EA Series Revival From Motive Reportedly a Dead Space Remake

It’s been rumored that EA will soon reveal a fan-favorite series revival at this month’s EA Play Live event and that revival is reportedly a remake of Dead Space.

GamesBeat reports that not only will this revival be a Dead Space remake, but it will be a remake in the vein of Capcom’s recent Resident Evil remakes.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/21/ea-to-reportedly-reveal-a-fan-favorite-series-revival-ign-news”]

GamesBeat’s Jeff Grub first teased back in March that EA Motive was working on an “established IP”, which has since been corroborated by Eurogamer. Following that in a later stream, Grubb said this EA Motive-developed game would be revealed at the July 22 EA Play Live showcase. The speculation of what this game could be ramped up soon after and most landed on Dead Space.

This was, in part, due to Grubb saying “We’re going to see it…if we’re not dead first.” Now, today, Grubb has reported that EA Motive’s game is, in fact, Dead Space and it is specifically a Dead Space remake.

The report says that EA Motive is taking notes from Capcom’s recent Resident Evil remakes and that like their widely-acclaimed Resident Evil 2 Remake from 2019, fans can expect the next Dead Space — seemingly the remake — to use the original Dead Space as a “strong foundation.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2013/02/01/dead-space-in-5-minutes”]

The game should have modern visuals and is expected to feature new gameplay mechanics pulled in from subsequent entries beyond the first in the Dead Space franchise.

If EA Motive actually is working on a Dead Space remake, all signs point to a reveal during the July 22 EA Play Live digital showcase.

The studio’s last release was Star Wars Squadrons, which also happened to be its first major game developed in-house. Following that release, the studio confirmed that its next project will be “something pretty special” and not related to Star Wars.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/01/star-wars-squadrons-single-player-review”]

However, EA Motive has several projects in the works so the “something pretty special” description could be about something other than this rumored Dead Space remake…although a Dead Space remake could be pretty special, right?

While waiting to learn what EA Motive’s rumored revival is, check out our thoughts on the original game in IGN’s Dead Space review and then read what we had to say about its sequels, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3. Check out this story about how Dead Space 4 was planned to have a female protagonist and open-world design after that.

EA Responds to New NCAA Football Payment Rule Changes

Electronic Arts has responded to Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling that the NCAA can’t limit the benefits of college athletes Axios reports. This decision has spurred the NCAA to state that athletes can now profit off of their name, image, and likeness; and the ruling will potentially impact the development of the upcoming “EA Sports College Football” game.

“We are watching the recent developments regarding student-athlete name, image and likeness very closely,” a company rep tells Axios. “It’s still very early stages at this point, and we plan to explore the possibility of including players in ‘EA Sports College Football.'”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/08/13/ea-sports-boss-ncaa-lawsuit-ripped-heart-and-soul-out-of-studio-but-had-silver-lining-ign-unfiltered”]

The new NCAA ruling could result in EA being able to use the likeness of college athletes for the first time since it stopped production on its NCAA football and basketball games in 2013. EA announced it would be returning to college sports games back in February, with exclusive rights to “more than 100 institutions featuring logos, stadiums, uniforms, and gameday traditions,” but not athlete likeness.

At the time, EA said it was monitoring developments on athlete’s rights, but didn’t offer any further details.

EA played a major role in the initial 2009 lawsuit over NCAA athletes’ rights to profit from the use of their likeness. EA eventually settled in court, paying $40 million towards “expected litigation settlement and license expenses related to our college football business.” EA originally planned on continuing development on NCAA games (sans likeness), but the NCAA made the decision not to renew their license agreement in 2013. With licensing agreements dropping, including the SEC, EA eventually decided to cancel production on further collegiate sports games.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/22/rumor-dead-space-is-being-revived-by-ea-ign-daily-fix”]

Details (including release date) have yet to be announced for EA Sports College Football, or any other college sports games EA may have plans for. Collegiate Licensing Company documents obtained by GameSpot indicate the next college football game may not arrive until 2023.

Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Has Seemingly Started a New Studio

Rockstar Games co-founder and Grand Theft Auto writer, Dan Houser, has seemingly started up a new video game company studio.

As spotted by Rockstar Mag a new company started in the United Kingdom called Absurd Ventures In Games has recently been registered. According to a business listing, Dan Houser is involved with Absurd Ventures in Games as Director.

