with a well-placed judo throw during a sparring match, and the two have been practically inseparable ever since. As Fury works his way up the ranks, Contessa too becomes one of the agency’s most valuable assets. She’s also a member of SHIELD’s unfortunately named Femme Force, a team spearheaded by none other than Agent 13 herself, Sharon Carter. Along with former Howling Commando Dum Dum Dugan, Contessa is Fury’s most faithful ally.

Or so he thinks. It turns out there’s much more to her tragic back-story than even the Director of SHIELD could have guessed. Contessa may be wealthy, debonair and literal Italian nobility, but her childhood was anything but easy. As a girl she saw her parents executed for aiding a group of rebels. Though she claims to have joined SHIELD in order to give meaning to their deaths, in truth Contessa is a mole with ties to both Hydra and its Russian counterpart, Leviathan. Her love for Fury is genuine, but her goals don’t necessarily align with that of SHIELD or the US government.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Is Contessa a Hero or Villain?

Watching Louis-Dreyfus in action as Contessa, it can be tough to get a read on who she is and what she really wants. Why exactly is she trying to recruit the discredited former Captain America John Walker, who takes the name U.S. Agent by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Is John Walker being groomed to join a team of fanatical, patriotic killers? At this point we simply don’t know, but we do know that Contessa is a character who doesn’t neatly fit into the hero or villain categories.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/29/marvels-black-widow-review”]

For most of her comic book career, Contessa has been portrayed as a heroic agent of SHIELD. It was only in 2009’s Secret Warriors (a major source of inspiration for both Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter) that Fury learned the truth about the agency to which he devoted his life. SHIELD has always been a part of Hydra. At this point, Contessa reveals her true colors by claiming the mantle of Madame Hydra. But it’s not long before she betrays her Hydra allies by revealing herself to be truly aligned with Leviathan. So basically, she’s a double mole. By the end of the series, Fury manages to outwit his enemies and manipulates Hydra and Leviathan into destroying one another, leaving a defeated Contessa to rot in a German prison. But ever the romantic, Fury gives it all up to free “his girl” from a lifetime of captivity.

At this point, it’s hard to say whether Contessa will be a force for good or evil in the MCU. We don’t even know how much, if any, of her history with Nick Fury will be adapted for this universe. But as someone who suffered immense tragedy as a child, she seems to value those willing to cross moral and legal lines in order to do what needs to be done (as she sees it, anyway). That may explain the literal calling card she leaves with John Walker. One side is black and the other white, suggesting she believes good and evil are just two sides of the same coin.

Contessa’s MCU Future: Dark Avengers or Thunderbolts?

Again, we surely haven’t seen the last of Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa in the MCU. Around the time she debuted on Falcon and the Winter solider, we learned Contessa was originally intended to first show up in the Black Widow movie. Of course, because of the pandemic Black Widow was delayed. But now we can discern a pattern in her appearances: She’s recruiting super-folk! First John Walker, and now Yelena Belova. It certainly implies a connection to the seedy, espionage-focused underground of this superhero universe. Could she be part of the Leviathan organization? Leviathan already played a big part in Agent Carter, but that organization has had decades to regroup and plan its next move.

If Leviathan is coming back into play, Marvel may finally be gearing up to show us what state the espionage world is in following the collapse of SHIELD. As far as the movies would have us believe, Hydra was effectively dismantled in the year following the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Agents of SHIELD showed that wasn’t entirely the case, but it’s still unclear whether the movies will ever acknowledge the events of that series. The inclusion of the Darkhold in WandaVision may suggest neither Agents of SHIELD nor Hulu shows like Runaways are officially part of the MCU. So it’s anyone’s guess at this point whether Hydra might return. Perhaps Contessa will become Madame Hydra in the MCU, playing Hydra and the relatively young agency SWORD against one another for Leviathan’s benefit?

But now after Black Widow, it’s clear that Contessa is building a team, no matter who it is who she answers to. And maybe, unlike the Avengers, this team is all about getting results despite how much collateral damage they cause along the way.

