The North Water: Exclusive Trailer Reveal and Interview With Writer/Director Andrew Haigh

Before we see Colin Farrell’s much-anticipated portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot (aka Penguin) in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the Golden Globe-winning actor will play an 1850s harpooner named Henry Drax in AMC+’s upcoming adaption of Ian McGuire’s novel, The North Water.

Premiering on the AMC+ streaming platform on July 15, this five-part miniseries follows a group of whalers who venture far past the edges of civilization in the Arctic. IGN spoke to writer/director Andrew Haigh (The OA, 45 Years) about Farrell’s Henry Drax, and the steps he took to embody the character.

Be sure to check out our exclusive reveal of the official trailer for The North Water in the video below, or at the top of the page:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/07/08/the-north-water-exclusive-official-trailer”]

“Drax character especially is a very, very hard one to cast,” Haigh told IGN. “You have to find someone that’s willing to go to some dark places and to physically transform. And Colin was completely up for that physical transformation. Put on a lot of weight, he had a lot of food, he was eating six breakfasts every morning.”

The North Water features an impressive lineup of actors, including Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Peter Mullan (Ozark), and many more.

Haigh and his team wanted the series to feel as authentic as possible, so instead of shooting everything in studio with a giant green screen, the cast and crew traveled north of the Svalbard Archipelago “to film sequences in the pack ice, the furthest point north it is believed a drama series has ever filmed before,” according to AMC.

We wanted to know what drove Haigh to film in such harsh conditions. “When I first read the book, I fell in love with the book, and it was so brutal and beautiful,” Haigh explained. “And the environment that the story is set, up in the Arctic Ocean, was so visceral in the novel, and I wanted to try and recreate that somehow. And of course, there’s always talk about doing as much as you can with digital effects and doing it on a stage somewhere. But for me, I was pretty insistent that we got to shoot this on the real location.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”slug=the-north-water-images&captions=true”]

Haigh also explained that though the story has some similarities to classic stories like Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, The North Water is its own animal entirely.

“I think there’s definitely some influences at Moby Dick in there, and there are some influences of some other great whaling dramas and ice-bound adventures,” Haigh said. “But I think it does feel different from all of them somehow. And I love that it was purely fictional. And even in the story, it’s a world that’s fading away, set in the 1850s when the whaling trade was dying out. And so, it felt like a window into a past, and it’s not that far away. And I think one of the most fascinating things to me was when I read that some of these whales can live for up to 200 years. So there’s a world in which a whale that was born in the time of this story could still be sailing around in the seas right now. For some reason, that just blows my mind, that all of these people are long dead, the world has changed so dramatically in the last 150 years, but there could still be some of those same whales around in the Arctic Ocean, which I just think is incredible.”

From See-Saw Films and Rhombus Media, The North Water will be available to stream on AMC+ on Thursday, July 15. The limited series will debut in the UK on BBC Two this fall. What did you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments.

God Of War Is Available On PC If You Have A PS Now Subscription

More PlayStation games are coming to PC, including 2018’s God of War. You won’t find Sony Santa Monica’s latest title on the Steam store, though, as it’s coming to PC via PS Now.

God of War is one of the many titles heading to PS Now this month, along with Red Dead Redemption 2, Nioh 2, and Judgment. PC users can stream all of these games using the PC app for PS Now.

While the possibility of playing God of War on PC is exciting, don’t expect the experience to be much better than what you’d get playing on console. Playing God of War on PC by using PS Now is vastly different from playing a port of the game to PC. Players won’t have access to the myriad of graphics options that come with a full PC port and will need a solid, stable internet connection to stream the game, as well as a controller. Thankfully, any wired or wireless controller should do the trick.

All that being said, PC ports of other PlayStation exclusive titles, including 2018’s God of War, could be on the way. On July 1, head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst announced that Sony had acquired Nixxes, a developer with years of experience in porting games to PC. Sony hasn’t announced what Nixxes will be working on, but as the saying goes, you get the right tool for the job.

The most recent PlayStation game to hit PCs was Days Gone, which was released on Steam with additional features like ultra-wide monitor support and an uncapped frame rate on May 18.

No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition Creators Still Plan to Work Together

While it has been some time since we’ve received an update on the collaboration between No More Heroes creator Goichi “Suda51” Suda and Deadly Premonition creator Hidetaka “Swery65” Suehiro, Suda51 has confirmed the two developers speak every few months about how to make their game, which may be called Hotel Barcelona, happen.

Suda51 recently held a Reddit AMA, and Redditor The_Rubbinator asked him if his planned team-up with Swery65 on Hotel Barcelona or another game was still in the works.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/15/no-more-heroes-3-gameplay-deep-dive-treehouse-direct-2021″]

“I contact SWERY65 at least once every 2 to 3 months, even during COVID, about how to make Hotel Barcelona happen,” Suda51 said. “It really depends on the timing, since it gets heavily influenced on the work I’m doing at that period.”

