WWE Releases Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Samoa Joe, And Other Wrestlers After Wrestlemania

In an announcement by WWE, they came to terms with the release of several stars including Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Kalisto, Mickie James, and former United States Champion Kalisto. The other stars released–so far–are Chelsea Green, Tucker, Bo Dallas, and Wesley Blake.

In typical WWE fashion, they wished them the best in their future endeavors. The company is also updating its own site as more releases break. While these releases may upset fans, many WWE superstars let go in 2020 found brighter futures at other companies.

Last year, after Wrestlemania, the company had what fans called Black Wednesday–which was also April 15–when over 20 superstars were released or furloughed. Some, like Drake Maverick, were rehired and some found new companies quickly to work for. With how the COVID-19 vaccine is being implemented, it could be better for some performers all-around.

It does come as a shock for performers like Samoa Joe or Billie Kay. Joe had been injured and moved to the commentary team. Billie had just been given a new gimmick and seemed to be over pretty well, even giving her a match at Wrestlemania.

With Joe, after the reshuffling of commentary teams, it looked like he was on the upswing and return to in-ring performing. Even WWE made sure to comment that Joe was still an “active member of the WWE roster,” prior to the announcement of his release.

Wesley Blake is an interesting choice as he’s been repackaged more than a few times, starting out as a tag team with Buddy Murphy, then part of the Forgotten Sons, and then one of Corbin’s Knights.

This is far from the only releases that WWE has granted this year. Back in late March, WWE released former NXT and United States Champion Andrade after being off television since October. With wrestling, you’re never sure who will make it out on top, but these are some talents that could still have a bright future ahead.

F1 2021 Announced, Features New Story Mode

Codemasters and EA have announced F1 2021, along with a release date of July 16.

F1 2021 will feature the teams, drivers, and circuits of the official 2021 FIA Formula One World Championship, as well as a new story mode, expanded Career mode with support for two players, and three extra circuits to come in free post-launch DLC.

The new story mode is called Braking Point (get it?) and takes players on an “epic journey” as they rise through the ranks from Formula 2 to Formula 1. As well as the races, the mode offers a look at the “glamourous world of F1″, including the rivalries both on and off the track.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/15/f1-2021-announce-trailer”]

Career Mode returns with a two-player option that allows friends to join together online either cooperatively or competitively, working on the same or rival racing teams as part of synchronous race sessions. Each player has complete control over their own driving assists, allowing for novice and experienced players to work together. The mode also sees the return of Real-Season Start, allowing players to begin at any point during the F1 season with real-time driver and constructor standings.

Other returning features include driver-manager mode My Team, two-player split-screen, shorter season options, esports integration, and accessible menus and handling. These elements are available on all platforms – PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. On the newer consoles, better visuals and loading times will be available. A free upgrade/Smart Delivery option is available for those who upgrade their consoles, too.

Pre-orders are available now, with a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition. The Deluxe Edition pre-orders will net you three days of early access to the game, and seven soon-to-be-revealed F1 drivers to be used in My Team, 18,000 PitCoins, and a content pack for the story mode. Orders for the Standard Edition come with 5,000 PitCoins and some “exclusive items”.

If you’ve perhaps been watching Netflix’s Drive to Survive and fancy getting into the world of Formula 1 games, take a look at our review of F1 2020, the exceptional predecessor to this newly announced game from Codemasters.

Outriders Patch Addresses Inventory Wipes, But Doesn’t Restore Lost Items Yet

The latest patch for Outriders is available now and, among other things, it addresses an issue that could cause player inventories to become wiped. This patch does not, however, restore any inventory content you might have lost.

Square Enix said in a blog post that it feels confident that new Outriders patch should stop inventory wipes from happening in the future. To test things out, Square Enix will monitor the situation this weekend to make sure that’s the case, and then it will begin the process of restoring inventory content that players might have lost.

“As soon as we are satisfied by the patch’s effectiveness, we will share extra details including timelines of our upcoming inventory restoration process,” the company said. More details will be shared on the restoration process at a later date.

Square Enix said restoring lost inventory items continues to be the company’s “highest priority.” When the restoration process is solidified, it won’t require a patch, as it’s a server-side fix.

There are some known issues related to the April 15 Outriders patch, including multiplayer connectivity issues and inventory items vanishing momentarily. Square Enix said this is to be expected and stressed that inventory items aren’t really gone for good. Restarting your game or waiting a few minutes and then restarting your game should bring the items back.

Square Enix said you’re unlikely to experience the issue in the first place, as it’s described as an “edge case.” Still, the studio it plans to address this in a future update.