Could we be seeing the seeds of the Thunderbolts in the Marvel Universe? A Thunderbolts movie/series has been heavily rumored for a while now. That team has undergone several incarnations in the comics, including as a very Suicide Squad-esque lineup of incarcerated villains. But the original Thunderbolts were a team of villains taking on new identities to fill the power vacuum left by the missing Avengers. That team was even led by Baron Zemo!

Finally, it’s also worth pointing out that Contessa is one of several Marvel characters who’s kidnapped and replaced by a Skrull impostor in 2008’s Secret Invasion. With a Nick Fury-centric Secret Invasion series in the works at Disney+, it may be no coincidence that Fury’s special lady-friend has suddenly made her first MCU appearance. Whatever Contessa’s motives, we can guarantee the rabbit hole goes very deep.

What do you think is going on with Contessa in the MCU? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Tag Heuer X Super Mario Watch Releasing Next Week

Nintendo has announced its latest crossover with a fashion brand, this time teaming up with luxury watchmaker Tag Heuer. Tag Heuer teased on Twitter that a Super Mario-themed watch will be revealed and released next week.

You can pre-register on Tag Heuer’s website to get early access to the limited-edition watch, which has yet to be revealed. The tweet says “Power-up on July 13” but the website has a countdown ending on July 15, so it’s unclear when exactly the watch will be available for purchase. The majority of watches on Tag Heuer’s website cost thousands of dollars, so it might be safe to expect this Super Mario watch to have a hefty price tag. If you’re really interested in buying the watch or at least want to see what it looks like, it’s probably worth pre-registering so you get alerted when it actually goes on sale.

Nintendo is no stranger to fashion crossovers, having previously worked with Uniqlo on an Animal Crossing: New Horizons collection and Levi’s on Mario-themed clothing, including the plumber’s signature overalls. However much the Tag Heuer Super Mario watch ends up costing, it has the potential to be one of the more premium crossover items Nintendo has had to date.

New Witcher Figures Revealed At WitcherCon

The celebration of all things Witcher, WitcherCon, has debuted new announcements about the ongoing Netflix show, video games, and of course, collectibles. A pair of new figures have debuted alongside the event, including one based on the Netflix show and another much more stylized take.

That figure will be available on December 1 for $50. Preorders should be available soon.

The second is a collaboration with iam8bit, and has a much more stylized, animated look. It stands at 10.6″ tall and is available to order now at the Netflix merch store for $250.

Lots of other Witcher announcements appeared at WitcherCon, including a release date for The Witcher season 2, a trailer for the Nightmare of the Wolf anime, and a tease for Netflix-themed DLC for The Witcher 3. If you’d like to catch up with the games, the entire series is on sale now.

YouTube Channels Promoting New Cheating Tool Gets Shut Down – Report

It seems YouTube channels promoting a controversial AI-powered machine-learning cheat on consoles are being shuttered.

According to the Anti-Cheat Police Department (via VGC), publisher Activision is allegedly responsible for shutting down channels posting videos of the cheat on YouTube. ACPD said Activision may “make plans to take [the cheat] down.”

We’ve reached out to Activision for comment and will update if we hear back.

The cheat uses a capture card to bypass a console’s security, analyzing and detecting enemies whenever they enter the field. The only requirement on the player’s part to activate the cheat, is to aim to aim in the general direction of an enemy. The tool will do the rest, determining the precise location and shots required to kill a target. A promotional video illustrates how the cheat can be used.

The ACPD said the cheat is like an “aim assist but more amplified.” The group also said these types of cheats will be hard for developers to detect.

Cheating is popular in games like Fortnite but especially in Call of Duty titles like Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. Activision has banned as over 500,000 accounts from the battle royale shooter for cheating, abuse, and fraud.

Rare Sealed Copy Of The Legend Of Zelda Sells For $870,000 At Auction

An ultra-rare copy of The Legend of Zelda for NES sold at auction for $870,000, setting a new world record for the most expensive video game ever sold. The copy of The Legend of Zelda was sold at the Heritage Auction video games event, which runs from July 9 through July 11.