This collaboration was announced in late 2019, with these two creators confirming that they were developing a horror game together. During the reveal, Suda51 and Swery65 were brainstorming while livestreaming, with the pair coming up with ideas on the spot.

The idea they seemed to settle on back then was a game that would be about a magazine writer visiting a hip new hotel, before the horror would begin in full. Obviously, this premise may have completely changed since then.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/08/deadly-premonition-2-a-blessing-in-disguise-review”]

They also discussed using Siren as an inspiration, in which players would discover the full story through the perspective of ten characters. Hotel Barcelona was, back then, designed with an indie budget, and discussions had apparently taken place with Devolver Digital with a proposed budget of $1 million USD.

While it may be some time before we play whatever this Hotel Barcelona becomes, fans will not have to wait long to play Suda51’s No More Heroes 3, which will be released on Nintendo Switch on August 27, 2021.

The Witcher: Blood Origin Casts Giri/Haji Star Sophia Brown

The Witcher prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin has added another cast member. Netflix has announced that British star Sophia Brown has joined the upcoming fantasy show.

In The Witcher: Blood Origin, Brown will play a character named Éile. Netflix describes Éile as “an elite warrior-turned-nomadic musician who is forced to return to the way of the blade after a grand reckoning on the Continent sends her on a quest for vengeance and redemption.” Brown is best known for her role as the ruthless assassin Donna Clarke in the acclaimed British crime drama Giri/Haji, as well as for roles in Beauty and the Beast and The Capture.

Brown is the latest actor to join the cast of Blood Origin. Earlier this month it was announced that Star Trek Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh will play a character named Scían, who is “the very last of her nomadic tribe of sword-elves.” It was previously reported that Laurence O’Fuarain (Game of Thrones) will appear as a warrior named Fjall.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is a prequel to The Witcher, set 1,200 years earlier. It will tell the story of the very first monster-hunting Witcher and the events that lead to the “conjunction of the spheres,” where the worlds of monsters, men and elves merge to become one. It will be a six-episode limited series, and the showrunner is Declan de Barra (Iron Fist, The Originals). The show doesn’t have a release date yet.

The Witcher Season 2 has now finished shooting and is in post-production ahead of a release on Netflix later this year. A new promo was released during Netflix’s Geeked Week last month. In addition, the first ever WitcherCon is set to take place on July 9. The virtual event will give fans updates on both the Netflix shows and the video game series–check out the WitcherCon schedule here.

DC Movie Black Adam Enters Final Week Of Production, As The Rock Teases A “Cutting-Edge” Scene

The upcoming DC superhero movie Black Adam is coming to an end of its production schedule, and star The Rock has now celebrated the milestone with a neat behind-the-scenes look at the film.

Posting on Instagram, The Rock shared an image of himself, shirtless, having “tiny white tracking dots” applied to his body for a “very cool cutting-edge scene.”

These tracking dots, applied by makeup artist Bjoern Rehbein, are being attached to “very specific areas” of The Rock’s body so the visual effects team can create some kind of effect.

The Rock said the tracking dots can measure his “muscle fibers intensely activating and moving while Black Adam is raging to seek & destroy his enemies.”

Speaking more generally about the film, The Rock said his training, diet, and conditioning on Black Adam has been “relentless,” and the most challenging of his entire career. That’s because he’s had to maintain his look “for months,” and reach his peak physical form in the final week of shooting. “Our collective goal is to raise the bar with Black Adam,” he said. “To deliver the antihero you’ve been waiting for and you deserve.”

Black Adam releases in July 2022. It’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Run All Night, The Shallows) and also stars Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, and Aldis Hodge.

Cooler Master’s $2,000 Gaming Chair Features Haptic Feedback

Gaming chairs come in a variety of shapes and very loud colors, but one thing that has been missing from this furniture is a way to make them more immersive. PC accessories manufacturer Cooler Master and haptics specialist D-BOX plans to change that with the Motion 1, a chair that incorporates the same technology from theaters and theme parks to provide users with haptic feedback support while playing a game or watching a movie.

It’s worth noting that the chair will only work with nearly 200 PC games for now while Cooler Master works on console game integration. It won’t be cheap either as $2,000 is the starting price-point and goes up to $2,300 for the top-tier Motion 1.

“This innovation will provide movement and vibration to gamers, allowing them to have a better experience by bringing an immersive and more realistic aspect to the game,” D-BOX president Sébastien Mailhot said in a press release. “Cooler Master has developed a unique and versatile design, providing unparalleled comfort for working, playing, and for watching movies, while also benefiting from high-fidelity haptic movement.”