Details about the new company are sparse. Absurd Ventures in Games was incorporated in the UK on June 23, 2021, and is classified as a “Ready-made Interactive leisure and entertainment software development” company.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”slug=red-dead-redemption-2-pc-screenshots&captions=true”]

However, given how few details there are it’s not necessarily the case that Absurd Ventures in Games is a new game development studio or a different company working in the games industry.

In 2020 Dan Houser left Rockstar Games, the company he helped found in 1998 with his brother Sam. Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive confirmed Dan Houser left in 2020 and issued a statement thanking Houser for his years of service. Sam Houser remains at Rockstar Games as president of the company.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/31/red-dead-redemption-2-pc-4k-launch-trailer”]

Houser is best known for his work on Rockstar’s many critically acclaimed games and served as a writer on almost all of the company’s Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption titles. The last Rockstar Games release was Red Dead Redemption 2, one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2018.

Meanwhile, the internet continues to be obsessed over when Grand Theft Auto 6 will come out.

Pokémon Go Fest 2021 to Get In-Person Celebrations in Over 20 Cities This Month

Pokémon Go has announced it will hold in-person celebrations in over 20 cities as a part of Pokémon Go Fest this year, but with limited capacity and no impact on the in-game experience due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns and restrictions.

Niantic announced today that the following cities would have in-person events on Saturday, July 17, 2021 from 10am to 6pm local time:

Europe

  • Linz, AT
  • Dresden, DE
  • Essen, DE
  • Hamburg, DE
  • Sevilla, ES
  • Paris, FR
  • Warsaw, PL
  • Bristol, UK
  • Edinburgh, UK
  • Liverpool, UK
  • London, UK

United States

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Denver, CO
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • New York City, NY
  • Nashville, TN
  • Austin, TX
  • Seattle, WA
  • Washington, D.C.

Asia-Pacific

  • Auckland, NZ

Niantic has said that these events will be outdoors and socially distanced, and will be open on a first-come-first-serve basis to those who register here, with limited capacity at each event. Niantic has noted that Pokémon Go Fest 2021 in-game tickets will not grant admission to these events, and asks that those without in-game tickets not register in order to keep crowd sizes reasonable.

The company has additionally informed IGN that the celebrations will be “fairly light-touch” and may include, for example, photo opportuntiies throughout the city. There will be no additional in-game rewards for attending, and the Pokémon Go Fest experience will be the same for everyone with an in-game ticket. Niantic also confirmed it would be adhering to local health authority guidelines and recommendations, including mask mandates where applicable.

Pokemon Go Fest takes place from July 17-18 and is a fully digital event, playable globally regardless of in-person event attendance. Pokemon Go Fest tickets cost $5 in-game and will include special research activities, a mythical Pokémon encounter, avatar items, and more events throughout the weekend. Niantic has recently announced it will begin rolling back certain pandemic-related changes following the event, a decision that has sparked criticism from the community.

Evangelion 3.01+1.01 Headed to Amazon Prime Alongside Previous Rebuild of Evangelion Films

Following a strong run in Japanese theatres, Evangelion 3.01+1.01 is headed to Amazon Prime Video alongside the rest of the Rebuild tetralogy.

Originally released earlier this year in Japan, Evangelion 3.01+1.0 was a release nearly 10 years in the making, following on from the 2012 release of Evangelion 3.0. When it finally arrived in March, it managed to become director Hideaki Anno’s highest-grossing film.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/07/01/evangelion-30101-thrice-upon-a-time-official-trailer”]

Evamgelion 3.01+1.01 concludes the film series, which has divided the Evangelion fandom since its inception way back in 2007. Suffice it to say, the Rebuild of Evangelion has proven to be every bit as confounding as the TV series, though for different reasons. Nevertheless, we called Evangelion 3.01+1.0 a “wonderful sendoff” for the series in our review.

Here in North America, the release will cap off the often fraught attempts to get the movies localized for western release. Funimation’s run through the 2010s was marked by multiple delays, especially for Evangelion 3.33. Evangelion 3.01+1.01’s release on Amazon Prime is just about the shortest turnaround for a North American release that the series has seen to this point.

The only drawback for Evangelion fans is that they will have to jump to a separate streaming platform from the TV series, which is currently available on Netflix. Anno, for his part, says it’s a finale best enjoyed on a “big TV screen.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”slug=top-25-best-anime-series-of-all-time&captions=true”]

“I’d like to thank every Eva fan in the world for your continued support,” Anno said in a release. “We were looking for the best way to offer the movie to fans overseas as early as possible in a challenging situation with movie theatres during COVID-19, and are happy to have found Prime Video as a partner to stream it globally. We highly recommend watching it on a big TV screen for the best viewing experience.”