The copy in question is a Wata 9.0 rated, letter grade A, sealed copy, meaning that it is unopened and is in very good condition. The reason it sold for such a high asking price is that it is believed to be one of only two sealed copies of the game that is an “NES TM,” the first production run of the game. This variant was produced for only a few months in late 1987 before a new variant was replaced in early 1988.

No Caption Provided

The previous record-holder was a copy of Super Mario Bros. which sold in April 2021 for $660,000, also at a Heritage auction.

“I had a lot of confidence in this game, and, yet, I still feel like the reality of today’s bidding exceeded my vision of how it would play out,” Heritage Auctions video games specialist Valarie McLeckie said. “Making history is never an easy thing. I’m just really proud we got to be part of this yet again.”

There are numerous other sealed games being auctioned during the event, including copies of Contra, Final Fantasy, and Pokemon Blue. Goodwill recently auctioned off a copy for the Atari game Air Raid for $10,000 after finding a copy in a donation box in Texas.

Netflix’s The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf Anime Gets First Trailer, Debuts August 23

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf anime will arrive on Netflix on August 23. The release date and trailer of the fantasy series film spin-off was confirmed during the first-ever WitcherCon virtual event.

As previously announced, the film–clocking in at 88 minutes–will explore the time before Geralt of Rivera came to be known as the badass monster hunter outcast synonymous with the series. Nightmare of the Wolf will center on Geralt’s predecessor and mentor, Vesemir, a “headstrong” witcher who is equal parts ally and friend to our familiar hero. Check out the teaser for the series, which was tweeted out along with the release date’s announcement.

While WitcherCon did finally offer a better look at the upcoming animated film, the majority of plot still hasn’t been revealed other than the cryptic fact that it will involve “a powerful new threat facing the Continent.” Vesemir is being described as instrumental in shaping and paving the way for Geralt and Ciri–we’ll just have to hang in for a few more weeks to understand how.

WitcherCon also featured a similar deeper look at another prequel spin-off, The Witcher: Blood Origin–which will be a six-episode limited series set 1,200 years before the main show. The flagship series also announced that Season 2 will arrive on Netflix on December 17.

Xbox Donates $10,000 to Charity In Memory of Fallout 4’s Dogmeat

Following last month’s death of River, the dog who inspired Fallout 4’s Dogmeat companion, Xbox and Bethesda Studios have announced the companies are donating $10,000 to the Montgomery County Humane Society.

Fallout 4 senior designer Joel Burgess (River’s owner) announced River’s passing on June 26, sharing details about how the dog heavily influenced the behavior and depiction of Dogmeat, a potential companion players meet early on in Fallout 4’s story. Burgess’ announcement sparked an outpouring of condolences and well-wishes from fans and fellow developers.

As you might have guessed, the Montgomery County Humane Society serves the county Bethesda’s Rockville, Maryland office is located in. MCHS thanked Bethesda and Xbox on Twitter for their donation, saying it was proud to be a part of River’s legacy.

“On behalf of River and her family, thank you!” said Michelle Burgess, Joel Burgess’ wife and fellow owner of River. “She was so precious in our hearts and we had no idea the magnitude of what she meant to the rest of the world.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/27/river-the-real-life-dog-that-inspired-fallout-4s-dogmeat-has-passed-away-ign-news”]

“River meant so many things to so many different people who played Fallout,” Xbox responded. “Thank you for bringing such a wonderful companion into all of our lives.”

Microsoft officially acquired Bethesda in March 2021 for $7.5 billion, cementing a relationship that’s expected to make most future Bethesda games exclusive to Xbox and PC. Currently, only Arkane’s Deathloop is still confirmed to arrive on PlayStation 5.

If you want to donate to the Montgomery County Humane Society, you can do so here. If you missed Burgess’ Twitter thread reflecting on River’s life and impact on Fallout 4, it’s absolutely worth a read.