While the teaser trailer reveals very little of what the chair actually looks like, the few glimpses seen did reveal a swivel base, plenty of padding, and a throne-like silhouette. If you’d prefer more options or you simply can’t wait to sink into something even more luxurious for your next gaming session, check out our feature on the best PC and console gaming chairs that you can buy right now.

Danny Trejo Might Be Playing Santa Claus in American Horror Stories

The cast of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories has been revealed, and it includes Danny Trejo as Santa.

A teaser video, posted on the official American Horror Story Twitter account on Wednesday, confirmed some of the cast members appearing in FX on Hulu’s upcoming American Horror Stories series. The star-studded lineup featured a number of familiar names from the flagship show, together with a whole load of newcomers.

The names cycle on-screen pretty quickly, however, we’ve checked the list (and we’ve checked it twice) to see that Danny Trejo is set to play a character called “Santa” in the series. The name certainly conjures up images of the man in the big red suit, but fans will have to wait to find out whether Trejo is delivering a ho-ho-horror story in one of the episodes.

Trejo’s Santa is joining an A-list cast that features several American Horror Story veterans, returning to the franchise to play entirely new characters, such as John Carol Lynch taking on the role of Larry Bitterman, as well as Naomi Grossman playing Rabid Ruth, Billie Lourd as Liv Whitley, and Matt Bomer as Michael.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-15-best-horror-tv-shows-of-the-last-10-years&captions=true”]

Newcomers include Gavin Creel as Troy, Sierra McCormick as Scarlett, Ashley Martin Carter as Rowena, Paris Jackson as Maya, Belissa Escobedo as Shanti, Kaia Gerber as Ruby, Aaron Tveit as Adam, Rhenzy Feliz as Chad, Madison Bailey as Kelley, Kyle Red Silverstein as Quinn, Amy Grabow as Tipper Gore, Dyllón Burnside as James, Nico Greetham as Zinn, Charles Melton as Wyatt, Kevin McHale as Barry, and Virginia Gardner as Bernadette.

According to the tweet, “this isn’t even the half of it,” so presumably there will a few more cast members appearing in the show’s 10 self-contained episodes. Murphy previously explained that each story will last just a single episode, in contrast to American Horror Story’s anthology approach of a standalone story set across an entire season.

The Witcher: Blood Origin Casts a New Lead Actress

Netflix has cast Sophia Brown (Giri/Haji) as Éile in The Witcher: Blood Origin – a replacement for the starring role after Jodie Turner-Smith left production.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Netflix wrote: “Sophia Brown joins as Éile, an elite warrior-turned-nomadic musician who is forced to return to the way of the blade after a grand reckoning on the Continent sends her on a quest for vengeance and redemption”

Sophia Brown (Source: Netflix).

Previously, Jodie Turner-Smith was cast in the role, but left before filming started due to a scheduling conflict. Brown joins Laurence O’Fuarin (Vikings) and Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery), who will play Fjall and Scían respectively.

Blood Origin is a prequel series to Netflix’s mainline Witcher show, set in an elven world 1200 years before the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. It will tell a brand new story “lost to time” — including “the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.” It will be a story told over six episodes, and doesn’t yet have a release date.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”slug=the-witcher-explaining-all-the-characters-and-who-plays-them&captions=true”]

Blood Origin is being developed by the original series’ showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and Declan de Barra who wrote The Witcher Season 1 episode ‘Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials.’ If you want to know more, we’ve explained how the show fits into The Witcher timeline.

It’s possible we’ll learn more about the show during tomorrow’s WitcherCon, which includes Henry Cavill, developers of the Witcher games, and more. That means we should also learn more about The Witcher Season 2, which wrapped filming in April.

Dark Souls 3 Now Runs At 60FPS on Xbox Series X/S

Thanks to Microsoft’s FPS Boost, Dark Souls 3 on Xbox Series X/S will now run at 60 FPS.

Revealed on Twitter by Xbox, this free update is now available to all Xbox Series X/S owners. To get the most out of this FPS Boost upgrade, Microsoft recommends rebooting your console after the update is complete.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/04/04/dark-souls-3-review”]

As noted by Eurogamer, this upgrade brings Dark Souls 3 closer to the performance levels seen on PS5. Via backwards compatibility, Dark Souls 3 locks the game at 1080p/60 FPS on Sony’s latest console. While the Xbox Series X/S version still only supports resolution up to 900p, the 60 FPS jump will provide a much smoother experience than it had before.

This FPS Boost, in combination with the Xbox Series X/S’ SSD hard drives that cut down on load times, makes Dark Souls 3 worth another look for those that may have been holding off due to the disparity in performance on the consoles. It’s also great for those looking to replay all the FromSoftware games before Elden Ring is released in early 2022.

Dark Souls 3 is just one of the 95 games that support FPS Boost on Xbox Series X/S, a list that now includes Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Yakuza 6, Alien: Isolation, Metro: Last Light, and much more.