The issues for Outriders at launch have proven to be a headache for those experiencing them, but the underlying game is generally being celebrated. In GameSpot’s Outriders review, Phil Hornshaw praised its use of cover-shooting and fantasy-style powers along with its endgame activities.

PS5 Update Reportedly Also Fixes Annoying Disc Drive Noise

The first big firmware update for the PlayStation 5 is now out, and it’s introduced a few more fixes than its extensive patch notes initially suggested. One fix seems to involve the annoying noise the PS5’s disc drive would often make, with numerous users reporting it to be much quieter after installing the April system update.

The PS5 would routinely spin up its disc drive if a disc was inserted, regardless of whether the disc in question was currently in use. Although there’s no official word on why or how frequently the PS5 would do this, some users have reported hearing the very loud spinning noise every 30 minutes or so. The latest PS5 update doesn’t seem to get rid of this entirely, but at the very least the noise seems to be greatly reduced.

“It sort of starts to spin up, but then stops itself abruptly, and then continues to spin for the same amount of time as before, but at a much, much lower spin speed, so it’s nowhere near as noticeable,” one Reddit user wrote on the PS5 subreddit.

Push Square has also reported the same, saying that while the disc still spins, the overall operation is drastically quieter than before. It’s still unclear why the PS5 needs to do this at all, especially in cases where the disc in the drive isn’t being used. But at least your immersion won’t be consistently disrupted anymore.

Other fixes in the PS5 update include the addition of external storage options for PS5 games, expanded HDR options for games that don’t support it, and more.

The Craziest Superhero Movie Knockoffs

These days, with Marvel and DC both having giant established cinematic universes, and 2021 lining up to be the biggest year yet for MCU releases, it’s hard to imagine there was ever a time when it was a rather lawless Wild West wasteland when it came to superhero properties. Not just in the United States, but overseas where surreal, low-budget movies, featuring bizarre echoes of the heroes we all know and love, gave us a murderous crime lord Spider-Man, a bikini-clad Luchadora Batman, and more.

Once upon a time, Marvel champions headlined their own on-the-cheap cinematic cash-ins — like 1990’s Captain America and the Roger Corman-produced Fantastic Four film from 1994, neither of which was released theatrically in the U.S. — but before that it seems like any character was up for grabs in countries like Turkey, India, and more, and could fit into any ferocious fever dream a particular filmmaker was passionate about producing.

From a monster-fighting, motorcycle-riding Spidey to a lustful Lothario Batman, here are some of the most notable, notorious, and nonsensical superhero knockoffs of all time. We promise, as much as you’ll feel like you’ve fallen into a fog of disbelief, everything you’re about to see is real and not deceptive deep fake chicanery.

3 Dev Adam

3-dev-adamLet’s kick things off here with the granddaddy of goofy takes on the Marvel Universe, straight from 1970s Turkey and direct from the mind of a creator who envisioned Spider-Man, a character who was not very familiar to Turkish audiences at the time, as the ruthless leader of a criminal organization that specializes in counterfeit bills and decapitation.

In 3 Dev Adam (“Three Mighty Men”), it was up to Captain America and Mexican Luchador legend El Santo to thwart Spidey’s nefarious plans. Cap has no shield and barely wears his mask while Spider-Man has the power to… resurrect and duplicate himself? It’s a symphony of sublime weirdness as director T. Fikret Uçak delivered one of the strangest super-mashups of all time.

La Mujer Murcielago

611828476_1280x720Shifting away from Marvel, but keeping the Luche Libre connection, we now look at Mexico’s ’60s Batwoman flick, La Mujer Murcielago. Another project that fully shirks copyright laws and corporate cares, this film reimagined Batman as not only a masked Luchador, but also as a Luchadora.

Director René Cardona sought to capitalize on the success of the ’60s Adam West Batman TV series while also connecting to the female wrestling action flicks of the era. In the story, Special Agent Batwoman is called in to infiltrate a wrestling promotion after several grapplers have gone missing. Spoiler: An evil scientist is kidnapping them in an attempt to create a Fish Man. Even bigger spoiler: Batwoman fights said Fish Man.

All that said, this Batwoman has a lot more in common with Batman than most of the other super-knockoffs here. She’s got a rich alter ego, her car looks like the ’60s Batmobile, and she even utilizes a bunch of silly tech. Aside from the bikini getup, she’s not a complete funhouse mirror take on the Caped Crusader.