Evangelion 3.01+1.01 launches on Amazon Prime Video alongside the previous three films on August 13.

EA Announces 4 Events Ahead of EA Play Live Showcase

EA has announced the EA Play Live Spotlight Series, bringing four broadcasts about the publisher’s games ahead of its EA Play Live showcase on July 22.

EA says that each Spotlight will be treated like a themed panel, with multiple EA games making appearances, from Battlefield 2042 to Lost in Random. “These talented developers will give you insights into what they’re making and how they’re doing it,” reads a press release, “and they may even drop some new news while they’re at it.”

The panels are titled ‘The Future of First-Person Shooters’, ‘EA <3s Independent Studios ', 'Madden NFL 22 All-Access: Scouting’, and ‘More EA SPORTS!’ – the fifth and final event following those will of course be the news-focused EA Play Live on July 22 (where we’ll hopefully hear more about that series revival that was rumoured). You can check out the official descriptions of each event below.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/06/21/ea-to-reportedly-reveal-a-fan-favorite-series-revival-ign-news”]

July 8, 10:00am Pacific – The Future of First-Person Shooters

“The Series kicks off with an extensive discussion of two of our most exciting shooters: Apex Legends and the just-revealed Battlefield 2042 (special thanks to our Battlefield community for showing up to watch us during E3, we have more coming in July).

“For the Spotlight, DICE’s General Manager Oskar Gabrielson and DICE LA’s General Manager Christian Grass, and Respawn’s Founder and Group GM Vince Zampella and Chad Grenier, Apex Game Director, will join host Stella Chung of IGN to discuss the Battlefield 2042 reveal, what to expect to see from both games on July 22nd as well as the future of FPS games as a whole. “

July 13, 10:00am Pacific – EA <3s Independent Studios

“We love seeing innovation in the industry and we love partnering with studios who have that same passion. So we’re devoting an entire Spotlight to the vital role indies play in the industry. Todd Martens of the Los Angeles Times will host a panel featuring Josef Fares of Hazelight (It Takes Two), Olov Redmalm of Zoink (Lost in Random), Mel Philips and Abubarker Salim of newcomers Silver Rain, and Guha Bala of Velan (Knockout City™). This is guaranteed to be a spirited and wide-ranging discussion!”

July 19, 4:00pm Pacific – Madden NFL 22 All-Access: Scouting – How the Community is Shaping Madden NFL 22

“Fans always influence their favorite games. This year, EA SPORTS Madden NFL 22 is taking that idea to a new level by putting the voice of the player at the heart of the development process earlier than ever via the Madden Design Council. Find out how fans impacted the development of Franchise Mode and helped bring to life highly requested features like Staff Management, weekly game strategy and a new scenario engine.

“Plus, did we mention you’ll get the first ever deep dive reveal of the brand new scouting feature coming to Madden NFL 22 via a live service update targeted in September? Join EA SPORTS’ Seann Graddy, Tom Lischke, and Andre Weingarten, as they come together to discuss the vision for their ultimate sandbox mode, Franchise. Not to mention, the panel will be hosted by Nick Mizesko, longtime play-by-play announcer for the Madden Championship Series.”

July 20, 10:00am Pacific – More EA SPORTS!

“Look, we’re not allowed to tell you much about this one yet, sorry. But we can say this Spotlight will highlight an extremely cool new addition to an extremely popular and long-running EA SPORTS franchise. We may have said too much already. Just keep your calendar free, OK?”

July 22, 10:00am Pacific – EA Play Live

“With all these Spotlights, you may be wondering what will be left for the main event. The answer: a lot. Diving deep in the Spotlight series allows for the EA Play Live main show to make games the unwavering focus, with new gameplay reveals, a few giveaways and other surprises. Lifelong gamer and WWE superstar Austin Creed will host the event and keep things moving right along.

“Now, obviously we can’t tell you everything that will be there on July 22nd. But we can tell you that this year EA Play Live will start at 10:00am PT / 7:00pm CET with a short pre-show that serves as a recap of sorts, before the main show brings the real excitement, focusing on games that are coming out soon rather than in the all-to-distant future. The show is a fast-paced one, coming in around 40 minutes and will feature what’s next for games like Battlefield 2042 and Apex Legends. You’ll also see the first gameplay for Lost in Random, featuring explosive dice battles, time-freezing tactics and card collection. We’ll have a couple other games to highlight as well, but for those, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