Japanese Spider-Man

Screenshot_2015-01-12_12.28.20.0.0.pngSwitching over to the small screen, Japan’s Spider-Man TV series from the late ’70s may have taken, er, several liberties with ol’ Web-Head’s origins, seeing as how he’s a motorcycle racer who gets a blood transfusion from the dying alien survivor of Planet Spider, but the creators, despite the extreme reimagining, were still huge fans of Spidey from the comics. This is clearly true of the spider-like poses the character was famous for, which the show tried its best to emulate immaculately.

In fact, in the years to come the short-lived series would gain cult classic notoriety for the way Spider-Man would bombastically introduce himself in scenes using these over-the-top poses.

Other elements from the comics remained intact, like Spidey’s super-strength, his ability to stick to walls, his Spider-Sense, and the show’s own version of webbing (a net that could be shot out of his bracelet). Oh, and a spaceship. You know, to help with the battling back of cosmic hordes — specifically, Professor Monster and the Iron Cross Army — that wanted to take over the world. Never mind that this show, also known as Supaidāman, was actually the result of a licensing deal between producer Toei Company and Marvel.

Dariya Dil

eqdIt’s time for a Marvel/DC crossover with ’80s Bollywood wonder Dariya Dil (“Generous Heart”), in which Superman and Spider-Woman (or really, just a woman in a Spider-Man costume) are a loving (dancing, singing) couple who battle thugs while performing the song “Tu Mera Superman.”

Okay, so this movie isn’t actually about an Indian Superman and Spider-Woman and their love triumphing over evil-doers. It’s a family drama that contains one particular famous sequence, and song, where two characters dress up like these heroes. The scene is still worth a quick YouTube watch, though.

Alyas Batman en Robin

alyas-batman-en-robinTrying to hitch a ride on the the cape-tails of Batman ’89 was the campy Filipino partial-Justice League musical Alyas Batman en Robin, which sat on a shelf for a few years because Warner Bros. actually threatened legal action against this wholly unauthorized use of DC superheroes.

Despite coming after Tim Burton’s grim, gothic Batman film, Alyas Batman en Robin chooses to borrow from (and even parody?) the tone and style of the ’60s Adam West series, using famous Filipino comedians of the era to play Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Joker, and Penguin – or, to clarify, a bunch of idiots who specifically dress up like these heroes to either commit crimes or stop crimes. So in the movie they’re not even supposed to be these characters for real. It’s a baffling bamboozle of the highest order.

Yarasa Adam

sdfasYup, we’re back in Turkey for a ’70s Batman pulp thriller, modeled after both the Adam West Batman series and American serials of the 1930s and 40s, where the Caped Crusader and his trusted ward hit the streets to solve the brutal murder of the city’s top fashion models.

In Yarasa Adam, Batman and Robin were actually members of the metropolitan police, not vigilantes. The film’s a crude mix of superheroes, exploitation, the Mission: Impossible TV series, and James Bond — in terms of both the arch-villain and also this Batman’s wanton womanizing ways — and it’s one of the most naked-y takes on Bats in movie history.

Supermen Donuyor

Supermen-DonuyorTurkey’s Supermen Donuyor (Superman Returns), from 1979, actually tells the story of the almighty alien orphan quite faithfully. He’s saved from his dying planet, adopted by Earth parents, holds a job as a reporter, and fights crime as Superman.

All this is to say that while Supermen Donuyor is, in appearance, a Superman flick, the story told here is actually a remake, sometimes shot-for-shot, of 1941’s Adventures of Captain Marvel – yes, a completely different DC character. So this is actually a mash-up of both heroes, complete with a crude, possibly non-existent, budget.

Bonus Pick: Italian Spiderman

imagesWe’ll wrap things up here with a doozy, though admittedly Italian Spiderman is a cheat because it came out in 2007 and it’s a well-made parody of the types of movies we’ve been listing here.

As a spoof of knockoff supers, Italian Spiderman presents us with a “lost” ’60s superhero film where Spider-Man is a sleazy, overweight fool with a thick mustache and a red shirt. In keeping with yesteryear cinema’s love of tweaking comic book heroes’ abilities, this movie’s marvelously gross champion has powers that include mind control, teleportation, the ability to grow into a giant, and… um… penguin summoning. That’s right, eat your heart out, 1992’s Penguin from Batman Returns.

This disturbed dose of dopiness is also responsible for this much-giffed reaction scene.

F1 2021 Launches This July With Expanded Single-Player Mode

Codemasters and EA have announced F1 2021, the latest in the long-running franchise of gaming simulators adapting the format and vehicles from the globe-trotting sport. F1 2021 is launching on July 16, with three days early access for those who preorder.

F1 2021 will be doubling-down on a narrative-focused single-player mode, something which the series has lightly dabbled with in previous entries. Called Braking Point, the mode will see you rise through the ranks as a new Formula 2 racer to eventually take a seat at one of the ten teams in Formula 1. Codemasters says that Braking Point will give you more to do off the track as well as on it, as it seeks to replicate the many pressures Formula 1 racers juggle during race weekends.

Another new addition is two-player support in F1 2021’s returning Career Mode, letting you and a friend fight it out or work together across synchronous races with any one of the ten supported F1 teams. Each player will be able to tune driver assists according to their desired level, while a consistently updated roster will let you dive into career mode with up-to-date driver and constructor standings from the current F1 season.

F1 2021 will also include three new tracks: Portimão in Portugal, Imola in Italy, and the debut of the new Jeddah street track in Saudia Arabia. Returning features include two-player split-screen support, options for shorter seasons across both F2 and F1 calendars, My Team mode, esports integration, and more. F1 2021 will also be the first game in the series to natively support PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but will also launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Newer consoles will benefit from improved visuals and faster loading times, Codemasters says.

The future of Codemasters F1 series was in question following its purchase by EA earlier this year. EA at the time stated that it intends to let Codemasters continue producing the racing titles its known for, with the recent slate of F1 titles being some of the developer’s best in recent years.

Lord Of The Rings Movies Returning To Theaters In China This Week

At least the first two The Lord of the Rings movies are coming back to theaters in China. Warner Bros. confirmed in a post on the Chinese social media app Weibo that The Fellowship of the Ring will premiere in cinemas across the country on April 16, with The Two Towers to follow a week later on April 23.

These movies will be available in their remastered 4K versions. The third and final movie in the trilogy, The Return of the King, doesn’t have a release date yet for China.

Deadline pointed out that China’s May Day holiday period in early May already has many local films lined up to screen around then, so it seems Warner Bros. is holding Return of the King until later.

Director Peter Jackson appeared in the Weibo announcement video and spoke about how the themes of The Lord of the Rings are particularly resonant today.

“It’s been really great having the chance to revisit the Lord Of The Rings trilogy… The central theme of the world in a state of turmoil and the ordinary people, the Hobbits in this case, make a big difference,” he said. “It’s not a story of heroes or superheroes, it’s a story of ordinary people who set out to save their world and through a long series of hardships they ultimately achieve that.”

China is a massive market for movies, so Warner Bros. could make a lot of money from the re-releases of The Lord of the Rings. In March, Avatar returned to theatres in the country and made enough money to overtake Avengers: Endgame to reclaim its title of the highest-grossing movie of all time globally.

The Lord of the Rings also recently returned to theaters in America and on 4K IMAX for the first time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fellowship. As for the wider franchise, Amazon is making a big-budget Lord of the Rings TV show, while there are multiple new games in the works, including one centered around Gollum.

Adidas Is Releasing Official South Park Towelie Sneakers for 4/20

Adidas and South Park have partnered together to launch an exclusive Towelie-themed sneaker, just in time for 4/20.

That’s right, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, South Park’s Towelie has been reincarnated into a pair of famed Adidas Campus shoes. They have been constructed with Towelie’s signature terry cloth in purple and splashed with the classic Adidas stripes in white leather. They also feature two big Towelie eyes on the tongue, which turn bloodshot red when stepping out in the sun.

Outside of their novelty look, the sneakers come with a couple of extra features. The most character-appropriate being a small hook-and-loop pocket that’s fitted inside the tongue and acts as a hidden compartment for the wearer to store whatever they want — for now though, it’s housing a Towelie keychain. Above that, a couple of Towelie’s trademark catchphrases appear in print.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=adidas-x-south-park-towelie-sneaker-collaboration&captions=true”]

Adidas is planning to release the South Park Towelie sneakers on April 20 to celebrate 4/20. They’ll go on sale in the US and EU on the Adidas CONFIRMED app and at select specialty retail partners next week. For Towelie enthusiasts, a raffle to purchase the limited-edition Towelie shoe is now open on the Adidas app. Raffle winners will be drawn and notified to complete their purchase on 4/20.

Towelie, a talking towel who was genetically engineered by Tynacorp, made his first appearance in the eighth episode of South Park’s fifth season. After which, he became a recurring character, frequently appearing whenever the subject of water was mentioned to advise characters to keep a towel handy, giving him the opportunity to deliver one of his signature lines: “Don’t forget to bring a towel.”

South Park’s 23rd season earned a spot on IGN’s list of Best Animated Series of 2019 after wrapping in December of that year. We praised the animated sitcom for demonstrating that it still has “plenty of gas left in the tank,” with the series proving to be “as insightful and topical as ever,” having spawned “one of the most purely hilarious episodes ever in Turd Burglars.”
